Chapter Twenty Five - Trying Normal
Ross had gone to Trenwith and I had gone into the woods, in the woods that separated the lands was an old rock formation. This was the secret place between my nephew and i to exchange letters. I look around then removed the loose one we used. Smiling I removed my nephew's correspondence. I stick it in my pocket to read later then make the walk to Killewarren.
"I hope I'm not intruding?" I say as In enter seeing Caroline and Dwight.
"Not at all. You saved Dwight from his worst nightmare. Cards." Caroline whisked over to me taking my hands.
"How is the patient?" I ask in general to either him or Caroline.
"Impatient and often delirious. Keeps babbling about rejoining the navy." she let go and stepped back to Dwight's side.
"That is my profession. And when I'm recovered..." Caroline cut him off.
"Scold him Abigail. As if he were not needed here by his wife. And has not earned the life of quiet luxury. To be enjoyed to the full once our marriage becomes public." she looked up to him in anticipation.
"Is Drake recovering?" he asked
"He is, though too quick for Demelza. When he's better he means to leave." I answer with a sad smile.
"I understand. His love his lost. A clean slate seems the only option." Dwight sounded like he knew the feeling.
"But in your case, my love, it was a dreadful mistake. See what it lead to? And hope is never as dead as one fears. Nor marriage between two classes impossible. You and Ross, Dwight and I. Are we not proof of that?" she wondered taking her husbands arm
"Not completely impossible but don't include Ross and I, it doesn't help the point. Anyway. I have a message for you Dwight, from Henry." he chuckled, probably the first since the sea at the cove on his return. "He insists that his favourite Uncle visit him and his sibling and that his favourite Aunt Caroline take Rebekah Grace for the day because she is getting on his nerves." They both share a smile.
"He's beginning to sound a lot like you, Abigail." Dwight commented
"I know, Ross hates it. I find it highly amusing, especially when Henry's telling him off for being reckless." I laugh "It hurts my heart a little that he is quickly approaching his seventh year unlike..." I stopped myself and thought of Jonathan.
"Never mind. I will leave the two of you alone and Caroline try to go easy on your nursing role." I curtsy and take my leave. Ross had asked me to come by the mine so that was my next stop. I stood beside Sam and Drake.
"Gentlemen, Ladies. I give you our new mine Captain, Mr Zacky Martin." Ross declared solemnly
"Truly. I feel the honour keenly, known' who stood here before me." We all clapped for him then broke off.
"Demelza tells me you're wishing to leave. I'm sad to hear that. You'll miss it here and will be missed in return." I folded my arms.
"Yet I must go. When hope's gone, 'tis as well to know it." he replied
"If it is gone. I think nothing is lost until we make it so." I gave him and Sam a quick smile before leaving with Ross. The two of us go for a stroll through the market stalls I pick a few bits up for the children as we go. We stop bumping into Reverend Whitworth.
"Captain..." he fluster greets "You find me about God's holy work."
"I'm sure it's much needed hereabouts." Ross replies as I clear my throat in amusement. It wasn't hard to make the jump that this was prostitute territory where he was coming from
"Yes. It is my mission to bring the fallen women to God." he took the string of a reason and ran with it.
"Well, we all have our cross to bear." I smile. He scurries away leaving Ross and I to burst into laughter. When we calmed down enough and continued on our way, folks stopped to shake his hand or give him a clap.
"The honour to be allowed to walk along such a man and call him my husband. Basking in all his glory." he chuckled "What you did was no more lawful than breaking Jim Carter out of Bodmin, then you were a felon, now you're a hero" I say
"The Irony is not lost on me. How is Caroline and Dwight?" he wondered
"It feels like they're ill at ease. Dwight seems in his own world and Caroline tries to talk him out of it." I answered as we walked through the stalls.
"It's as I feared. In some ways, bringing Dwight home was the easy part." he commented as we carried on.
