Best Friends
"She's in labor? Oh Idris, we have to take him to the hospital!"
"Yes, they'll take care of everything here, don't worry love." Idris says helping her up.
"Oh gosh, I feel like I'm gonna throw up."
"Don't do that, not all over your dress!" Bradley says.
"You guys, we have to go!" Ziah shouts.
"I can't move." Conner stays frozen.
"Aw, my baby." Jessica pouts. She then walks over to him and takes his hand in hers.
"Idris and I will drive you."
"Thank you."
Jessica pulls him down to her level and kisses his cheek.
"I love you."
Conner looks into his mothers eyes and suddenly feels a bit more calm.
"I love you too. You're gonna stay with me, right?"
"Of course! I won't leave that waiting room until they kick me out!"
"Heh.. Thanks. Well.. Let's go, I guess!"
"Let's Go!!"
**
"Here's her room. Are you coming with me, momma?"
"I don't think she wants me in there, honey."
"This isn't fair. She's already deciding the future of my baby. Why does she have so much say in everything?"
"Honey I.. I don't know. I'm so sorry. You need to talk to her."
"And say what?"
"You need to fight for your child, honey!"
"But what about his parents?"
"You are his parent right now, Conner. You can still fight for him!"
"Okay. Okay, I will!"
Jessica smiles and hugs her son. She kisses his cheek and rubs his back.
"You go in there and be a good coach, okay?"
"Yes ma'am!"
Conner walks in and Jessica returns to Idris.
"Hey. You okay?"
Jessica nods and sits beside him. "I just hate seeing him like this. This isn't fair."
"I know."
"He's my grandbaby! How do we just send him off?"
"I'm sorry, baby."
"Conner said he's gonna fight it but.. I mean it's late for that. I still want to have hope but.. I don't know." Jessica shakes her head.
"Maybe she'll change her mind once he's here."
"I hope so."

2 hours later.
Conner's POV.
"Abri?"
"What?"
"I don't think we should give the baby away."
"What the hell do you mean? I'm in labor and you want to talk about something we've already discussed? Why?"
"Because I think we can raise him. I know we can, and we can do it well!"
"Conner, there is a family on their way who thinks they're getting a little boy. How could you do that to them?"
"It can't be any worse than what you're doing to me."
"What do you mean? You agreed with me!" Abri raises her voice.
"No. No I didn't. You forced me to make a decision I wanted no part of!"
"Oh Please!"
"What about my feelings? I want this baby, Abri! He's not just yours!"
"Conner, you're lucky I even called to tell you I was here!"
"Look, if you're not going to let me keep him, then the least you can do is let me have my mom in here with me!"
"What? Hell no!"
"I want her to see him!" Conner then stands up and walks out of the room.
**
Jessica's POV.
"Honey, you look so uncomfortable." Idris says.
"I am, Idris." Jessica looks up to him with a miserable look on her face.
"Is there anything I can do?"
"Yeah, why don't you lift my dress and pull your kids out of me? That'll make me feel real nice!"
Idris chuckles. "Hopefully he'll be here soon." He rubs her back.
"She was dilated seven already. AND she's gotten an epidural. She's had to have been here for a few hours before calling him."
"Doesn't surprise me." Idris says as he rests his hand on her bump.
"She's such a bitch."
"I know.. Man, these two are having playtime, huh?" Idris smiles, trying to change the subject.
"Yep.
.... Sorry, I'm just so worried for my baby."
"I understand, darling. This has to be extremely difficult. I can't even imagine."
Just then Conner walks into the waiting room.
"Hey baby!" She smiles.
"Mom, come on." He waves her over.
"Where are we going?"
"I want you in there when he's born. If I can't raise him, then I want you to be there when I become a father."
Jessica's eyes fill with tears.
"Aw.. Oh that's so sweet!
Thank you, honey... Will you just help me up, please?"
"Sure!" Conner chuckles.
"Let us know if we can see him when he's born!" Bradley says.
"Of course! I want you all to see him and take pictures with him before.."
"Yay! We're almost uncle's, babe!" Ziah smiles.
"I know!"
"Ah and the babies!" He covers his mouth before walking over and rubbing Jessica's bump.
"Are you excited to be an aunt and uncle, little babes?"
Jessica laughs. "They're thrilled!"
**
2 hours later.
"His parents are here." Abri's mother says as she walks into the room.
"They're sitting with your husband." She says to Jessica.
"He's not her husband." Conner says.
"Well hell, I don't know who the hell he is! He's sitting with that black man out there!"
"Um, excuse me but we don't have to speak that way! His name is Idris."
"I don't fucking care!"
"Fucking racist ass bitch." Jessica mumbles.
Conner turns to Jessica and places his hand on her leg.
"Now I know where Abri gets her lovely personality from. Where did you meet this girl, Conner?"
"Quiet, ma. Not now.
How are you feeling?"
"I'm not gonna lie Conner, your brother and sister are being the biggest assholes right now."
Conner laughs. "Why? What are they doing?"
"Fighting like your father and uncle George on Thanksgiving way back in the day."
"Yikes! That must be uncomfortable."
"It is but I'm okay." Jessica sits back and sighs.
Conner laughs at her big belly sticking straight up.
"It's so huge."
"It sure is!" He places his hand on it. "Woah, they are fighting!"
"I told you!"
**
An hour later and Abri was pushing.
Conner was filled with so many different emotions. He couldn't wait to meet his son, yet he wanted time to slow down. He wasn't ready to hand him over to the adoptive parents.
Jessica stood beside him as he held Abri's leg and counted along with the doctor.
She saw her son grow right before her eyes. Of course he's done a lot of growing these past few months, but with each push he came closer to becoming a father. Conner had a look in his eyes Jessica has never seen before.
Jessica wiped her tears and looked down to see her grandson's squishy little face.
"Aw look at him!" She exclaimed. "He looks like Conner!" Jessica laughs.
Conner smiles and tells Abri to push once again.
One last push and the baby was out.
"I don't want to see him." Abri says.
Conner hated to hear her speak those words. Those were the first words the baby heard from his mother.
Conner then reached his arms out and said, "I want to hold him."
"Go over there, I don't want to see him."
"Would you like to cut the cord, dad?" A nurse asks.
Conner looked up. He felt time was moving so slowly.
"Dad? That's me?"
"Yes sir!" She smiles.
Jessica laughs.
"Oh yeah.. Sure! Of course!"
Conner cuts the cord then walks over to the side with the baby.
"Wow.. Hi little man.
... Mom, look at him!"
"He's so cute, baby."
"I wonder what they'll name him."
Jessica nods her head. "I don't know.. All I know is this little boy looks just like his daddy." Jessica smiles softly as her voice shakes.
"You think so?"
"Oh yes." She nods. "Exactly!"
"That's so cool.. I love you so much, little man. I hope you know how much I love you."
"He does, honey."
"How do I give him away, mom?"
Jessica sighs and softly touches the baby's blonde hair. "I don't know.. I wish I knew what to tell you baby, but I don't.. Not right now." Jessica says that last part in a whisper.
Conner looks at the baby just as he grabs his finger and stops crying.
Conner's eyes go wide as his son looks into his eyes. "Wow.. He's looking at me. Hi buddy.. It's daddy." He smiles. Conner then chuckles through his tears and looks up to his mother.
"I think we just became best friends."
