A Day At The Beach House

It was Saturday and it was the day of Emily's wedding.

Evan was told the plan during the week and he was excited about spending time with Jessica. He packed an overnight bag and since Jessica lived near the beach, he packed his swim suit. He was hoping Jessica wouldn't mind.

Before they knew it, the wedding ceremony was over. Emily and Michael were now married.

They took photos outside the church with their families.

Jessica had parked across the street waiting patiently for Evan. Lola was in the backseat with her head hanging out of the window.

Finally after taking pictures with his family, Evan saw Jessica and smiled. Phil noticed Jessica waiting in her car.

Evan said goodbye to everyone and followed Phil. Phil had Evan's bag in his hand.

Jessica got out of her car as they approached her. She smiled and greeted them.

"Thank you, Jessica for doing this." Phil said as he handed her the bag.
"It's no problem." Jessica said as she took the bag from him. "We'll be back tomorrow evening."

Phil nodded then turned to Evan and said. "You be a good boy, okay?"
"Yes, sir." Evan replied.

Evan took his bag from Jessica and walked over to the passenger seat. Jessica then got into her car.

Jessica turned her car on then she drove away from the church. As she drove to the beach house, Jessica has her favorite music playing.

"You look very nice in your tux, Evan. Very handsome." Jessica complimented. "You're sister looked beautiful."
"Yeah! She was really beautiful." Evan said. "You look beautiful too."

Jessica blushed; she didn't think she looked beautiful. It had been three years since she had been called that. Danny would always tell her every single day how beautiful she was.

Jessica shook Danny from her thoughts for now and said. "Ah, thank you."

Evan smiled at Jessica then turned to look at the window. The rest of the drive was spent in comfortable silence. They listened to the music that was playing.

A few minutes later, Evan asked. "Who is this? I like how this sounds."

Can you hear me calling
Out your name?
You know that I'm falling
And I don't know what to say
I'll speak a little louder
I'll even shout
You know that I'm proud
And I can't get the words out

Oh ah, I want to be with you everywhere
Oh ah, I want to be with you everywhere...

"It's a band called Fleetwood Mac. They're my favorite." Jessica said as she nodded her head to the beat of the song.

Evan smiled and nodded along to the music as well.

"I have more of their albums at the beach house. We can listen to some after we finish with everything." Jessica said.
"Great!" Evan said excitedly.

Once they arrived at the beach house, Evan gets out and grabs his bag. Jessica gets out and grabs her bags as well. Lola jumps down and waits for Jessica.

Lola was a good dog and well trained. She didn't need a leash and always waited for Jessica's lead.

Jessica then locks her car then walks to her beach house. Lola and Evan were following close behind.

This beach house was a gift from Danny. Jessica and Danny would spend every weekend there. It was their getaway home.

When Danny died, Jessica would go occasionally but not as often as she used to. So she knew that the beach house needed to have some work done.

Jessica unlocked the door and entered the house. She told Evan he could change in the downstairs bathroom.

While Evan changed into some work clothes, Jessica wrote some things down on a list for Evan to do.

When Evan came out of the bathroom, Jessica showed him the guest bedroom he would be staying in.

Then, after placing his things away. Evan looked at Jessica's list. Now that he knew how to read, Evan was able to do his work without having Jessica tell what to do.

Evan was able to work better this way and he was glad for that kind of independence.

As Evan got to work, Jessica sat on her bed in hers and Danny's bedroom. She looked around and sighed. So many memories were held at the beach house and Jessica let herself get lost in them.

*A Year Before Danny's Death*

Jessica and Danny laid on their bed as they tried to catch their breath. They had just made love and were now wrapped in each other's arms.

"I love you, Mrs. Huston." Danny said.
"I love you more, Mr. Huston." Jessica said as she looked up into his eyes.
Danny smiled at her and said. "Not possible. I love you more."

Jessica blushed and kissed his lips. They kissed for a moment then pulled away. Jessica sighed contently and laid her head on Danny's chest.

"Jess...I was thinking." Danny said. "Maybe we can adopt? There are plenty of children who need a good home. Also, they need love and I know we have plenty to give."

Jessica chewed her bottom lip; she knew she was running out of time to ever have a baby and she was getting to the point of giving up.
She thought that maybe Danny made a good point. Adoption would be the next best option for them to take so they could finally have their family they've always dreamed of.

Jessica and Danny have been trying for so long since getting married to have children of their own. Nothing was working and finally Jessica made up her mind.

"Okay. Adoption sounds great. Maybe...maybe we can adoption two kids." Jessica smiled thinking of having a boy and girl.
"Yeah?" Danny said sounding hopeful.

Danny had been trying for so long to talk Jessica into adoption and for so long Jessica was against adoption. He was happy to hear her change her mind.

"Yes!" Jessica exclaimed. "Let's go for it!" She giggled.
"Oh, Jess! I can't wait to start this new chapter with you." Danny said with a huge smile.

Jessica saw how happy Danny was and she was even more into adoption.

Danny pulled Jessica on top of him and kissed her passionately. They then once again made love.

Jessica tears rolled down her cheeks as she came back to the present. She then placed a hand on her belly, feeling so empty.

That was their miracle baby. A baby they've been praying for. The child they had been dreaming of was long gone now.

"I'm so sorry I couldn't keep our baby safe." Jessica said as she looked at a photo of herself and Danny, that was placed near her nightstand. "We would've been so happy."

Jessica cried for a few minutes then she got herself together. She didn't want Evan to know she had been crying.

She gathered herself and now was in the kitchen making herself and Evan something to eat. She decided to have a picnic on the beach. She needed to be outside for a while and away from the memories.

After his work, Evan came inside the house and Jessica told him if he wanted to, he could go swimming in the ocean.

Evan was excited and he quickly went to go change. Jessica gathered everything they would need in a picnic basket then she grabbed a blanket.

Evan came out in his swimming trunks and a towel over his shoulder. His shirt was off.

Jessica tried not stare; Sarah was right. Evan did have some nice muscles and a six pack from all the hard work he does in construction.

Jessica blushed a little then said. "Alright. Let's go!"
"Wait!" Evan said. "Aren't you going to change?"

Jessica hasn't changed into a bathing suit and she was just dressed casually.

"No. I wasn't planning on swimming." Jessica said as she moved to go outside.
Evan stepped in front of her and said. "Why? You live by the beach! Why wouldn't you take advantage of that?"

Jessica hasn't been to ocean since everything that happened and she just didn't have the desire to enjoy what the beach had to offer.

"Come on, Jess! Come swim with me." Evan said excitedly. "It'll be fun!"

Jessica looked at Evan's face and saw how excited he was. She melted a little and said. "Fine. I'll go change. Here..." she placed the picnic basket in Evan's hands and blanket. "Go pick a spot and I'll be right out."
"Great! See you out there." Evan said he walked out the back door.

Jessica smiled a little then sighed. She walked back to her bedroom to change into her bathing suit. It was a black one piece bathing suit.

She grabbed a towel then her robe. She pulled her robe on and tied it shut. She then walked out the back sliding door.

She spotted Evan a few feet away and walked towards him. When she walked up to him, Evan smiled and said. "Let's swim, first. Then we'll eat. Mom, said not to swim on a full stomach."

Jessica nodded. Evan ran into the ocean and yelled in excitement. Jessica's smile returned.

Jessica untied her robe then placed it next to the picnic basket. She tied her hair back in a ponytail then she ran into the ocean.

She dived once she got deep enough then emerged from the water feeling much lighter.

She didn't know why she felt this way but it was welcoming. Maybe it was a way of the ocean washing away some of Jessica's heartache.

Evan cheered and as time went on, Evan and Jessica began to splash each other with water in a water fight.

Evan laughed and that just made Jessica laugh as well. It was a laugh that hadn't been heard in three years.

"See, Jessica!" Evan said as they settled down. "I told you, you would have fun!"
"You did!" Jessica chuckled. "Thank you, Evan."
"You're welcome." Evan said with a triumphant smile.

After some time, Jessica and Evan got out of the water and dried off.

Jessica was feeling so much better than she had in years. She didn't know why, maybe it was Evan's innocent and sweet personality. Maybe it was just the fact that she finally let go and gave herself permission to have some fun.

Jessica pulled her robe back on and Evan pulled on a T-shirt.

They sat down and Jessica began to work on a bonfire. The sun was setting so Jessica got to work.

After lighting the fire, Jessica passed out their sandwiches and they began to eat. They ate in comfortable silence and after, Jessica took out supplies to make s'mores.

Once they got settled and both of them were holding their marshmallows over the flames, Evan said. "Jessica? When you got married to your husband, did you have to leave your family? You had to move in with him?"

Jessica smiled softly as she thought about Danny. "Yes. Once we got married, I moved out of my parents house and moved in with him." She said.
Evan sighed silently. "Yeah. Just like Emily. She's moving in with Michael. Mama said that's what's supposed to happen when you get married." He said sadly.
"Don't be so sad, Evan." Jessica said soothingly. "Emily will visit and things will be okay."

Evan nodded then checked his marshmallow. It still wasn't as he preferred so he put it back towards the flames.

After a quiet moment, Evan voiced something that had been bothering him.

"Michael's parents didn't want me at the reception party." He said.
Jessica looked at him, surprised that he knew the truth. "No, they didn't." She said truthfully.

Evan nodded knowingly. "People are uncomfortable with me because I'm different and slow. They think I won't act right in public but I do. Sure sometimes I get overwhelmed and it gets to be too much. But usually Mom or dad will take me to the side to calm myself down. I guess they just thought it would be easier that I stayed with you."

"I'm sorry, Evan." Jessica said.
"No, it's okay. I'm glad I am here with you. I can tell I don't make you uncomfortable." Evan said as they both take their marshmallows off the fire.

They begin to make their s'mores and Evan continues. "Thank you, Jessica for treating me as if I'm normal. Thank you for not treating me like a child like most people do. I appreciate that very much."
Jessica smiled at him and said. "It's no problem, Evan. People just need to get to know you better and treat you better."

"Do you want to know what happened to me?" Evan asked as he took a bite of his s'more.
"Sure. If you feel comfortable telling me." Jessica replied.

They take a few bites of their s'mores then Evan begins to tell Jessica his story. He felt so comfortable telling Jessica what happened.

"My mom told me, that when I was a baby. I think she said I was five months old...." he said.
"...She said that one night, just like any other night since I came home from the hospital, mom was feeding me my bottle. She and dad then put me to bed in a bassinet that was right by their bed. I fell asleep and they went to bed. My mom said she woke saying she had a bad feeling. She got out of bed to check on me. When she did, she said I was the color blue. She woke my dad up and he called 911. When they got me to the hospital, the doctors worked on me. I was dead by that time, but somehow the doctors were able to restart my heart. They called what happened me called SIDS. They said I was lucky because not all babies come back from that." He paused for a moment then continued. "It wasn't until later that my mom and dad found out that I was slower than most kids my age. I was always behind in hitting my milestones. They said because I was without oxygen for so long, my brain was damaged. That's why I am the way I am."

Jessica had tears rolling down her cheeks. She couldn't believe Evan had died but she was glad he was here with her now.

"Don't cry, Jess." Evan said as he reached over to wipe her tears away. He pulled his hand away once he knew what he was doing. He got embarrassed. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you cry."
"No, no it's okay." Jessica said as she wiped the remaining tears away. "Thank you for sharing that with me. I'm crying because, yes I'm sad that happened to you, but I'm also happy that you are still here." Evan smiled at Jessica and she at him.

After a few seconds, they go back to making more s'mores.

It was now nearing 9 pm when they finally went back inside. They both took showers to get the sand off of them.

Jessica then gathered their wet swim suits and towels and put them in the washing machine.

They then changed into pajamas and sat in the living room enjoying a cup of tea.

Jessica put on some more Fleetwood Mac and Evan enjoyed their music. He kept saying how he had found his new favorite band.
Jessica chuckled and was proud to get someone else into Fleetwood Mac.

After listening to two albums, they finally went to bed.

The next evening, they returned back home. Jessica made a quick stop at her home to drop off her things and Lola.

Then she drove Evan to his house. Jessica pulled in and noticed there seemed to be no one home.

"Are you sure someone is home?" She asked Evan.
"Oh yeah I'm sure." He said. "Dad probably went to the grocery store and mom is probably in the kitchen."

Evan then ran in first into the house with Jessica following him inside.

"Mom! We're home!" He yelled out.

There was no answer.

He walked into the kitchen while Jessica waited in the living room.

When Evan came back from the kitchen he said nervously and wringing his hands together. "Mom is resting. But, she must have been really sleepy to rest on the floor."

Jessica looked at him with wide eyes. She gasped then ran to the kitchen.
