CHAPTER THIRTY FIVE
*not edited *
(Laura)
"Knock! Knock! Anyone in there?" called a voice.
My blood was boiling as we leaned away from each other. What the fuck?! I was so angry and I wanted to kill whoever had ruined the moment. Walter and me; our moment! Ruined! That desire to feel Walter's lips on mine and to kiss him passionately was crushed, forced back into the corners of my thoughts as anger overtook me. I cleared my head and was now back to my senses, watching as Walter clutched his laptop trying to impose the lie that nothing had happened.
"Who is it?" I snorted, wanting to throw a boiling cup of coffee on the intruding person.
"Mistress, it is me." The dear butler was standing, hands folded patiently in front of him, looking at me with a careful eye. I was trying to cool down and restrain from cursing him for ruining the start of something.
"What do you want?" I asked, stepping from Walter's room, my heart drowning in remorse. The butler continued to stare at my face rather than speak.
"Miss, are you well? Your face is red; it looks like you have a fever," he said to me with some hesitation.
"I am fine." I murmured, entering my own room but the butler interrupted me.
"Mr. Daniel is here to see you," he said, giving me a gentle smile.
I mentally screamed in annoyance while thinking, 'Daniel you really are something. What, I'm not quite sure yet.' I wanted to kill him I was so infuriated. Why is it that everyone suddenly wanted to be there when I was supposed to be having a moment with Walter?!
I clenched my fists tightly and ran downstairs to see what Daniel was doing there. I didn't want to see anyone and I was still thinking about my near miss of a first kiss with Walter. I wanted to run back up to his room and kiss him like my life depended on it.
'I don't know if an almost kiss means that he loves me or not. Maybe it was an awkward situation and I must have just misunderstood.' I was talking to myself now and I was smiling softly, my anger dissolving slightly. Entering the dining hall I found Daniel waiting for me.
"Hey!" He came forward, smiling at me and we shook hands.
I wasn't feeling so good anymore but I replied anyways, "Hey. What are you doing here?" I asked in a serious tone.
"Weren't you expecting me?" He chuckled, lifting his feet on the table.
I paused for a moment. "Oh! Definitely not! And this is not a pleasant surprise either!" I crossed my arms to show my anger. He raised his eyebrows looking at me giving a confused look.
"What? Did you and Walter have a fight?" he asked, turning his head and staring at the picture that was set on the table. Walter had always had it there, set up in it's black frame.
"Are you kidding me?" I chuckled. I noticed his staring at the picture. It was as if his eyes were glued to it.
"Should I call Walter?" My voice and body were stiff as a board with all the tension racked up.
"No! I just wanted to ask if you wanted to........ if you wanted to join me for a long walk?" He lowered his feet and stood.
'Why does he never want to talk to Walter? If they are like brothers then why are they so separated?' My mind felt dizzy.
"Yeah sure!" I replied smiling.
"Do you know who this person is in this picture?" Daniel asked, holding the picture in his hands and I could see his faced filled with joy. Walter seemed to be in his teens and an older man had his arms wrapped around him. It was Walter's graduation picture but I couldn't recognize the second person.
"Um......I don't know," I said uncertainly.
He kept smiling to himself as he looked at the picture. "It's my old man; Mr. Wilson," His smile brightened and he slowly brushed the picture with his hands.
"Do you miss him?" I asked, gauging his expression.
After a few moments of silence, "Yeah, I do. I think he'll be coming back soon and I am sure everything will be better then." He sighed, placing the picture back to the table.
"Walter loves him too? I think he misses him."
"I don't know about that." He moved back a bit and said, "I am waiting for you outside." he said picking up his keys and leaving the dining room. I quickly picked up my coat and covered myself and picked up my keys telling butler that I will be back in half an hour.
"So.. Daniel don't you have friends? I mean, I don't see you go and hangout with any, so I was just wondering." I asked him as we were both walking towards the roadside.
"Well, I didn't do well in my high school so I left. Never went back. I did suffer through some private tutoring but that was of no use. I am taking some special courses about writing and books so I have friends there. Besides that, I am still in contact with my high school friends but I am not allowed to leave home to see them since my mom is a crazy woman. She's so freaking paranoid all the time!" He looked annoyed as I dramatically pouted at him.
"Why did you leave your high school?"
"A traumatic experience. It's a long story....." he trailed off and sighed hopelessly. I actually felt sorry for him.
We walked in awkward silence for a bit longer before he broke it with a question. "Tell me something about yourself, Doctor."
"Well, there's nothing much to tell other than that my life has always been pretty tough. My parents died at a very early age and after that I worked hard to become a doctor. My dream is to help children suffering from cancer. And my married life, well that's just downright unfortunate....." I stopped before telling him more.
"Unfortunate? Are you kidding me? You guys have a loving marriage and all that crap, what's unfortunate about that?" he grumbled.
"You don't know anything, Daniel. Not everything that shines is gold!" I declared, changing our route to head back home.
"What do you mean?" he asked me again.
I threw my hands in the air. "Argg! Forget it! Just forget it, Daniel!" I growled, watching a car pass by.
"No! Tell me!"
I collapsed. Gave in. Failed to keep the secret yet again. Quietly, I started, "We never married because of love. Walter didn't want to marry Hannah and I had my own problems so I we made an......agreement, and married. I've loved him from the very beginning and I thought that maybe he would start to feel the same towards me, even if it is just a fake relationship. But he never changed! He is a rude and heartless man. I tried my best to make our relationship better but I couldn't. These days he is acting a bit better but I am still not sure if he really cares for me." I was about to burst into tears but Daniel held me tightly in his arms.
"I'm so sorry I didn't know that. I knew that he is a jerk and he is never gonna change though." He released the tight grip he had on me. "Do you want me to help with him? I could try, I mean. Oh, and what about Ella? Is Ella good to you?" Daniel asked.
"Oh yes! Ella is like a sister to me! I love her." I said, smiling.
"That's great. Maybe she could help you out too." He grinned slyly.
A thought struck me in the back of the head and I blurted, "Daniel, promise me that you are not going to tell this to anyone? It's between you and me and no one else! You get it?"
"Yes ma'am." He saluted, chuckling. Daniel took something from his pocket. The faint light still cast from the day revealed that it was a book.
"Here," he handed over me the book as we reached home.
'Without You'. It seemed like a romantic book.
"Thank you! I will return it to you as soon as I'm finished!" I thanked him and held the book tight.
"No problem, love." He winked as I punched his shoulder and said goodbye. Walter was playing a game on his phone when I walked in. He stopped when he noticed my entrance.
"So I see you've got your walking partner." He smirked as I looked at him.
"And what do you mean by that?" I asked, putting away my coat. 'Whatever this guy says and do I don't get it! I just don't!' I thought.
"You seem to forget things easily. You need a doctor for yourself." He chuckled as he stood from his seat and moved forward, looking at my blank face.
"And my dear husband, you too need a doctor yourself." I escaped his eye contact and tried on a grin.
"Really now? For which disease?" He started to laugh loudly. Okay talk about creepy! I have never seen him laughing so loudly.
"How about each of your extreme mental illnesses? Can't have a madman running the streets." I muttered and cut him off before he could say anything more. I did not need to hear what other diseases he was mentioning. I shuddered at the thought.
Changing the subject back to walking; "I do love taking long walks with a companion."
"And that someone is Daniel? Right?" He shot me a look of disgust. Okay I don't know why he was overreacting so I just ignored him and his sarcasm. I remained silent but now he was staring at the book I was holding in my hands.
He snatched it from me and said, reading the title,"Without You, is this a romance cliché?" he asked, staring at the book with the most unpleasant of gestures.
"I don't know! I like romance clichés and Daniel and I share the same taste!" I said, grabbing the book from him.
"You are such a girly girl!" he said, brushing his hair with his finger tips as a wave of heat passed through my body. He noticed and muttered, "Stop staring at me!" and ran upstairs, leaving me to feel annoyed.
"Whatever! I have better things to look at!" I snorted and went upstairs to my room, trying to ignore my blush.
***
That week was a good one and better than the previous. I was kept nice and busy with work and many of the surgical cases. I had a movie plan with John but I cancelled it. Daniel had lately been busy with his courses and work but I went to the coffee shop with him a couple of times to share secrets with him. I can't help think he's a nice guy and overall a good person.
It was finally Friday and I had planned to come home early as Ella and I had decided to go shopping.
"I will be coming to your house at 4:00 pm. See you!" The call ended with that. As I was about to leave for home John came to me.
"Hey! Can I come with you? I am so bored!" John pleaded even as I was saying no.
"I have to go! Do you understand that?" I shouted as I was annoyed.
"Come on! I can help you out! Please?" I nodded, getting even more annoyed with his pathetic stubborness.
As me and John reached home I found Ella already waiting.
"Hey Ella!" I ran towards her giving her a tight hug. John, who was standing behind, was staring at us like we were crazed teenage girls.
I rolled my eyes at him and beckoned him closer. "Ella! This is John and John this..." before I could say more John interrupted.
"Is the famous Princess Ella. The beauty queen." John said softly, kissing her hands as I stared him in anger.
"Oh! Nice to meet you John," said Ella, smiling and trying to contain her giggles. She didn't do a very good job.
"Oh! My God! You said John! My heart is going crazy now!" He leaned closer and whispered, "Can you say it again?" He was starting to act like he always did around beautiful women. A total stud muffin.
"Shut up!" I scolded him as I noticed Ella blushing. John opened the door for Ella. All the way to the mall he kept talking to her as if I never even existed.
"Don't even try to win her over!" I whispered to him as we slowly walked into the first store.
"I found my true love, Laura!" His eyes gleamed and I jammed his side with my elbow.
Ella had a good eye in picking up the best dresses and John kept trying to flirt with her as he always does.
"You are the most prefect woman I have ever met," John remarked as we were having evening tea together. Ella blushed again and now I was smelling something fishy. Maybe she was interested in him.
"And you are the finest man I have ever met!" Ella chuckled as they both talked and I was feeling the urge to runaway, leaving them together. Later that evening as John was with Ella at the front door of her home, she continued to thank him.
As soon as he returned to the car, I roared in outrage."I will kill you! You dumbass!"
He looked at me with wide eyes, "What the hell? I like her! Can't I like her?! What's the big deal, Laura?! What are you, jealous?" He was definitely mad at me.
"You have said the same words for almost every woman you have ever met! Oooh, Laura, I love that woman, oh never mind I love this woman too!" I cried out like as I was disappointed in him. I ignored his jealousy comment in full. I was not about to open up that can of beans again.
"Chill, baby! I really do adore her!" He calmed down slowly.
"That should be true! Or el-"
He cut me off before I could continue further. "Fine! I know she is your hubby's sister and all. And you don't want Walter to kill me for cheating on her sister, whatever!" He laughed as if it were all a joke.
"Sorry, boy, she isn't interested in you!" I got out of the car and pat his back.
"We'll see about that!" he laughed.
A perfect day with two great friends. I started wondering and thought that Ella and John together wouldn't be such a bad combination.

(Third Person; Walter)
It was Sunday morning and Walter was making a cup of hot chocolate for himself but he ran towards the door as the bell rang. Opening the door, Walter never would have guessed that this was going to be the biggest surprise he would ever get. Walter couldn't believe his eyes as he stared at the one man he had always respected and loved. Mr. Wilson!
"Have you decided to keep us standing like this for eternity?" the old man said hugging Walter tightly. Tears ran down his cheeks as they both saw each other.
"Uncle!" he cried in surprise. There were more people along with him; Mrs. Joseph and Hannah were both staring at Walter. "What are you guys doing here?" Walter asked almost shocked.
"Aren't you happy to see us?" Mr. Wilson asked as all of them entered the house, observing intensely how big and gorgeous it was. Walter was sweating. It was a trauma for him to have Mr. Wilson in his home.
"Why didn't Daniel tell me about this?" he muttered to himself. "Come," Walter said, showing them the passage to the dining hall.
"Your house is so beautiful! I'm seeing it again after such a long time and it's still amazing!" remarked Hannah who was holding Walter's arm. He couldn't shrug her off she held to him so tight.
As they all sat down at the table, there was a sort of joy and color added to the house.
"You didn't tell me about visiting Toronto!" Walter exclaimed, hands resting on the table.
"I wanted to give you the surprise of a life time, young man," Mr. Wilson said in a cheerful voice, eyes still wandering. "By the way, I have heard a lot about you and your wife from Daniel. Is Daniel still in contact with you?" he asked, lighting his cigarette. Mrs. Joseph was sitting quietly and a layer of hatred flashed in her eyes.
"Walter! My dear I have missed you so much. So I decided to visit you and your wife." she said dramatically. Walter knew that this woman is really a hurdle.
Standing, he muttered, "I'll be back in a minute," and headed upstairs. Walter quickly ran upstairs, knocking at Laura's door but it was of no use. She was sleeping deeply and it seemed she'd taken drugs for sleeping.
The door was unlocked. 'Okay! I can go in!' Walter was talking to himself, feeling a little uncomfortable. He went inside and the room was messy with books scattered all around. Laura was sleeping peacefully with hair all around her face. Her lips were parted and she looked dainty and beautiful like a fairy.
"Laura, wake up! Laura!" Walter was trying to wake her but she was still sleeping. He lifted his hand, folding his index finger and knocking it against her forehead.
"Ouch!" She woke with a jolt and was about to slap but Walter caught her wrist. "John?" she asked, rubbing her eyes as she opened them her jaw dropped seeing Walter in her room.
"What the hell?" she shouted, covering herself in the blanket as she was wearing nothing more than a small shirt. "What are you doing here?" she murmured as she saw him laughing like an idiot.
"I am here to sleep with you. Wrong! I have a better taste. Well, you need to get ready in ten minutes and go downstairs. My uncle is here and make sure you dress properly and like a decent woman." Walter told her as she glared.
"What? Your uncle? Wait..." before she could say more he went to the door and grinned.
"Dress like a decent woman, Laura. Preferably more than just that skimpy little shirt." Smirking at the blush that caused on her face, he then left for downstairs. As he went downstairs he joined their company and started to talk to them.
(Laura)
Walter blasted me with the news that his uncle was downstairs and I needed to get ready like an elegant lady. 'Okay what does that actually mean?'
I decided to dress into a long skirt and put on a light make up and curl my hair beautifully. My skirt was rather long and I looked perfect in it. I was trying to think of how to behave as I was feeling nervous. I slowly came downstairs, swallowing hard as I saw three people. A young woman whom I recognized as Hannah and with her was an old woman and an older man.
"Hello! Everyone." I said, trying control my heartbeat.
"Hello! Come here, girl," the old man asked me to come to him and I did as told, still feeling nervous. I was looking to Walter who was still gazing at me in surprise. I wasn't sure what for.
"What a fine woman you are!" the older man declared, kissing my forehead gently. It was plenty obvious that he was overjoyed to see me. The other two women who were staring at me were not happy to see me for sure.
"You are my little son's wife. How did you make this stubborn man love you? Either way, Walter I am proud of you for choosing such a perfect woman." He laughed and asked me to sit down beside him. As he talked to me about other subjects I could see Hannah and her mother looking at me with hatred.
"Laura dear, from which family ground are you?" the woman asked me in an aggressive voice.
"I don't understand," I said, hesitantly looking to Walter for help.
"We are from the famous Scott family but which family are you from?" she asked me in a way as if I was a maid or some lowly grub.
"You shouldn't ask these questions!" Mr. Wilson said to Hannah's mother.
As we were all talking Hannah suddenly stood up and said,"Walter! Can we go into your room? I need to burrow some CD's."
I didn't like the way she was holding her arms. Walter didn't say no and he quickly took her upstairs. I was feeling uneasy and I just wanted her to remove her hands from my husband. It took them half an hour but she was still upstairs with him. My thoughts were disturbing me and I couldn't feel good. I excused them and asked the butler to prepare for lunch. As I was helping the butler in the kitchen I could hear their voices as they came downstairs.
"Do you remember the day we bunked our class?" Hannah asked in a high voice.
"Yes I do!" Walter chuckled.
Hannah came into the kitchen without Walter and stood behind me. She was such a slut and a real bitch. I hated even the sight of her and wanted to kill her with the knife I was holding.
"Hey Laura!" she said in her irritating voice.
"Yeah."
"Seems like Walter still loves me. He is the same as before and we still have feeling for each other." As she was speaking this load of shit I remained silent.
"Jealous much?" she asked.
"I don't give a shit!" I shouted and went to the other side of the room.
"Your biggest mistake was marrying my fiancé and you will have to pay for it!" She laughed wickedly as I stared at her with rage darkening my eyes.
"Go ahead and do whatever you can. As I said; I don't give a dancing fuck!" We were about to either fight or break out screaming maniacally but thankfully Walter entered.
"What's going on, girls?" he asked, placing his hands on my shoulder as I was about to burst out.
"Oh! Walter, I was trying to help her but it seems that she doesn't need my help," Hannah replied.
"My wife is perfect at cooking so, no, she doesn't need help." Walter said still had his hands on my shoulders. Hannah quickly left the kitchen and as she left I smiled at Walter.
"I suck at cooking!" I whispered to him.
"I know," he chuckled and helped me in placing the dishes.
"So, Laura, as a doctor you must be pretty busy? Do you give your time to my little boy?" Mr. Wilson asked as I looked at Walter cluelessly.
"Yes I do," I replied hesitantly.
"Lunch is delicious!" Mrs. Joseph said out of nowhere. I was surprised to be hearing a compliment from her.
"Thanks to my lovely wife. My lovely wife who is quite flawless!" Walter said, making me blush as he finished his lunch.
"You never thanked me for making cupcakes for you!" Hannah said, pouting.
I wished I still had that knife. Bitch would've been dead by then. Walter rolled his eyes, "Right, thanks for everything, Hannah!" He was just as tired of Hannah's complaining.
As they all set to leave Mr. Wilson again hugged me and told Walter,"Don't you ever hurt my new daughter! Or I will smack your head! Laura you can count on me and yes I have heard a lot about you from Daniel who really likes you." he said cheerfully. He took out a box which had something in it.
"Walter this is our family's belonging and I wish to pass it on to my daughter in law. You should make her wear it afterwards." he said to Walter, placing the box in his hands.
Walter surrounded his arms around his shoulders and smiled at him nodding.
"Also, give my regards to Ella," he said, about to leave.
"Well congratulations. You are now a part of the Scott family." Mrs. Joseph said and they all left. Here I thought I was part of the family this whole time.
"Well you sure have skills," Walter said, smirking down at me.
"Like what?" I chuckled.
"Like impressing people and making people love you."
"Well, there are a lot of people left to love me."
"Don't worry, I think you have enough people to love you!"
***
Ella came to join us later that night and we decided to sit together out on the terrace.
"Why are you here again?" Walter asked, annoyed.
"Because I missed my sister!" She looked at me and we both smirked.
"See Laura, what did I tell you! You really do have fans!" He picked up his hot coffee and took a sip. We all had a comforting zone and it was smooth.
"Whatever. I don't think they're fans though. More like people who love me, right?" I laughed. I knew things were getting better between us and now his heart had opened up a bit. I smiled to myself as I thought, 'He laughs, he teases me and he stares me and I love him the way he is.'
"Walter, can you play guitar for me?" asked Ella, looking at Walter who was busy playing a game on his phone.
"No!" he replied as usual.
"Come on, please! For Laura's sake!" she took my name to make him emotional.
"Only if she asks me to play for her," he noticed my face going red.
"Well.. Can you?" I asked quietly
He reached behind him for the guitar. "Anything for you."
'Wait! What did he say; anything for me? What does he feel? I don't get him.' I shook my head and bit my lip, listening to him play.
