CHAPTER SEVEN

Weeks have passed since that day, and since then, I've been stuck in the same routine. Nothing has changed in my life. I was busy with patients and the society. Jennie was still worrying that I would never find that special someone and live that peaceful life she seems to think I want. John also wanted me to get a boyfriend, my life was very lonely and they thought I needed a partner. Even though you don't need a relationship in your life to be happy. My friends really needed to get a life and stop worrying about things that isn't their business.

"Good morning, sweetie," said John giving me a smile.

"Good morning," I smiled back at him, trying to fake it well.

"You look sad, dear, is everything okay?" John asked, seeing right through me.

"I'm fine," I started, not wanting to have a conversation about anything.

"You're lying, aren't you?"

"Yeah, actually," I glared at him, " I mean, I know you guys care about my well being and all, but you need to stop getting on my case about finding some guy to marry!" I yelled, "It won't come over night and stop pressuring me to settle down!"

"Oh, don't be like that," he came near me and kissed on my head, "You'll find the right one eventually," he completely ignored me.

I groaned and pushed him away, "stop it, you're awful," and I walked away from him.

Two weeks have passed and I was busy with my tight schedule. It was Friday and I was almost completely free in the evening. I closed my eyes and just let myself think, I needed some peace and quiet from all the nonsense my friends give out. Someone entered my room but I didn't even bother to open my eyes.

"Doctor?" a familiar male voice called out.

I opened my eyes and looked around. Someone was sitting in front of me. He was tall and was wearing a three piece suit and he was already giving me that stare. I recognized him at once. "So it seems you forget things easily," he said in his deep voice, sounding very amused.

I looked at him, still in shock. "It's not that," I said not looking at him, "I just didn't expect to see you again."

"Then you should be more keen on remembering your promises," he laughed, my shock starting to fade as I remembered.

"Well, since I'm so busy in this moment in time," I started, making sure I sounded very sarcastic, "I told you so... Aaaaand in your face, you were wrong!"

Walter grinned, "Yes, yes, I was, but alas, that isn't the only reason why I'm here."

"Please, do explain," I motioned him to take a seat in the chair in front of my desk.

His smiled slowly disappeared as he sat down, his face shown nothing but pure curiosity, "Who," he paused for a moment, "who saved my life?"

I didn't show any emotion as I picked up some documents, "that's confidential; I would have to get permission to look through the logs on who was working that shift."

He looked disappointed as his face fell into a frown, he scratched the back of his head as he tried to bring up the mood again, "Anyway," he started, not having the same energy as before, " I was also wondering if I could volunteer here, I still have time off from work to recover and I'd be happy to help for at least ten days."

"Of course, I'm not sure why you came to me about this, though. You have to go to the front desk and fill out some paper work," I placed the papers down and we both stood up and shook hands. "Just tell them you know me."

"Yes Ma'am," he said, his smile returned as he headed towards the door.

Right before he left, I realized that I didn't even know his full name, "hey!" I yelled out to him, "What's your full name?"

He turned around half way down the hall and yelled back, "It's Walter, Walter Scott!"

I kept thinking about Walter for a while after he left. It was rather impressive that he was willing to be surrounded by death after coming so close to it. Though it was nice to know he was finally smiling again. And even though he is also proud, arrogant and cold, he should be a great asset to the society.

"So this guy seems different," John noted as he put his arm around my shoulder.

"Walter," I corrected him and nodded, "And I have to agree with you, he's a different type of asshole business man, who knew they weren't all sharks."

He laughed, "Well, well, well, you even know his name and profession."

"I sure hope so if I'm his doctor," I rolled my eyes, "Stop it, you're trying too hard."

"Yeah, you're right, he seems like a very awkward individual," he finally decided to take a hint and stop before it got out of hand.

"He's going to be helping out at the society for a little over a week," I said sounding slightly agitated.

"Really now?" he asked sarcastically, "Maybe I should join you then."

I sighed, "No, I don't need you playing match maker, I know you well enough. Stay out of this, please, for me?"

"Fair enough, be that way," he grunted.

"Jennie is waiting for me, I'll speak with you later," I turned around and went out front where I saw Jennie's car parked right outside. On the way back home I explain to Jen how someone new will be helping at the society, Jen seemed excited and how she was sure the children would be too. They just loved meeting new people.

The following Monday evening I was sitting by my office window, it was a rather slow day and I just wanted my shift to be over. That was when I saw Walter come out of his car, two guards following close behind him. It took him a few minutes to get up here, but when he did, he had this serious look on his face, "Doctor." He greeted.

"Yeah, yeah, you better not act like that in front of the children," I half joked, "Let's get going."

"Are we going together or..." he trailed off.

"If you want. I usually walk, it's only fifteen minutes," I said and walked over to the door.

"If we take the car it will only be three minutes, I apologize for being here late," he held back a smug look as he held up the keys to his car.

I looked at the time and then back to him, there really wasn't anytime to debate, so I nodded my head in agreement and we were on our way. It was a rather awkward three minutes, none of us had anything really to talk about, and no common interest we were aware of.

"So," I finally managed the courage to speak up as we walked up to the building, "what's your thought on winter?"

He shrugged and avoided the question, "What do you think of them?"

"I love them honestly, the cold is refreshing," I answered.

"That explains a lot," he started to laugh.

I couldn't help but laugh a little as well, as well as punch him in the shoulder, "Hilarious." I rolled my eyes and smiled slightly. We reached the society and at the gate a group of children ran towards me and showered me with hugs.

After we all greeted one another I introduced Walter, "Okay, sweethearts, I want you to meet someone new, he's going to be helping you guys, okay?"

"What's his name?" A cute red head girl with freckles asked.

"You can call him Mr. Scott," I smiled.

"Miss Laura! Is he your boyfriend?" One of the children in the back asked.

I just laughed, "Of course not! I have better taste than that!" Walter turned and gave me a slight glare and I just returned the smug look he gave me a while back.

Walter showed no expressions as he helped out with the children. He checked them with me and played games with them. It looked like he was gentle with the little ones. I went to another room for the medicines. This Cancer Society was run by Dr. Peter and he was the one to establish it. He wanted to help poor children suffering from cancer. He asked everyone to help him out but there was no response. John and I were interested and I tried my best to help these children but one or two people were not enough, they needed a lot more people. The building had become old and shabby and there was also lack of medicines. My charity was not enough however people did give charity. I became the senior member of the society and I had the most responsibility.

"Doctor, what should I play with them ?" Walter came in and asked me.

"You don't know any game?" I asked.

"Not at all, I don't like these things" Walter said.

"Try playing hide and seek," I suggested, "the kids always like that."

"I'm not cut out for this," he sighed and rejoined the kids.

For the first time in a while, I saw them playing with such joy. We enjoyed the rest of the hour and eventually it was 8 pm. I did not want to leave, but sadly I had to. I kissed all of them goodbye when suddenly Andrew came running and hugged me.

"Walter is such a nice guy we want him here every day!" he said with delight.

I looked at Walter then back to him, "I'll see what I can do."

We walked back quietly and he drove me back to my house. As soon as I opened the door, I got bombarded with questions.

Jennie looked at me furiously, "Did you come alone?" she asked.

"I don't know how to drive, Jennie, will you relax," I answered. I drank coffee with Jennie and told her about today's events. We talked and discussed about our lives. In the end of our conversation Jennie said:

"Well, do you like him?"

"Who, Walter?" I set down my cup of coffee.

"No, the mailman," she said sarcastically, "Of course it's Walter."

"Not really, he's an asshole," I shrugged.

Jennie just grinned, "You like him, don't you, he's all you talk about."

"Maybe that's because he's important in my life right now, we're working together," I looked at her, " I can't fall in love with a guy I have just met."

"But you never know where romance will spro-"

"And goodnight," I interrupted her, "go back to your little romance books. All the clichés you want for me will happen in there." I walked back to my room to get some sleep.
