See You Soon

The next day, at noon Evan packed everything up and cleaned the kitchen out of any food that was left over.

Jessica got herself ready and was ready to head back home. She started to worry. Throughout the night, she would experience contractions but they were too far apart.

She would fall asleep then wake up to intense pain. They were an 45 minutes apart and Jessica could tell these were so different than Braxton Hicks contractions.

She wanted to be home already, in case she went into actual labor. Another sign that their baby girl would be here soon is that the baby had dropped.

Jessica could tell right away when she felt the baby lying real low and felt some pressure. She looked in the mirror as she brushed a hand over her belly. She had never seen her belly look the way it did.

Evan was busy making sure everything was put away and packed in the car to notice.

Once packed up and ready, they finally got on the road. Sarah's get together for them was at 2 pm. They had plenty of time to get home.

The drive was an hour and thirty minutes. Right away Jessica had trouble sitting comfortably. But she was able to not show how uncomfortable she really was.

Evan and Jessica were listening their mix tape and enjoying the ride. Well, Evan was.

Thirty minutes into the drive and Jessica gets hit with a contraction. Her grip on the steering wheel tightens. She breathes in and out and tried not to let Evan know what's going on.

Evan was singing along to You Make Loving Fun by Fleetwood Mac.

I never did believe in miracles
But I've a feeling it's time to try
I never did believe in the ways of magic
But I'm beginning to wonder why

Don't, don't break the spell
It would be different and you know it will
You, you make loving fun
And I don't have to tell you but you're the only one

Evan stopped singing once he noticed a change in Jessica. He reached over to turn down the radio and asked worriedly. "Jess, are you okay?"

Jessica nodded her head as the contraction passed. She was really concentrating on the road.

"I'm fine." Jessica said as she reached her hand over to Evan. She took hold of his hand while still looking ahead. "Evan...I'm going to tell you something. But you have to promise me that you won't freak out. Okay?"

Evan furrowed his brow but nodded. "Okay. I promise."

Jessica took a deep breath and said. "I'm having contractions. They are about 45 minutes apart. I've been having them since last night."

Evan's eyes went wide and it took everything in him to not freak out. He promised Jessica he wouldn't so he took deep breathes to calm down.

Jessica looked over for a second then right back on the road. "I'm going to be okay. It can still be hours before we need head to the hospital. So...when we get home, we will still go over to Sarah and Lily's for our get together. But I promise, if things speed up then we go straight to the hospital."

"O...okay." Evan was able to say. "Jessica, are sure you're okay to go to Sarah's?"
"Yeah. Remember what the Lamaze teacher said. That women can be in labor for days before they have the baby. So it should be fine."

Evan nodded and soon had calmed down. Jessica's soothing voice helped him do so and he sat back.

The rest of the drive was spent silently. The only thing putting Jessica's mind to ease was the music. She concentrated on the songs that came on and 45 minutes since the last contraction, Jessica experienced another one.

Evan watched worriedly as Jessica went through the contraction. Jessica for now, was calm and was able to just breath through the contraction without breaking a sweat. For now at least.

Once it passed, they were now a few minutes away from home.

When they arrived, Jessica suggested they unpack the car then freshen up before going over to Sarah's.

They quickly unpacked the car then went inside and put everything by the door.

Jessica went upstairs and changed into a blue dress. She fixed her hair and slipped on some flat black shoes.

Before leaving her room, she makes a phone call to her doctor. Her doctor tells her to just relax and when her contractions were 10 minutes apart, then they should head to the hospital. Unless something unforeseen were to arise.

Jessica asks a few more questions then hangs up with her doctor. She feels a bit better after speaking with her doctor.

As she stepped out of her bedroom, she gasped and leaned against the wall. This time the contraction was the most painful.

Jessica scrunched up her face, her eyes closed and she breathed in and out. She looked at the clock and saw that the contraction came 30 minutes since the last time. She wondered if her contractions were going to start getting closer together or if they would go back to 45 minutes.

"Oh gosh." Jessica said breathlessly.

Evan walked out of the closet having just changed as well. He rushed over to Jessica when he saw her leaning against the wall.

"Jessica!" He said.
Jessica breathed out one last time and sighed. "I'm fine. It's over. Come on. Let's go and try to have a good time."
"I don't know, Jess. Maybe..." he said.
"Evan, we have plenty of time." Jessica said calmly. "Remember, I promise if things were to progress I would say something."

Evan nodded then took hold of Jessica's hand. They walked down the stairs then walked out the door. Evan locked up the house then they walked over to Sarah's.

Sarah answered the door and before letting them in, she hugged them both and congratulated them for their anniversary.
Sarah then stepped to the side and let them in.

Jessica walked in first and gasped; her hands flew over her mouth and tears appeared in her eyes.

"Surprise!!!" Everyone said.

Sarah's house was transformed into a pink wonderland. There was a banner that said Baby Girl Peters Coming Soon!

Jessica turned to Sarah and Sarah smiled wide. "Welcome to your baby shower slash anniversary party!"

Jessica's tears rolled down her cheeks, but she had a smile on her face. She threw her arms around Sarah and cried into her shoulder.

Sarah smiled and held Jessica. She rubbed her back and said. "Hey, don't cry, Jess. Come on, wipe those tears away."
"I'm just so happy and grateful." Jessica said as she pulled away. "Thank you so much."
"You're very welcome." Sarah said. "But it wasn't just me who put this shower together. Lily, and Emily helped me a lot."

Jessica smiled and hugged Lily then Emily and thanked them for throwing her a baby shower to celebrate her baby girl.

Phil, Michael, Emma, and a few employees from the bookstore were there. Even Michael's parent were there. His mother had completely changed. She was much nicer to Jessica and Evan.

Although Jessica still has some anger towards Alice, she let it go for the time being. She wanted this day to be good day. So, she politely thanked them for coming then greeted everyone else.

Lola was right by Jessica, wagging her tail happily. Jessica finally greeted Lola and soon the baby shower/anniversary party began.

First they celebrated Evan and Jessica's wedding anniversary, then after some time, the baby shower started.

Throughout everything, Jessica would get contractions every 30 minutes. They would last about 30-45 seconds. She hid them well and the baby shower continued.

Jessica noticed that Emma had been quiet, so she walks over to her and sits down next to her.

"You okay, Emma?" Jessica asked.
"Yeah, I'm okay." Emma replied. "I was just thinking."

Emma looked at Jessica and continued. "Jessica...I'm scared. I'm scared to give birth. I know I still have a ways to go. I'm just entering my fourth month of pregnancy. But...I can't help but think of what's to come."
"I'm scared too." Jessica said. "I'm not going to lie. It's terrifying of what I have to do to bring my baby into this world. But I have to push through and just think that I'll get to meet her soon. And just think of the wonderful thing you are doing for Sarah and Lily. They've been wanting to be parents for a while but, it just didn't work out. Until now that is. You're helping bring them the child they've been dreaming of since they got married. You'll be okay, Emma."

Emma smiled through her tears and nodded. "Thank you, Jessica."
"You're welcome, sweetie." Jessica with smile.

Soon, games were played and everyone was having a good time. Two hour and a half hours had now passed.

Sarah took Jessica to the side to hide from everyone while she measured Jessica's belly with toilet paper.

"Do we have to play this game?" Jessica asked with a roll of her eyes. "I will smack whoever guesses way too big."

Sarah laughed and wrapped Jessica's belly. "Yes! We have to play this. It's part of the experience!" She said. "And, no you won't."

Jessica sighed and stood still while Sarah measured. Sarah was finished measuring then she started counting the number of squares of toilet paper.

Suddenly, Jessica groans and leans forward. Her hands on her belly.

"Jess?" Sarah said worriedly.

Jessica breathed through the contraction then stood straight up. She looked at her watch and sighed.

"I'm okay." Jessica said as she looked at Sarah.
"I, uh...I think I'm in labor."
"What?!" Sarah exclaimed.
"Shhhhh..." Jessica said. "I've been having contractions since last night but they were so far apart. Now it seems they are 20 minutes apart."
"Is that why you keep looking at your watch? You're timing the contractions." Sarah said.
Jessica nodded then said. "Sarah...I'm scared." Tears rolled down her cheeks and Sarah quickly put down the toilet paper and hugged Jessica.

Jessica quietly sobbed in Sarah's arms and Sarah tried to comfort her as best she could.

"Everything is going to be fine, Jess." Sarah said soothingly. "You can do this."

Jessica nodded then pulled away to wipe her tears away. "Sarah...I want to ask you two things."
"Okay, anything." Sarah said.

"Will you be in the room with Evan and I?" Jessica asked. "I want you there with me."

Tears formed in Sarah's eyes and nodded. "Of course I will! Thank you for even thinking of me to share this moment with you."
"Of course! We've been friends for years and you are like a sister to me." Jessica said. "Which brings me to my second question, oh! But of course this question is for Lily too. Can you call her over?"

Sarah nodded and went to get Lily. Everyone wondered what was going on and if Jessica was okay. Sarah eases everyone's minds and said they would return to continue the games.

Sarah and Lily walk over to Jessica and Jessica smiled at them.

"Lily...Sarah...will you be the baby's godparents?" Jessica asked.
Lily and Sarah both gasped and they said in unison. "Yes!"

They hug for a moment and soon they are back with everyone else.

"Okay everyone, take a look at Jessica!" Sarah said excitedly. "You all are going to guess how big Jessica's belly is by guessing how many squares of toilet paper she is."
"Please everyone, don't guess too big!" Jessica said. "I'm too hormonal to handle that." She chuckles a little and so does everyone else.

Everyone takes a look at Jessica then they all guess how many squares of toilet paper.

As everyone was debating with themselves about how many squares to guess, Jessica had the most painful contraction thus far. She cried out in pain and had to sit down on a nearby chair.

Everyone turned towards her and saw her breathing in and out. Almost everyone jumped up and asked what was wrong. Evan rushes over to Jessica and takes her hand in his.

"She's in labor." Sarah said calmly. "She's been having contractions. Jess, should we take you to the hospital?"

Jessica shakes her head no. Once she is able to speak she said. "My doctor said that when my contractions are 10 minutes apart, then I can head to the hospital. Until then, I should sit tight unless something doesn't feel right."

Everyone still looked on worriedly and Jessica smiled and said. "Come on, everyone relax. There's cake that still needs be eaten. Baby girl is becoming impatient." She chuckles and rubs her belly.

Everyone relaxes and the baby shower goes on.

By the end of the baby shower, everyone was used to Jessica having to stop to breathe through her contractions. Evan didn't leave her side. Also, Lola hasn't left Jessica's side since she had gotten to Sarah's.

Before they knew it, the baby shower was over and almost everyone had left.

Jessica sat on Sarah's sofa breathing through a contraction as Sarah, Lily and Emily cleaned everything up.

Evan of course right by Jessica's side. Emma watched on fearfully. She could tell Jessica was in pain. Her fears from earlier coming back ten fold.

"They're fifteen minutes apart now." Jessica said as she relaxed against the sofa. "I don't know how long this going to take, so, Evan and I are going to head home. We'll pick up the baby's gifts later, if that's okay."
"Of course! Don't worry about it." Lily said. "We'll help take them right over in the morning."

Jessica thanked them again for the baby shower. Sarah, Lily and Emily stopped what they were doing and hugged them goodbye.

Before leaving, Jessica said. "Sarah, Lily...when the time comes..."
"We will drive you. Just let us know when, no matter what time it is." Lily said.

Jessica nodded then she and Evan walked outside. Lola was following close beside Jessica.

Evan unlocked the front door and let Jessica in first. Jessica made her way upstairs to change into a nightgown.

It was 6 pm and too early to fall asleep, but Jessica just wanted to relax and try to get as much rest as she could. Evan locked up then made his way upstairs.

Jessica slipped on her nightgown when Evan entered the room. She got into bed and laid on her side. Lola jumped onto the bed and laid next to her. Lola placed her head on Jessica's belly. Jessica smiled a little and ran her hand over Lola's head.

"Jess, are you okay?" Evan asked as he walked closer to her. "Do you need anything?"

Jessica smiled a little more and motioned for Evan to come closer. She turned her body a little to look at him. Evan took hold of her hand and he placed a gentle kiss on it.

"I'm fine, honey." Jessica said. "I don't need anything right now." She sighed then said. "Our baby girl is almost here, Evan." She giggled happily.

Evan smiled wide and sat beside Jessica. He leaned in to kiss her lips then he pulled away.

Evan was still scared for what was to come, but he knew their baby girl was so close to joining them in the world. He placed his free hand on Jessica's belly. He felt the baby kicking and moving around.

He then leaned in a bit and spoke to their unborn baby. "Hey, Victoria, it's daddy."

Jessica smiled again then placed her free hand on top of Evan's where he was feeling the baby move.

"I hope you come out fast." Evan continued. "I don't your mommy in too much pain. So, if you can help us out that would be great."

Jessica chuckled and tears appeared in her eyes. She loved listening to Evan speak to their baby girl.

Evan places a kiss on Jessica's belly then said. "See you soon, Victoria."
