CHAPTER TWENTY SIX
I looked at him giving him a glare. He was still lying on the sofa comfortably. My blood was boiling and I so wanted to hit him. He totally ignored me, continuing to watch the football match as if I wasn't even there. He turned up the volume to its greatest level. He was calm and it looked like that he had slept for hours. I couldn't bear it more and stormed upstairs. I slammed the door as hard as I could, a loud thud bounding around the hallway. I went to the bathroom and washed my face, then undressed myself and peered out of the window briefly. It was the start of August the weather was muggy and wet. It was calm and peaceful outside. I was still remembering those days with Jennie and John. Those long walk in August and September. We used to go for a walk at weekends, John usually used to join us on weekends. That calm and still weather and those walks along the road side, John always urging to go for a late night coffee at Starbucks.
Weather in August used to be a little better than July. Those mesmerising moments were all over, mind. It was the weekend so I decided to go on a walk by myself.
Jennie will be having fun and celebrating her night with her beloved hubby Paul. She was now content, as she thinks that I am happy in my married life. Little did she know, my life was miserable, and always will be.
I took my coat and went downstairs. I left from the back door so that I couldn't see his face. I began walking along the road side. There was no much traffic in this area and it was so serenely peaceful, nobody else walking this late. I was looking at the big houses where all the big managers and CEO's of different companies lived. It was much secured and well-built area. I was walking slowly lost in my thoughts but a young person on a bicycle came out of nowhere and barrelled into me. There was a boy on it and he felt down, getting up after a few short seconds to check his bike then me.. My whole foot and fingers were injured. The young boy lent me his hand but I was unable to stand up.
"What the hell woman? Are you blind?" he said, chewing gum thoughtlessly. As if it were second nature to always have a piece of gum forcing your jaw to work all the time. He was in his early teenage and he was still smiling, despite the fact I was still on the ground and couldn't gather the willpower to ignore the pain to stand.
"What? Are you out of your mind?" I asked him indignantly, glaring at him. " You were the one who came along the pedestrian lane!" I cried out. I hissed in pain and put some pressure on my foot to dull the pain.
He bent down on his knees and looked at my injured foot. I was lucky because I always carried a very tiny medical kit in my pocket. I took it out and applied a soothingly cool ointment on my foot.
"Whoa! People keep medical kit in their pockets on this century?" He asked, joking around, and put an arm under mine to assist me in getting up.
"They do if they're a doctor," I smirked.
"I see! Being elegant, beautiful and smart you are doctor as well! Perfect for being someone's girlfriend." He smirked, winking towards me, and sat on his bicycle.
"Okay, you should apologize now," I said folding my hands, fed up with his silly flirting games.
"How can I refuse such a beautiful woman? I am sorry." He grinned back at me, chuckling. He put his foot on the plastic pedal of his bike and was about to push down to it.
"Okay," I replied limping.
"So, can I walk I mean I can move by your side?" He asked, desperate to know my reply.
"Why don't you go on the other side? " I said, still limping.
"Do you live nearby?" He asked, still riding his bicycle slowly by my side.
"Yeah in Street Number seven," I replied curtly to him in a low voice.
"Wow! I live there too," He chuckled.
I didn't want to talk to him and just wanted to return home. My leg was still injured, I wanted to go home by car and get away from this pushy boy. He was asking question after question, pausing only to allow me to reply. He was a very young aged boy and seemed like a spoiled brat.
"Do you have a boyfriend? I am curious to know. If not what about dating me? I know you must be in your early twenties, age difference doesn't matter if we are in love. About me, I am in highschool.." He kept speaking untill I interrupted him.
"But.."
"Well listen, I have previously dumped two girls but I think you are my last destiny. I know It's just our first ...."
"Stop!!" I shouted.
"Give me a break! How can you even love someone you have just met," I was getting annoyed.
"Well it's not impossible if you believe in fairy tails. Love at first sight and all of that," he laughed, waggling his pale fingers in my direction.
"No! I think you are high," I turned around to move on the other side.
He left his bicycle and followed me again.
"What do you want? I think I should call my husband to slap you right in your face," I was in anger. He was still in shock and he didn't speak a word.
"What a piece of crap! I am older than you idiotic boy," I grumbled and stood at a corner waiting for a taxi.
"You.. You are married? How lucky is that guy?! I wish you would have waited for a prince like me." he said in a low tone. I could sense the waves of determination coming of him but knew it was most likely teenage hormones.
I didn't reply him because he was extremely annoying and a completely crazy guy.
"Can I ask your house address?" he looked into my eyes.
I told him the address unwillingly because he was continuously nagging me.
"Then we are neighbours I guess," he giggled.
"What?" I was astonished.
"Probably. What's your husband's name?" he asked curiously, probing deeper.
"Walter Scott, " I told him, flinging the name off my lips as if it could save me from this young creep.
"Don't tell me! Mr Walter James Scott. That millionaire guy. The owner of James co-operation?" he asked, surprised. I shoved his hand off my shoulders where he had placed them.
"What's so shocking?" I raised my eyebrows.
"He's a cold, rude and arrogant guy. Though we were once great friends but then.., Well leave it.." he sighed and looked at the old tree.
"Then what? Do you know him? I mean, are you guys close?" I asked him.
"Yes we were. When I was very young. He was my father's good friend. My father worked for his company. Mr. Scott was my father's close friend, as was Walter. By the way I was under the impression that Mr. Walter was betrothed to Miss Hannah, so how did he marry you?" he looked at me with a confused expression.
I was about to reply to him but suddenly a car materialised in front of us. A woman was sitting inside that large vehicle.
"Come on Daniel! You have to home at 10:30, you know your mother's rules!" The old woman shouted.
"Coming granny," replied Daniel as I noted his name.
"Bye, I will see you very soon Miss. Beautiful. There are a lot of things we both need to talk about. As we are neighbours, we should be able meet often." And with those words he slid into the car and disappeared down the road.
For a while I was much confused and my mind was shaking. He knew a lot about Walter's family and Walter's life. My phone began ringing and it had been ringing for more than half an hour according to my notifications. Someone wanted to talk...
XXX
It was about 11:30 pm and Laura was not home yet. Walter searched her everywhere but she was nowhere. He had been trying to call her for more than half an hour but there was not a single reply. He took his keys and went out to look for her. She was nowhere and it was almost midnight. Finally she picked her phone.
"Laura! Are you crazy? Where are you?" Walter couldn't control his anger.
Laura explained the area she was in to him and Walter rushed his car with a speed of aeroplane. He flung himself in, jammed the key into the ignition and flew off down the street to find her. He began to slow as he reached the area she had described but it was several minutes before he was able to find Laura, standing at the corner near the old tree. He ran out of his car and held her arms in rage.
"Get in the car!" he pulled her with him into the car.

I received Walter's call and in ten minutes he was there. He was very angry and disappointed. He pushed me into the car and drove. We both remained quiet. I was looking out of the window and he was driving in a slow speed. Suddenly he spoke up, finally breaking the tension that had been so thick you could have cut it was a knife.
"Do you have any idea what have you done? You made me so worried. Why did you leave without telling me or Butler?" he looked at me, glaring.
I didn't know why was he so mad at me. I did the same thing what he did to me. I wasn't in the mood to argue with this thick-headed idiot.
"I know I couldn't make it to Jennie's wedding but if that's the reason that you left home then you are wrong." he was slowly turned the car in a different direction.
"Where are we going now?" I said in a low tone, almost feeling dizzy.
"Hell," he replied and drove the car faster, breaching the speed limit.
"Your place over there is already reserved so you don't need to rush" I smirked.
"Well how about we make a reservation for you as well?" he snickered.
Sometimes his answers are more sarcastic than mine so I was forced to pause for a moment while I thought of an appropriate comeback.
"Here we are," Walter stopped his car and instructed me to get out of the car. I manged to stand up and get out of the car but my foot was still aching. However I was able to walk a few steps even though I was limping and I caught his arms after a couple of strides.
"Ouch!" I winced, grabbing his arms tightly.
"What happened?" he asked, a trace of concern colouring his voice as he looked at my injured foot.
"A little injury," I said attempting to walk again.
"You should have told me so I could have taken you home instead of Starbucks," he put his arms around mine and helped me to cross the road.
"It's okay," I mumbled. I was blushing the way he held me in his arms. It was warm and comfortable. Friendly even. We entered the Starbucks, and sat in the corner. I was angry at him but I guessed he was more mad at me.
"Miss Laura." he tried to speak.
"Yes?" I answered.
"I am sorry for not coming to Miss Jennifer's wedding. I tried but I was stuck in some important matters in the company. All I can do is apologize, I know my words have no meaning, but I have nothing else to say. I know you must have waited for me for long." he looked deep into my eyes.
"It's fine, I understand but I am a bit disappointed. Anyways, I didn't wait for long. I expected this from you." I replied somewhat angrily.
We both drank the coffee and went back home. On the drive there, he asked me about the cancer society money seekers.
"They didn't come back after that. They're losers and I know they won't ever come back because I warned them. I think I have the guts to over rule people. Because of the fact that I stood up for my children, they didn't show up again." I chuckled.
"Are you sure? I mean they were scared of you and vanished?" he looked almost confused.
"Of course." I smiled.
We had reached our home, and I had already ran into the house and walked upstairs.
"Laura, don't go for walk alone the next time. It worries me even if you are a bit late." He looked serious.
"Why? I think you're the one who is least worried about me!" I cried.
"Maybe the last, but not the least." He said, and with those words he left to go to his room.
The next morning, I left early. It was 7:00 am when I reached the hospital. I was still pondering over Walter's words. Last night was hectic. Meeting that guy, and Walter's kind words; I was almost lost.
"Good morning Laura darling." Said a voice from behind and I was sure it was John.
"Here are some biscuits for you. You have to a lot of work today. You know our Jennie is deeply sleeping in Paul's arm." He patted on my shoulder.
"You better do your work. I guess there are no surgeries for today." I took a deep breath. I washed my hands and started my work.
Today, apart from brain tumours, I had patients with other complications. So I had to go downstairs to see the biopsy and radiological reports as well.
After dealing with my all patients, trying to find out diagnosis really took a lot of time.
John and I both helped each other in reading the reports diagnosing whether it was tumour or another disorder.
I reached home very late, at about 10:00 pm. Butler had gone because he had an emergency, so I cooked dinner and waited for the ice man to come.
I waited for him for long time, but I knew it was of no use. He was getting revenge. So I ate my dinner and started to do a work on laptop.
I soon got tired, because it was already 2:00am. I didn't know what was happened, but I usually got worried if he came that late.
I heard his car horn and went downstairs. I tried act normal, as if I hadn't been awaiting his arrival, so I decided to causally drink water.
Walter came in, dragging his feet on the floor. I was shocked to see him with almost half of his body injured. There was blood dripping from all over his mouth and chest. He held himself at the corner of the wall, breathing loudly as if he had just ran a marathon.
Noticing his troublesome state, I ran towards him.
"Walter!!!" I cried.
I took my long sleeves and blew my warm breath, into it slowly placing it over his injured mouth.
He resisted, removing my hands. I again put it on his wounds. He grabbed my hand and pushed me aside.
"I am fine. It's only a mild injury." He said, trying to walk upstairs. He was too weak to go upstairs so he went into one of the rooms downstairs. I still stood in silence.
"Did you drink? What happened? Please say something? I will medicate you in minute."
He didn't reply to me and went into the room. I ran as fast as I could I took all medication things needed and ran into the bedroom he had previously entered.
There, he lay on the bed, practically unconscious.
I moved forward and asked him to sit up. He didn't seem to be able to do it on his own, so I helped him. It was obvious that he was in severe pain, and he couldn't bear it.
As fast as possible, I took out a cotton ball, and soaked it in medicine. I was afraid to go near to him, but I had no choice.
I was about to place it on his wounded area but he stopped me.
"Don't touch me! I don't need you to pity me. Your hatred is enough." He was rubbing his feet on the bed.
I didn't reply him because this wasn't the right time.
"Quiet!" I placed my fingers on his lips and it looked like he was looking at me.
I applied the medicine gently on his injuries and wounds. I was so close to him, close enough to hear his heartbeat. He didn't look at my side.
Then, he lied flat and I applied the bandages over his leg and arms. He was avoiding that eye contact, while I was trying to escape his glares.
After I was done, I kept a chair nearby his bed, and gave him warm milk.
Despite all the nice gestures I had recently done, he was still glaring me. I knew he hated me even more now, but how could I leave him like this?
He fell asleep and I was still awake, watching over him like his guardian angel he didn't know he had.
The blood had stopped flowing from his cuts, and he was in deep sleep.
I laid on a small sofa near the bed, and fell asleep.
XXX
The next morning Walter woke up seeing himself covered with bandages. Quickly, he changed himself and took a shower.
He was still feeling pain, and his body was aching badly.
He didn't have the courage to see Laura, so he decided to go to the office despite being extremely injured.
Laura was lying on the sofa, with her hands lying on the floor. The cold wind blowing made her hair move like leaves on a tree. Walter picked her up and placed her on the bed, cover her with a soft blanket.
He was looking at her, and he couldn't stop smiling. He wanted to forever look at her innocent face.
He gently moved towards her and kissed her forehead gently. Knowing this was the only thing he could do in return, and left for office.
