Happy Home

Sadie's POV (Sage's Little Sister)

I didn't realize what abuse was until I was about ten years old. My father had just gotten back from a stressful work conference and decided to take all of his anger out on the family. Instead of attacking my sister Sage. He always went directly for my mother.

Daniel Griffin was my father's name. When I was little, I remember my life being perfect. I know now it was because my sister Sage shielded me from the brunt of the abuse. I knew my family had money because of the luxurious lifestyle that we lived.

Both of my parents were neurosurgeons at our small-town hospital. My mother Abby always found a reason to judge people with "less money." Little did she know those people were probably a million times happier than her own family.

She was the only person my father would ever lay hands on. She was so blind to see that it was wrong. My parents were both very good at hiding things; especially what occurred in their household.

As my father arrived home that night, he grew drunker by the minute. He grew angrier with every word that came out of my mother's mouth.

Sage and I were watching the whole interaction from the spiral staircase overlooking the kitchen. All we could make out was my mother's muffled voice as she apologized over and over. Suddenly we heard something slam and a loud scream.

Sage and I sat there completely frozen in fear and utter shock. Sage without even a second thought in her mind pulled out her phone and dialed nine one one. She told the operator the details and told her to send the police to our house immediately.

She then warned me to stay exactly where I was and if our dad came up the stairs to hide immediately. She got up, put on a brave face and marched down the stairs. I heard more shouting and then the faint sound of sirens.

No one knew about the abuse besides my mom's mother. She took us in and practically raised us as best that she could.

When she passed, she gave us each a small trust fund and left us her house. The rules however she made were very strict. This was so my parents could not have anything she gave us.

When Sage turned eighteen, she was allowed to move into grandma's old house. Neither of us could have any access to our money until we reached the age of twenty-one.
