Chapter 1: Sandy Dreams

The next morning, Sandy did not wake up. I watched as more sandy figures that indicated his dreams formed. I sat beside him, watching as sandy stars and spaceships moved in an orbit above his head.

The sand figures dissolved as he woke up. He looked at me, and he smiled. I was so caught off guard, I blushed. He placed a hand on my head, and I instantly felt sleepy.

"Wait," I said.

Sandy simply shook his head, and he pulled me down next to him, forming a comfortable pillow of sand for me.

"I..." I closed my eyes, feeling strands of my red hair float on and off of my face. "I'm not sleepy. I wanted to talk to you."

Strangely, I heard a voice and knew it was his. "It's fine. I know you stayed awake all night to watch me. Dream with me, and we'll talk later."

I smiled as I saw a brilliant gold light. Somehow, I already knew I had entered a dream. The dream gave me a very surreal feeling that I was simultaneously in the sky and the ocean at the same time.

I turned to see stars fly past me to Sandy. He smiled and beckoned me to him. I swam as fast as I could.

"Watch," Sandy said.

Sandy moved his hands in a circular motion above his head. Clouds appeared in the night sky, and my tail turned into two legs. He grabbed my hand before I could look at him. We floated through clouds, and he looked back at me to smile.

I smiled at him, and he pulled me forward. We jumped on a cloud and surprisingly bounced. I laughed as we continued to jump from cloud to cloud. Sandy let go of my hand, and I bounced to force us onto a cloud. The force of the jump made me tackle him and we landed on another cloud, bouncing off more clouds until the force was weakened and we landed safely on a cloud. I smiled as I lied next to him.

Sandy smiled and sat up. "Did you always live where I found you and the mermaids?"

"A little. My sisters and I lived around that area. We just happened to be where you landed in the current."

Sandy nodded. "So how do you know it was that exact same part?"

"There's dolphins that rest there," I said.

"Dolphins?"

"Yes," I nodded. "They're animals that can hold their breath for fifteen minutes and love to play. They don't like humans much though."

Sandy frowned with furrowed brows. "I'm not understanding."

"The humans?"

"Both," Sandy said. "I don't know what dolphins are, or why they would be afraid of people." He paused and smiled. "Can you show me what a dolphin is?"

"How do I do that," I asked.

"Just think of a dolphin, how it acts, and what it moves like."

I nodded and thought of a dolphin jumping out of the water for air. A school of dolphins appeared, swimming past us. They were swimming as I had imagined, and they jumped through the air as if they were jumping out of water.

Sandy watched with absolute astonishment. He pointed at the one that jumped the highest. He looked back at me and smiled repeatedly. He clapped as they were leaving.

I took a hold of Sandy's hand, and I quickly swam after the dolphins, thinking of more animals Sandy might like. I thought of a giant whale. I thought of a school of sword fish I made them form different shapes. Sandy clapped after every shape they formed.

Sandy looked at me when we landed on a cloud. "These animals live in the ocean?"

"Yes." I nodded.

"No wonder you never leave the water. It must be so fun every day."

"It is," I laughed. "And there are so many different fish we discover every once in a while. It's... quite beautiful."

"What was your name again," Sandy asked.

"Agwe... It's a name that means water. I forgot where though... Its weird..."

"I like it actually," Sandy said. "It sounds really nice. Melodic in a way."

I smiled. "Thank you."

I felt my eyes close, and I woke up. I looked at Sandy, but he was still asleep. I thought of waking him, but I thought it would be better not to."

Maline swam to the shore and sat on the sand. My owl, Alex had returned since it was now night.

Maline looked at me with worried eyes. "You seem sad. Did something happen?"

I looked at Maline. "He likes sleeping."
