Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?
"Elsa," Andar whispered, poking her head above his sister's bed. "Psst! Elsa! Wake up, wake up, wake up!"
Sleepily, she groged, "Andar, go back to sleep..." She turned away from him, not at all pleased when he plopped on top of him dramatically.
"I just can't!" he sighed, exasperated. A hand dramatically fell over his forehead. "The sky's awake. So I'm awake. So we hafta play!"
"Go play by yourself."
Elsa turned just enough to push her little brother off the bed, falling with an "Oof!" Defeated, but he thought for a moment on how to get his lazy sister out of bed. A small gasp escaped him lips and he jumped back up, trying to force her eye open.
"You wanna build a snowman?"
He let go of his eye and both opened, Elsa showing off a cheeky smile.
-
"C'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon!" Andar kept yelling as he pulled Elsa downstairs, who kept shushing him, looking around for any signs that their parents would wake up.
The door to their ballroom opened, Andar yelling excitedly, "Do the magic! Do the magic!"
"Okay!" she laughed. With her hands, she worked up a flurry of snow, Andar looking at her palm in awe. "Ready?" He nodded excitedly.
At his command, the burst of energy flew up, causing it to snow. Andar jumped around the room, screaming, "THIS IS AMAZING!"
"Watch this!" Elsa stomped as hard as she could, turning the floor into ice. Andar slipped, falling, still giggling.
-
After the last snowball had been hoisted up, the siblings decorated the snowman with buttons and sticks. Elsa, behind it, moved his arms, dropping her voice. "Hi, I'm Olaf and I like warm hugs!"
"I love you, Olaf!" Andar cried, jumping into a hug with the snowman.
-
Elsa helped push Olaf for Andar so he could 'dance' on the ice with him.
-
Behind Andar, Elsa pushed the sled off so that they went flying down one of his mountains of snow.
Laughing his head off, Andar cried, "Tickle bumps!"
-
"Catch me!" Andar called, jumping on the mountains of snow.
Elsa created another one for her brother, grinning at him. "Gotcha!" She really did love him, even if he was a little annoying in the mornings. But days like this made it worth the sacrifice of precious sleep.
"Again!"
He was caught again, the time more hastily. "Wait!" She began to worry, realizing he could fall and crack his skull open. "Slow down!"
She slipped on the floor, disoriented for a moment, until she saw Andar about to jump again.
"Andar!"
A shot of ice left her hand and hit him in the head as he jumped. With a grunt, he fell into the snow, unmoving. Elsa ran to him, taking him in her arms. "Andar?!"
A streak of white danced through his hair until it reached the tip.
Shaking her head, she screamed out, "Mama, Papa!"
Shards of ice came out of the ceiling as she wept over him, mumbling, "You're okay, Andar...I've got you..."
King Agnarr swung the frozen door open with his wife by his side. "Elsa, what have you done?!" he cried, more concerned than angry. Both parents rushed over. "This is getting out of hand!"
"It was an accident!" she insisted, but looked down at the knocked-out Andar, realizing it was still his fault. "I'm sorry, Andar..."
Queen Iduna took her into her arms. "He's ice cold!" she cried.
Agnarr put his hands on him before looking up, nodding. "I know where we have to go."
-
The two children watched the royal family's carriage go by, but something else intrigued the boy instead. Looking at the ground, he whispered, "Ice?" He grinned at Y/n and asked, "Wanna go on an adventure?"
Y/n, on the sled with a carrot, scrunched her nose. "You wanna follow around a buncha royals all day? C'mon, Krissy, who cares?"
"Y/n!" Krissy - Kristoff - yelled at her. "Ice! What if maybe I don't know they have some kinda a secret?! We could be rich!"
"Meh." She leaned back on the sleigh.
Kristoff shared a glance with Sven, both of them nodding with a smirk as Kristoff got on.
"C'mon, Sven!"
He began running, Y/n trying to sit up as they went, but kept falling on her back. "Kristoff, I hate you slow down!"
"To the royals we go!"
-
Getting out, the family made their way to the middle of the rocked ruins. Iduna still held Andar while Elsa stayed close to Agnarr.
"Please! Help!" the king cried. "My son...!"
The rocks rolled down the hill to him and, one by one, popped up, revealing themselves to be trolls.
"It's the king!"
The children rode up behind a rock, Kristoff nudging Y/n. "Trolls!" he squealed.
"Yeah, I know, I see."
That rock then popped up. "Shush! I'm trying to listen!" She pulled them in closer, still staring intently at the family. Sven, not really interested in them, reached up and licked her cheek, gaining her attention. She smiled fondly at them. "Cuties. I'm gonna keep you!" She pulled them into a hug as she made her decision.
Another one rolled and popped out, this one being much older than the rest, hints of grey in his green hair. "Your Majesty." He bowed, but got quickly to work, taking Elsa's hand, Agnarr staying close to him. "Born with the power or cursed?"
Hesitatingly, Agnarr looked at Iduna in question, then answered, "Uh, born. And they're getting stronger."
He went from Agnarr to Iduna, motioning her. "Here, here."
She bent over, the old troll placing a hand on Andar's head, breathing a sigh of relief. "You are lucky it wasn't his heart. The heart is not so easily changed, but the head can be persuaded."
"Do what you must," Agnarr pleaded.
Magic came from his hands as he worked on Andar, declaring, "I recommend we remove all magic, even memories of magic, to be safe. But don't worry. I'll leave the fun." Memories of magic changed to the siblings playing on an ordinary snowy day of skating, snowmen, and sleigh riding. Outside. Like normal children.
Elsa glanced at her brother, hesitantly speaking up, "But he won't remember I have powers?"
Her father put a hand on her shoulder. "It's for the best."
The troll gently guided her to where he could display a vision. "Listen to me, Elsa. There is beauty in your magic."
A blue silhouette of a young woman creating a snowflake appeared.
"But also great danger."
The vision turned red, the snowflakes turning into spikes.
"You must learn to control it. Fear will be your enemy."
The spikes rose up and overtook her.
Terrified, the princess hid in her father's pant leg, who held her protectively. "No!" he exclaimed, then calmed his voice. "We'll protect her. She can learn to control it, I'm sure. Until then, we'll lock the gates."
-
The doors to the castle closed.
-
"We'll reduce the staff."
-
A maid pulled the curtains shut.
-
"We'll limit her contract with people and keep her powers hidden from everyone...including Andar."
-
Looking at her stuff in her room, Andar ran out, confused, to find his sister. Her stuff had been moved! He had to tell her so they could get it back!
But all he found was Elsa sadly walking into a different room. She glanced at him and waved sadly, then shut the door, leaving Andar to look down, confused.
The excuse he had been given? Puberty. All well and good for changing rooms, but why did his older sister no longer want to see him?
Again, puberty.
Puberty was a bitch.
-
Outside, the courtyard was covered in snow. Andar looked at it excitedly, bouncing around, before running to his sister's room. Once he reached the door, he called in the most innocent voice, "Elsa?"
Knock knock knock-knock knock
Andar:
Do you wanna build a snowman?
C'mon, let's go and play
He sat at the door, as if defeated, then looked under.
Andar:
I never see you anymore
Come out the door
It's like you've gone away
-
He took out two dolls of him and Elsa that the royal seamstress had made.
Anna:
We used to be best buddies
And now we're not
I wish you would tell me why
-
Andar:
Do you wanna build a snowman?
He put his lips up to the door.
Andar:
It doesn't hafta be a snowman
"Go away, Andar..."
Dejected, he walked away.
Andar:
Okay, bye...
-
Elsa watched Andar in the courtyard with a small smile, leaning in to take a closer look at him. She jumped back when she began freezing the window.
-
"The gloves will help," Agnarr insisted, slipping them on her hands. "See? Conceal it."
"Don't feel it," she continued.
"Don't let it show."
-
Again and again, Andar would knock on Elsa's for years, up into their adolescence. This day was unlike any other. He ran up and knocked as he always tried.
Knock knock knock knock knock
Andar:
Do you wanna build a snowman?
Or ride our bike around the halls?
He rode his bike down the stairs, promptly crashing down the stairs and toppling into one of the decorative suits of armor.
Andar:
I think some company is overdue
I've started talking to the pictures on the walls
"Hang in there, Joan," he said to one, lying on a couch.
Andar:
It gets a little lonely
All these empty rooms
Just watching the hours tick by...
Sprawled out in front of a clock, he clicked his tongue, eyes darting in time with the metronome.
-
"I'm scared!" Elsa cried in agony, backing away from her parents. "It's getting stronger!" Her door was shut tight and locked, snow covering her room.
"Getting upset only makes it worse. Calm down." Agnarr reached out, but his daughter pulled back in a panic.
"No! Don't touch me!" Calmer, she added, "Please...I don't wanna hurt you..."
Both parents looked at her painfully, Iduna putting a hand on her husband's shoulder, a discussion of what needed to happen silently passing over them.
-
Andar slid through the hallways, coming across Elsa's door. He glanced at it, but then walked away.
-
"See you in two weeks!" Andar pulled both of his parents into a warm hug.
-
Elsa bowed to her parents, looking up painfully. "Do you have to go...?"
Both smiled at her, Agnarr reassuring confidently, "You'll be fine, Elsa."
-
In two weeks, the funeral was held due the king and queen. The whole funeral, Andar had cried his eyes out, the servants all checking in on him at one point or another during the after-party. Even when he had stopped crying, his eyes were still red.
After the service, a curtain was drawn upon the portrait of the deceased monarchs.
As usual, Elsa was notably absent.
-
Still in his mourning clothes, Andar sullenly walked to Elsa's door. Standing in front of it, he hesitated, but...
Knock knock knock
"Elsa?"
Andar:
Please, I know you're in there...
People are asking where you've been
They say, "Have courage" and I'm trying to
I'm right out here for you
Just let me in...
He slid down the door, voice beginning to break.
Andar:
We only have each other
It's just you and me
What are we gonna do?
...do you wanna build a snowman?
He leaned her head against the back of the door, tears falling out of his eyes.
-
Elsa had also been sitting at the other side of the door, heartbroken. She had lost her brother and now her parents...
Her head went to the door, as well, her eyes closed. She buried her head in her knees, sobs shaking her body, snow falling from the ceiling.
