CHAPTER THIRTY EIGHT
Laura
Walter gently placed a second soft kiss to my forehead, making me blush as my stomach fluttered. My heart beat rapidly and I could hardly contain how much I wanted to kiss him on the lips. Opening my eyes I saw my friends glaring at me as if I had ran away from an asylum and wasn't supposed to be there.
"What?" My cheeks turned red and heat radiated from them.
"Love birds," whispered Daniel. Walter had already proceeded towards the exit without me.
"Shut up!" I grumbled, noticing everyone laughing and giggling at me and my red face.
Stefan, Paul, and Jennie decided to go home together and Daniel would go home on his own, the same with Ella as well. We all said our goodbyes and headed towards the different cars.
I waited for Walter to move the car out. I swept some stray strands of hair from my eyes, my head angled down. I tried not to look at him. I opened the car door and slid into it. It was an awkward situation and I didn't know what else to do except stare out of the window. Walter turned on the radio and the song that immediately began blasting through the speakers was Animals by Maroon 5.
Enjoying the music, I cautiously tilted my head to steal a glance at his face. He looked pissed, his jaw visibly clenching as he glared straight out at the road, his fists wrapped tightly around the steering wheel. I turned back to the window.
I knew this would happen eventually. Daniel shouldn't have asked such a stupid thing from Walter. I knew he was annoyed but it wasn't a big deal, really. All it was was kissing your wife.
"I never knew you were good at boating," I finally spoke out, trying to get rid of that awkward silence.
"Yeah. You didn't do too bad either." He smirked as we stopped at a red light waiting for the signal to change.
I hesitated for a moment, "Why did you come when you refused to? And what was Sarah doing with you?" I couldn't understand it for the life of me.
He remained silent for a while but then a big smile spread across his face and he started to laugh.
"What? Is this funny to you?!" I declared in annoyance.
He kept smiling and laughing like a giddy teenager and I was just looking at him with a blank face, waiting for him to finish.
"Well, I wanted to come and surprise you. As for Sarah, she jumped me and started to ask me to help her out so I had to do it, unwillingly." He then took an unexpected break as we stopped.
"I see." I took a deep sigh and felt the relief on the exhale. The guards opened the garage, directing Walter where to park the car as we were finally home.
"Walter?" I asked, coming out of the car and trying to swallow past the lump in my throat.
"What?"
"Actually I wanted to apologize for...um...what Daniel asked you to....you know. I know it was quite embarrassing for you." I finally let it out.
"About what?" He shrugged as if he didn't know what I was talking about.
"The, you know...having to kiss me, part," I said, face red as a tomato.
He handed his coat to the butler. "I didn't do it for Daniel," he smiled at me. I was shocked to hear that but I knew he meant something else. He always did.
"Right, you mean to keep up your facade in front of people," I replied sarcastically.
"No."
"Then why did you do it?" I asked eagerly.
He glared deep into my eyes, "I wanted to."
"What...you..." I mumbled as I heard what he just say. 'How hormonal is this guy? Is he really sick? Does he have mood swings? Is he serious?' I asked myself.
"What, am I not allowed to?" A smug grin littered his face.
"Um...I have to go and work on my patients' profiles." I mumbled. I wanted to run away from this awkward situation. I tried to move back and run towards the TV lounge and escape Walter's nondetachable eye contact.
As I was walking towards the lounge Walter ran and blocked my way, keeping his hands on the wall. He almost completely filled the doorway. He shifted and grabbed the top of the door frame, his body obviously taught as he leaned forward, smirking. I tried to look away and will the heat on my face to go away.
I crossed my arms, frowning since I didn't know what he was trying to do. I didn't know what to say but when I did speak it was a different version than what I had thought out.
"Will you move?" I asked politely, keeping my gaze to the floor.
"Nope."
"But I have to go, Walter." I tried to shuffle around him but he was still standing there blocking the way and looking all too happy about it.
"I know." I had no idea what was he trying to do.
"Walter, move!" I snapped, hiding the uneasy feeling settled in my gut.
"You can try leaving if you want." He stared at me intently and I was feeling awkward but then I forced myself to relax and lean against the wall.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"Nothing," was his low yet leveled response.
"Then..."
"I'm just standing, go around me."
"You won't let me and I am already late!"
"It doesn't matter," he kept arguing.
"Fine!" I stood there with my arms crossed and a cold crease to my tired expression. Neither of us knew what to say so all we did was glare. I was simply annoyed. 'Sometimes Walter acts like such a baby!'
"What's with you? You're acting kind of strange," I gave a confused expression.
"Maybe, but can I not look at you?" he asked, going red.
My eyes were opened wide in shock. "What... You see me everyday!" I fired back.
"Not....not so close," he said. I was standing still as a statue, attempting to recover myself from the heart attack he was giving me.
"I have important work to do," I tried to convince him and finally he moved back, giving me just enough room to move past.
"Thanks," I said passing near by him feeling like my heart was pumped up on caffeine and going crazy in my rib cage. 'Was he trying to be romantic? I'm such an idiot! I really did spoil everything!' I thought hopelessly.
I quickly ran up the stairs and into my room, throwing myself onto my bed. I immediately started to think about him. "Does he like me?" I whispered aloud. I groaned, "He definitely has feelings and I was such an idiot! I bet he thinks so too!"
Thinking of how stupid I was, I closed my eyes and decided to get up and go to the library and read a book to calm myself down. I went to the library and decided to look for the book I had kept on-shelf last week. As I was looking for my book I saw a stray book lying on the front table. The book was half-opened and I quickly started to turn the main title page. Surprisingly it was a romantic book and I remembered that I had suggested it to Daniel the last time we had met.
"But why did Walter read it? He hates romance clichés the most!" I said to myself. Leaving all vulnerable thoughts behind, I searched the rest of the library to find my book. I picked it up and headed back to my room. As I passed Walter's room, I peeked in to see he was having coffee while laying in his bed. I simply smiled and decided to work on my patient's profile's. Just remembering the thoughts of wanting Walter to kiss me was enough to keep me awake all night.
***
Working on Mondays is always worse and typically more tiring then the other days of the week. Jennie, John, and I were doing research on the glial cells of brain. They were one of the factors that caused problems such as brain tumors. Working on research takes a lot of time and I was finally done with the last part.
"I hope our research is successful," said John typing on the computer as Jennie was reading the printed information we'd found.
"Hopefully." I threw myself down on the arm-chair. I quickly finished my work and got a text from Walter.
The text said, "Be home by 5."
I quickly replied, asking: "Why?"
His response came faster than I thought it would. "Don't get on my nerves. See you then, bye."
'This guy is going to drive me crazy' I thought to myself.
I wrote a permission letter to Dr. Sam asking him to allow me to leave the research lab and go home early. Thankfully he allowed it and I quickly packed up and left.
As I stepped further into the house, I spotted Walter dressed in a tight blue t-shirt with his hair brushed and gelled. I flushed, watching silently as he adjusted the belt that wound through the loops of his jeans. He ignored me as he tugged at the blue colar hugging too tightly to his neck. He sighed heavily and a whiff of his colon was sent my way. My mind was sent into a flurry at the nearly overpowering smell.
I raised my eyebrows, watching him with a questioning look on my face. "Are you going to a meeting? If so, why did you call me?"
"Don't make me mad right now." He crossed his muscular arms and looked at me, pouting.
"But I don't get it," I scowled still trying to figure out what was up with him. He just simply grinned and came forward, hitting on my forehead with his crossed finger.
"You really need a doctor. Why should I even bother to remind you?" he asked in a disappointed tone of voice.
"No, actually you're the one who needs a doctor for your mood swing problems." I laughed sarcastically.
"I don't have mood swings because I don't have woman problems," he argued while trying not to laugh.
"Your mood swings are worse than a woman on her period!" I shot back as he let out an obnoxious laugh.
"You'd be the only one of us to have that problem, Laura darling." A smirk etched itself into his face.
"Okay, stop. You better tell me what's up with you now." I pressed my lips into a tight line as I looked up at his face.
"Madam, you were the one who asked for a date, remember honey, that date? Or do you want something more to hear? I feel like a complete idiot now!" he said in fake anguish.
I suddenly remembered what I had said to him before about a date. "Then this means you were serious about it?" I began to laugh, recklessly loosing control of my senses.
"I fulfill my promises." he tried to clarify.
"I thought you were never going to go on a date. Sorry, I'm just trying to recover myself from this shock." I snorted as he glared.
"Do you want to go? Or shall I go back to my room?" He was disappointed.
"Okay, okay, I'll be ready in a minute." I said in a cheerful voice and quickly went upstairs. I searched for a T- shirt with shorts. I remembered that John had given me a pair of t-shirts that normal couples wore on dates. So I quickly changed myself and took the other for Walter.
"Here," I handed him the t-shirt.
He glanced from me to the shirt then back again. "What the hell is this?"
"It's a couple's t-shirt and I want you to wear it. Please! Please!" I pleaded him but I was quite sure that he wouldn't ever agree.
"Are you kidding me?" he grumbled.
"Come on! Please!" I said to him once again.
"We aren't teenagers, we're supposed to be adults!" He muttered something under his breath, "Fine!" And after all he agreed.
He slipped away to change his shirt but returned in a few seconds. We both were wearing the same shirts. We had the driver available so we both were in the back seat on the way to out date. I was feeling nervous, excited, and a rainbow of mixed feelings. It was my first date after all and I expected it to be as good as never.
"So, where are we going?" I asked slowly.
"I've found the perfect insane asylum for you and I. We can even share a cell!" He always replied in the most inappropriate way.
"I'm serious." I changed my tone.
"So am I."
I remained silent then because I was tired of his sick games. Anyways he was trying to be a different Walter and I was enjoying it. After a half an hour, the driver stopped the car and we were at an unknown place. We were at a wonderland and it all came to me as a big surprise.
My mouth fell open in shock and I was looking at the crowded area and bustling people. It looked like a heaven with lots of fun things and roller coasters and rides.
"This is amazing!" I remarked, still looking at the wonderland.
"Haven't you ever been here?" Walter asked, smiling.
"No! Thank you so much, Walter!"
"You're welcome. Now let's go!" He pushed through the crowds and I followed, still awestruck. As we were passing clusters of crowds, I could see people enjoying themselves and eating ice cream and parents taking their children to play games. I could see young couples holding hands and having fun. I was feeling a bit sick and nauseous.
Walter stopped at the ticket booth. He paid for a bunch then turned to me. "Here you go, tickets for shooting the arrow over there," he pointed as I looked at the stall in the corner.
"But I'm not good at it." I replied and he made an ugly face.
"Just try." We moved towards the stand together.
"Hello Madam, hope you enjoy it. If you hit one target, you get one prize. You get three tries!" The game director handed me the little bow and set three plastic arrows in front of me.
My first shot was useless as well as the second. I was really disappointed and annoyed with myself. Not to mention that Walter was trying to not laugh at me.
"I hope this works out!" I muttered, slowly praying that my last arrow would hit its mark. But it didn't and I was again feeling extremely disappointed.
"You were awful!" Walter chuckled as he tried his luck.
"Well let's see how you can do." I smirked as he easily lifted he bow and shot the arrow right at the target. The arrow stuck out of the red target's bulls-eye.
"Wow, that was the best I've seen all night!" the counter man exclaimed, praising the bastard in front of me. All three of his arrows were on the exact spot and I was feeling jealous.
"Here is your gift, sir," The clerk handed over a beautiful key chain.
"Thanks," Walter said.
"You were good....." I was feeling envious.
"Of course I was!" he said proudly. He handed me the key chain and we decided to go to a ball throwing game where you had to knock down the bottles stacked.
"Don't buy tickets for me! Its going to be a waste," I crossed my arms and leaned against the wall.
"Thankfully I didn't," he laughed, being a real jerk. In the first round only one bottle was left. In the second turn he was able to hit all of them making me even more jealous and shocked.
"I doubt this is your first date." I giggled as he laughed.
"You should feel proud of your husband," he said as we headed towards the rides part of the park. I was now feeling extremely dizzy and also had a bit of a fever.
"Do you like cotton candies?" Walter asked, pointing towards the guy who was selling some.
"Yeah," I murmured looking down and trying to take in everything I was feeling.
Walter quickly noticed my flushed face and my shaking hands. I quickly covered up myself and tried to make it seem like I was okay.
"Are you okay?" he asked, gently grabbing my wrist.
"Yeah."
"Are you sure?" he asked again.
"I'm sure, let's have a ride on that roller coaster." He bought one ticket and handed it to me.
"One? Aren't you coming?" I asked eagerly.
"No," he seemed a bit nervous.
"Why? Come on! Its going to be a hell of a lot of fun!" I grabbed his hand but he yanked his away.
"I don't like it! You go and I'll wait for you," he said, patting on shoulder.
"But why? It will be good."
"Because I'm scared of em! Got it?! You happy now?!" He tuned his face away from me.
"Really? But it's not a big deal, I promise!" I wanted him to come with me.
"I've never tried it..." before he could say more I grabbed his arms and bought a ticket for him.
"Laura! I don't want to!" He yelled.
"You can't leave now!" I chuckled and tightly buckled myself in. Walter was murmuring something and closing his eyes as he fumbled with his own buckle.
I reached over and buckled him. "Never knew Mr. Ice Man was such a coward." I chuckled as he ignored me and kept praying.
"Will you shut up?" he snorted and closed his eyes as the ride began.
Slowly, the roller coaster car ticked forward, gradually getting higher and higher as it crawled up the hill. There was a pause when the car reached the top. I gripped the bars in front of me, waiting for the best part.
Gears released and wheels turned. We dropped and I could feel my stomach in my throat. The car zipped down the straight up hill. I couldn't tell who screamed louder, me or Walter. I waved my arms around, laughing and screaming happily as we flipped upside down.
"Holy mother of God!!" Walter was about to faint as the speed reached maximum. He was going crazy and I never knew Walter, who always tried to be cold and harsh, was such a coward when it came to roller coaster. I tightly took his hands into mine and grabbed it tightly so that he could feel better.
We looped up and around a second time. "I am going to die!" he shouted but I was holding him tight and just after a minute the ride stopped.
"It's over, you can stop screaming, you coward!" I laughed as he slowly opened his teary eyes.
"Laura! What the hell?! You almost killed me!" He scrambled out of the roller coaster car. I handed him a bottle of water.
"Sorry," I apologized as he gulped the water quickly.
He didn't say anything more but remained silent. He brushed his hair with his fingers and I couldn't stop looking at his handsome face. His jaw line was so prominent and I could see that some women were having a good look on him. As we both sat on the bench trying to relax for a moment after that life taking ride I saw a woman siting beside me with her daughter. Walter was gazing at her as if he knew her and I, being an over protective wife, was feeling very immature.
Suddenly Walter's expressions changed as he looked at the woman and yelled,"Jessica? Is that you?" he asked the blonde sitting next to me as she lifted her daughter into her arms.
"Walter?!" She got up with her blue eyes almost as wide as the Pacific Ocean. Walter stood up as well.
She quickly hugged him and Walter gently placed a kiss on her forehead. I couldn't bear any more of it. What if some unknown woman hugged your husband? You would have that same wave of jealousy all over your body. That burning sensation was now all over my mind and I quickly got up, walking towards the side.
"How have you been? Jess? Is this your daughter?" Walter questioned her in his soft tone. When it comes to other people he shows his soft side.
"Yes this is Charlotte. You've changed so much, Walter. You are not like the way you were in school." She laughed as I kept watching the both of them.
"Maybe... Is that a good change, I wonder? So why are you in Toronto these days?" he asked her as they both exchanged gestures. I was trying to control my anger but it was clear from my face and she finally acknowledged my existence.
"And this is your wife, if I'm not wrong?" Jessica pointed towards me as I simply smiled back.
"Yes, Laura, this is Jessica my school friend. Jess, Laura is my beautiful wife." As he said the word 'beautiful' I felt butterflies flutter around my stomach again.
"Nice to meet you," I said, giving a weak smile.
Nodding to me, she turned her attention back to Walter. "How is Hannah? Blake? James? What about Hannah?" she asked him as Walter started to look at my expressions.
"I am not in contact with them but I do know that Blake is in France. Hannah is in my company and we broke up so..." he mumbled.
"Oh! Well I'm getting late. I should be going. Will meet you soon at dinner." she said.
"Sure," Walter smiled, giving her his number and hugging back that awful woman, he had officially spoiled our romantic date.
"Don't make such an ugly face!" he grinned as I kept silent.
"I'm already ugly," I said slowly, looking at my watch showing it was almost 8 pm.
"You don't have to say it. Someone's jealous," he whispered, walking towards the eating area.
"Never in a million years!" I cried indignantly.
"Maybe a thousand then?" he teased.
Taking a deep breath, he clarified, "Jess was my ex-girl friend. I still love her but isn't that unfortunate that she is married and has a kid. Life is so unfair!" he pouted.
"Why are you telling me?" I snapped back at him.
"You're my date."
"You are so good at arguing, Walter. Well I have something to tell you." I said trying to change the subject.
"What is it?" he asked.
"I have a game and I want you to come with me to the hilly area." I pulled him as we both moved towards the hill side. It was a sloppy area with couples lying on grass and children playing.
"Don't tell me we're playing hide and seek!" he grinned.
"No! It's a fun game. Look, I will ask you to close your eyes and your ears. Then you have to take a deep breath. After that, with your eyes and ears closed, just try to describe the first person that comes into your mind. The person that comes into your mind first is the person you love the most." I guided him as I saw him raising his eye brows.
"This is pathetic." he said.
"No! Come on!" I pleaded.
"Fine! Whatever, ugly!" he said, closing his eyes. I made sure he was keeping his eyes closed and his ears as well. The moment he opened his eyes I started to laugh.
"Who was it? Don't lie!" I asked but he didn't say a word.
Now uneasy, I tried again, "Walter? Who was it?"
I kept asking but after a while he said, "Ella."
"Really, Ella?" I was somehow unsure.
"Let's go! We're late."
"But.." I tried to speak but he didn't stop and I was forced to follow after him back to the car.
Walter (3rd Person)
After helping Laura win the race, Walter was supposed to kiss her. Or so said her friends. The only reason he kissed her was because he wanted to. He was falling for her but it had started a long time back. Seeing Stefan always made him mad. After that he also decided to read romantic books because Laura liked it. Seeing her smile made his stomach flutter and heart race.
He also agreed to go on a date because Laura wanted to.The next day he was waiting for her eagerly but she seemed to forget about it.
"You wanted me to go on a date? I am feeling like a complete idiot now," he said.
"But I thought that you were never going to go on a date. I am just trying to recover myself from this shock." he was disappointed.
Laura and Walter decided to go on a date wearing that couple t-shirt. He hated these kind of cheesy things but he did it because Laura was happy. Teasing her the time and their argument Walter always loved it. He enjoyed it when she snapped back at him.
Walter met Jessica who was his school best friend and his basketball team member. Walter knew that Laura was jealous so he lied that she was his girlfriend.
"I have a game and I want you to come with me to the hilly area." she pulled him as they both moved towards the hill-side. It was a sloppy area with couples lying on the grass and children playing.
She made sure he was keeping his eyes closed and his ears as well. The moment he opened his eyes she started to laugh.
"Who was it? Don't lie!" she asked but he didn't say a word.
The moment he closed his eyes and the first person in his heart, in his mind was Laura. It was Laura whom he thought of; but loving her? That was a load of shit because he never expected it this way. Falling for the most annoying woman on the planet! This couldn't be true!
