Chapter 7: Shopping spree and family ties
The afternoon sun filtered through the boutique's glass windows, illuminating rows of delicate fabrics and shimmering accessories. Lila moved between the racks of dresses, her fingers trailing along the soft materials, her mind drifting back to the park that morning.
Evan's voice, low and honest, echoed in her thoughts. The way he had opened up, the small cracks in his carefully constructed armor—it lingered with her. She wasn't sure what to make of it, but it left her feeling lighter.
Beside her, Maya flitted through the store like a whirlwind, holding up a sequined jacket before cringing dramatically and moving on.
"Alright, Miss Mystery," Maya said suddenly, breaking Lila's reverie. "What's with the dazed look? Spill!"
Lila blinked, startled. "What do you mean?"
"Oh, come on," Maya said, smirking as she leaned on a rack of dresses. "You've been off in dreamland ever since I met you here. Is it work? Or... something else?"
Lila hesitated, unsure how much to share. "It's nothing," she said lightly, picking up a scarf and examining its fringe.
Maya raised a skeptical eyebrow. "Sure, and I'm the Queen of England. Out with it, Lila."
A smile tugged at Lila's lips despite herself. "It's... complicated," she said finally.
Maya straightened, her eyes narrowing with interest. "Complicated? Now we're getting somewhere."
"It's nothing like you're imagining," Lila said quickly. "We talked, that's all."
"We?" Maya prompted, a sly grin forming. "Who's we?"
Lila sighed. "Evan."
Maya froze for a beat before dramatically clutching a nearby mannequin. "You mean Evan Drexler? Our stone-cold, terrifying CEO?"
"He's not terrifying," Lila said, laughing softly.
"Excuse me," Maya said, holding up a finger. "He terrifies me. And everyone else. Except, apparently, you."
"It wasn't like that," Lila insisted. "It was... different."
Maya's eyes sparkled. "Different how?"
Lila hesitated, trying to put the morning into words. "He's... not what I thought," she admitted. "There's more to him than I realized."
Maya tilted her head, studying her. "Huh. That's interesting."
"What is?"
"You've got that look," Maya said, gesturing vaguely at Lila's face.
"What look?"
"The one that says you're thinking about someone a lot more than you want to admit," Maya teased. "And you don't hate it."
Lila rolled her eyes. "You're imagining things."
"Am I?" Maya countered, a knowing grin spreading across her face.
Their conversation was interrupted by the sound of a car horn outside. Maya's attention shifted to the window, her eyes widening.
"Oh my God," she whispered, her voice suddenly low.
"What is it?" Lila asked, glancing up from the scarf she'd been holding.
Maya didn't respond immediately. She was staring out the boutique's window, her expression somewhere between disbelief and giddy excitement.
"Is that...?" Maya trailed off, pointing toward a figure across the street.
Lila followed her gaze to a man leaning casually against a lamppost. He was tall and lean, dressed in a well-fitted coat with his hands tucked into his pockets. A baseball cap and sunglasses obscured most of his face, but there was an unmistakable air of quiet confidence about him.
"Who is he?" Lila asked, frowning slightly.
Maya turned to her, her voice barely a whisper. "Remember the guy I told you about? From the coffee shop? British accent, dreamy eyes, international non-profit?"
Lila vaguely remembered Maya's excited retelling of a chance encounter. "You think that's him?"
"I know it is," Maya said, her voice trembling with excitement.
Before Lila could say another word, Maya was already heading for the door, her heels clicking against the polished boutique floor.
Lila watched from the window as Maya approached the man, her steps hesitant but purposeful. The man looked up as she reached him, a broad grin spreading across his face. He removed his sunglasses, revealing piercing blue eyes that lit up as Maya spoke.
Lila smiled to herself, warmth blooming in her chest at the sight of Maya's obvious delight. She started to head for the door, wanting to meet the man her friend had been raving about, but as she stepped outside and got a closer look, something clicked.
"Oliver?" she called, her voice tinged with disbelief.
The man turned at the sound of her voice, his grin widening. "Lila!"
In a flash, Oliver was pulling her into a bear hug, lifting her off the ground with ease.
"Wait, what?" Maya stammered, her eyes darting between them. "You two know each other?"
"Oh, I'd say so," Oliver said with a laugh, setting Lila down. "She's my cousin."
Maya's jaw dropped. "Cousin?!"
"The one and only," Lila confirmed, still laughing.
Maya stared at him, her cheeks flushed. "Lila, you never told me you had a cousin this... this... handsome!"
Oliver grinned. "Flattery will get you everywhere."
By the time evening rolled around, the trio found themselves seated in a cozy Italian restaurant, the warm glow of candlelight bouncing off the rustic brick walls. Over plates of pasta and glasses of wine, Oliver filled them in on his spontaneous decision to trade London for New York.
"It's not forever," he admitted, leaning back in his chair. "Just needed a change of scenery."
"Well, I for one am thrilled you're here," Maya said, her smile radiant.
Oliver winked at her, lifting his glass in a silent toast.
Lila sat back, watching the two of them with quiet amusement. For once, the chaos of her own life felt distant, replaced by the simple joy of connection.
