CHAPTER THIRTY ONE

This ring in the picture <3

Walter looked down into my eyes. "Maybe you wanted be here with me, or maybe you wanted to sleep with me?" He smirked, still holding my face tightly. My face was burning red when I noticed he was shirtless. Again. What is it with this guy and taking his shirt off?! He usually doesn't sleep with his shirt on, I guess. Nonetheless, I was feeling so awkward with his muscular body as close as it was to my smaller form.

"Just shut up, you idiot! Y-you jerk! I-"

He placed two fingers across my lips to keep me from adding more. "Ssh...I know." He whispered a bit too softly. I was becoming quite frightened by then, unsure of what he was trying to do. In my fear, I tried to free myself from his grasp and pushed him back with all my power.

"Your sister is here and she wants to sleep in my room! She is sleeping there and that's the only reason I am here! Do you understand?!" I groaned, resisting the want to slap his smug face.

"Because of Ella? Are you sure?" He chuckled. Apparently it was a funny situation to him.

"Look, Mr. Ice Man! I have no interest in sleeping with you or coming into your room! Just because Ella requested to sleep in MY room and if only I had to show her that we aren't living separately, I had to come here!" I blurted out in blind rage and annoyance.

"Ice Man? Is that my new pet name?" He grinned and I could see him holding back laughter.

"No! You know what, I don't even care! Think whatever you want! Just remember I hate you! You are a cruel and heartless jerk! I regret ever marrying you! You mean so-" I would have continued but Walter released me and jumped onto his bed, sprawling out his body.

"See, I am tired and I want to get some sleep. Besides, don't you ever think that I am going to let you sleep on the bed with me because I really don't like sharing my things." Wow! A true toddler. He covered himself in a blanket and closed his eyes. My mouth dropped as I saw how selfish he was being.

"Go to hell! F*** you!" I mumbled as I walked to a small sofa near the window. I curled up on top it, well that's my bed for night. Tears began to fall from my eyes as my heart bled in sorrow and pain. I closed my eyes and tried to sleep through the knife in my chest.

***

My eyes opened when I heard my phone ringing. I was still tired from last night's party and so I just wanted to sleep more. Thankfully it was Sunday so I didn't have to work. I shifted in the little sofa and reached for the phone lying on the floor, but my hands were awkwardly numb and my exhaustion wasn't helping.

"Who the hell is calling now?" I muttered to myself, finally managing to pickup the phone. "Hello! Who is this?" I asked, trying to stifle my yawning as I got up from the sofa and looked to the clock.

"It's me, madam, from the Cancer Society. We want you here today, it's urgent. Please be here by 8:00 am." The guy from the cancer society explained, but I was still planning to go back to sleep after.

"What's so urgent?" I didn't want to go.

"We will tell you when you arrive, Ma'am." With that the call ended. Wow! I have no life....like, seriously!

I got up from the sofa and saw Walter still sleeping comfortably in his big ole bed. I could have easily fit there last night. My legs were all stiff and I was feeling extremely agitated just watching Walter sleep. Why did he have to look so peaceful? I walked towards the washroom which was, of course. Like something from a fairy tale. It looked like a dream palace! So big and wonderful and with everything sparkling just as brightly as a diamond. Everything was modernized and yet it still looked like I had stepped into a different world's washroom!

I quickly took a warm shower and dressed up myself and tied up my hair. As I was combing my hair, I saw Walter get up from the bed, rubbing his eyes.

"What's with all the noise? Sheesh, I'm trying to sleep over here!" He grumbled in that groggy voice. I chose to ignore his presence entirely. He got up from the bed and sat on the sofa I had slept on, watching me with a questioning face. "Isn't it Sunday?" He asked.

"Yes." I replied, picking up my bag from the table.

"Where are you going then?" He asked, seeming concerned. So now he chose to act like a real husband.

"It's none of your business!" I snapped, searching around for my phone. Crap, where did I put it after that morning call?

"What, I can't even know where you're going?" He snorted in false disappointment.

"No! I don't think so!" I glared as I passed by him, snatching my phone from the floor near his bare feet. He was glaring daggers through my skull. As if he was planning how to kill me. I gave him an unpleasant grimace of a smile, a wave of hatred and revenge boiling in my blood. Last night with the way he insulted me, I was the one who had reason to murder.

As I was about to leave the room, Walter reached out and grabbed my wrist, standing quick and shoving me to the sofa. "What?" I asked, managing to glare even as my heart skipped around my rib cage in fear.

"Happy Belated Birthday, my lovely wife." He said, a smile spreading across his face. I didn't respond, acting like I was ignoring what he said. "I know you are mad at me." He said in a low voice, kneeling beside the sofa. Oh, so now he is going to apologize. Isn't that just perfect?

"Can I leave now?" I asked irritably, attempting to control my temper.

"I didn't forget your birthday, I never forgot it, you know?" I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"You did?" I raised my eyebrows, curiosity bettering me.

"Yes, silly, I did. I knew that it was your birthday yesterday. I had planned everything for you a week before and I had made special arrangements as well. A special dinner at a special restaurant. I wanted to give you a surprise so I ignored the questions you asked yesterday. And you know what? I had also ordered a special chocolate fudge ice cream for you." He sighed, looking at me with a genuinely sad expression.

"You...you did all that....for me? You remembered my birthday? Then why didn't you take me there?" I asked him, frowning. There was a silence between us and I continued to look at him, waiting for his reply.

"How could I? Everything got jumbled up! My meeting went longer than I expected and just as I reached home I got disappointed to see that you already were enjoying the day with your friends! You could have waited for me but you didn't and you celebrated with them! So I cancelled our dinner plans since you apparently don't care!" His voice had begun to grow louder.

I quickly responded, the words tumbling from my mouth, "Walter, you could have told me that you arranged all that, and I would have waited for you for, but it was getting late and I had no choice other than to cut the cake without you! I wanted to celebrate with you! Why did you cancel our dinner?" I asked curiously.

"Because I thought you were enjoying being with your friends and that guy you were dancing with!" I could see a change in his voice as he mentioned the last part. Jealousy.

"It's not like that! I was just trying to have fun since you just ignored me!" I quarreled bravely.

"Stop! I didn't like it, alright!?" He shouted, interrogating me as if I were a criminal!

"Fine, I didn't like it either! But you should apologize for last night anyways!" I snapped, holding back a chuckle at his startled expression.

"Ummm, fine! I apologize, geesh, you're acting like I murdered someone." He grumbled, suppressing a chuckle of his own.

I opened my mouth to respond but the clock caught my eye and I sat up, "Oh! Its 7:25 I have to go!" I said, trying to stand from the sofa and leave.

Walter stopped me though, this time gently pushing me back down to the sofa, "Laura? Can you just close your eyes and wait here for a minute?" He asked, getting up.

"Why?" I asked, wondering what he was up to.

"Just close your eyes!" He ordered and I immediately did so.

"What are you up to?" I questioned warily. I was not comfortable being around him with my eyes closed....

I was waiting for him with my eyes closed nonetheless. I had no clue what the hell he was going to do. Maybe he was going to give me a breakfast surprise.

"Okay, open them." I slowly opened my eyes, looking up at him. He was holding a ring box with a beautiful sparkling ring in it. The ring was extremely beautiful and most likely expensive.

"Is it for me?" This was definitely a surprise

"No, it's for the girl next door, I wanted to see if you thought she'd like it." He chuckled.

I shook my head at him. "Wait...this ring..." I was trying to remember, I'd seen that ring somewhere else. I just couldn't remember where. Then it hit me and I proclaimed, "Walter! This is the same ring I loved when I was... oh, forget it! I really like this ring! Scratch that, I love it!" I laughed heartily, my eyes sparkling like the diamond mounted atop the ring's band.

"Really? You loved it? Did you see the exact ring somewhere else?" He waved his hand, "Never mind, I am just glad we have the same taste in rings." He smirked, watching me as stared at the ring. "Here, take it." He said, holding the little box out for me to take.

"You have no manners when it comes to presenting a gift!" I folded my arms across my chest in disappointment, refusing to take the ring.

"And you don't know how to receive one." With this, he took my left hand in his and slid the ring down my ring finger. I was blushing bright red at his gentleness and I couldn't meet his eyes.

"Happy?" He smiled, not releasing my hand quite yet.

"Well, yeah." I pulled my hand away from him and stood up, walking briskly towards the door, trying to hide the fact that my face was completely red. As I reached the door, I turned, "Thanks."

"You're welcome." He bowed dramatically, making me giggle. As he straightened back out I remembered to hand over the files that Isabelle had delivered.

"Hey, your secretary dropped off some files, I can't get them now though since Ella's in my room. Whenever she leaves please check them out. They're near the drawer. By the way, Isabelle said you left the meeting because of some emergency?" I forgot about having to be at the hospital and waited for Walter's response.

"I will see them later then. Wait, Isabelle said that? She must be talking about an office emergency. You don't need to worry about it, my office is fine." He smiled, trying to convince me, but I was doubting about that whole emergency thing.

"If you say so." I said unwillingly, turning and actually leaving then. "I am going to see the Cancer Society, it's urgent! See you later!" I took off down the stairs. I was getting nervous and excited at the same time. For the first time in my whole life I have been so happy and this was my first gift from Walter. It would forever be precious and valuable to me. I couldn't just get over the fact that he gave me a ring as my gift. The same ring I had seen yesterday at that shop. God is really helping me! I was happy as a chirping bird. There was something going on in my mind as I figured that Walter reacted so harsh and rude yesterday because he had to cancel our plans. I was just not sure if he was doing this on purpose or what. Was he trying to play with my mind?

XXXYesterday

It was August 31, Walter was thinking about Laura's birthday. He wanted to celebrate it somewhere special where they could have fun together. It was Sunday and he left early as to discuss some business matters with his office colleagues and asked about different party planners. He wanted to go home and talk to Laura, he felt quite comfortable around her. He had promised not to hurt her after that dreadful incident. He had even decided to plan a surprise dinner for her, at the Italian restaurant. Since she loved Italian food so much.

"Sir, we have planned the arrangements to the best of our capabilities." The worker told Walter.

"Timings are from 9-12 PM, okay? Everything should be flawless, got it?" Walter ordered, his stern gaze intimidating the younger man.

"Yes sir, we know that you are a big name in the world and we don't want to mess things up for you and your wife. Sir." The worker assured him.

"That's good, and yes, no media or paparazzi. I am damn sick of it. If this is not perfect, I will see to it that you are fired." He left without another word.

When he got home, he couldn't find Laura and began worrying. Maybe she had gone out on her own. Why would she want to do that? "Where is she? She should be home!" Walter asked the butler who was busy making dinner for him.

"She has gone somewhere with Miss Ella." The butler replied, setting plates out on the table.

"Ella?" Walter felt disgust rising in him at the sound of that name. "Fine." He glanced at the set table, "I will not be eating dinner." Going to the TV lounge, he started watching a football match.

'If she and Ella are going to be close there is going to be a problem. I do not want them both to end up being harmed.' Walter thought, wondering what would happen if Ella were to share all of his weak points with Laura. He didn't want Ella to get close to her for that reason.

As Laura entered the lounge, Walter glared at her with a fierce look. "Where were you?" He asked, making sure to cloak his desperation.

"I was with Ella!" She replied, unsure why Walter was being so baby about it.

"My sister? Well aren't you two getting along well! Seems you are really getting attached to that witch." Walter smirked. He left, going upstairs, each step in anger and rage, not sure that he hurt her again.

It was September 2 and Walter knew that he had to act as if he didn't remember her birthday or even he cared. He had planned everything and he didn't want to let her know now. He decided to follow her today to see what her plans were. He also decided to buy a ring for her as a birthday present from the famous shop 'Tiffany & Co.' Since the shop was on the way to the hospital, Walter went there after dropping off Laura.

"Is there something special happening today?" Laura asked as Walter read his newspaper, sipping coffee at the breakfast table.

"Special? There is nothing special about today." He tried to act like he'd forgotten so that he could ensure her surprise was an actual surprise.

As Laura left for the hospital, Walter followed her, and on his way he was shocked to see that Laura had stopped at the same shop he had decided to buy the ring from. As soon as she had gone, Walter decided to find out what she was doing in there. He quickly went into the shop and asked the worker, "Excuse me? Which ring did that woman, the one that just left, look at?"

"Sir! She liked this one but she said she'd buy it later. If I am correct, you are her boyfriend?" She was trying to get personal and Walter hated those kind of women.

"You don't have to know that. Just give me this ring." He handed her his credit card.

"Here you go sir, if I am not wrong you are Mr. Walter and you recently-" Before she could say one more word, Walter left and went to his office.

As he reached the office, he found that a meeting was set up at 7:00 PM and Walter wanted to change the timings but it was of no use.

"Sir, may I come in?" As Isabelle walked in and piled up files on his desk, she asked Walter about the meeting.

"Let's go together, Miss Isabelle." Walter stood from his chair and they walked out into the hall.

"Sir, yesterday I went to your home but you weren't there." She said.

"Yesterday? You were at my home?" Walter looked at her, almost scared.

"Yes and I had to hand over your files. The ones you left in Edmonton. So I handed them over to your wife." She frowned at Walter who seemed shocked and confused.

"Wait...you handed them over to Laura? Did you say anything about that meeting?" Walter managed to ask.

"Yeah, I said you left due to an emergency. I don't think she knows why you left, and neither do I." At Isabelle's inquiring glance, Walter dragged his palm down his face.

'Wow! Good job Miss Isabelle!" He muttered to himself.

"I think she loves you, more than anything." She smiled.

"How would you know that?" Walter arched an eyebrow.

"She thought I was your....never mind, I cleared it up." She giggled, holding up a hand over her mouth.

"Ha! She loves me? I don't know about that one, Isabelle." Walter shook his head.

"Let's discuss this more after the meeting." They entered the conference room just as the meeting began.

It was 9:00 and the meeting had yet to end. Walter was biting his nails, looking tense as all get out. He was worried and wanted to get out of there. But he couldn't since the discussion at hand was extremely important.

As the meeting came to an end, Walter rushed home, trying to send a text to Laura but cursing when he noticed there wasn't any credit left on his phone.

"Wow! Everything just keeps getting worse whenever I try to do something good!" He grumbled to himself, grinding his teeth together.

What he saw upon entering his home, was unbelievable. Laura was in the arms of a man he had seen at Jennie's wedding! Walter's temper sky rocketed and he was feeling so angry and disappointed in both Laura and himself. He just wanted to kill the man holding onto Laura. Walter's rage worsened when he saw that Laura had already celebrated her birthday without him.

Walter stormed upstairs rather than strangling anyone. He called the worker and cancelled the dinner plans he'd made, and went to sleep. It had cost him so much, but he decided to cancel since he didn't even want to see Laura, let alone celebrate with her!

As he was slept, a knock on the door woke him. Walter walked over and unlocked the door, looking down at Laura. "What are you doing in my..." Before he could say more, Laura pushed him back into the room and told him that she was there because Ella wanted to sleep in her room and she had no choice. Walter slept on the bed and asked Laura to sleep on the sofa. He felt no sympathy or urge to apologize. He wanted Laura to apologize to him first.

XXX

Reaching the Cancer Society, I spotted Mr. Alfred waiting for me at the entrance. "What's the matter? Is everything okay?" I asked, worried, wanting to know what the issue was. My driver drove off.

"We are here to manage the accounts and balance. At the moment, we lack the finances to afford any blood transfusions. Also, the donations we've received are not enough for to mange this society." He stated tersely.

"What? How did this happen?" I asked in a low voice.

"We do not know right now, but we need more donations this week, or else we've got quite the problem on our heads." There were bags under his dark eyes.

"Let's go and talk to our manager." I replied.

Big trouble was waiting for me if the society went bankrupt and into debt. I quickly called Jennie and John to resolve this problem and they both said to ask Walter to help.

"What, are you crazy?! Why would I ask him?! No!" I shouted into the phone, resisting the urge to just hang up.

"What's the big deal? He is a millionaire for crying out loud! Can't he help just a bit? At least enough to pay off our debt? As a husband can't he do that much?" Jennie questioned, her voice firm.

"I won't ask him, okay?! I don't even know why I bother asking you people for help!" I ended the call. Taking a deep breath to calm myself, I called Stefan and he said that he would be able to help us a little and Paul was ready to give a bit too. Me and other coworkers asked help from different companies and somehow we received enough money so that our debt could be paid.

"We need to advertise more and with that we need a person who can ask other people for help, so that we can improve our finance situation." Stated Dr. Sarah as we all sat and stood around, conjuring up ideas.

"How would we do that?" I asked, trying to come up with an answer to my own question, but it was hard to focus when my mind kept going back to the little children I helped treat. All I wanted was to save their lives; no matter what it took!

I decided to go visit them. "Hello my children!" I screamed and with that they all gathered around happily, reaching out for my hands.

"Where were you Miss Laura?" Asked a little girl.

"We missed you! " They all started whining, asking where I had been.

"Okay, okay! I am here for the day, just to play with you guys! For now you have to play with Mr. Raven in the playground so I can look at your histories." I smiled as they all headed off to start playing in the playground area.

I sat down at a desk and began to look through each of their files and history, smiling when I found that many of them had seen improvements in their health. David was faring well, not suffering from his lung cancer so much. June's leukemia was worsening day by day and needed frequent transfusions though.I made sure to check everyone's history and with Dr. Sarah's help, we finished earlier than expected.

"Seems like we need more money to buy all of the needed medicines and blood transfusions...." Sarah said quietly, her voice hopeless.

"We are going to do our best. Don't worry." I replied, noticing that it was almost evening.Tea was served and all the staff members discussed the financial situation. I was looking down at my new diamond ring. I was smiling to myself and I just couldn't stop smiling about what had happened this morning.

Walter had even planned a birthday party for me and I was just so stupid that I couldn't even notice it! No matter how cold he tried to act, no matter how harsh he was, I knew that he actually cared. Maybe he cared about me more than I think.

As I stood by the window, I could see the clear sky and the sun slowly disappearing beneath the horizon as evening came. I smiled and glanced at the children who were happily running around. Turning back to the clear sky, I saw then that lanterns filled it.

"What's going on?" asked Alfred, coming up to me and looking at the sky of lanterns.

"Alfred! Do you see that?! Those lanterns are all over the sky! Is there any celebration today? I love them!" I exclaimed, looking at the beautiful sky filled up with flying lanterns.

"I don't know, but...who did this?" Alfred asked, concerned.

Everyone stood up and started looking at the beautiful scene. I quickly ran outside and what I saw was so shocking I almost screamed. In joy, of course. Walter! Walter was handing these lanterns to the children and he was playing with them!

"Here you go, kid!" Walter said, handing a glowing lantern to a small boy.

I froze in my spot, shocked to see Walter doing that. "Walter!" I screamed. He turned to face me, smiling goofily.

"Hey Laura!" He handed another child a lantern and jogged over, his head tilting slightly at my blank expression.

"Dr. Laura! Thanks to your husband, the children have become the happiest we've seen them in weeks! His effort in bringing these lanterns and the donation he has given is truly amazing and we thank him!" Called Raven.

I was still confused, my eyes wide and my jaw hanging wide open.

"Hey, close your mouth or else a bee will fly in." Walter chuckled as I came to my senses. Everyone sat down on the ground to watch the lanterns. The staff were all walking over and thanking Walter, smiling at him as if he were an angel in all his glory.

"Thanks for the help! It was impossible without you!" Our manager thanked the idiotic man I called husband.

"It's not a problem, I am glad that I could help you all." Walter winked at me.

"Wait! What help?" I said, looking up to Walter's eyes.

"He has given us a large amount of donations and has told other companies to donate as well. Isn't is great Laura? You are really lucky to have such a kind and helpful husband."

"Yeah, I must be the luckiest girl in the world." I replied sarcastically, looking to Walter.

As soon as the children and staff's attention turned back to the lanterns, I grabbed Walter's muscular arms and pushed him to the side. "Hey! What do you think you are doing?" I whispered slowly.

"What?"

"Don't act as if you don't know!" I said, my tone turning frustrated.

"I just helped because I wanted to. I got a call from a worker here and he was asking for help, so here I am." He smirked, "Walter to the rescue!" He pushed me to the side now.

"Well, thanks!" I said, blushing only slightly.

"Don't thank me, I didn't do it for you." He chuckled.

"Yeah, whatever!" I said, turning back to look at the lanterns floating high in the sky.

"Miss Laura, he's back! I love him!" The little boy from earlier came running over and hugged my waist tight.

"Are you happy to see him?" I grinned at Walter.

"Yes! He bought us these beautiful lanterns!" He was holding one in his little hands.

"Let's light it together!" I took it from him and knelt down to be at his level. Together we thrust it up to join the others in the sky.

"Thank you, Mister Walter!" The little kid jumped on Walter, laughing and smiling.

"Why don't you go keep playing, I'll be there in a minute." The little boy nodded and scampered off. I could see how much they all loved Walter and somehow Walter loved kids too.

"They are adorable." I said watching them play, smiles lighting up each of their faces. They have never been so happy in their entire lives. Those lanterns were the best gift they could ever get.

"You like them?" Walter asked, looking to the sky.

"Lanterns? I always loved them! They are the things I always wanted in my childhood." I sighed.

"This is your real birthday present." He was still looking at the sky so full of light.

"For me? I loved it! Thanks! You did a lot for us, it must have cost a l-" Walter lifted his hand, folding his index finger and knocking it against my forehead.

"Ouch! That hurts!" I muttered as he hit my forehead with his knuckle.

"Don't say that too loud!" He said, smirking.

"Okay! Thank you, Mr. Walter the kind man." I laughed.

"You're welcome, Miss Lantern."

"No, I don't like that nickname!" I whined.

"But I do." We both laughed in harmony.

"Miss Laura! Come and play with us!" The children called.

"Coming!" I said, looking at Walter.

"I'll be going then." He was about to leave.

"You are leaving?" I didn't want him to leave. As he was looking at those children with his beautiful sparkling eyes I wanted so badly to kiss him. I just wanted to hug him for doing so much for them.

"Hey! Would you bow down a little," I said in a small voice. As he shortened himself and came near my face, I quickly turned and pecked his cheek gently. A very gentle kiss on his cheek. I don't know why I kissed him, but I just did and ran off to play with the kids; leaving him red and blushing.

I glanced back and smiled, watching as he placed his hand on his cheek, astonished.

Then a thought hit me; 'Oh my gosh! I kissed him! I...I just kissed him! Shit!!
