memories of yesterday (part 2)

yi yang held her breath. the glistening shell crawled closer until it was nearly at her feet. she could hardly function as a human anymore, doing the best she could to inch around the spawn of hell and get away safely. unfortunately, it noticed and she let out a loud shriek, bumping into the side of the door before almost falling out of the small space.

she had just decided that one tube of white paint wasn't going to be enough and it didn't occur to her until she was partially done. her mixed paints were drying along with her art so she had to get back fast but no, there just had to be a cockroach in the damn storage area and that nearly cost her life.

"who's screaming in the storage space?"

a mop of grease blonde hair poked into the closet. she sighed in relief.

"junhui, please kill it before its children take over the world."

he grinned seeing her face and just simply stepped on it. she whined in disgust before grabbing her paint and leaving. yi yang made it back to her seat before the teacher even noticed her disappearance but this didn't faze her to the very least.

"hey, eunsol. you know that junhui just stepped a goddamn cockroach. and I'm just appalled at how he's not squirming. do you think he belongs in a cult?"

eunsol looked up in surprise, her paintbrush hovering over the canvas.

"what makes you think that?"

yi yang swallowed.

"he didn't even flinch."

"seolhyeon! where did you go?"

a rather short male hurried down the empty hallway, occasionally brushing out his jet black hair out of his eyes. he spent ages styling it this morning, experimenting around, creating a 'bad boy' look before his mother yelled at him for wasting his time shitting around in the bathroom instead of having his breakfast.

"jihoon, you can't grow up all pretty if you spend your life gelling your hair. just eat more food and settle for growing up tall and handsome!"

tall.

he could barely see over the shoulders of many students in the hallways every time they had to go to their next class and don't even try to fight him about school photos. no one really pays attention to the front row. they just compare heights of the back row and argue over who's taller with or without shoes. trust him.

"jihoon? you called for me?"

in an instant, he found himself blinking in front of the slightly shorter girl who would still tease him for his height and scream like a little kid every time he gave into her begging for piggyback rides.

"yeah i did. you got your prints done?"

she nodded and showed him the few sheets of paper she was holding.

"let's go have lunch now."

he followed her out of the building out into the courtyard where there were few students compared to the many who were queuing in the lunch line for disappointment. the courtyard was still full of leaves rotting over the summer and even the wooden benches were starting to rot. it was pretty humid as he and seolhyeon walked side by side in a comfortable silence, eventually finding their own group of friends in the cafeteria.

seolhyeon walked up to her friends who had saved her a spot and wrinkled at the food on the trays they were had given up eating.

"you guys never seem to learn to eat out."

she shook her head in disappointment.

"guess we'll stay with the shit food today."

-----

two eyes watched the ticking clock like hawks. everyone was bored; the girl who was usually intensely defending her perfect marks title, the guy across the room who usually slept looked tired of sleeping, the teacher frankly didn't care if her students were learning or not, youngbyul just wanted to melt into the floor and demand that the school stop teaching this subject.

english.

just the thought of all the tests that would be coming soon made her stressed enough to want to run forever on the treadmill.

too much sitting, too much sitting.

what seemed like eternal years later (really youngbyul, it was just 8 seconds), the bell finally rang and she ran out the door. now that she thought about it, it wouldn't be so bad to turn into stone and proclaim the harmful effects of studying english. she could almost imagine the caption: 'english turns people into stone!'

yeah right. she made a turn to the left and nearly collided with someone. she quickly apologised and headed straight to the cafe around the block.

"hey diner girl," her co-worker greeted her teasingly.

she scowled at the nickname and changed just in time for her shift. so much for sticking to the same job for 5 years. she went to her station and picked up a few orders that were gradually starting to pile up with the amount of customers that flooded into the cafe to spend time at after school or to enjoy a late lunch break, and started to work on the drinks.

"2 mint hot chocolates, an iced peach tea and a caramel latte." youngbyul muttered to herself as she quickly readied the drinks.

"mina, the drinks."

she took over the cashier as mina went to deliver the drinks and cakes. the sound of the door bell jingling brought her senses back just as she started to wander in the scent of freshly made coffee and cakes being brought out of the oven. she hadn't seen this group of rowdy teenagers before.

"c'mon, ask her out like you always wanted to." one of them joked.

she rolled her eyes in the annoyance.

"piss off you aren't going to order. there's a line behind you."
