Pet Parents (A LokixCassandra One-Shot)
Summary: Loki and Cassandra decide it's time to take that next step in domestic bliss and adopt a pet. Only things don't go as smoothly as planned.
"So what are you thinking, a dog or a cat?" Cassandra asked Loki as they entered the lobby of the local animal shelter.
"Hmm. I have no preference."
Cassandra scowled at him. In other words, Loki was leaving the decision completely up to her. It was his idea for them to get a pet. They should be making the decision together.
One of the kennel attendants showed them to the small courtyard where the dogs were playing. Loki held open the gate for her and shut it behind them. A Jack Russell tore across the yard barking excitedly. The small dog ran around the god in circles, ears flying behind him.
Loki sniffed as the dog dropped a tennis ball at his feet, panting. "Too hyper. It reminds me of Thor."
Rolling her eyes, Cassandra squatted down and offered her hand. The dog's tail spun like a fan blade wiggling his bottom happily. "Aw, he's so cute." She glanced at the attendant. "What's his name?"
"Peter."
Cassandra scratched Peter behind one velvety soft ear. "How long has he been here?"
"A month."
Peter looked up at her with innocent sparkling brown eyes that melted Cassandra into a pile of goo. Love at first sight. He'd been here so long and Cassandra knew what that meant. It really was a no brainer.
"I'll take him." She scooped the dog up and glared at Loki daring him to argue. "Grab his toy."
Holding the slobbery ball between two fingers, Loki wrinkled his nose. He followed Cassandra and the kennel attendant inside to fill out the paperwork. If this is what she wanted he'd go along with it.
A black cat streaked past them, tripping Loki. The cat whipped around, hissed and swiped at the god's leg.
Now, it was Loki's turn to go starry-eyed. "He's so fierce. I like that."
The attendant perked up, sensing another adoption opportunity. "Cheep is a good cat he just needs to be neutered." She motioned for Cassandra to place Peter on the ground. "If you're serious about adopting them both we need to make sure they'll be friends."
Dog and cat, natural enemies sniffed each other cautiously. Cheep turned away in pure cat disdain, flicking his tail. He trotted over to Loki and rubbed against his foot scent-marking him.
Peter wagged his tail cheerfully.
"Okay, looks like it's a go." Cassandra said.

Getting ready for a pet took a lot of work as Loki found out. Cassandra took Cheep and Peter to the vet and now they were inside a pet store to buy supplies.
Furry rodents scurred around in large glass boxes. Colorful birds flitted about cages, chirping. Animal products burst from the shelves. Toys, food, treats, even clothing. Cassandra had Peter hooked up to a harness, the small dog dashed down the aisles sniffing everything.
Loki carried Cheep in the cardboard cat carrier he was given at the shelter. "Are pets allowed to roam freely in this shop?"
"Its one of the few places they can go." Cassandra dropped a pouch of treats into the cart alongside a bag of dog food and toys. "Next we'll pick up some things for Cheep."
Bottom wiggling, Peter pulled out a rawhide bone from a bottom shelf, knocking a nearby row of dog shampoo to the floor.
"Uh-oh. Guess we'll be buying that too, right buddy?" Cassandra didn't take the bone away letting the dog keep his prize. She picked up the bottles and lined them back on the yellow shelf.
The cat carrier rocked slightly as Cheep shifted around in the small, confined space. Loki lifted the carrier peering into one of the slits on the right side. "I suppose you would like to get out and explore, little kitten?" He pried open the cheaply made carrier and a black head popped out.
Cassandra gaped at him in horror. "Loki, no!"
Too late. Cheep leaped from the carrier and sped down the aisle.
Lovely. Loki thought as the feline's tail whipped around the corner.
Cassandra jabbed her finger at him. "Go get Cheep!" She held onto Peter's leash, the dog bouncing around in excitement.
Muttering to himself, Loki chased after the cat. Head down, Cheep raced through the aisles. He skidded into a display, sending the whole thing flying. Plastic bottles crashed to the floor, some of them exploding a milky substance.
Cheep skidded through the spill, sliding sideways. Loki dove to catch him and slid headfirst into a shelf of cat litter. Loki scrambled to his feet, spinning around to capture his wayward pet.
The cat studied him with laughing eyes and took off again.
That little-
Another crash and a cage fell to the ground, the occupant frantically flapping its wings. Flipping his hair out of his eyes, Loki summoned his magic. Enough of this.
A sparkly green cloud held Cheep in place. Loki stalked forward and plucked the cat out of the air and stuffed him back in the carrier, securing the lid. "Bad cat."
Cheep began purring up a storm, rubbing against the carrier.
Cheeky little devil.
Loki limped through the store until he found Cassandra. She took a look at his disheveled appearance and winced.
"Are you alright?"
"Its nothing I couldn't handle." Loki lied.
Then an angry employee of the pet store approached with a security guard. "Sir, you're going to have to pay for everything your pet damaged."
Cassandra elbowed him in the side. "Nothing you couldn't handle?"
Loki sighed in defeat. He was in the doghouse in more than one sense.
