Chapter Nine
Harry's POV
Draco and I waited for an hour for everyone to leave. We made sure to be as quiet at possible, and we may or may not have passed the time by kissing, which made the time go by a lot faster that it would have just silently standing in a shower stall with a half-naked Draco Malfoy.
Once it was finally silent, I whispered "is everyone gone?"
"I think so," Draco whispered back, shivering as he grimaced at his soaked clothes. "What are we going to do about our-" Draco immediately went silent as the door opened again, and Draco and I shared a look of utter annoyance.
Our look was quickly replaced by surprise, however, once two sets of clothes were swung over the door and hung on the frame and I could hear footsteps stepping away from our stall. Upon closer inspection, Gryffindor and Slytherin ties were included. Someone knew.
Draco and I quickly got dressed in awkward silence, the only sound being ruffled clothing and belt buckles. "You open the door," Draco whispered, nudging me.
"What? No, you do it!" I whisper yelled back.
"Why should I do it?"
"Because you offered me up first!"
"No, that's why YOU have to do it!"
I groaned but placed my hand on the door, hesitantly opening it. I finally gathered the courage to look up and saw Hermione. In the boys bathrooms?
Her arms were crossed over her chest and an expression that read, "really?" Was spread over her face. "Oh thank god," I breathed, placing a hand on my heart. "It's just Hermione."
"Just Hermione? Just Hermione? Anyone is bad Potter, anyone and everyone who knows is bad," Draco scoffed, leaning against the stall door frame as he adjusted his tie.
"You two are lucky you didn't get caught," Hermione said, cutting our bickering off. "And you're lucky I'm close with Pansy in order to get you clothes, Malfoy. Now I'm not exactly sure what's happening here, but in compensation for me saving both of your asses I demand I am informed of your... Situation."
Draco and I exchanged nervous looks. "Uh... Well, we aren't... Like... Dating? But we're... Dating..?" Draco snickered at my attempt to explain, and I spun to face him. "YOU tell her, and try to do better!"
"Well, Since Potter doesn't have the guts to break up with his girlfriend, we're kind of an off the radar, unofficial couple, to put it simply." Draco shrugged and I stuck my tongue out at him.
"Git."
"Prat."
"Ga-"
"Boys," Hermione snapped. We both fell silent. "Well, it's good to see at least one this hasn't changed." She sighed. "Bickering between you two has been amusing, it would he a shame if it had ended."
Draco and I stayed silent, not knowing how to respond or react. "I'm not covering for you again, so you two better be more careful. I don't want anyone to discover a naked Harry and Dr-"
"We were dressed!" Draco blurted out desperately, his face flushing a dark red. "I mean, for the most part, but still!"
Hermione shook her head with a sigh, walking over to a sink where she pulled out two pairs of shoes, socks and our wands. "Here. Get ready for the day."
I stuck my wand in my pocket and pulled on my socks and shoes, moving to be in front of a mirror so I could attempt to fix my hair. I was turning to Draco when I heard a violent cough and Draco appeared next to me, leaning over a sink. As he coughed, blood spattered through the sink, creating a morbid form of abtract.
I did was I always did- I hugged him from behind, wrapping my arms around his waist and rested my cheek in between his shoulder blades, gently caressing his stomach with my finger tips.
After a while, the coughing subsided, leaving Draco hovering over the sink, gaspingfor air as blood ran from his lips and down his chin, into the sink. As always, my heart shattered seeing him like this, but it was definitely less frequent than it was a few weeks ago. He still had a vine that crept around his face, but he used to have three, so I'm not complaining.
"Your hanahaki... It's Harry, isn't it?" Hermione asked curiously, handing him a wad of tissues to clean his face off with.
Draco shrugged, taking a few and dampening them in order to wipe at his face. "Thanks."
"No problem. But is it Harry? Honestly?"
Draco sighed, looking up into the mirror. He grimaced, which I decided I didn't like, but decided not to bring it up now. "Yes, it's Harry."
Hermione thought for a long while, frowning. "I always thought you two liked each other. I'm just surprised you're acting on it. I'd break up with Ginny soon, she's starting to think your guys relationship is getting serious."
Hermione turned and headed for the exit of the boys bathroom, leaving with a dramatic flare as always, while Draco spat a bit more blood in the sink. "Bloody hell that hurts," Draco hissed out, placing a hand on his chest, bracing himself on the sink by his forearm. A shudder ran through his entire body before he stood, grimacing. "Fuck."
"Is there anything I can do?" I whispered out hopelessly, wanting to help but knowing I probably couldn't.
"Kiss me?" Draco suggested with a teasing smirk, which was quickly interrupted by a frown when he flinched again.
I couldn't help but frown. If I was falling more and more in love with him every day, why was he getting worse? "C'mon, let's go," I whispered, gently kissing his lips gently for a few moments before taking his hand and gently guiding him towards the bathroom exit.
He sighed but followed, until we got to the door at least, where he released my hand before we left. I don't know why it hurt so bad to have him let go because I understood why, and all three-thousand of the reasons and explanations ran through my head, it I couldn't help the fact that it kind of hurt. Draco walked towards the (Great? Grand?) Hall in silence, walking a few feet apart. "How are you feeling?" I asked quietly after a while. Other students occasionally brushed past us, well, me- they seemed to try their best to avoid Draco- gaving the two of us weird looks or ignored us. I was just thankful they didn't ask.
"I'm okay. My lungs hurt."
"I'm sorry."
"It's not your fault."
I couldn't think of a way to respond so I just stayed quiet as we walked, side by side, a few feet apart. Even though he was right there, it felt like he was miles away from me. I opened my mouth to speak, but I was interrupted by a high pitched voice shouting my name and fast footsteps. I let out a loud noise of surprise as Ginny pretty much tackled me from the side, crushing me in a hug. "Hi Harry!"
Draco looked away, a look of pain crossing his face. "Hi Gin... Hey, can we talk for a minute?"
Draco looked over at me in utter surprise, but I kept my face blank as possible. "Oh, yeah, of course! What's wrong?"
Of course, more and more people had started filling halls, so I led her to a private area near the window. "Hey, so... I'm really sorry Gin but I'm really not feeling it anymore. I'll always love you as a-"
"What? A friend?" Ginny was obviously straining to keep a flat expression and struggling to maintain it. "A sister?"
"Look, Ginny, please. I'm sorry, I really am, but I just don't-"
"Found another girl for you, huh?" The sad expression on her face was gone, and only anger remained. "Found a prettier, better girl? Well fuck you Potter."
Ginny stormed away, but not before striking me across the face with her palm. I could feel the sting and felt marks where her nails had raked across my face even as she stalked away. Of course, everyone was staring at me. This time, I didn't even care. I just slid down the wall until I was sitting, hanging my head.
I loved Ginny, I really did, but Draco... I don't know how long I was sitting there before someone knelt before me. "Hey," Draco whispered, placing on hand on my lower thigh. "You alright?"
I remained quiet but nodded, staring at Dracos shoes. He knelt there for a while in silence while the crowd whispered in confused or shocked voices, asking what Draco was doing. "Get away from him Malfoy! He doesn't need you to mock him right after a breakup!"
Draco slowly stood and turned to faced the crowd, leaving my to stare at his heels and calfs. I didn't know what he was doing until a low growl left his throat and he started to storm forward with a insult on his lips before I jumped up, tugging him back by his arm, taking the advantage to pull him into me and hug him in as close to a brotherly way as I could manage, just to make it obvious we weren't dating, since Draco obviously wasn't ready for that yet. His muscles were all taut with anger, his hands forming fists at his sides. "It's okay," I whispered gently, slowly withdrawing after a few moments once his body had loosened a bit. I looked up and found the guy that had said that.
"He was helping me. Don't you dare talk to him like that again," I snapped, glaring at him. "Don't assume he's always bad just because he's had a few rough years."
"Potter, you don't have to stand up for me," Draco mumbled quietly, his eyes downcast. "I do deserve it, after all."
"Don't you dare say that. So you had a few bad years. I don't see why everyone has to be so cruel to you!"
"Because I was cruel to them. It's how the world works. Karma fights people back. I deserve their aggression and snide comments."
"Shut up. No you don't. Accept it, because Potter knows best."
"But-"
"I will shut you up forcefully."
"And how, exactly do you plan on that? I'm pretty intent on talking."
"I don't like it when you talk bad about yourself."
Draco really was shutting up, was he. He let out an indignant noise that I can't really describe in words. "Well I deserve their- Mffph!"
I shut him up, at least. But now I was kissing Malfoy in front of dozens of people. Fuck it. He pulled me against him, making us stumble and me pin him to a wall, but he obviously didn't care seeing as he kept kissing me.
Simple kissing quickly turned into my tongue in his mouth while he caressed my hair, his free hand on my waist while I squeezed his hips gently. Eventually, we pulled away, and immediately Dracos mouth opened.
"I'm going to get that on a t-shirt," he said thoughtfully, leaving me confused.
"What?"
"'Potter Knows Best.' I'm going to put it on a shirt."
I couldn't help but smile. "And I'll get a shirt saying "I'm Potter.'"
Draco suddenly frowned. "But what if we're both Potter?"
"Then... We'll put OG in front of it?" I shrugged with a laugh. "OG Potter knows best."
Draco laughed and leaned forward again, capturing me in a gentle kiss that made everything around us melt away before he pulled away again, leaving me in the harsh cruel world. I didn't realize I had showed my disappointment until Draco laughed. "Don't pout, Potter. I'll end up kissing you all day if you do."
"In that case-"
"No, Potter."
I laughed. "Alright, alright."
I suddenly remembered that other people existed and blushed horrid. "People," I groaned.
"People? I rather hate people too, but I don't go around groaning about it."
"I beg to differ," a voice scoffed from the crowd as Pansy shoved through seas of people. "All you do is mope around and pout about all your life problems. Now why did you not tell your best friend that you're dating Harry fucking Potter!"
Draco frowned. "Simple. We're not dating."
"Bullshit. Everyone saw that kiss, there's no denying it," Panst huffed, crossing her arms over her chest.
"He's right," I piped up. "We aren't- officially, at least, because we're both too cowardly to ask the other out."
"Did you just call me a coward?" Draco stared down at me in teasing intimidation and I smirked slightly.
"Maybe."
"I'm not a coward, Potter."
"Mhm," I hummed with a shrug, turning away from him. "Whatever you say Malfoy." I started to walk, but a hand bracing against the wall beside me stopped me from continuing my venture to the right. I narrowed my eyes at Draco. "How brave," I said sarcastically.
"Fine. If you don't believe me... Harry, will you go out with me?"
I couldn't help the surprised expression that made it's way onto my face, then the embarrassed one where my face went dark red, to the tips of my ears down to my neck. "I'd love to."
Draco smiled and leaned forward to kiss me again, but Pansy cleared her throat. "Sorry Potter, I need to speak with Malfoy for a minute." She took his forearm and dragged him away, leaving a red faced me with dozens of eyes staring at me, which I should have been used to by now.
Embarrassed, I made my way through the crowds, ignoring the questions and shocked looks sent my way as I ran for the Gryffindor common rooms. I wondered what Pansy was talking to Draco about as I collapsed into one of the chairs with a heavy sigh, closing my eyes and leaning back. This has been a long day.
