Love in Short is so many things that we can never grasp.
"To photograph is to hold one's breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It's at that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy." - Henri Cartier-Bresson
Love in many ways can be exactly like a photograph.
**********
She was sitting in her usual booth sipping the finest red wine as the waiter brought out her food. She smiled simply with her full rose red lips. Beginning to eat and scratch out notes on her notepad when a boy walks up to her table. He draws back the the think red drapes that surround her table and takes a seat across from her.
As she looks up she notices his blonde hair and blue eyes. He grins devilishly and introduces himself as Jake. She looks back down at her food as if he hadn't said a word.
"Hello miss, my name is Jacob, I seem to be lost can you help me?" he asks politely smiling with every word.
"Not this again." She starts attempting to gain the attention of a passing waiter, but they act as if she isn't even there. Finally she grabs a man's arm and whispers "Seriously this isn't funny anymore."
"What are you referring to Miss Elizabeth?" The waiter asks perplexed.
"Setting me up with any guy. I know my father wants me married off, but this is an all time low. Where did you even find this one, on the streets?" she flusters as her voice grows in volume with the last question.
"Pardon me Miss Elizabeth, but I have customers to attend to. I do not know this man. It was not my doing." The waiter states before nudging her and whispering "but he does appear very nice. I would give him a chance if I were you," he laughs before running off.
"Well then it must be a good thing that you are not me, Joseph!" she yells as the man flees from the scene.
"Excuse me sir?" Jacob points as a waiter passes by.
"Yes my good lad?" The waiter says smiling from Miss Elizabeth to Jake.
"May I have what she's having?"
"That is a special dish... We do not even-"
"Just give him the dish Mario. I will clear it with the chef later." Miss Elizabeth interrupts, giving Jake a good look up and down for the first time that evening. He is dressed in a plain black tuxedo without a tie, his slightly upkept blonde hair getting into his eyes as he smiled a pearly grin.
"Yes ma'am.... Right- right away." the waiter stutters stunned by her words.
"So what did you say your name was?" Elizabeth enticed.
"Jacob Edmonds, and what is your name miss?" His smile becoming cheeky.
"Elizabeth."
"Elizabeth what?"
"Miss Elizabeth Pierrantè."
"Fancy." Jake says as the waiter brings out the dish and a second glass.
Elizabeth nods to the waiter stiffling a giggle with her napkin. The boy and her start talking more and more as the bottle grows emptier. As they finish their meal, the waiter takes the plates quickly as Jake gets up as if to leave. Elizabeth grabs his wrist and tugs him down to sit beside her. He smiles and opens his mouth to speak. But before he can say a word he realizes Elizabeth is still holding his hand.
His smile grows as she pulls away quickly. He asks what is wrong to which she replies nothing and scoots a little closer to him. He talks about his parents and how he was raised as she just sits and listens. After a while they're sitting with their legs brushing against another and holding hands. He leans in and kisses her before she can move away.
When he pulls back to apologize Elizabeth kisses him back. She draws her curtains closed as they continue to kiss. It is now that he notices her skin tight knee length red rose velvet dress with a dipping front. As the kiss grows deeper she flips on top of his lap.
"Jacob Edmonds! Now what is it that you think you are doing young man!" A woman's voice shrills. Elizabeth stops and returns to her seat beside him as his cheeks flush a bright red.
"Oh hey mom... I was just looking for you." Jacob starts but the woman now presumed to be his mother cuts him off.
"Ma'am I hope my son hasn't.... Wait are you?" she says turning to Elizabeth.
"Am I what ma'am?" Elizabeth asks reapplying her red lipstick.
"Miss Elizabeth Pierranté? Daughter of Vince Pierranté and Vanessa Von Strauss?" her voice growing higher in pitch with each word as if marveling at a mysterious beauty.
"Yes ma'am."
"Doesn't your father own and cook in this very building?"
"Yes ma'am."
"Jacob, where are your manners. I raised you better than this." she says slapping the boys cheek lightly.
"He was simply keeping me company ma'am. And I quite enjoy his company if you don't mind my saying so."
"Well hunny, I'm sure they would like to get back to their meal and we need to get home." A man said walking up behind the woman.
"Jacob, aren't you coming?" she said turning from her son. With her words Jake stood and followed his parents down the stairs and out of the restaurant.
Elizabeth sat at the table wondering why of all boys him? The next thought to cross her mind was how much she would hate herself if she let a boy like that get away. She quickly stood and rushed down the stairs after him. Only to get outside and realize she was too late. That he was now gone forever and her love had ended just as swiftly as it began.
