CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT

At that moment, I felt heartbroken and wretched. I wanted to punch him
with all my might. I just wanted to kick him as hard as I could for
treating me like a piece of trash. Just like a crumpled up ball of
paper. I tried to swallow all of these painful feelings.

"What's with that long face?" he grinned as he looked at me. He was
looking more handsome than ever with his black, three-piece suit he
had been wearing, as well as the expensive citizen watch on his manly
wrist. His thick, long, brown hair covered his forehead. He was
twirling and brushing it through his hands. His blue eyes stared into
mine constantly. My mouth had dropped and I rolled my eyes constantly
to avoid a possibly awkward situation. I don't know why I was looking
at him in that sense, even after what he had done to me. Obviously,
any woman who was to see him at this moment would have high levels of
hormones and goose bumps.

"Everything you need is provided for you, and butler will be with you
to keep you company. I hope you will be okay because I'll be busy with
my meetings, so don't call me." He said picking up the last bag and
throwing it into the car, he was patiently waiting for my reply.

"Fine, I won't call you because I have other things to do instead of
calling you," I replied to him sarcastically and rushed to the main
entrance leaving him still and annoyed.

I could see his face become red with anger and he quickly ordered the
driver to take him to the airport. I was still on the gate watching
his car. I wanted to see him because he wouldn't be returning until
after a week has passed. The car quickly left and the last thing I
heard was the loud noise of the engine taking off like a rocket.

"Bye, ice man," I said to myself in a low voice. Butler came and asked
if I needed anything, as well as if I wanted to have dinner.

"No thanks, I'll be going upstairs. Could you please bring me a cup of
coffee? I'll be on the terrace." I told butler and went upstairs into
my room. I felt like I had already begun to miss Walter as I passed by
his locked room. I had no one to talk to because Jennie was in Germany
for her honeymoon, John was out of the city, and Ella was in Mexico to
attend an international meeting. I entered my room, which was quite
messy and dusty because I hadn't been home for a week, then I quickly
cleaned it up and went to take a refreshing shower. The whole time I
thought about how I was going to stay here for a week without him, and
I became afraid of sleeping alone at night without having anyone near
my room. I swallowed hard, and as the cold water sprinkled on my face,
I felt like I needed to wash these terrifying thoughts out of my mind.
I quickly dried myself and went up to the terrace to sit on the chair
near the wall.

I was still thinking about my shitty and boring life married to
Walter. I had tried almost everything, but it seemed as if his heart
really was made of ice, and I just can't get through it. Those walls
he had built up, no one can break through them and make him human
again.

"Mistress, your coffee," suddenly, Butler came out of nowhere, and I
almost screamed out of fear.

"Goodness! You scared me half to death," I said, taking a deep breath.
I was trying to control the fear of being alone.

I took a sip of my coffee and relaxed on the chair. I stared at the
sky, which was almost full of stars, and the moon gleaming like it had
never done before. I became lost in the beauty of the sky and I just
sat there staring for what seemed like an eternity.

"Shall I leave?" butler came forward and looked at me.

"No way! You'll be with me throughout this whole week, you won't leave
me for a minute." I guess I came off as a bit creepy, judging by his
facial expressions.

"As you say," he quickly turned his face towards the wall and stared
off into nothing. I was afraid of being alone, especially in a house
as big as this, it was almost like a palace. Never, in my entire life,
have I been alone like this. I had been used to Jennie, because she
would never leave me alone, not even as a child.

"He will return next Thursday, right?" I stood up from my chair, then
headed towards the stairs.

"Yes," he walked with me.

"Umm... Butler?" I managed to ask him.

"Yes,"

"Did Walter get worried about me when I left the house? I mean, did he
ask you about where I was?" It was worse than letting down my ego, but
I had to know.

"Yes, Mistress, I was the one who asked your friend, Mr. John. He
informed us of your whereabouts. He became worried when you didn't
come home." His tone was rather serious. He must be kidding! Was he
worried? Oh, please!

"You'll sleep in the room near the corner, as I am really afraid of
sleeping alone, okay?" I told him, then went into my room. I quickly
changed into my night suit and fell asleep. Because I had turned on
many alarms, I managed to wake up and get ready to go to the hospital.
As I went downstairs, I looked towards the empty chair near the table
and began to feel as if I was drowning in the deepest part of the
ocean.

I somehow ate my breakfast, quickly went to my working station, and
began to check patients out where I had left off before.

The day quickly passed by, and I paid a visit to the Cancer Society.
Everything was normal, and I had few hours to spend, so I decided to
help the children out by making dinner for them. I had dinner with the
little children and my heart began to fill with glee as I saw their
smiles and laughter fill the room. I returned to my home and had a
short chat with Butler. He told me some of his stories, like about how
a German girl cheated on him and other stories about his family.

Two days had passed, and I felt like I was going to die of boredom, so
I decided to take a good tour of Walter's house. It was Saturday, and
I was on a holiday vacation that the hospital had given me. I planned
to change the setting of the lounge and the garden area throughout the
day. I cleaned up everything, and by evening almost everything had
been done. I don't know what happened, but it suddenly felt as if my
head was shaking. My body started shivering and I felt a severe pain
in my legs. I somehow managed to make it upstairs to take some
medicine for relief. I felt extremely sick and had started missing
Walter again. I didn't want to call him and break my promise because
it went against my pride. I had no choice but to call John and ask him
to come over, but I knew it was not possible for him to leave his
mother to come over and help.

Butler made some herbal medicine for me that worked, thankfully. The
next day, Sunday, I was glad that it was off, so I would get time to
rest. I didn't get a single call from Walter. I wanted to call, but
what he had done to me made it impossible for me to work up the
courage to contact him.

The next morning I woke up, I received horrible news from one of my
servants, saying that butler had left in an emergency. He had to visit
his family, as there was a problem, and he had no choice but to leave.

"What? You all have no duties on Sundays? This is shit!" I cried,
covering my face in sorrow.

They all had to leave as it was an off day for them. I had to stay all
by myself in this massive house.

Why have you done this to me, Walter? Why? I'll never forgive you for
this! Never!

It was evening, so I wrapped myself with a blanket and turned on the
TV with the volume all the way up. The weather was getting rough
outside because it was about to rain. The pain was getting much worse,
and I tried to cure it by lying still in bed. The pain seemed to
become progressively worse with every drop of water that hit the
ground outside. I was sweating, and my whole body began to shiver.
Now, thunder had begun, and the worst of my fears was the sound of
thunder. I plugged my ears with my fingers and left the room. I slowly
stepped out and held myself up the best I could. I dialed Walters
number, but it wasn't going through. My pain was worsening, and it
seemed as if I was going to drop dead any minute. I couldn't bear it
anymore, so I sat on the stairs with my whole body aching.

Walter! Where are you? Someone, please help me!

The whole house felt like it was shaking and I began to feel dizzy,
but I managed to get up and get some water. Just as I stepped on the
second stair going down, my foot slipped and I began to roll down the
steps violently. I don't know what happened after that.

Walter had some international meetings to attend and he had asked Ella
to attend them. He didn't want to go out of the country for a long
time, leaving Laura all alone. This whole week, he had been quite
upset because of his rude behavior towards Laura. He regretted saying
all of those harsh words to her. He knew that he had hurt her and he
wanted to apologize to her, but the whole week she had been at John's
house making him feel guilty. He knew he was going out of the city and
wanted to tell her sooner, but he knew she was extremely mad at him.
It was Thursday, so he was preparing to leave for the other city and
had already packed everything.
"Sir, are you going to leave without telling her?" it was hard for
Butler to ask this.

"I have no idea, you are the one who is responsible for taking care of
her. Nothing should happen to her. Take care of her and keep her
comfortable. I believe in you." He put his hands on Butler's shoulders
and encouraged him.

"Yes, I'll try my best," Butler pushed the luggage and placed it into the car.

Walter was ready to leave and was about to place the last bag into the
car when he saw Laura coming.

She looked pale and ill. It looked like she was completely ignoring
his presence. He could see her eyes running all over him because he
was dressed properly, like a gentleman.

She had asked butler about where Walter was going and Walter had a
hunch that she didn't like him leaving her alone. Walter finally
gathered the courage to speak to her.

"Everything you need is provided already and butler will be with you
so you won't be alone. I hope you will be okay and I'll be busy with
my meetings, so don't call me." He said as he picked up the last bag
and put it into the car. He was patiently waiting for her reply.

"Fine, I won't call you because I have other things to do instead of
calling you," she replied to him sarcastically and rushed to the main
entrance leaving him still and annoyed.

Walter slid into the car, leaving her by the door. He arrived at
Edmonton after about a 4-hour airplane ride. He was welcomed by the
other members of the company, was taken to a five-star hotel, and a
group of people from the media was there to try and get an interview
from him. Not willing to give any interview, Walter was quickly taken
to his room by the security guard. His mind was clouded by his
thoughts. He kept feeling that something might happen to her because
she was alone there. He took a cigarette and lit up without even
thinking about it. His mind couldn't think about anything aside from
her, and he felt that his mind had been stricken with memories of her.

All those moments he had spent with her were echoing throughout his
head. The moment he met her, that time he had spent with her at the
cancer society, and her carefree smile was all he could think about.
The time they got married, when John pushed her there and she was in
his arms. His little arguments with her and seeing into her eyes made
him relaxed and happy.

"Sir! Sir!" His secretary's voice was all over the room.

"Oh! Yeah?" Walter woke up from his thoughts.

"You'll be resting today because the meeting will be starting tomorrow
at 8:00 AM. You'll be free at evening and there will be a late night
party tomorrow. That's your daily schedule." She handed him a piece of
paper to sign.

"Fine," he sighed signing the paper.

"And yes, Sunday evening there will be a very important meeting that
you have to attend to, so prepare for it. Have a nice day," she smiled
at him, leaving him almost thoughtless.

The whole night, he could not sleep because he had nightmares. He went
for the meeting early in the morning. He wanted to call Laura just
once to hear her voice.

"What's wrong with me? Why am I thinking about her? Why? What is this?
Why is she always in my thoughts? The woman whom I hated the most and
never wanted to think about is now all over my mind and my nerves.
This is driving me nuts!" he was talking to himself almost sweating.

On Sunday morning, he went for a walk and tried to relax his disturbed
mind. He returned from the walk and got dressed for the meeting. This
meeting was important for his company's upcoming projects and other
deals.

He entered the building and was taken to the meeting room. He took a
deep breath and drank water. He still had a hunch that something bad
was going to happen to Laura.

"This project is being considered. What do you think about it, Mr.
Walter?" Mr. Chris asked Walter who was dreaming.

"Laura!" he stood up and rushed out of the room.

He ran out without saying another word and ran towards the exit.

"Sir! Wait, please! Is everything okay?" Isabelle came running trying
to catch up with him.

"Just call and ask to book an urgent flight to Toronto. I'll pay
anything, but I need you to take me there immediately."

Isabelle quickly called, and thankfully there was private plane
available at 5:00 PM. He put his hands on Isabelle's shoulders,
patting her on the back.

"Please take care of everything, there is an emergency and I have to
leave. Please take care of it." He immediately left for the airport.
He reached Toronto, hired a taxi, and without any delay, he was at his
home. The door was locked, and it looked like no one was home. He
wondered whether everything was okay. He quickly took out the keys,
unlocked the door, and ran out to the TV lounge.

"Butler! Laura!" he shouted, but the house was quiet. He proceeded
forward, looking for them.

Suddenly, he saw Laura lying unconscious on the floor with blood all
over her face. There was no one else home, and Walter was sure that
she had a mild injury on the head.

"Laura!!!!!!!" he screamed, running towards her as he saw her face
covered with small amounts of blood. Her body felt almost frozen. He
picked her up in his arms and carried her to the exit. He laid her in
the car and rushed the towards the nearest hospital.

He moved her to the stretcher and placed his hands over hers.

"Laura, nothing is going to happen to you. I won't let anything happen
to you, hang on." He was in tears and still pulling the stretcher.

"Sir, we are taking her to the ICU, please move," the nurse took her
to the ICU. He was in tears, and his heart was drowning with the fear
of something happening to Laura. He would never forgive himself if
something were to happen to her.

"Doctor, please, just save her no matter what it takes. Please,
nothing should happen to my Laura." Walter started to freak out.

"It's a mild injury, she is going to be fine. Obviously she is your
wife, she is under special treatment." Doctor patted Walter's
shoulder.

He could see her lying still in an unconscious state, with bandages
all over her head. He could see her through the small glass window.

"You can go inside and see her Mr. Walter, I think it was a mild
injury on her head, nothing serious. There are several tests we want
her to take, just to make sure everything is fine. We have shifted her
to the recovery room." the doctor explained to Walter, who was still
worried about her.

He went inside and look at her pale face and the hair all over her
head. Her pink lips shining as they had never done before.

He somehow contacted John to tell him about Laura's dreadful incident.

"What? I'll be there by tomorrow, please take care of her." John was
getting emotional and worried about her best friend.

"Yes, please tell Mrs. Jennifer as well," Walter was on the phone with John.

It was midnight and he was still awake. He just stayed there by her
side, like an angel.

"Laura, please forgive me for this, just once. I don't know how to say
this, but it won't ever happen again." He held her hands and gently
kissed them. The next morning, he woke up at 6:00 am to have a cup of
coffee, then he returned to the room she was in.

He was still holding her soft, beautiful hands tightly. Slowly, she
moved her head and tried to open her eyes. He quickly dropped her
hands and stood just in front of her. She slowly managed to open her
eyes and she tried to move towards the other side. Walter was happy to
see her waking up again and that she was okay.

XXX

I don't know what happened to me after I fell from stairs, but I could
feel my aching body and a bandage on my head. A person was standing in
front of me smiling continuously. I knew it was Walter just standing
in front of me. I had no idea how he got here or what was he doing
here. I somehow managed to get up, but my body was too weak to support
its own weight. Walter put his arms around my back to help me get up.

I pushed his hands back because I still didn't want him to touch me.

"I can do it by myself. Don't touch me!" I said in a low tone because
I was not even able to talk to him.

"You helped me too, that day," he smiled pouring a glass of water for
me. I didn't want to argue with a jerk like him, so I ignored him and
quickly drank the glass of water he gave me.

Doctors were here asking me a lot of questions and they were shocked
after learning that I was a doctor too.

"Then, Dr. Laura, it will be easy for you to take care of yourself as
you are a doctor yourself. How are you feeling, by the way?"

"Well, better than before. Still, my head is aching badly," I chuckled.

"Your husband is such a good person, he saved you today. He must
really love you because he was really worried about you." He smiled at
me and shook hands with Walter. I could see Water blushing and smiling
at them.

As they left, I laid down on the bed, quietly thinking about how
Walter could have saved me. I remembered that he was in another city
to attend a business meeting, but then what was he doing here?

"Are you an idiot Laura?" Walter was standing by the window in the
corner of the room.

"What?" I mumbled because I didn't want to have an argument at the moment.

''Why didn't you tell me that you were afraid of being alone? Aside
from having a fear of skating you are scared of being alone. You
should have at least told me, stupid." He crossed his arms in
disappointment.

"And you would have stopped if I had asked you to stay? Why are you
trying to be good? You are a jerk and I hate you for doing this to
me." I cried.
"Well-" he was interrupted by John who came running towards me. He
hugged me hard.

"Ouch! You are hurting me, John," I pushed him back looking at
Walter's expressions.

"I'll be back in two hours till then, John will stay with you," with
this he left.

"So, how are you feeling? How did this happen?" he was curious to know
about everything.

I explained to him what had happened and after that, I slept for a
while. Walter woke me up and offered me some soup.

"I don't want it," I was not willing to eat anything.

"It's good, just try it. Or do you want me to feed to you?" he winked
and sat on the chair.

"What? Em... No! I can eat it by myself." I tried not to laugh.

"Well, here we go," he fed me for the first time.

"It's delicious! Who made it?" I wanted to know.

"Butler, of course," he laughed.

I got discharged and the guys helped me walk until we got to the
parking area. We reached my home and I quickly put my arms around
John's shoulder for support while walking to the dining area.

"Shall I take you upstairs?" John asked me as I watched Walter stare at him.

"It's okay, John, I'll take her upstairs," Walter was getting more
gentle and polite. Something was fishy. Walter was simply smiling and
he even helped me eat some more soup. John said goodbye and left,
kissing on my cheeks. John was a really good friend of mine, a person
whom I had loved the most. Jennie was in Germany, but I was sure she
will quickly return after hearing the news.

"So, like a prince, shall I carry you upstairs?" he joked as he stared at me.

"It's okay, I'll go by myself," I tried harder to refuse his gestures.

He came towards me putting my arms around his shoulder and somehow I
was able to walk upstairs by leaning on him.

I opened my room, but he grabbed my hand and took me into his room.

"It's okay, I'll..." he interrupted me,

"Shhh! Just sleep on the bed quietly and you'll stay here till you get
better," he was acting so strange.

"What's with this sudden change?" I wanted him to tell me if he was
planning something.

"Laura, please forgive me. I know I don't even deserve that, but
still, just forget about it." I could see his eyes filled with sorrow
and pain.

WHAT!? Is Walter Scott asking for my forgiveness? Something is
definitely wrong. How did he save my life when he was in Edmonton?...
