Chapter 4
Kongpob stared at Arthit with full of despair and yearning. Kongpob sighed as he looked back to his notebook and started to note down the points of the class.
It's been a month since Arthit had talked to him. Kongpob knows that he was the one trying to ignore the man but a small part of him still believe that Arthit wouldn't leave him but at last the man had lost interest in him like others.
Kongpob left empty now. The first three days of college were a new experience for him. Kongpob being an orphan made him really responsible in his life, he didn't have any other thoughts other than studies, work and sleep in his agenda but after entering college a new subject started to break his nights of sleep.
And that is Arthit, Arthit Rojnapath. The son of the director of the university. A person who is completely opposite to him. Both him and Arthit we're polar opposites yet Kongpob fell for him.
Kongpob doesn't know whether it is because of Arthit's carefree nature, or his smile that always graces on his lips which sometimes gives him the opportunity to see those dimples.
But this one month made Kongpob realise his place in Arthit's heart. He could see that the guy no longer tried to start a conversation with him or even follow him around like he did the first three days. The latter only smiled at him softly whenever their eyes met, nothing more than that.
Kongpob doesn't know whether Arthit had found out that he was mute and that was the reason why he started to stop talking to him.
In the middle of the month they had a surprise test for all the classes and for Kongpob, he doesn't know whether to call it unfortunate or fortunate, all tests he scored full marks. He was the only person who scored full for everything and that's when students really started to notice him.
At one class the professor had praised him by telling that even though he didn't have the ability to speak he is such a brilliant student and everyone should learn from him.
Kongpob was actually shocked to hear the teacher's words, it's from that teacher everyone got to know that he was mute. Fortunately, Arthit was not present that day so it gave Kongpob some relaxation.
His brother Chai had already told all teachers about his condition and asked them to not tell it in front of others since it makes him feel different so he was really surprised.
Being around thousands of students he knows that somehow Arthit will know about it. Gossip is not very rare at university at all.
But Arthit never came to him and asked about it which makes him curious too. Observing Arthit for days he knows that if the guy hears something from others he does check with the said person without going into conclusion, it was one of Arthit's traits which attracted Kongpob.
Kongpob started to believe that like others Arthit might also lose his interest in him.
The bell rang startling Kongpob from his thoughts. He had not even written a single word in his notebook. He's not a person who brings up personal matters in between studies, tear many days he didn't have a problem. But the past two days he feels complete uncomfortable. Maybe it was because he saw Arthit turn on his heels when he Kongpob walling to his direction the other day.
It makes Kongpob's heart clench. He felt suffocated.
Kongpob sat in his seat, he didn't feel like moving anyway. He wanted to be alone. Most of the time he is, he's always alone. Always.
"Kong."
Kongpob's eyes widened when he heard that familiar voice call his name. His name felt soo beautiful coming out of that mouth.
Kongpob turned to the source of the voice to only smile when he saw the latter giving him a dimpled smile.
He looked around to see anyone else were there in the class but it was only him and Arthit now.
"Don't sit here alone. You have been sitting at class alone during intervals. Come, let's go and eat something," Arthit stretched his hand forward for Kongpob to take it.
Kongpob looked at Arthit confused. He lakes his bag in a hurry before he took Arthit's hand which still didn't move. When their skin came in contact Kongpob could feel his cheeks burn which he saw Arthit smile wider as he chuckled.
Kongpob stared at their interlocked hands. He felt energized just by Arthit's small words and touches. He felt happy that Arthit had been observing him for the past days. He felt the urge to hug the latter but he restrained himself.
The two walked silently towards the cafeteria. Arthit eyes Kongpob from the corner of his eyes. He smiled silently when he saw the latter stare at their interlocked fingers with a wide smile on his face. Arthit had waited for this moment for a whole month and he'll make sure it's worth it, both for him and Kongpob.
For them.
Kongpob looked up when he noticed that the walk was getting longer. It was then he noticed that they were walking towards the garden near the cafeteria and his eyes almost popped out when I saw a group of students and teachers, especially the director of the university gathered with a huge banner with 'Happy Birthday' written on it.
Arthit stopped on his tracks when they reached a few foot away from the group of people.
"Happy Birthday Kongpob!" The group roared as they saw Kongpob.
The bag on Kongpob's shoulders slides down as he watched the scene in front of him. His eyes turned misty as they started to sing a birthday song and Chai was bringing a cake in front of him.
Kongpob chuckled with happiness. He covered his mouth with his palms as he tried to control the sobs escaping his mouth.
"Happy Birthday Kongpob," Arthit wished the latter as he took the cake from Chai and stood in front of Kongpob.
Kongpob sniffled yet a wide smile was engraved on his lips.
"Make a wish Kong," Arthit said.
Kongpob looked at everyone who was looking at him with so much care and he felt overwhelmed with the attention he was getting, not the negative one he always received but a positive one.
Kongpob looked at Arthit one last time before he closed his eyes and wished in his mind.
He wished that everyone who loved him stayed healthy and that Arthit would stay healthy and achieve the dreams he wishes for.
Kongpob opened his eyes and blew the candles as another round of applause eroded.
"Happy Birthday Kong," Chai ruffled Kongpob's hair who smiled back at him.
Kongpob then turned towards Arthit and he wanted to say thank you but he couldn't say it until he discloses a secret.
Kongpob patted on Arthit's shoulder who turned his attention to him.
Seeing that Kongpob was about to tell him something Arthit raised his hand, telling him to stop.
Kongpob's eyes widened with what he saw next. A cool shiver ran down his spine with the scene in front of him. There was complete silence in the place. Not a single person uttered a word.
There, Arthit was talking to him. Not verbally but by using sign language.
Tears rolled down Kongpob's eyes.
Arthit signed him, " I know you couldn't speak for the past one month and I'm sorry that I ignored you for a while Kong. But I had made a promise to myself when I found out that you couldn't speak that the next time I talk to you I will only do that when I study how to speak in your language."
Kongpob raised his shivering hands up as he signed, "I'm sorry Arthit."
Arthit chuckled as he shook his head, "Will you answer my one question?"
Kongpob looked at him confused before he nodded.
Arthit then looked at his father who watched the scene with a smile. The director nodded at his son with a smirk on his face.
Arthit looked back at Kongpob as he knelt down on one knee.
"Will you do the honour of being my lover? My boyfriend, Kongpob Suttilak?" Arthit asked as he held his hand out.
Kongpob's eyes widened for the umpteenth time this day as he looked at the smirking Arthit kneeling in front of him.
He looked at Chai and the others who started chanting 'Say Yes'.
Kongpob looked at Arthit. He took Arthit's hand and a without breaking the smile on both of their faces Kongpob pulled the latter up before he smashed their lips together.
"Yay!!!!!!"
The group exploded excitedly with cheering as they witness the two share their first kiss.
Arthit's eyes were wide as their lips touched. He stared at Kongpob who had his eyes closed and he saw the guy's cheeks turn red making him chuckle in between the kiss.
Arthit cupped Kongpob's cheeks as he deepened the kiss. He pressed his tongue against the soft pair of lips which parted a little giving him access.
Arthit pushed his tongue inside while the other nibbles on his lips. It felt as if the time had passed too fast for their liking as they separated due to the need to breathe.
Arthit rested his head on Kongpob's while the latter avoided his gaze.
"I love you Kong," Arthit whispered.
Kongpob's eyes widened as he heard the three words that came out of Arthit's mouth.
Kongpob looked up at him and mouthed an 'I love you' back.
"Enough of your romantic moment! You're making me tear up here."
Arthit pulled away as he heard his father's voice.
Kongpob finally seems to register that they were not alone and the smirks on all the people present there made him even more embarrassed. But he was happy, he didn't know that there were more people who truly care for him other than Chai and Tew, his restaurant co-worker.
Kongpob was startled when he was engulfed in a tight hug suddenly. He looked at Arthit in disbelief when he knew it was Arthit's father, Arthit only smiled softly at him.
"Welcome to our family, son."
And Kongpob's eyes watered when he heard the person call him 'son', he could feel that fatherly love in that voice that he soo much missed. It reminded him of his parents who he doesn't have a clear picture at all.
David released the hug and chuckled when he saw a tear slip down Kongpob's eyes which he wiped away.
"See me as your father from now on. Arthit's boyfriend is my son too. And don't doubt Arthit, if he had confessed his feelings to you that means that you mean a lot to him," David caressed Kongpob's hair.
"So now let's eat! It's my treat today!" David announced while the others cheered as they scrambled around to order their free food.
Kongpob felt an arm circling over his shoulders. He looked at Arthit who had a warm expression on his face. Kongpob wanted to ask thousands of questions to the latter and he knows Arthit does too.
But for now, they're going to enjoy this moment.
For Kongpob, this was the best birthday of his life. He finally found a reason to live his life.
