Saturday Morning

The rest of the week went on as usual. By Friday, Hank had brought all of the flowers that would be planted and soil.

Jessica thanked him and she went on with her day as normal. The only thing exciting was the release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Jessica was so happy how the release went.

The book flew off the shelves and Jessica was able to keep one for herself until she was able to order more.

The next morning, Jessica was fast asleep. Saturday's were her usual days to sleep in.

Suddenly, Jessica jerked awake when she heard the loud sound of a lawn mower. She looked over at the clock on her nightstand and saw that it read, 7:30 am.

Lola was now awake too, laying at the foot of Jessica's bed was looking towards the window, whining.

"What the hell?" Jessica muttered as she stood up from the bed and looked out of her window and down at her backyard.

She saw Evan on a lawn mower cutting her grass in the backyard. Jessica was annoyed by that for a few reasons. 1. It way early for her to be up on a Saturday and 2. Evan had obviously gone into her garage to get the lawn mower without her permission.

Jessica grabbed her robe and pulled it on as she rushed downstairs. She walked out the back door, tying her robe closed and rushed over to Evan.

Evan was casually riding around on the lawn mower without a care in the world.

Jessica was yelling at him to stop but Evan kept going. Even after he saw her trying to catch his attention. He only stopped when Jessica stood in front of the lawn mower with her hands raised, to stop him.

Evan stopped the lawn mower and turned it off. "Yes, ma'am?" He asked.
"What do you think you're doing?" Jessica asked in annoyance.
"I noticed your grass was growing super long and decided to mow it for you." Evan said.
"I didn't ask for you to mow my lawn. Also, you went into my garage without permission. You were only supposed to plant my new flowers." Jessica said angrily. "And you woke me up! It's only 7:30 in the morning!"

"I finished planting your flowers, ma'am." Evan said unfazed. "My dad dropped me off at 6:00 am. When I finished planting your flowers, I still felt bad. Again, I'm so sorry about your flowers that I ruined and just...I just really wanted to make it up to you, ma'am."

Jessica softens when she saw how remorseful he was. She sighs and said. "It's okay. I'm sorry for freaking out on you. It's just, I usually sleep in on Saturday's. I am cranky when I don't get enough sleep. I didn't expect you to be here so early. Thank you for your help."

Evan relaxes and said. "You're welcome, ma'am."
"Jessica. Jessica Huston." She said as she put her hand out to shake.
"Nice to meet you, Jessica Jessica Huston." He said as he shook her hand.

Jessica couldn't help but chuckle then said. "It's just one Jessica."
"Oh. Okay." Evan said with a smile. "I'm Evan Peters by the way."
"Nice to meet you, Evan." Jessica said.

They put their hands down and Jessica continued. "Alright, I'll let you continue your work. I'll be back in a few minutes. I want to discuss something with you."
"Yes, ma'am." Evan said politely.

Jessica raised an eyebrow and Evan back pedaled and said. "I mean, Jessica."
"It's okay." Jessica smiled. "Alright, I'll be back."

Evan nodded and watched Jessica walk back into her home. Evan smiled; he felt so happy that Jessica didn't recoil from him. She treated him as if he was normal. Usually people would make fun of him and turn the other way.

Evan's mood increased and he went back on the lawn mower to finish the job.

Jessica went back inside to make a cup of coffee and to shower.

She took a shower first then had her cup of coffee. Before going back outside, she looked out the front window and saw the beautiful flowers that had been planted. She smiled and was satisfied with Evan's work and was happy about her decision. She wanted to hire Evan as her new gardener.

When she went back outside, she brought Evan a glass of water. He was finished with the yard and was now waiting for Jessica. He was sitting in the shade where there was a patio table underneath a tree.

"I brought you some water, Evan." Jessica said as she handed him the glass.
"Thank you, ma...I mean, Jessica." Evan said with a shy smile.
"You're welcome." Jessica said as she sat down next to him.

Evan drank his water and he felt relief. He was grateful for the water. He was really thirsty after all the hard work but was too shy about asking for something to drink.

"Evan, would you be interested in being my new gardener?" Jessica asked. "If you say yes, you will only have to work on Saturday's. I need help with things around the house. My husband used to do all the "manly things" around here and..." she said getting sad. She took a deep breath and went on. "Anyway, would like to work for me? I'll pay you $40 for just a few hours."
Evan finished his water and nodded. "Sure! But, I have to ask my dad first." He said. "If he says yes, then yes, I'll be happy to work for you."
"Great! I hope he says yes." Jessica said. "Oh! But please, don't come until after 10:00."
"No problem." Evan said excitedly.

Since Evan was finished with his job, he asked to use Jessica's phone to call his father to pick him up.

After using the phone, Evan walked back outside to find Jessica. He found her underneath the tree where the patio table was. She was sitting down reading a book.

"Thanks for letting me use your phone, Jessica." Evan said.
"You're welcome." She said as she looked up. "Why don't you sit down and wait for your father?"
"Okay." Evan said as he sat down across from Jessica.

It was quiet for a moment; Jessica continued reading and Evan sat quietly.

"What are you reading?" Evan asked after a while.
Jessica looked up from her book to him and said. "It's a new book I just got in my bookstore. It's called Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. It's meant for kids but, I like to keep current on what's on my bookshelves."
"Cool." Evan said as he sat back and waited patiently for his father to pick him up.

"Maybe once I'm finished, I can let you borrow it so you can read it." Jessica said. "It's pretty good so far. I started reading it last night when I got home. I'm almost done with it."
"Oh!" Evan said as chewed the bottom of his lip. "That...that's kind of you."

Jessica studied his body language then asked. "Evan...do you know how to read?"
"Um...um...no." Evan replied as he looked down. "I don't know how to read."

Jessica was shocked but kept her reaction to herself. "Have you ever tried?" She asked gently.
"Yes. But my teachers at school gave up on me." Evan said.

Jessica's heart broke that someone would give up on Evan.

"Say, why don't I teach you how to read?" Jessica said. "I teach kids all the time at the bookstore. I can teach you every Saturday after you finish with work. I mean, if your father says it's alright to work."
"Yeah! That would be great. Thank you, Jessica." Evan said excitedly.
"You're welcome." Jessica smiled at Evan.

A few minutes later, Evan heard his father honking for him. He said goodbye to Jessica and said he would have his father call her with an answer about working for her. Jessica had wrote down her phone number on a piece of paper and gave it to Evan.

When Evan left, Jessica sat outside for a moment longer and thought about Evan. She couldn't understand why she had been so taken by him. He made her feel some kind of way but she couldn't place it.

She thought about how innocent, kind and sweet Evan was. Also. She thought how much of a hard worker he was and thought that maybe that's what it was about him that made her be drawn to him.

He was so different from anyone she has ever met and she was determined to teach him how to read and help him with what whatever she could.

Jessica thought that maybe she could be a friend and mentor to Evan. That made her feel as she had a purpose. Because before, she just felt as if she was going through the motions of living.

Jessica sighed then grabbed her book and walked inside her house where she spent the rest of her Saturday relaxing.
