CHAPTER THIRY SEVEN
(Walter; Third Person)
Hannah had shown Walter pictures related to someone whom he could never expect. At the moment, he was trying to hide his emotions. Swallowing hard, he stood slowly, containing his rage. He picked up the pictures and threw them at Hannah's face in a flurry of paper and ink.
"Do you think I'll believe shit like this?!" he shouted fiercely as if he wanted to kill her right then and there. Hatred seemed to rule over his mind. He didn't want to see the pictures and their lies anymore.
"How can you sit quiet like this when Laura's out there doing that? You need to..." Hannah tried to speak but before she could say another word Walter stood up and slammed his fist down on the desk so loud a resounding 'crack' was heard.
He shouted, "Leave! I wouldn't believe you and your damn pictures even if you made me see this shit a thousand times! Laura won't ever do what you're telling me she is!" He knew it was wrong, but in that moment all he wanted was to slap Hannah right across her face and wipe that little grin from her lips.
The grin faltered before fading completely. "But....fine," she said slowly with tears falling down her cheeks. She knew that Walter wouldn't believe it so easily but she couldn't forget her insult. She slowly moved towards the door, trying not to lose her temper.
'How can he be so sure? Does he really believe in her that much?' Hannah thought. She rushed out of the room as fast as she could and a big grin grew on her face as she walked away feeling contented. 'No worries. It won't matter in the end.'
Walter was pulling his hair in anger and agony. His expression looked like someone had stabbed a knife directly into his heart. But this was worse than stabbing. The adrenaline in his blood was starting to take its toll. Walter quickly turned to the window in his office, propped it open, and lit a cigarette.
He usually never liked smoking but he did whenever he was in extreme pain or discomfort. That's why he always kept an extra stash in the top drawer of his desk. He just wanted to calm himself. Leaning against the wall closest to the open window, Walter took a long drag. He held the burning smoke inside his lungs as long as he could. Parting his lips, he allowed the heavy smoke to escape while he twirled the cigarette between his forefinger and thumb. He fixated his gaze on the glowing red tip as he lost himself to thought.
"I won't believe it. Not until the day I see it for myself," he muttered, gazing out the window at the surrounding city buildings.
(Laura)
I was lying on my bed thinking about how much closer Walter and I had gotten over the past days. Suddenly I remembered an unpleasant event that had happened before that.
**Flashback***
It was Friday and I was in the radiology department, treating my last patient. I was tired so I went to my office to relax. I received a text from Daniel asking how I was doing. But at that same time I ran out of credit and forgot to text him back.
"Hey What're you doing?" John pinched my cheeks as he sometimes does.
Picking up my files and looking around, I answered, "Just packing my bag and stuff. I'm about to go home."
"I just got a text from Stefan and he wants to have dinner with us. He asked if you could join us." John said, raising his eyebrows and waiting for my reply.
I didn't want to have dinner I just wanted to go home and spend the rest of my day with Walter. But it was rude if I were to just say no because Stefan had always helped me out so it would be more polite for me to agree to the offer. "Sure, I'll come."
"Sounds great!" John patted my shoulder and gave me one of those weird smiles.
I tried to ignore the smile. "Do we have to wait for him to pick us up? Or will he join us at the restaurant?" I asked unwillingly.
"Of course he'll be waiting for us, now let's go!" He pulled my arms but I tried to stop for a moment.
"What about Jennie? Will she be there too?" I asked as John opened the door of the car for me.
"No, she is busy with her so-called 'Wife Responsibilities' so she won't be there," he shrugged as we both slid into the car. Jennie seemed busy these days and she wanted to spend more time with Paul. At least they seemed to be enjoying a perfect and happy life. As goes for John, I didn't know if he would ever find a woman because of the way he treated every woman so special. I doubted he'd ever truly settle down. Maybe if Ella showed some interest in him he could change himself, but that'd be near impossible.
"Hey Laura if you don't mind, can you give me Ella's number?" He chuckled, taking a sharp turn.
"Interested much?" I glanced at out of the car at the trees we passed.
"Well, maybe," he hesitated and blushed as he noticed my laughing.
"By the way, why does Stefan wants to have dinner with us? When will he return back to Germany?" I was now looking at a house which almost looked haunted and John turned on the car's music.
"I guess because he just wants to see you! I don't know how much longer he will stay here though." he said, looking at the signal which was green.
"Excuse me?! I'm already married! I mean, why doesn't he just get a life; like go back to his family and live there?" I crossed my arms in anger, pouting as I sighed. I didn't like the idea of going out without Walter because I just wanted him to be on my side.
"Just chill! I was kidding," John laughed as he quickly stop the car with a high break.
"Here we are," John said, getting out of the car. As we both looked over the place we couldn't find Stefan anywhere. I was trying to figure out if had ditched us and cancelled the plans.
"Oh, there he is! " John pointed out Stefan who was standing with a big cheerful smile on his face. I followed John and greeted him.
"Hello." I said in a low voice trying not to look at him. He was wearing a black three-piece suit with a grey tie and his muscular body showing through the tight fabric.
"Hello Laura! It's nice seeing you over here." He bowed and gently kissed my hands. I suddenly withdrew my hands from his. Stefan didn't like what I did but I just didn't like any other man touching me because for me it was being unfaithful to my husband.
John and Stefan started to talk about political affairs and football after that. Stefan was, as usual, in an enthusiastic mood and he wanted me to cheer up.
"So, what would you like?" he asked, handing over the menu. I carefully took it from him. John's phone rang at that moment and he had an emergency call form the hospital saying that they needed him right away.
"I can come with you!" I insisted to go but he said that he would take care of everything.
"It's okay! You both have a good time! Bye!" He left hurriedly and now only me and Stefan were left together. Alone together.
"Are you okay?" Stefan asked as he saw me sweating.
"Yeah," I murmured while looking down at the menu. We both decided what we wanted from the menu and then we both sat in silence, waiting for a waiter.
"What is your hobby?" he asked, finally breaking the tension filled silence.
"My job is my hobby I guess," I laughed. We both soon after engaged in conversation. Stefan had a very special kind of way of talking. Overall he wasn't a bad man and he usually praised my beauty every time we spoke.
"How many dates have you on been since you were a teenager?" he asked, laughing.
"Not a single one. I guess this is my first date," I laughed tensely.
"Then it's my first date too." He chuckled as we both exchanged gestures.
"Just kidding! I will call it a friendly dinner," I cleared it up and smiled. The dinner was served and we both started to eat. It was delicious Italian food and Mexican rice. A bit of the sauce dripped onto my cheeks but I continued to eat without caring.
"Laura." Stefan leaned across the table and smoothly wiped the sauce from my face with a napkin. I blushed as he touched me. I didn't like that but before I could speak a single word of protest, a voice from behind almost frightened me to death.
"Wow! So this is the way you cheat on your husband. Way to go Laura! I knew from the very first day that women like you are just trash. I guess I was right!" Hannah was standing behind us. My heart stopped beating for a whole minute. My eyes were wide and I couldn't breathe and I just wanted to punch her so bad.
"Why the hell are you here?" I growled, standing up from my place and glaring at her smug face.
"Shocked to see me? Poor Walter doesn't even know that his wife is cheating on him! Maybe it was more than that?" Before she could say more I slapped her, the sting shocking us both.
"Don't say a word! That's not the truth! Stefan is just my friend and that's it. And who are you to me? I don't have to give any explanation to a cow like you!" I lurched towards her but Stefan held me tightly with his arms wrapped around my shoulders.
"Excuse me, it'd be best if you leave," Stefan said but Hannah seemed to be to desperate.
"I am Hannah, Walter's ex-fiance and his lover Mr. Whatever-Your-Name-Is!" With that she left, leaving me in complete astonishment.
"Its okay, you should relax now." Stefan tried to console me but I was too agitated. I quickly got out of that place and sat in the car with Stefan.
"Are you feeling better? I'm sorry, because of me you got into trouble." said Stefan.
"No it's not your fault. Hannah's a psycho and....I really don't want to talk about it," I said.
"Okay," he replied. The whole way home we remained silent and as I reached home I quickly thanked him and rushed to my bedroom as fast as I could.
***End Of Flashback***
I was out of breath just thinking about what had happened but I didn't care because I knew Hannah couldn't possibly do anything. It was evening and I was preparing some cookies for Daniel. I decided to visit him that week and Mr. Wilson as well because it had been a while since we last met.
I was finishing baking them and putting them into the oven when I saw Walter staring at me while leaning against the wall. With his arms crossed, he wasn't looking in a good mood but I was concentrating more on my cookies.
Now ignoring my presence, he went over to the fridge and grabbed a soda without looking at me.
"What are you making?" he asked, unpleasantly opening the can of soda.
I closed the oven then turned to him. "Oh, this? These are cookies for Daniel. I wanted to visit him and his mother today so I made chocolate cookies for him since they're his favorite." After a couple of minutes I checked to see if they were ready or not.
He turned his head towards me only slightly with an annoyed look plastering his face.
"You never made any for me," he pouted. I quickly took out the tray of cookies from the oven and placed them on the table to cool.
"Well, that's because you only like things made by the butler." I replied sarcastically, carefully stacking the cooled cookies in the box. He didn't like my reply and got up, leaving me.
***
"Laura! What a pleasant surprise!" Daniel opened the door, smiling brightly.
"Here," I said, handing over a box full of still warm cookies.
"Cookies?" he asked, opening the box and peeking inside.
"Yes, but not all of them are for you, some are for Mr.Wilson so don't you dare eat his share."
"I'll try to contain myself. Come in."
"I'm not here to talk today. We can talk some other day, I'm in a hurry." I replied, smiling.
His smile darkened for only a moment. "Fine. Wait, I have something for you and your friends. Trust me, it's amazing!" He asked me to wait for him inside. He returned in a minute carrying something in his hands.
"Here you go." He handed over so many tickets my hands were overflowing. Looking closer, I saw that they were for some kind of competition.
"What is it?" I asked, furrowing my eyebrows not sure what exactly this was about.
"These are tickets for the Annual Boat Racing competition. Don't miss it! It's amazing as hell!" he remarked as I was reading the description carefully.
"But what am I going to do with all of these? They are for young people and I don't like things like that and neither does Walter." I passed the tickets back.
"No! It's for everyone and it's literally amazing! Trust me this is the best thing happening in Toronto and I know it sounds crazy but come on! You can take Walter with you and you guys can be even closer," he chuckled, laughing loudly as I saw that one race was a two people boat race and it was a very big event.
"We'll see about this...." I wasn't sure if I was going to ask Walter about this silly event.
"By the way, Laura, thanks for the cookies." Daniel placed a hand on my shoulder.
"No big deal," I muttered and left his house as fast as I could. As I reached home I found Walter laying on the couch sleeping and his eyes looked as if he had a bad dream. They twitched and flitted. I bit my lips and slowly placed my hands on his face. I pushed his hair back with my fingers and tangled them up. He quickly opened his eyes and stared up at me, giving me a confused look.
"I...I was just..." I tried to speak but I couldn't.
"I don't care!" He groaned, pushing my hands away and went upstairs without saying another word. He was acting a bit strange these days. It looked like he was mad at me but I didn't know what I'd done wrong.
The next day I gave all the competition tickets to Jennie, John, and our other fellow doctors.
"This so cool! I am so good at this! Thanks Laura!" John hugged me so hard I couldn't breathe.
"Laura! This is going to be great!" Jennie said as she hugged me too.
"You're welcome guys," I said, taking a sip of coffee. "Give one to Stefan as well."
"He's the best rider and all you guys are going to lose." Jennie seemed so confident about it.
"He can't be any better than me," John shrugged, laughing.
"Self obsessed!" I declared teasingly.
"I'll ask Ella to by my partner," John smirked.
I spat coffee back into my cup, coughing. "What?" I was shocked.
"You heard me. Ella's going to be my partner for the race."
"No! She won't!"
"Yes, she will."
"No!"
"Guys! Wait, Ella? John are you dating Ella? Walter's sister? Laura?" Jennie seemed so confused.
"Just in his dreams." I frowned.
"Okay guys, I better go. See you soon!" I said leaving them. I wanted to ask Walter but I knew he wouldn't ever agree because he never liked those kinds of things. I had no idea how to ask but at breakfast somehow I managed to ask him.
"Walter? Do you like boating?" I asked while pouring the tea.
"Boating? No it's terrible!" He continued reading the newspaper.
"Why?" I argued.
"I just don't like it."
"There is an annual competition and I want you to come. I mean it will be fun and everyone from the hospital is going and I know that we have a good shot at winning." I tried to convince him.
"What? Are you kidding me? I don't like any of that silly stuff!"
"But it will be fun! Why do you always have to say no to me?" I said in a low, hurt tone.
"Do you think we are still teenage kids? I have no interest in these childish activities. Sorry." he snapped back rudely.
"Everyone is so excited about it. John, Jennie, Paul, Daniel, and even Stefan, they are all going to be there but you... Fine!" I was not willing to plead with him any longer. I could notice his changing expressions and he didn't like something. He quickly left in anger and I just wanted to throw my scalding whole tea on his face.
***
It was the first Sunday of November and I was preparing for the boating competition. Walter wasn't home and I knew that it would be of no use to call him so I decided to leave by myself.
The competition was being held at the furthest edge of the city where the Blackwater Park Lake was at it's widest. In fact, the competition was going to start right where the lake headed towards the horizon in a scribbled line. There were arrangements set up separately for participants and spectators.
There were metal bleachers standing on either side of the docks where a slue of boats were lined, waiting to be pushed off into the lake. A red tent was set up directly in front of the dock. There, people drank warm coffee and got ready for the races. Some of the participants wore laminated numbers pinned to their backs. They mostly milled around the boats, laughing and talking with ease.
Making my way over to the bleachers, I found my seat near Jennie and John who were enthusiastically waving me over. I was just there to watch them all participating.
"Hey guys!"
"Hey! Where's Walter?" asked John looking at me.
"I don't know." I sat down quietly. John noticed my sad face but he didn't ask for elaboration because this wasn't a new occurrence.
"Stefan and the other participants paired up. There was an odd number though since a couple people didn't show up. Thankfully, there was a helping partner so they're all ready now." Jennie explained as Daniel and the others walked up.
"Laura would you like to be my helping partner?" Daniel asked, patting my shoulder.
"No, I'll just be supporting you guys." I laughed.
John and Jennie looked to Daniel seeing my face because they never knew about him.
"Oh this is Daniel my neighbor and friend. He brought me those tickets." I said, introducing him.
"Nice to meet you Daniel," said John as he shook hands with him.
"Hello Daniel!" said Jennie. After that it was time for the competition to start and I saw Ella coming for us.
"Hey guys! Daniel!" Ella hugged him and gently kissed his forehead.
"Miss Ella!" Daniel and Ella had apparently known each other for a very long time.
"Nice seeing you after such a long time." She smiled happily. John was blushing and staring at Ella. I was kicking him trying to make him control himself.
"Don't do anything stupid and make sure you win!" I whispered.
"Don't worry about that." He winked.
"Good luck!" I wished all of them as the competition was about to start. The boats were ready and each participant had been given a row and its partner as well. I was there to see them and I didn't know who to applaud.
I was at the end of the bleacher so I couldn't see the race very clearly but I could see a familiar face. I could recognize it! He was Walter and he was talking to some woman I didn't know but I knew it was Walter talking to her.
'Walter! But why are you here?' I asked myself. The competition was about to start. I was waiting for Walter to come over but he went with a woman and I could hear the commentator speaking.
"Here it starts!" he said.
I could see John and Ella perfectly going and the other boats weren't clear enough. I was biting my lips nervously and the noise of the crowd was too loud to hear anything. The first round was over and I stood up and ran towards the boundary, looking for my friends.
"We made it to the next round!" John said placing his hands on my shoulders.
"What?! Yes!"
"Credit goes to Ella," he said, looking towards her.
Stefan and John's teams were the only ones who made it and Jennie and Daniel didn't.
"Laura! Walter is here but why didn't you help him?" Ella asked me as if I knew what was going on his mind. My only response to her was a cold shrug.
There was a fifteen minutes break and we had to wait for the next round to begin. I was still lost in my thoughts not concentrating on what was going on. I was entirely lost to my thoughts and confusion.
"Don't search for me over there," a voice said from behind.
I looked around and saw Walter standing at my back. I didn't reply, choosing to ignore him and started to look at my phone.
"Did you wait for me?" He walked to stand in front of me and looked down into my eyes. I didn't reply back but Jennie interrupted us.
"Walter, I thought you weren't coming."
"How could I not? Laura had asked me so many times and I could never fathom saying no to her." he mumbled as I stared at him. They all greeted him and I decided to excuse them, making my way to the other side of the dock. My heart was aching but I tried to look at the calm lake.
"How many times do I have to tell you not to open your mouth like this." he whispered to me but I moved away.
"Why are you here?" I asked coldly.
"You wanted me to come, didn't you?"
"I did but once you refused then what's the point?" I said, looking away.
"I wanted to surprise you!" He was beginning to lose his temper.
"Surprise me with that woman you went with?" I couldn't contain my jealousy.
"Oh! She was Dr. Sarah and she asked me if she could help me so I decided to take her for the first round." he explained.
"Seriously?! Walter I can never get you! You have such a split personality!" I didn't want to say this but it slipped out of my mouth.
"Maybe, I never knew that you hated surprises so much. I'm sorry." he said. I couldn't say anything but remain silent.
"Second round is about to start fellows! Better get ready!" I could hear the commentator say over the announcement systems.
"You should go," I said.
"Without you? I don't want to lose." Walter's laugh brought a smile to my lips.
"I will only agree on one condition," I said, folding my arms.
"You and your conditions. What condition?"
"You have to go on a real date with me if we win." I said with a smirk
"Date? Well that's totally fine! Deal!" He grabbed my hand and led me to the participant area.
"We're so going to win!" said John, cheering. We both laughed and I couldn't stop blushing.
The race started and somehow we both were able to finish at the second number and made it to the final round along with Stefan and John again.
"This is all mine," John's confidence was near comical. I chuckled.
"Never knew Walter would be here," Ella said, smiling.
"Well I just wanted to have some relaxation." Walter responded.
"Third round is about to start and this is the last round fellas! Let's see who wins the trophy!" I could barely hear the sound over the blaring ringing in my ears.
I was nervous and scared but I wanted to win at any cost. The race started and it looked like that we are about to lose.
"Harder, Laura!" exclaimed Walter as we both tried to reach our destiny. Finally we were head to head with John's boat but I didn't care if it was him. The end point was just a few meters away and yes we were about to win and I couldn't believe it. We made it and I was so happy. The crowd cheered and I couldn't help but smile. Walter looked at me and I looked back. I didn't how to feel but I hugged him. In front of everyone, I hugged him, burying my face in his chest.
"Wow! You guys were awesome!" Daniel ran towards us, hollering loudly.
"Thanks!"
"Congratulations!" Jennie said as I saw everyone looking at us.
"Walter, you were fantastic!" Stefan declared.
"Well it would never have been possible without Laura." He laced his hands on my shoulder.
"Well then you should give her a gift. Like a kiss, yes, a kiss!" Daniel chuckled as they all began to laugh.
"Come on, Walter!" John urged as everyone noticed him blush.
"Daniel! Stop it! Let's go home," I said as we walked towards the parking area.
"Well if I was you, Walter, I would have kissed such a beautiful woman thousands of times." Stefan said to him. I could see his face going red in anger and agitation.
"Laura!" Walter snapped my name and quickly grabbed my arms and looked deep into my eyes. He bowed his head and placed a light kiss to my forehead.
'Wait...he....he just kissed me! But..' I couldn't believe it.
