CHAPTER THIRTY THREE

Walter was definitely not pleased in having lunch with Hannah but he was stuck. Hannah clung to his arms tightly, a smile on her face as they proceeded to have lunch in a restaurant where they used to go.

"I am so glad that we have this chance to chat, it's been too long." She wouldn't let go of him.

"Yeah, I am so excited." He said with a roll of his eyes, "Let's go." Walter opened the car door for her as they both slid in the car.

"So, how is life?" Asked Hannah in a cheerful voice.

"It's fine," Walter avoided her presence as he was trying to get rid of this bitch.

In a sarcastic tone she asked, "Just fine? I thought it would be fantastic since you married someone you love so dearly!"

"You know what, life is fine and I don't give a damn shit about explaining it to you, Miss Hannah," Walter snorted as she was getting on his nerves. They reached the restaurant and Hannah placed her arms tightly around his once more, looking up at his face as if they were a real couple.

"Don't look at me like that," Walter tried to push her away. Damnit, couldn't she just let go?!

"But I like it." Her lips moved towards him as they walked in. Walter quickly grabbed a chair for her and practically shoved her down into it. He settled down into his own, resisting the urge to bolt.

"What would you like?" Walter asked, a bitter bite to his tone as he watched Hannah looking at the menu.

"Anything that you like," she replied softly, her lips shifting into a sly smirk.

"No! I am serious, woman, what would you like?" Walter tried to cool his temper, but she was a complete nuisance.

She leaned forward a bit, her hands folding atop the table, "I said; I would like anything that you prefer." She felt the undying urge to eat whatever Walter ate.

"And if I say I would prefer a cup of poison, would you gladly drink? Maybe a side of kill me now?" Walter laughed darkly, contemplating how much a little bottle of poison would actually cost. He shrugged to himself; he'd have to look it up later.

"I would drink it because that's what Romeo did." She said in a low, silky voice.

"We aren't playing Shakespeare here." He called the waiter over so they could order. Once the waiter left, Walter added, "And what's with the gender swap? Do I look like you're Juliet?!"

She sighed, looking at his blank face. "You have changed a lot, Walter."

"Like? I am the same hot guy. So what change have you found?" Walter furrowed his eyebrows, examining himself in a nearby reflection.

"Well, like now you smile and talk a lot more and you are acting a bit less cold. You don't work late hours and...that's all." Hannah giggled, noticing Walter's changing expressions.

"Really? Maybe you are noticing too much," Walter said and poured a glass of wine for himself. He wished it were the strong stuff. Maybe he'd get lucky and pass out if it were.

"I've known you since childhood. We know each other more than anyone else ever could. Don't forget your ex fiancé remembers everything about you." She winked at him as Walter passed a fatigued smile.

"My ex fiancé is also my best friend, I prefer it that way." Walter said as they both laughed lightly.

The lunch was served and they both ate in silence. Walter wanted to get rid of Hannah as quickly as possible.

"Walter, guess what?" Hannah seemed excited about something.

"What is it?" He was only slightly desperate to know.

"Well, I have been promoted, and yes, Ella did it! Now my office will be in the building next to your's. Still far but I guess we will be meeting more often." She smiled. Walter suddenly choked on his food and spluttered as he heard the news.

"Oh my gosh! Are you okay?!" She gave him a glass of water.

"Yeah...good to hear that but why wasn't I made aware? I am supposed to have the last say in those matters."

"Seriously? Of course! I know you are definitely going to approve anyways, since I have worked so hard." She chuckled and stared wantonly at his face.

"Yeah, definitely." Walter stood up as they left for the office. Hannah kept speaking about their school days and about their college life. As for Walter, he couldn't have been less interested in listening to her rambling.

XXX

As it was Sunday, we all had a dinner together; me, Jennie, and Paul. Sundays were great and a blessed day for a doctor as it was and is the only day I can relax and have some time with my family.

"This pasta and spaghetti is delicious Jennie!" I ate hungrily and couldn't stop because I was tired of eating frozen things or dinner made by good ole Frank the butler. He was, no doubt, a good cook but Jennie, she had a perfect taste.

"So, Laura darling, how is your life? How is Walter? Everything fine?" Paul asked as I was finishing my second plate of dinner.

"Yeah! It's good and Walter is fine." I mumbled as we talked about life.

"So are we going to have nephews then?" Paul laughed and Jennie and I were going all red. My cheeks were so hot with embarrassment.

"Paul! You dumbass! Stop asking such embarrassing questions! Sorry Laura, he is a little blunt," chuckled Jennie as I tried not to speak, knowing that my voice would be reverted to squeaking. Walter never even kissed me and they were talking about... 'This is shit!' I thought.

"Let's plan family dinner together, it will be fun, right? Walter should come too!" Paul grinned, patting my shoulder.

"Yeah, maybe next week?" I asked, looking to Jennie who was busy washing dishes.

"It sounds fun! Paul you are getting smarter," Jennie laughed drying her hands.

"I am smart enough Miss." as he laughed punching on my shoulders.

"Oh please, I've rubbed off on you! You were nothing but an empty skull idiot before we met!"
Paul shrugged, "Just remember that you fell in love with that idiot!"
Jennie ignored him and turned to me, "Anyways, Laura it's late you should be going. Walter must be worried about you." She said as I picked up my bag from the floor. I hugged Jennie and Paul and called for a cab as my personal driver was not available. As I was on the main street the cab wheel got punctured and I was pissed.

"I am sorry to say, but I guess you have to walk back as the car won't be working any time soon." The driver said as I got out of the car in anger.

"Dammit!" I slammed the door, walking down the street quietly. The street was quite and there were no people walking as it was late. I kept walking in a fast speed to reach the house as fast as I could manage. My heart was pounding and I was getting scared because I didn't like walking alone.

A hand on my shoulder made me whirl around and shout but it was no other than Daniel.

"Oh! You almost scared me to death!" I groaned as I saw a big grin on his face. He was wearing that cap of his and chewing gum in his mouth.

"Sorry! Didn't mean to scare you," he said pulling the headphones off his ears.

"But you just did!" I exclaimed walking ahead and leaving him behind.

"Sorry milady! My apologies!" He smirked, still staring at me.

"It's okay! Are you going to walk me home?" I laughed.

"I don't mind it! Do you want to have coffee with me?" he asked as we both were walking.

"At the little coffee shop in town?"

"No! My mom makes a perfect coffee! Let's go!" He held my hands tightly.

"Okay! But..." I tried to speak but he cut me off and I was practically dragged to his house.

"Here we are!" He declared, pointing to the beautiful house that left me astonished. It was so beautiful and luxurious even from the outside. Not as good as Walter's, but definitely lovely.

"Come on in!" He pulled me in after him.

"Your house, it's beautiful," I said, looking at the house, amazed.

"Well, thanks, it's not better than Walter's though." We both giggled. As we entered the big dinning hall I was still exploring the house and the big dining table in the middle.

"Dany! Are you home? You always make me so worried!" I heard someone calling out as they came down the stairs. The woman was young; in her thirties. She was tall, brunette, with a tanned complexion and her accent sounded American.

"I am back, happy now?" Daniel said loudly without looking at her.

"Hello! I didn't recognize you. Are you my boy's little friend?" She said, coming towards me with a big smile on her face.

"Oh! I am actually..." I tried to say, but Daniel spoke,

"She is my girlfriend, Mom! Any problem? And you are not supposed to ask something like that to my friends." Daniel spoke rudely as I hesitated to speak.

"Sorry dear, I didn't mean to..." she tried to speak but I interrupted,

"No! Its okay, I am Daniel's friend actually he is just saying that." I smiled, trying to control my anger. She didn't speak rather she looked quite confused.

"Mom! I am kidding she is just my friend. Walter's wife," Daniel said as I simply smiled.

"Oh, Walter's wife! Glad to meet you! I didn't know! He didn't tell Wilson or I would have known." She kissed me gently on my forehead.

"Now you know! Better! Let's go upstairs, Laura." He ignored his mother and I followed him as he bound up the staircase. We sat on a small sofa and I looked around at the big sitting lounge.

"I will ask my mom to make coffee for us." he said.

"Okay," I said hesitantly. As he told his mom to make coffee for us, I felt quite uneasy but I tried to hide it.

"Can I ask you something?" I asked once his mother had left.

He smiled. "Sure, go ahead."

"Why do you act so cold to your mother? I mean, you should be nice to her!" I spoke in a quiet tone in case his mother was eavesdropping.

Daniel's face contorted, "Because....wait, you don't need to know that!"

"But still..."

After a couple of moments of silence he blurted out, "Because she deserves it! She is not my mom!" He was on the verge of tears.

"Oh! Is she your stepmother?" It was hard for me to ask.

"Yes."

"But she is nice, you shouldn't act like this. Stepmom or not!" I explained to him. He was quite and I could see a burning hatred in his eyes.

"You don't have to worry about it! So how is your life, Lee?" he asked and winked.

"Well it's perfect." I chuckled.

"You wanted to tell me about Walter? Can you? How do you people know his family?" I asked desperately.

"I can see how desperate you are!" He laughed

"I am just... Fine, it's okay if you don't want to." I made a pouting face.

"Okay, then let's start," he said, seeing that I genuinely wanted to listen.

" Walter's father and my father were close friends. Mr.James was my father's best friend and they were neighbors as well. Mr. James was a billionaire and his wife was a beautiful and loyal woman. After Walter's birth, his father was found to been having an illegal relation with a woman in London. I don't know exactly what happened but Mr. Walter divorced his first wife and I think she took Ella with her.
Walter's father left Toronto and handed Walter over to my father and family friend Mrs. Joseph. Mrs.Joseph was also our neighbor but she never intended to take care of the poor child.
My father and mother took care of him instead. I wasn't born then and my parents loved Walter as their own child. After I was born and my mom died, my father married another woman. After that, Walter became distant though he loved my father and he still does, but he became lonely.
I've never liked my stepmom because I hate her for replacing my mother and she doesn't even deserve to be called Mom. Anyways, Walter and I were in the same high school. As a child, he was the only one who protected and loved me. I loved him as my brother and I knew that, in spite of how rude he acted, he was a different person. In his last year of high school he fought with two bullies of my school just for my sake. He got injured but I knew he would always protect me.
After his father's death he just went away and left the old neighborhood and begin to live in the house which he bought in a different area. He was far away from everyone and we decided to go there where he lived as per my father's decision but after that incident, Walter sealed his heart and told everyone to stay away from him except for my father. I tried to contact him but even now he avoids me and I don't know why.
If my father comes back I know he will still share things with him because he consider him as his real father. That's all I hope this helped, Daniel stopped."

After listening to this whole awful, painful, and downright pathetic past of Walter's, I was silent for a moment. I really felt sad for him. "I feel bad for him," I sighed.

"Me too." said Daniel.

Something in my heart was aching and I was in tears. I just wiped them as my phone started to ring. "Hello?" I asked, fishing the phone out of my pocket.

"Laura!!! Where the hell are you? Will you just stop doing this? I got..." he busted out like a volcano and I interrupted him.

"Walter! I am at Daniel's house and I am just coming!" I said.

"What? Fine! Do whatever you want!" With that, he ended the call.
I sighed and turned to Daniel, standing up. "Hey I have to leave now! Thanks for the coffee and that story you told me!"

"That's not a problem Laura, I am always ready to help you," he bowed and kissed each of my hands.

"Would you like to visit me someday? It's fun talking to you." I laughed.

"Finally the girl fell for me! I am feeling like a prince now!" he chuckled and I laughed both with and at him.

"Sorry, this girl is already in love with some other guy. You are late, Mr. Playboy." I laughed loudly.

"My bad then, by the way, I liked my nickname." He smirked.

"Better than Lee, I mean, you couldn't come up with a better nickname?"

"Totally! Don't tell me you are falling for me?" he was in his flirting mood again.

And I was not. "Shut up!" I punched his shoulder and quickly went downstairs.

"Are you okay going all by yourself?"

"Yes! Bye!"
I walked home as fast as I could. I pushed past the door and threw my coat on the sofa and looked around and saw Walter opening the fridge.

"Hey look, I just wanted to.." Before I could say a word he lifted his hand, folding his index finger and knocking it against my forehead.

"Hey, that hurts!" I protested but I secretly loved it when he did that to me.

"You guys are getting along," he said.

"Jealous much?" I laughed as he walked away.

"Never in million years! I just had to wait because the door had to be locked and next time make sure this doesn't happen." With these words he walked away.

"Whatever!" I was suddenly pissed off and tired.

He came back again and moved towards me. He was staring me intensely and I was getting nervous. He was near me and we were close enough to feel each other's breaths. I was trembling and my heart was racing like a wild horse.

"Do.. Do you need something?" I murmured as I tried to move away. His eyes were staring into mine and I didn't know what he was trying to do. He twisted the loose strands of hair lying on my forehead and pulled them back.

"I don't like seeing someones hair on their forehead! It just pissed me off. Yes I would like a cup of coffee." He grinned as I was blushing and I tried to control myself.

"Yeah! I just got a haircut last week and yeah sure," I replied, touching my hair and feeling uneasy. I quickly went into the kitchen and prepared the coffee. He was standing there and I wasn't feeling right in the head. Too much fluttering in my stomach, too.

"Why don't you sit down? I'll make it in a minute." I said, not looking at him.

"I am tired of sitting." He grinned.

"Okay, as you like," I said, trying to find the instant coffee container. I couldn't even find the fresh ground coffee beans! I thought that's all rich people drank!

"Where the hell is it!?!?" I shouted, searching for it everywhere.

"What?"

"Got it!" I tried to grab the jar from the shelf but my hands weren't quite reaching so I tried to jump. I tried but it was a bit out of my reach still. Walter placed his hands on my back and picked me up with ease. I was surprised, especially because of how firm a grasp he had on my hips. I quickly snatched up the jar, blushing a brighter red. Walter quickly went to the dining hall and I was left shaking.
Once the coffee finished, I poured into his mug and stirred it, setting it in front of Walter.

"Thanks," he said, taking a sip of coffee. I simply smiled and walked upstairs.

Just when I thought I was clear from insult, I heard him shout up, "Well, it seems you are still immature!"
I groaned, rolling my eyes. "He is such a jerk and....and an idiot too!" I blushed softly, realizing just how childish both of those words were too.
