Fifty three

Twenty seven years ago

Mrs Kim sat on a rocking chair busying herself with knitting while whistling silently to herself before the door burst open. She looked up as her excited son entered wearing a proud smile on his face.

He reached into his pocket and dumped a wad of money bills onto the wooden table causing her to gasp. She stood up slowly and walked towards the table. She touched the money with shaky hands and glanced at her son, shock written in her eyes.

"Taejun, where did you get all these money from?"

Her son smiled. "I made quite a lot of sales today Eomma. I'm a good marketer"

His mother nodded cupping his face with her hands and kissing his forehead.

"Indeed you are" she whispered and sighed. "But you work too hard Taejun. I want you to live your life like other young men of your age"

Kim Taejun rolled his eyes. "If I do that, who's going to take care of you? You are too sick to be on your own"

Mrs Kim shook her head. "I wish your father didn't die...If only I wasn't so weak"

She began to sob softly and Taejun wrapped his arms around her trying to console her.

"It's okay Eomma, I'm not complaining. I'm happy taking care of you. Very soon, you'll get better"

He kissed the top of her head and his mother stopped crying. He led her back to her chair.

"Eomma, that money is yours. I have to go now"

"Where are you going?"

Taejun scratched his head nervously "I have some errands to run but I'll be back on time. Please wait for me"

"Okay son" Mrs Kim said and watched her son leave. As he came out, he bumped into Nara one of his female friends and his mother's helper.

"Hello Nara" he greeted.

The girl blushed lowering her gaze. "Hi Taejun" she answered. He didn't waste any more time on her and quickly dashed off. Contrary to what his mother thought, he was into some illegal things. He met his group of friends at an old abandoned building. These friends were still the people who helped made him the man he later became. They where his partners.

"Hey where were you?" Kai said puffing out a cigarette smoke as he approached the group of four.

"Sorry, I had to see my mother" Taejun answered.

Lee pil no presented the 'items'

"We have only tonight left to make the delivery" he said.

Kim Dae Soo later Kim Namjoon's father smiled at Taejun. "What do you tell your mother you do for a living?"

The latter shrugged "I tell her that I sell coffee"

Dae soo chuckled "And she believed that?"

"She sure did. I have to find a way to buy her medicines"

Min Joon Jae later Min Yoongi's father looked thoughtful. "Why don't you just sell the land?"

Silence as Taejun glared at him but he continued.

"That big company...what's the name..."

"Parks investment and real estate"Kai answered.

"They are offering you millions of dollars just to purchase that land"

"To build a resort" Taejun said frowning.

Joon Jae scoffed. "What's wrong with that?"

"I've told you guys several times, it's my inheritance. I'll make use of that land after I have made my money but I'll never sell it to them. My mother doesn't want to sell and even my father would have been disappointed if I sold it"

Joon Jae rolled his eyes. "But you need the money"

Taejun smiled. "I have saved quite a lot of money to start off a capital venture. I just need some more time. Just a few more deals and I won't need to do this anymore"

Kai sighed finally "Okay fine, let's just go. The day is slowly fading"

They gathered their things and left. Back in the late eighties, it was definitely suicide selling drugs but the money they derived where endless. From selling of weed, marijuana, these five friends did it all. The deals where always quick and discreet, held in dark isolated places. Once they where finished and their pockets filled with cash, it was time to go home.

Kai held Taejun's waist. "How about we go home after this? It's being a long day" he whispered with a smug smile.

Taejun smiled. "Sorry not today. I promised my mother I'll be back on time. She will be worried about me"

Kai rolled his eyes. "Mama's boy" he said.

Joon Jae snickered. "Let him be Kai, you guys aren't official so you don't have any rights to him"

Kai glared at him. "It's none of your business"

Sensing an impending fight, Taejun sighed. "Look enough! I have to go"

He waved at them before slowly dragging his feet away without waiting for their response. He soon arrived at the house but he noticed the silence. He ran inside only to find the house in a distorted state, tables and chairs overturned and broken with pieces of broken glass on the floor. But it didn't hurt as much as seeing his mother lying on the hard ground all battered up and unconscious.

"Eomma! No!" he cried and carried her in his arms with tears running down his face. He rushed her to the hospital. Thankfully, she was saved and later regained consciousness. When Taejun saw her eyes flutter open, he breathed a huge sigh of relief and held her cold hands.

"Eomma, what happened?" he whispered.

"The Parks company. They came to our house" she managed to whisper.

The anger in Kim Taejun's face was indescribable.

"They did this? All because of a land?" he said tightening his fist.

His mother swallowed hard. "Look my son, don't bother about it. They can't take the land away from us"

Kim Taejun stood up "This can't do. They can't get away with this"

He began to leave and Mrs Kim reached out for him. "Taejun, where are you going?"

"I'll be right back Eomma!" He yelled out loud and ran out of the ward. He went to the Parks company to  cause a scene yelling to sue them all at the top of his voice. He created such a ruckus that security had to force him out.

The next morning at the south side, Park Hye sun walked into the company, palm sweating, teeth clattering. He was met by a woman who led him into the main office. He finally stopped and when he knocked on the door, he heard his father's harsh voice.

"Yes?"

"It's me father" he replied. There was no response which meant he could enter. He pushed open the door and his father grumbled looking at a piece of paper in front of him without sparing him a single glance. There was silence for a while, an uncomfortable one before he decided to speak. He cleared his throat.

"Em father, you called for me?"

The man finally looked up and smiled.

"How is your fiancee Yumi?"

He nodded. "She's fine father"

"I hope she's treating you really well"

He shrugged. "She's doing good father"

Mr Park sighed deeply before speaking again. "I called you because we have a problem"

"What's that father?"

"It's those Kims who have refused to sell us their land. In the act of compromising with them, my men where a little too harsh and hurt the female owner of the land. Her son came here yesterday threatening to press charges"

Park Hye sun took a deep breath. "Now, what do you want me to do about it?"

"I want you to get that land"

Park hye sun stared at his father. "What? How am I supposed to do that?"

His father frowned. "I guess sending you to all those prestigious school abroad should have a purpose now right?"

Park hye sun shook his head as his father continued without even glancing at him once.

"Besides you owe me for picking you up out of the gutters and making you the person you are right now"

Park hye sun clenched his teeth and bit his lips hard.

"I understand that...father" he whispered under his breath.

Mr Park nodded. "You better not fail me Hye sun. You are my last chance"

Hye sun nodded. "Okay father. I'll do as you say"

Mr Park handed him a document. "That is the home address of the Kims. I suggest you start working on it as soon as possible"

Hye sun took the document from his hand and started leaving knowing his father was watching him. He left the company and when he entered his car, he slammed his car so hard, his ears rang but he didn't care. He started venting his anger on his steering wheel.

"He doesn't spare any chance to remind me that I'm adopted" he said in a rush before relaxing his breathing after a while and driving off to the North side where the Kims lived. He was still so angry because of his father but when he arrived at the place, his breath hitched. It was beautiful with lush green grass and short stout trees. It was the perfect place to build a resort and now, he could understand why his father wanted this place.

He stopped then got out of the car and stood in front of the wooden gate with a painted sign Kims Dojo

He chuckled to himself "Kim's Dojo? What's that?"

Suddenly, he heard people screaming around him and shouting thief. He looked and saw someone being pursued by a man. He didn't understand what was going on.

"Young man" whispered a frail old woman beside him.

"What happened?" he said.

She pointed to his pant pocket

"Your wallet"

Hye sun panicked and felt his pocket. Empty!

"Damn it" he whispered to himself. He had been so occupied by the beautiful land scenery, he forgot he was in the North side mostly inhabited by criminals and vagabonds. The old woman laughed softly at him before she left.

Hye sun walked around nervously but suddenly stopped abruptly when he heard a smooth voice behind him.

"This is yours?"

He turned around and froze at the sight of a handsome young man with a boxy smile holding out his wallet towards him. It felt like time stood still, like there was no one else but them. It was a magical moment, something indescribable. That was how Park hye sun and Kim Taejun met unaware that in years to come, they would be formidable enemies but for now, everything seemed good. No, it was perfect.

Thanks for reading everyone. Luv you all!
