CHAPTER TWENTY ONE
Well, today was my first day back to work, I set the alarm on my phone for the first time last night. Before the marriage, it was Jen that used to wake me up, and sure… I could of gotten the butler to do it, but I could do it myself. And by 8:00am sharp, I was already heading to the stairs to get something to eat.
I passed by Walter's room, it was quiet, maybe he was still asleep. Butler greeted me with a smile and directed me to a big hall where we usually had our dinner and lunch. The whole dining table was decorated with a lot of things to eat. I looked around nervously, still complete silence. I called butler and asked him about Walter.
"Master left very early this morning," he replied pouring me some tea.
"How early?" I asked him shaking my head, I couldn’t believe that he woke up before me.
"Around six,” he said, placing some toast on my plate. I paused for a moment then I thought it was useless thinking about that guy.
After breakfast, I took my files and left for the hospital. I finally had my own car; I guess it wasn’t that big of a deal for Walter, he had over a dozen, but I really did appreciate it. It was a fairly nice car as well, I wasn’t complaining. It was a cute light blue… Sports car? I wouldn’t know, I’m not a car person.
Walter left his house way before his wife had even thought of getting out of bed, and before work, decided to stop by the close family friend’s house. He remembered coming here as a small child to play with the couple’s daughter, not knowing the hatred that would eventually rise from all of this. He knocked on the door, hoping he could maybe leave if it was too early. But no, soon after knocking, a servent opened the door and moved to the side, letting him inside the house.
"Mistress, Mr. Walter is here," said the servant to an older woman as he closed the door to the house.
She was dressed properly and looked a very wealthy woman, tacky… But wealthy.
"Oh, Walter, how lovely it is to see you!" she said smiling to him, giving the man a quick hug before Hannah ran down the stairs and grabbed Walter’s arm quickly. Smiling the whole time.
Walter did his best to get out of her grasp as quickly as possible.
"Walter dear, how mean and selfish you are,” the woman started, his tone changing as he noticed his rude behavior, “You forgot all our debts and married that lower class girl. I made you rise and all that you are standing in front of me is because of my money, my hard work. I can forgive you if-" she tried to speak but Walter interrupted her.
“Now listen here, you two,” he practically growled at them, “ you used my father’s money, and in fact, until now, I have given you all you have. So if you have common sense, you will stop this now.” He could feel the rage growing inside him as he spoke; he’s wanted to say that for a while.
"This is not the young man your father raised!" she said, sounding offended as he began to walk away.
For a moment everyone was quiet but then Hannah spoke, "So, what brings you here, Walter?" she continued, "Are you sorry for marrying that woman and not me?"
"No,” he started, and he smiled at her amused, “I don't think I will ever regret that.” He stopped just to see her reaction, “But let me tell you one thing, don't ever try to hurt Laura. This time I am letting go of it, but next time I won't stand it! Do you understand? If one more time she cries because of you, I won't spare you! Got it?" Walter then turned away and walked away without another word, leaving the two in shock.
I returned to home a bit later today, the first day back after a vacation is always the worst. It was a really tiring day for me, I had to catch up with work and clients, and I would be booked for a while.
Though when I first got home, I was surprised to see Walter already there and eating dinner, he was about half way done when I joined him. Tomorrow was Sunday and I wanted him to take me somewhere.
"Are you busy tomorrow?" I asked him finishing my dinner.
"Well I have a lot of office work to do. Anything special?" he said rashly.
"Oh... no nothing," I smiled at him as he finished his dinner.
"Okay then, I’m going to bed early then, goodnight," he said leaving me at the table.
Eventually I went to bed as well, an hour or two after Walter. But that sleep did not last long. I woke up to the sound of a knock on my door. It was the butler.
"There are some visitors for you downstairs. It is raining so I let them in the dining hall," he explained to me.
"Visitors?" I rubbed my eyes.
"They are kids," he replied.
I ran downstairs and rushed to the dining hall. "Miss Laura! Miss Laura! They all started yelling.
"What are you guys doing here?" I asked surprisingly.
"Mr. John brought us here, " they all said smiling.
"Oh boy! Okay everybody let's go and play in the garden. We'll enjoy the rain,” I say and lead them towards the garden.
"Hurrah!" shouted the little ones. It was raining and cold wind was blowing. I loved rain when I was a child and till now. We all played and enjoyed the rain. It stopped for a while . At that time we all played soccer.
Walter was asleep in his room, though woke from the noises made by children. He opened the window of his room. He looked down at the garden. He leaned his hands on the window side. Looking down he could see his wife enjoying the lovely rain. She was playing and laughing. He smiled to himself still looking at her. As he was looking at her she looked at his window. He escaped her eyes and shut the window.
After the rain stopped I dried all of them and asked butler to make them something warm. I saw Walter was peeking from his window. I was afraid he might be angry because of bringing children to his house. After they all warmed up themselves I quickly send them back safely.
As I left them at in the car it started raining again. "Heaven is blessing us today."
I started playing in the rain again. I loved the smell of mud and the sound of the rain droplets. Walter came downstairs and drank his coffee. He saw me getting wet in rain.
"Why don't you join too?" I asked him.
"Do you think I am a kid? I hate getting wet. I am doubtful about your age,” he smirked.
"And Mr. Walter no one is as boring as you are," I said sarcastically. He threw a towel on my face.
"Make sure you dry yourself before catching a cold," he laughed and went away.
I laughed and dried myself. Well at least he does some good work too.
