HAZEL & JUNGKOOK

Hazel stands in line for the bookstore.

She needed to return a textbook that was no longer needed in her class as it had been switched to an online textbook instead.

She patiently waits in line, scrolling through her phone as she waits. Surprisingly, the line was kind of long for being two weeks into the semester. She doesn't think much of it-- until her phone suddenly dies on her.

'What the heck?'

She furrows her eyebrows furiously. She slides her phone into her back pocket, accepting defeat. Boredom quickly overcomes her as she waits.

The girl's eyes wander around the bookstore. She examines the school's merchandise and swears under her breath how expensive they are, slightly shaking her head as she turns her head to look at the other side, which is filled with school supplies.

The line finally gets moving.

"I can help who's next," calls a voice from the front desk. Hazel makes her way to him, catching a glance at the tall man behind the counter.

But it wasn't just a glance.

Hazel had found herself staring at him for far more than three seconds. Her eyes couldn't believe the sight before her-- how such a man could be so good-looking.

She sets her book down on the counter. The man's eyes linger on her very brown orbs and flashes a smile at her.

It's like the sounds of everything and everyone around suddenly zoned out. It felt like he was the only person that existed in the whole world in front of her.

"Hello," he chimes, politely smiling at her. "Are you returning the book?"

"Oh," Hazel finally clicks back. "Yes, yes."

He asks for Hazel's ID, which she gives. While he does his own thing behind the counter, Hazel finds herself questioning everything about this man inside of her mind. Curiosity wins over her as she analyzes the man more, thinking to herself,

'Ah, so he's a staff here?'

'Wait, is he a staff? Maybe a student worker? I've never seen him before, especially in the bookstore.'

He scans her ID, then the textbook's bar code. He hands her ID back to her.

"Alright, you're all set. The refund will be issued within two to four days."

"Thank you,"

She takes her ID and walks away but with so much thought and so much adrenaline rushing through her blood. She hasn't felt this way for someone in such a long time-- ever since middle school and her 7th-grade crush. She kind of blushes, feeling the beat of her heart through her eardrum.

She gets out of the bookstore, only to turn around and steal another glance at the man before walking away. Her eyes wander to the sign that says "Bookstore" in front of the door, and back at the man.

-----------------------

"What? The bookstore?"

Hazel nods, taking a spoon of her food.

"Waahhhh, since when did you go around looking for a boyfriend?" Asks Mai teasingly.

"Yeah! Are you saying that you'll get a boyfriend soon, Hazel?" Kasumi jokes, eyeing Hazel with excitement. Hazel rolls her eyes while laughing, shaking her head.

"Tsch, don't be so excited," Hazel states. "All he did was scan my textbook."

"Yeah, but you like him." Ana replies, "Why don't you go and ask for his number?"

Hazel and Stephanie looks at each other. They both shake their heads in harmony.

"Stupid! Why would she ask for his number when she just met him?" Stephanie defends, rolling her eyes at the friend while Ana giggles.

Mai and Kasumi laughs in the background.

"Eyyy, stop. Don't you know? Sometimes a girl have to make the first move!" Ana sips her water.

Hazel sighs. "It's okay. He probably has a girlfriend anyway."

She puts her lunchbox back in her lunchbag.

While the man did catch Hazel by the eye, she didn't feel head over heels for the man. He was beautiful-- that was a fact. But the interaction alone wasn't enough to shake her heart where she'd find herself dreaming of a relationship with him.

Plus, she did keep the thought--- 'He probably does have a girlfriend.'

It was easy to get over the excited feeling and heart racing, but once in a few hours, she'd find herself thinking back to his polite smile and his sweet voice. And it would make her heart sink all over again.

But she always kept telling herself the same thing.

He was just a handsome guy that Hazel would probably pass right by and remember in her memory, but would never have further interaction.

----------------------------

The late start class has finally began today.

Hazel was one of the first students to arrive in class. As she sits, she settles down her things below the desk where she sits, pulling out her necessary items to take notes and get started with learning.

Five minutes pass, more students have begun filling the seats around. The professor is still nowhere to be found.

She goes through her laptop and opens up an assignment from another class that she has yet to complete. While waiting for the professor to get to class, she decides to work on that assignment ahead while still having some time.

While doing so, she hadn't noticed a certain someone pulling the chair next to her to have a seat. But she didn't mind, so she scooted over to make a little space. Distracted by her assignment, she didn't get a chance to properly look at the person.

"Hello!" Chimes the cheerful and upbright professor. She apologizes for being late and explains her daughter fell ill and had to rush to the hospital. Her husband came a little late to take over, so now she's here-- also a little late.

The class gets started.

-----------

"Find two person to work together on this participation activity. And remember, you have to have two other partners."

The professor demands, but of course, in a cheerful tone. That sets everyone standing up and reaching over to their peers for pairing up. Hazel kind of stared into the wall, feeling exhausted. She hated these kind of group activities. She'd always preferred to work alone.

"Hazel?"

The voice calling her name completely disrupts her thoughts, causing her head to fly to the person who sat next to her.

Hazel's eyes brighten.

"Yuri!" Hazel exclaims. "I didn't even notice you?!"

Yuri smiles at her. "I didn't either, but you know, once the professor pulls out the 'look for a partner' card, I had already started scanning everyone. And to my surprise, you're right next to me!"

Yuri was an old classmate of Hazel's from high school. Both girls were in the same chemistry class together and worked together a lot during labs. Yuri was always a nice and warm person, but after high school, the two didn't keep in touch.

"But we need to find one more person," Hazel whispers, silently scanning the room. Everyone has already found their two persons.

"Hey Jungkook," Yuri's eyes brighten up again when she sees the guy sitting behind Hazel. "You got a partner?"

"Yuri!" He exclaims.

Hazel turns aroud to glance at the person Yuri just invited. And to her surprise,

It was the bookstore guy.

She felt her heart sank to her stomach, butterflies forming and flying around, tickling every part of her guts. She could feel herself holding her breath unintentionally, feeling as if the world had stopped.

The look on his face reflected hers. He looked almost as surprised to see her right behind himself, sitting one seat down from him.

He could sort of laugh at himself for missing such an opportunity.

"Okay, let's work on this together?" Yuri asks. Hazel nods, looking back at Yuri, gulping as she tries to avoid those eyes from the man.

The three classmates work together on the participation activity for about ten minutes. They bring their papers to the front of the desk and turns it in, walking back to their seats.

Finally, Yuri speaks up, introducing Hazel and the man.

"Okay, okay. Since I know the both of you, I guess it's right that I introduce you both and then we three can stick together for this class, how's that sound?"

Hazel nods, along with the man.

"Hazel," she calls, pointing over to the man who sat behind. "This is Jeon Jungkook. He was my co-worker at the AMC theaters for about two years and then he decided to leave me behind and go start his college career," she laughs.

Jeon...Jungkook....

"And Jungkook, this is Hazel. She's an old high school classmate of mine."

Jungkook and Hazel momentarily locks eyes.

Feeling a sense of awkwardness, Hazel breaks the eye contact and glances back at Yuri, then at the wall behind Jungkook.

"Hi," Hazel quietly greets, her eyes travelling back to Jungkook's. "You work at the bookstore, don't you?"

"Yeah, I'm a student worker there." he answers, showing that same damn smile.

Hazel nods slowly. "Nice to meet you."

"Oh? You work at the bookstore, Jungkook?"

-----------------

At the end of class, Yuri, Hazel, and Jungkook had all exchanged phone numbers with one another. Yuri went on ahead and created a groupchat with the three of them so they could discuss future assignments and projects together, even bringing up a study date.

Hazel walks away from the class in the hall, looking down at her phone that had saved two new numbers from earlier.

She slowly comes to a stop, looking at Jungkook's name on her phone.

Her thumb hovers over his name, but she couldn't dare click on it.

'Jeon....Jungkook...'

She repeats his name in her mind.

She couldn't believe that the bookstore guy that she had met previously and was thinking of the past week... she suddenly had his phone number and name saved on her phone.

"Jeon Jungkook from Economics..." she whispers to herself. "Jeon Jungkook from the bookstore.."

A smile slowly creeps on her lips. A smile that she couldn't hide.

She clicks on her friends' groupchat and send multiple texts, the bright smile completely taking over her face.

I'm doomed.

- Hazel

What?

-Kasumi

He's literally in my Econ class.

- Hazel

And I have his number. WTF!
