CHAPTER FORTY THREE
*not revised *
"You know that Charles' death was not because of me! I wasn't involved in any of it at all!" Walter yelled as his anger and anxiety were getting out of control.
"Either way, man, I just called to tell you that we might need some payback, you know, enjoyment," the guy on the phone laughed as the call ended.
Walter couldn't believe that those guys were after him once again. He had no idea what he would do if something were to happen to Laura. He was now beyond nervous and drenched in sweat. His mind was a dizzy, frenzied clump of brains as he struggled with his swelling emotions. All he wanted to do was make sure Laura stayed out of this; she couldn't get hurt if they didn't know about her.
At the reoccurring thought of Laura, Walter quickly grabbed his phone and dialed her number. He was biting his lip as he counted the seconds that passed until she answered.
"Hey," Laura said in her sweetly oblivious voice.
"Are you okay? Why weren't you answering my call? You know I got worried and you..." he said being a typical man trying to show his possessiveness.
"I'm alright, I was just in the operation theater working. Are you okay? You sound like you've just seen a ghost." Laura was in an oddly calm mood and her voice was as mellow as ever.
"I am fine. Would you like to go for dinner tonight?" he asked, blushing, not knowing how to distract her from the frantic rush of his words.
"Is that you? Mr. Ice Man asking me on a date?" Laura chuckled as Walter smiled in relief.
"Who said it's a date?" Walter said sheepishly, holding the phone in his right hand as he heaved in deep breaths.
"That's your defense? You were definitely asking me out." Laura giggled but Walter was too lost in his returning worries to reply to her.
"I'll be free at 8:00, that okay for you?" Laura asked again and Walter brushed away his thoughts for the moment.
"Sure," he said simply. "I shall be going then. Oh, and I got a message from Daniel saying that he is being treated well in his new school and home. I hope he adjusts without too much struggle." Walter told Laura who got a real shock hearing Daniel's name.
"Oh, Walter, please do give me Daniel's number; I want to talk to him," Laura nearly pleaded.
"Yeah, yeah, later. See you!" Walter said and ended the call. After taking a gulp of water from a bottle on his desk, Walter searched for a task to distract himself with. He knew this moment of calm wouldn't stay for long and now that Charles' old gang is coming back, he knew that he needed to pay them back before they hurt too many people.
Laura's POV
I got a call from Walter asking me out to a dinner which made me quite happy. Thinking, I realized that it had been over ten months since we got married. A lot had happened and Walter changed into an entirely different man. Not the guy who I met suffering from cancer and slowly dying. Even though sometimes he hid his emotions, I know a part of him still cares deeply for me. This was not the only change to take place in my heart.
I was happy for John and Ella that they were dating since Ella had given John a chance. Things were getting better but I was still worried about Daniel's health. Jennie was anemic because of her pregnancy but she seemed happy and cheeky all the time. Paul and Jennie were so perfect for each other that nothing in the world could pull them apart. Just as I was thinking of Jennie I got a call from her.
"Hello!" she said drearily.
"Hi! How are you, Jennie?" I asked in a soft tone in case she had a headache.
"I am okay but so sick with all this nausea and vomiting. I hate this state! You know Paul really cares for me but I am tired of sitting around and being stuck at home with nothing to do. I want to get back to my patients!" she sounded a bit sad.
"Its okay! Once you feel better you will be working again. Just relax and have fun while you can!" I exclaimed, glancing at a nearby office clock.
"Right, because there is so much fun to be had while curled over a bucket barfing." She sighed heavily then said, "Laura, I wanted to deliver a message from Stefan. Last night he told me that he needs to talk to you about the Cancer Society and some other important matter that he wouldn't tell me about. You better call him or meet him," she explained it to me.
"Okay I will! I'll catch up with you later Jennie, bye!" I hurriedly said and closed the phone. I wondered why Stefan was trying to meet me during the rest of my working hours. Once my shift ended, I quickly got ready and packed my bag and went to wait for Walter.
He was outside the gate at exact 8:00 PM. I smiled at him and rushed over, taking my lab coat off and getting into the car.
"So where are we going?" I asked as he started the car. He seemed a bit lost and his face was scrunched up and his body just as tense as if he was struggling to contain himself and whatever emotions he was trying to hide from me.
"A restaurant, of course!" he sounded a bit disappointed that I hadn't figured that out on my own. I didn't reply to him because of seeing him in bad mood. On our way to the restaurant and during dinner we didn't speak much.
"Walter, is there something wrong? You seem a bit...tense." I finally summoned the courage to speak to him.
He put down his fork and spoon and quickly cleaned his face and with a low voice he said, "I am fine Laura. I am stressed about my business; that's all." I knew he was lying by the way he couldn't keep his shuffling feet still beneath the table, but I acted as if I understood.
While we were talking about household items that needed repaired, my phone rang. Walter picked up my phone which was lying on the table and handed to me. Reading the person's name I swallowed and ignored it.
"Who was it?" Walter asked in curiosity.
"I don't know! Someone from the society probably," I replied, easily convincing him that it wasn't important. It was Stefan and I knew that Walter had never liked him so answering his call in the middle of our date would be a mistake.
"Let's go," Walter said as we finished our meals, leaving for home. As we walked through the parking lot to go to the car, I remembered that I had forgotten my purse on the restaurant table.
"Shit, I forgot my purse! I'll get it while you start the car."
As I headed back to the exit from having grabbed my purse I saw a small group of people crowding the doors. Stefan was one of the four!
"Laura!" he cried, seeing my face. My heart stopped beating for a minute.
"Stefan... What...what are you doing here?" I stuttered as I saw him with Hannah and two other lean built men.
"I just called, you didn't answer though. But it must be pure coincidence running into you here," he said in a peculiarly low tone of voice.
"My phone didn't have any charge, it probably died before I got your call," I said awkwardly. Shifting on my feet I added, "Actually I am in a hurry so I have to go." I tried to walk around them.
Stefan stepped in my way and gently grabbed my arm. "I need to talk to you if you don't mind," he was not letting me go.
"Call me later!" I said and quickly pushed past him, holding my purse tightly to my chest. I prayed that Walter hadn't seen the little exchange.
He was waiting for me outside with the car and opened the door for me.
"Stefan was here too?" he asked blandly as I began to sweat profusely.
"He was with Hannah! I don't know why, but we always seem to crash into him. It's such a weird coincidence!"
He looked at me and then with a smirk he said, "I hope so." With that he started the car and headed home.
Third Person: Hannah
"I have found every single juicy detail, madam! We have also asked those new people to join us. They agreed to the amount of money you offered to pay them," a man in a blue T-shirt said to Hannah while they were having lunch.
"Is that so?" Hannah asked, grinning as she sipped her coffee.
"Yes. I need more money to do this work though. Besides, our plan will begin tomorrow," the man laughed wickedly.
"Is the plan up to date? We better not get caught, and if we do, you will be the one paying for it," Hannah warned him.
"Don't worry about it! You just have to do your part and nothing will go wrong," he said, folding his hands beneath his chin.
"Oh trust me, I will do my part and more; don't you worry," she smiled, smug with herself.
Laura's POV
It was Monday and I had decided to go to a bookstore and buy some new books. After the security incident there was not a single day I would go without those guards but since they weren't there today I decided to go by my self.
The driver was nowhere to be found and I was feeling a bit cold since it was the beginning of November. I rubbed my hands and slowly heated myself up. I was still feeling sick and, despite doctor's warnings and knowing my own health, I didn't bother to take the medicine prescribed to me.
On the opposite side of the road two hoodie clad men were constantly staring at me. I noticed them staring at me with their hawk eyes but just decided to ignore them. That area had always been know for cases of robbery and murder but I decided not to think about it at the moment. I decided instead to go the park which was at a walking distance. I quickly got my feet moving and walked as fast as I could. Just walking on the road side I felt someone was constantly watching me. I was worried and tensed. My head felt dizzy and I decided to call my driver again. He wasn't picking up my call and I tried to calm myself.
I could hear footsteps behind me and held my breath. I wasn't in a state to walk more and so just stood by myself. There, I could hear the footsteps coming ever more near me. The two middle aged men surrounded me and before I could react the one held me still in a vice like grasp while the other stuffed a chloroform drenched rag into my mouth and over my nose. I kicked and reeled but it had no effect on them as my strength quickly left and I fell unconscious.
I woke with a severe headache and a cloth gagging my mouth. My hands were tied with a rope behind my back and my whole body ached as if I'd been beaten and I was feeling breathless on top of it all. Everything seemed blurred and I couldn't quite make out my surroundings. Twisting and pulling my wrists around I tried to free myself but it was of no use. I slowly managed to sit upright and my eyes gradually adjusted to the dark.
The room was a simple four walled stone storage room it seemed. Large wooden crates and steel barrels lined the walls and were stacked haphazardly in the center. There were no windows and a thick coat of condensation lined the cold walls. The only light came from a half shattered, bare and flickering light bulb which hung from its electrical chords from the ceiling.
Only inches in front of me a man was standing, staring down at me with his creepy, beady eyes. He was wearing a plain ski mask and had long, untamed hair. I'd seen enough action movies and news to guess that this wasn't going to be good. Two more masked men were watching me from where they leaned against a couple of rickety crates to my slight right.
Questions rang in my mind as terror clawed at my chest. Where was I? Why I was brought here? Who are these people? What do they want from me? I tried to move my head but was unable to. Gasping, I tried to speak but with the cloth gagging me I couldn't mutter or even yell.
"Well, well, well. Look, man, she is awake. Welcome to our humble sanctuary, my dear!" the first man laughed horribly and the other two men were chuckling. He knelt down and sat next to me. My heart was pounding and I felt certain that they were going to kill me. I shouldn't have come without informing Walter. This is bad now, I thought to myself.
"Are you in pain?" He saw me shifting with my wrists stiffened and rubbed raw from the all too tight ropes binding me.
"Are you enjoying yourself? Where is your Walter now? He is not going to come to save you again." With that he removed his mask. He had green eyes and sun tanned skin. I recognized him at once; he was the man who went after me when I used to volunteer with Walter before we were married. I recognized his face. The day on the beach Walter saved me and I was rescued but now I was helpless; there was no one to save me from these new waves. Tears were pouring from my eyes and all I wanted to do was run away but my ankles were just as tightly bound as my wrists.
"So you remember me, eh? Let's open your ugly little mouth so you can cry out for your precious Walter," the man spat as he leaned closer. He held my face tightly as he removed the gag. I selfishly gulped down as much air as I thought would calm me down. Once I finished hyperventilating I took a deep sigh and looked at him.
"Who are you? What do you want?" I asked in a loud voice. The man began to laugh wickedly and smirked smugly. He forced me closer to his face by yanking my hair.
"Who am I? You won't ever know! We will only spare your life once we get our desired amount from your man, that's what we want," he said, releasing my hair.
"Please let me go! Please, I'll give you all the money I have, but please just let me go! I beg you!" I cried and tears began to fall in torrents.
"Come on, baby! We know your husband very well and he knows us very well. He had an old debt to pay us!" his eyes glinted red with anger as he spoke those words, venom dripping from them.
"What...what...what do you have to do with Walter?" I said but he merely smiled again.
"Do you feel pain? Do feel alone? Do you hate being alone in this darkness? Charles, my brother, he felt all of those. He had gone through the same pain. But this is nothing, Laura! I won't kill you!" It startled me that he knew my name. Everything he said was now screaming in my already throbbing head.
He pulled a gun from the back of his pants and pressed it to my forehead. He pulled on my hair again. "At least enjoy the least pain we can give you!" And with that they all left and turned off the lonely light bulb, leaving me alone in the dark, cold room. I cried and cried but there was no way out of there.
Walter: Third Person POV
Walter was in his office working on an upcoming project. It was almost evening. Ella had gone to Germany for other international affairs for the company so Walter had to deal with her part of the company while she was away.
"Dammit!" he threw his pen at the wall and slouched back on the armchair. Thinking of Laura he decided to make a call to make sure she was still safe. Just as he was about to dial her number, Hannah came running into the office.
"Walter! There is an emergency!" Hannah rushed, trying to catch her breath.
"Is anybody hurt?" Walter bolted upright, placing the mobile phone on his desk.
"No! All of our accounts have been hacked! We don't know who it was, but this is a serious problem!" Hannah told Walter who began to fret internally.
"Shit! This is bad!" he cursed and ran to the lift without asking Hannah anything.
Hannah watched him go and quickly picked up his phone and kept it in her pale hands. She switched it off and a wicked smile grew on her make up covered face.
Laura POV
At least half an hour later the same green eyed man reappeared and, after untying my wrists, towered in front of me.
"If you want to save your life dial your husband's number and tell him to bring the money with him, he will know how much we want!" the man thrust the phone towards me.
"But...but..." I stuttered as he pressed the sleek black pistol to my forehead yet again.
"Do it! Hurry up!" he watched me closely as I dialed Walter's number.
Instead of ringing, an automated female voice said, 'The number you have dialed is temporarily deactivated,' and said this even as she tried again and again. Walter didn't respond once. She was clueless and was praying to pass the time.
"His phone is off," I said in a low, slow voice.
"Dial someone else and tell them to tell Walter to bring money or else? You know us? We are the biggest gang here and even the CIA can't get to us!" the guy said angrily as I shivered.
"But I don't know anyone else's number except for Walter!" I cried but he seemed beyond logical excuses and reason.
"You want to die?" The gun dug into the hollow side of my mouth. I couldn't think of anyone but for Stefan at that moment. He was rich, had connections, maybe he would be able to help somehow. I quickly dialed his number.
"Hello?" Stefan said.
"Stefan? It's Laura! Help!" The man quickly snatched the phone from me and threatened Stefan that he would kill me if he didn't bring the exact amount of money in an hour at the place where they were holding me captive; in an old and hardly used storage building.
"You're really clever, Mrs. Walter! That is why he picked you, I see!"
I was not sure how Stefan would bring such a large amount of money. But once he paid those assholes I swore to myself that I would pay him back.
Just an hour later they brought me out to another big area filled with even more crates and barrels, which was near the exit. Stefan drove up and I was praying that he had brought the money. He was standing right in front of me and just seeing him I started to cry. Tears were exploding from my eyes and I couldn't believe that he had actually bought such a large amount of money.
"Don't move till we say! Allen, you go and grab the amount from this rich bastard!" The green eyed man ordered to his men who went and got the money from Stefan.
"Release her now!" Stefan shouted as he smirked.
"Never knew Mrs. Walter has another Walter to come save her." The man smirked and pushed me towards Stefan. In a moment they ran away and I couldn't say or think I just cried. I hugged Stefan and cried and cried as much as I could.
"Stefan!" I cried, clutching his chest and crying until he pushed me back, slowly placing a kiss on my forehead.
"How did you bring the money?" I asked, wiping my tears.
"For now let's get into the car," he placed his hands on my shoulder and helped me walk to the car. My head was full of questions and yet I had nothing to say.
"Thank you, Stefan!" I said.
"You don't need to thank me."
"By the way I have informed Walter through Hannah's phone and he is really worried about you."
Ignoring the statement, I said, "I have no idea who those guys were!"
"I think they have something to do with Walter. But for right now you need to forget everything and relax. I am just glad that you asked me for help." He smiled as I smiled back.
Since Stefan drove so fast, we reached mine and Walter's house earlier than expected and found Walter biting his nails while standing vigil by the door. Just seeing Walter's face I ran over and buried myself in his chest. I cried and cried as he slowly placed his hands over my head.
"Where were you? I could have been killed!" I cried to him. His eyes seemed colder and I could see rage filling them. He watched Stefan closely and I was thankfully able to realize that something was wrong with him.
Stefan came near me and Walter and declared, "If you can't protect her you shouldn't be with her!"
"Its nothing to do with you! Stay out of my way and stay out of Laura's life too!" Walter snapped angrily. Stefan clenched his jaw and fists but managed to swallow his anger.
"Wait! Walter, Stefan saved my life! How can you be so ungrateful?! I can't believe it!" I snorted but before either of us could speak Walter stomped inside and I quickly followed him after giving another grateful goodbye to Stefan.
"How can you do this? " I asked Walter once we were inside.
"Do what?" Walter groaned.
"Don't give me that shit, Walter! My life was in danger! You know how scared I was?! Stefan saved me!" I yelled.
"Oh really! Did you even try to call me, Laura! The person who is dying to protect you doesn't even know where you were! You asked help from Stefan and not your husband! Wow! I know even if we are married you made it clear that this relationship is temporary for you!" he pierced my heart with every accusing word.
"Don't say that! I called you about eighteen times but your phone was off! And don't you know who these people are? Thy were from a big gang and they knew you and me. After trying your number I had no choice but to ask Stefan!" I tried to explain it to him.
"What? My phone was on all day!" In a flash his expression turned from red with rage to pale with fear as he took in the rest of what I said. "A gang?"
Walter was shifting on his feet now and sweat lined his brow. To myself I thought, 'He wouldn't be acting this if something wasn't... Wait, there is something wrong!'
