To Love Her
I put Toothiana's present in my pocket, grinning. I finally found the perfect gift. It was a bit out of my budget, but Alex didn't mind lending me some money.
Toothiana knocked on the window. "Knock, knock." She laughed.
I smiled opening the window. "You can always just come in."
"I know." She slid in. "I'm just trying not to seem too eager."
"I thought I was the eager one." I nose kissed her.
She nose kissed me back and we flew to the palace. This time only a few fairies ogled at me, but only one smiled and fanned herself before flying away with orders from Toothiana. She turned to me, kissing my cheek. "So what do you want to do first?"
I looked at the setting sun, trying to remember what I planned. "Can we go the pond with the mural next to it?"
Toothiana nodded and took my hand, flying to the location. She followed me to the water and I placed a few small paper boats on the water. "That's so cute."
I smiled. "While it can float. The water will soak and sink the boats."
"It's still cute." Toothiana smiled at me.
I got on my knees and tried to poke one of the boats, but I slid and fell into the water.
"Damian!" Toothiana's eyes were wide.
I laughed and pulled Toothiana in with me. She immediately flew out of the water with my jacket, laughing. I pulled her in again and kissed her. She looked back at my jacket, which was now on the dry ground. "What about your jacket?"
I kissed her. "It's fine." I kissed her again.
She wrapped her arms around as I pulled us into the water. We shared intense kisses. All I could hear was our movement. It felt like Toothiana and I were falling in the sky in each other's arms. I started losing my breath and surfaced. Toothiana laughed, splashing some water in my face. I laughed and splashed water in her face. My eyes widened as she turned around and used her wings to splash a large amount of water in my face. The water pushed me back and I quickly had to resurface. Toothiana laughed.
I grinned. "Okay, you win." I climbed onto the dry ground.
Toothiana sat next to me, resting her head on my shoulder. I kissed her head and looked at the setting sun. I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small rose made of ruby and emerald. She gasped as I placed it in her hand. She sat up from my shoulder. "It's beautiful."
I smiled and pulled out eight rings made of ruby. "I, uh... I didn't know which finger you preferred to wear a ring on, so I bought a ring for every single one." I lowered my head, smiling. "Eight fingers, so everything except thumbs."
Toothiana laughed lightly and picked up a ring, placing it on her ring finger. She looked at her hand with a wide smile. "It's beautiful." She kissed me. "Thank you." Her feathers puffed as her eyes widened. She picked up another ring and pressed it to her head. She kissed it and placed it on her other ring finger. She smiled at me and held my hand. "I have something for you too." She took her presents, picked up my jacket, and we flew to an area covered with trees. She pushed a few branches out of the way as we made our way to a clearing. There was a small tunnel ahead and I was about to take a step towards it.
Toothiana placed a hand on my chest. "Wait here." She flew over to a large tree root and moved with bird-like movement around the root. She moved to another one and did the same. "Oh! There it is." She looked at me. "Close your eyes."
I smiled and closed my eyes.
I heard her wings move closer. "Now open them."
I opened my eyes and saw Toothiana holding a square box. On top of the tiny box was a gold tooth with the letter D engraved in it.
Toothiana smiled. "These are really the only things I can give you."
I grabbed the tiny tooth and smiled at Toothiana. I looked at the tiny box and she quickly placed a hand on mine.
"Don't open it yet." Toothiana's gaze locked with mine. It felt softer than normal.
My eyes narrowed. "Toothiana, what's going on?"
"This is a special gift. If you open it now, it'll be spoiled." Her hand became firm. "If you ever lose yourself, then you can open it."
Every inch of me stilled as if I was pulled out of my body. "What's going on?"
Toothiana stayed silent, simply staring at me with slightly narrowed eyes. She placed a hand on my shoulder. "I'm letting you go."
I blinked and stayed frozen for a moment. After a moment I finally felt myself breathe. "What?"
Toothiana flew back a bit, lowering her eyes. "I'm... letting you go."
I stepped forward, trying to hold her hand as she flew back. "Why? What did I do wrong?"
Toothiana flew back. "It's not you Damian. It's P-- It's me." She placed a hand on her chest. "It's me. I... I can't handle it anymore. I thought I could be in love and be the tooth fairy, but... it stresses me out." She took a breath. Her voice cracked as she began to speak again. "Some day, Pitch will find out and I'll have to choose between you and the children. I don't want to have to make that choice."
My eyes widened as I shook my head down at the floor. "I am so sorry. I didn't realize what being with me did."
Toothiana rapidly flew to me and placed a hand on my shoulder. "Damian."
I looked at her and we both froze.
Toothiana sighed heavily. She pursed her lips. It was clear thoughts were rapidly running through her mind. As quick as a bird, she looked down at the floor then at me. "Damian, I'm going to tell you everything." She took a quick breath. "I love you."
A smile slowly came across my face. "I love you too."
Toothiana smiled, blushing, then shook her head. "That's why I'm doing this. I don't want Pitch to ever come after you. I don't want you to ever be harmed because of him. I'm going to remove myself from your memories, so that Pitch will be confused if he ever finds you. I am also going to remove you from my memories, so that I will be sad and stop being afraid that Pitch will find you and take you. If I'm not afraid he won't find you."
I blinked. "What?... But..."
She placed a finger on my mouth. "I won't remember you entirely," she placed her hand on my shoulder again, "but I want you to be safe all the time."
I lowered my head, processing what was happening. "Toothiana," I held her hand, "I'll be safe here. I don't have to go home!... I don't want to go home." My breath felt heavy now. "I want you. Toothiana, I love you."
Toothiana paused.
I held her hand tighter. "I will always love you." I pulled her body against mine and kissed her. I kissed her for so long my lungs needed air, but I kissed her again. I kissed her again and again. When I felt tears between our cheeks I held her and kissed her. Eventually, I pulled back because I wanted to see her eyes. A tear fell from her eye. She was the one crying. I pushed back her feather and kissed her again.
My forehead touched hers. "I will always love you, Toothiana. I'll always believe in you." I kissed her cheek. "You'll always be my guardian."
Toothiana embraced me tightly, bringing her lips closer to mine. "You'll always be mine."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Toothiana had explained that once I got home the process would be complete. But as we flew to my house I could feel myself forgetting. I didn't remember where we just came from. I pulled out my phone and sent a long text to Alex.
Toothiana is going to delete my memory of her. Once I get home, I won't remember anything. I'm sending you this so you'll tell me everything I told you. I don't want to forget her, so don't leave out any detail. I'm hoping that if you say something or tell me everything I'll remember and find a way back to her. Please help me. I don't want her to go. I want her to come back.
I pushed the send button just as we reached my window. Toothiana flew in.
I looked at her. "Please don't go through with this."
Toothiana turned to the window. "I have to, Damian." She turned to me. "I'm sorry for this, but," she looked down at the floor. Instantly, she wrapped her arms around me, kissing me. I fell back onto my bed. "Damian," she whispered and kissed me again.
Everything became black, but I kept hearing my name. And then it began to fade.
