(TW: Mention of unconsciousness)

*Roman's POV*

I jumped out of the car, Anx close behind, and waved to my mom's.
Roman: Bye! Love you!

M and M: Love you!
I watch them drive away then hear running footsteps behind me.

Anx: Incoming.
I turn around to see Patton right before he tackles me in a hug.

Patton: HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROMAN!
I laugh and hug him back.

Roman: Thanks Pat.
He lets go and we start walking towards the school.

Patton: How's it feel to be fifteen?
I shrug, not really knowing what to say.

Roman: To be honest I don't feel any different.

Patton: Oh! I had an idea for the party tonight.
We stop at our lockers and get our books.

Roman: Oh? What is it?
He starts to speak but the bell interrupts him.

Patton: Oh shoot!
He starts going down the hall at full speed.

Patton: MEET ME IN THE TREE AFTER SCHOOL! I HAVE A SURPRISE FOR YOU!
He waves and continues running.

Roman: SEE YOU THERE!

Anx: I wonder what his surprise is?
I shrug.
Roman: Guess we'll see later.
He shrugs to and we head off to class.

Over the past few years, Anx started paying attention more in class out of pure boredom.
So now we help each other with my homework. All my straight A's lately have been a group effort.

Anx always double and triple checks everything and gets really excited when we get a good grade.
We were messing with an invisible ink pen one day and decided that we would put his name next to mine on worksheets.

That made him happy, even though the only ones who know it's there is us two.

As soon the bell rang Anx and I raced to the hideout.
Anx: HA! I win!

I lean against the tree, completely out of breath.

Roman: No... fair. You... can fly.
Anx only smirks at my tired state.

Anx: You just need to get in better shape.
I fake gasp, to his amusement.

Roman: How dare you! I am the manliest man! A man who is manly!
He laughs and smiles at me.

Anx: Sure you are Ro.

I stick my tongue out at him and open the entrance.
When we get down the stairs I see Patton waiting patiently on the couch.

Roman: Hey Pat!
He jumped but once he seen it was me he sighed in relief and smiles.

Patton: Sorry, I didn't hear you come in.

Roman: It's ok, so you have a surprise?

Patton: Oh yeah! Cover your eyes.
He jumps off the couch and I cover my eyes with my hands.

Patton: TADA!
I open my eyes to see a chocolate cupcake with red frosting and a gold candle sitting on the table in front of me. 

Patton: I know I already said it today but, happy birthday Ro!

Roman: Aww thanks Pat!

A and P: Make a wish! 

I laugh lightly and look at my two best friends, who are right next to each other smiling at me. Even though one doesn't know it.

I wish I can find a way to tell Patton about Anx. 

I blow out the candles and Patton claps. 

Patton: What'd you wish for?

Roman: Can't tell you, or else it won't come true.

He tries giving me puppy eyes but I avoid them by bringing the cupcake into the kitchen to split. I can tell by the look Anx has, he knows exactly what I wished for.

Roman: So what was your idea for the party?

Patton: What if we had the party here?
I debate it for a minute as I cut the cupcake.

Roman: Do you think we'd be allowed to?

Patton: Sure! Your moms are cool. 
I hand him his part of the cake.

Roman: Would your parents be cool with that?
He pauses before answering.

Patton: Yeah! Of course they would! I stay here by myself sometimes, so being here with someone else shouldn't be an issue.

I don't really know anything about Patton's parents. I've never met them, or ever been to his house. He seems really closed off about them, I try not to mention them too often. Only when permission stuff is needed. 

I stuff my half of the cake into my mouth.

Roman: Alrighty! I guess we're having the party here this year! I'll text Mom, she should be off work by now. 

Patton goes to get beanbags out of the closet and I text Mom while Anx reads over my shoulder.

*Texting* 

Me: Hey Mom, can me and Pat have the party at the hideout?

Mom: Umm, I'll ask Ma but I'm ok with it!

I start to set my phone down when it buzzes again.

Mom: Ma said sure! 

Me: Ma's off work already?

Mom: Ya, she took off early so we could go get you're ice cream cake

Me: Oh cool!

Mom: Once we pick up the cake we'll stop to get you guys a change of clothes and other snacks

Me: K, thx Mom!

Mom: No problem Ro. You guys cool with Oreo?

I look over to Patton who is currently setting up video games.
Roman: Hey Pat, you cool with Oreo cake?

Patton: Oooh yum!

Roman: I take that as a yes.

Me: Sounds great!

Mom: Alright, we'll meet you guys in front of the school in 30 minutes

Mom: Now we can finally see your hideout!

Me: Alright, see you then. Love you!

Mom: Love you too!

I walk back to the living room and plop down on the couch.

Roman: So Mom said that they'll be in front of the school in thirty minutes. She's excited to see the hideout.

Patton: Should we see if they can find the entrance? 

Roman: Sure, they'll probably find it a lot faster then I did. They watch a lot of spy movies.

Patton: It'll still be entertaining.

Roman: True.

Anx, Pat, and I are currently sitting at the tables outside the school. When we hear a car come to a screeching halt.

Roman: I guess Mom's driving.
We jump up and run over to the car. 

Ma: Until you learn to properly use breaks I'm driving Roman to school from now on.

Mom laughs as they walk over to us. They're holding two backpacks and a couple bags of snack foods. 

Mom: Alrighty, show us the hideout!
Patton and I take the bags and lead them to the forest.

Patton: We're taking you to the location of the hideout. You guys gotta find the entrance.

M and M: Challenge accepted!

We all laugh and I start quietly counting trees till we get to the clearing.

R and P: We're here!

They look around in amazement before actually looking for an entrance. They walk towards the tree and closely examine it. 

Ma: You think it's like the bunker in Gravity Falls or a branch lever?

Mom: Probably a branch lever. Which should be right about... here!
She pulls the lever and the door opens. 

Roman: Told you they would find it easily.

Patton: I gotta admit, that was impressive.

Ma: Never underestimate the abilities of the gay power couple. 

Mom and Ma high five and we all walk down the staircase laughing. 

When we get to the bottom Pat and I head to the kitchen while Ma and Mom stop to take in the surroundings. 

M and M: This is so cool!

Roman: That's what I said when I first saw this place! Now get over here before the cake melts.

Patton and I stick candles into the cake and Mom lights them. They all sing happy birthday and tell me to make a wish. I make the same wish as last time and we all eat a slice of cake. 

When Mom and Ma leave we put the extra cake in the freezer and go to play video games. Anx floats above us just watching, as Pat and I take turns playing Kingdom Hearts.

Patton: Hey Roman?

Roman: Yeah?

Patton: Is it hot in here to you?

I paused the game and looked over to see that his face was really red and he was fanning himself. 

Roman: Uhh, I'll go check the AC.

I walk over to the thermostat and see its on full blast.

Roman: That's weird...

Anx: Uhh, Roman?

I turn to see Patton unconscious on the floor.

Roman: PATTON!

I run over to him and feel for a pulse. It's there but it's really weak.

???: Tell your kid to call his moms.

I look up to see a slightly transparent guy in a black polo, blue tie, and glasses.

R and A: Who the heck are you?!

???: Oh, you can see me too? Interesting, and quite helpful in this situation. Who I am isn't important right now, call your moms.

I don't know who this guy is but he seems to be a ghost like Anx, who is currently frozen staring at him. I pull out my phone and quickly call mom.

*Phone Call* 

Mom: Hey Ro, everything ok?

Me: No! Patton just passed out!

There's shuffling before she answers. 

Mom: We're on our way.

I hang up and throw my phone onto the couch.

Roman: They're on their way.

???: Excellent. We need to meet them outside. Pick up Patton.
I give a look that says are you crazy?

Roman: There's no way I'll be able to carry him up the stairs and out through the forest.

???: I don't need you to carry him, just to hold him.

This man's insane.

He sighs and gestures to Patton. His eyes glow blue for a second before Patton starts rising off the floor.

Anx: You have powers?!?

???: Yes?
Anx is even more bewildered now.

???: I need you to hold him for appearance sake while I carry him.

Roman: Umm, ok.
We quickly bring him up the stairs and through the forest to meet Mom out front.

Patton starts stirring slightly in my arms.

Roman: Patton? It's Roman. We're gonna take you to a hospital ok?

Patton: N-no... no hospitals.
Before I have time to ask why, he goes limp and passes out again.

Roman: Is he gonna be ok?
The ghost sighs.

???: I hope so.

We hear a car pull up and Ma jumps out.

Ma: Bring him here!
Ma was a nurse before she decided to pursue her art. That's proven to be very helpful today.

I lay Patton in the back and as soon as the doors close Mom starts driving again.

Roman: He said no hospitals but I don't know why.
Ma sighs before putting a blanket over him and starts fiddling with something underneath.

Ma: I do.
I watch her intently as she keeps fiddling moving Patton up slightly occasionally. Eventually she pulls out an ace bandage and sets it aside.

Ma: Oh Pat...
She grabs and ice pack and puts it on his forehead, then checks his pulse like I did. She mumbles something then grabs a thermometer to check his temp.

I can tell his breathing as already settled a bit.

Roman: He's trans isn't he?
The bandage was crushing his ribs.

Ma: Yes honey, he is.

Roman: Why didn't he tell me?

Ma: He was afraid you would hate him. He was gonna tell you tonight.

I turn to the new ghost who has his eyes locked on Patton. Anx is still in shock but is following with what's happening.

Roman: Why didn't you tell me so I would know what was going on?

He adjusts his glasses unnecessarily.

???: It was not my information for me to disclose. Ask her if he'll be ok.

Roman: Ma, is he gonna be ok?

Me: He'll be fine, once he cools down and has some rest he'll be ok. We told him to tell us when he was ready for A binder and we'd get him one.
She shakes her head lightly and looks down at Pat.

Ma: But he's just too stubborn to ask for help.
She looks around a bit then looks at me.

Ma: Did Anx know?
I look over to him and he shakes his head.

Roman: No.
She looks confused for a second.

Ma: Then who were you talking to?
I look back to the other ghost trying to get a name out of him but he's still watching Patton.

Roman: Another ghost dude. I don't know anything about him yet but I'll ask him later.
She nods as we pull into the garage at home.

We put Patton in my bed, gave him a fresh ice pack, and left him to sleep.
Mom and Ma went to bed while Anx, the mystery ghost, and I go to the living room.

I sit on the couch, Anx next to me, and the new guy in front of us.

???: I guess an explanation is in order. Salutations, I'm Logan.
