02. The Jenna Thing

After Alison's funeral, Aria, Hanna, Emily and Spencer sat together at the Apple Rose Grille.

"Why was Jenna there?" a worried Aria asked her friends.

"I guess she's back" Spencer said.

"That cop acted like we were suspects or something" Hanna pointed out.

"Do you think we looked guilty?" a worried Emily asked.

"Why would we be?" Aria asked, "We haven't done anything wrong".

"Except lie about the Jenna thing" Hanna reminded.

"We promised we'd never bring up the Jenna thing again, remember?" Spencer reminded, "It never happened".

"Have you found a way to forget?" a curious Aria asked, as Hanna pulled out her flask from her purse and started the pouring the drink in her coke glass, "I still wake up sometimes in the middle of the night".

"Aria, it was an accident" Spencer stated.

"It's medicinal" Hanna told an old man who was giving her a judging look, "Cramps".

"I don't get it" Emily said, bringing everyone back to topic, "How does A know something about me that only Alison knew?".

"Ali knew all of our secrets, but we never knew any of hers" Aria realised.

"I knew some" Spencer blurted out.

"Go on" Aria urged.

"Talk" Hanna demanded.

"I can't" Spencer protested.

"Spence, no, you are not gonna drop a bomb like that, and just clam up" Aria said.

"She'd so kill me if I told you" Spencer argued.

"She's dead" Hanna reminded.

Spencer let out a defeated sigh, "Ali was seeing someone that summer".

"That's not a secret Spence, everyone knows Ali was seeing Lo" Hanna retorted.

"She was seeing someone other then Lo" Spencer clarified.

"Ali was cheating on Lo?" a shocked Aria asked, Spencer nodded her head, "Did Lo know?".

"Probably" Spencer said, shrugging her shoulders, "But I don't think he cared".

"If he did care, doesn't that give him a motive to kill her?" Hanna pointed out.

"Are you insane?" Spencer asked, "Lo would never kill Ali".

"And how can you be so sure about that?" Hanna challenged, "Everyone in this town knows about his anger issues, what if he lost control of his anger after finding out about Alison's new boy toy and ended up killing her? This new cops number one target should be Lo".

"Forget that Hanna, I'm confused as to why Ali didn't want us to know about her second boyfriend?" a confused Aria wondered.

"Other then the fact that we might tell Lo?" Spencer said, "He was an older boy, and he also had a girlfriend".

"Who was it?" Emily asked.

"She never told me his name, she thought I'd tell Lo" Spencer replied.

"Okay, that's only half the secret" Hanna pointed out.

"Well it's more than what you ever got from her" Spencer retorted.

"How was that Ali told us nothing and we told her everything?" a confused Aria wondered.

"Because she made us feel like we were part of something special" Emily said.

"We were" Hanna confirmed.

"I miss that" a sad Aria admitted.

"Me too" Spencer whispered.

"I miss Ali" Emily admitted, playing with her name bracelet that was tied around her wrist.

"I can't believe you still wear that" Hanna said, seeing the bracelet on Emily's wrist.

"Ali still wears hers" Emily retorted, "Wore".

"When Ali didn't come home that night I knew something terrible must have happened but there was always some part of me that imagined someday she'd just show up" an upset Spencer admitted.

"Yeah, I used to think that maybe she'd just run off with some guy" Aria added.

"She was laying on a beach somewhere" Emily said.

"Or getting a tan out by the pool with that hot lifeguard" Hanna said.

"Ohh, yeah, what was his name?" Aria asked.

"Who cares?" Hanna said, "Save me!".

All four girls laughed at Hanna's impression of Alison, but suddenly their laughter died down when the Grille door opened and Jenna Marshall walked in, not wanting to be near her the four girls quickly grabbed their bags and stepped out of the grille and went in four separate directions.

Next morning, Spencer was in her backyard, practicing her field hockey shots, "Nice!".

After hitting her shot, Spencer turned around and saw Emily walking towards her.

"So I hear you're gunning for varsity captain" Emily said.

"Well, I have a shot, so" Spencer said.

"If a Hastings has a shot, she takes the shot" Emily teased.

"Is that a drinking game?" the girl next to Emily asked.

"Yeah, it should be" Spencer laughed.

"Spencer, this is Maya" Emily introduced.

"Oh" Spencer whispered, finally realising who Maya was.

"Yeah" Maya said, "New girl who moved into dead girl's house", Maya quickly shook her head in embarrassment, "I can't believe I just said that".

"Yeah, I can't believe you just said that either" Spencer said.

"I think Brad Pitt and I are missing the same sensitivity chip" Maya said.

"It's fine" Spencer assured, "We're all trying to find a way to deal with it".

"Um, Maya and I are going for some caffeine" Emily informed, "Do you want to join?".

"Oh, I'd kill for a latte but this is my only time to practice, so" Spencer said.

"Catch you later" Emily said, before walking away with Maya.

"She's intense" Maya commented once they were out of Spencer's ear shot.

"If you knew her parents you'd understand why" Emily defended.

"Will the following students please come to the office?" the principle announced over the school speakers, "Emily Fields, Aria Montgomery, Spencer Hastings, Hanna Marin".

"Good luck" Lo whispered into Spencer's ear as he stood behind her, immediately startling the Hastings girl, a chuckling Lo walked to his next class while Spencer walked over to her three friends.

"Wait" Aria called out, checking her phone that was beeping, "It's from A".

Hanna read the message over Aria's shoulder, "Dead girls walking".

The four girls sat on the couch in their principal's office while Detective Darren Wilden interrogated them about what happened the night Alison disappeared.

"So let's see" Wilden started, he pointed at Spencer, "You thought you heard her scream".

"I said that, yeah" Spencer confirmed.

"And when you three woke up in the barn Alison was gone, and so was Spencer?" Wilden asked Emily, Aria and Hanna.

"Yes, I woke up before them, and I realised that Ali was missing, so I--".

"So you went looking for her" Wilden finished Spencer's sentence.

"That's what happened" Spencer said.

"I got that" Wilden assured, "So, what's up? Was this a slumber party, or--".

"Is this an interrogation?" Spencer asked.

"No, just a routine follow-up" Wilden replied, "Why did you guys all fall asleep?".

"I guess we were tired" Aria said.

"Tired? Really?" Wilden asked, clearly not believing the girls, "Is that how you remember it, Hanna?".

Hanna nodded her head, "Yeah".

"Yeah, you guys were tired" Wilden repeated.

"Look, we've told you everything that we know just like we did the night she went missing" Spencer said.

"I know, I know, and you see the thing is, it's almost exactly what you said last year" Wilden pointed out, "Almost like it was rehearsed".

"Like Spencer said, we've told you everything we know" Aria stated.

***

"He knows we're lying" Aria said, as the four friends sat together in their school cafeteria.

"Lying is not a crime" Hanna stated.

"It is when you're giving false statements to the police" Spencer retorted, "It's called obstruction of justice".

"Oh, please! We lied about drinking" Hanna said, "But the truth that matters is we don't know anything about what happened to Ali that night".

"We also know about someone who might have wanted to hurt her" Spencer reminded.

"We should have told the police the truth about Jenna's accident the night it happened" Emily realised.

"I wanted to, remember?" Hanna reminded.

"Look, we had a chance to do more than just tell the truth" Aria said, "We had a chance to stop Ali".

"But we didn't" Spencer said, "And telling the police now about what happened to Jenna isn't going to make her see again, it'll just ruin our lives".

Suddenly a cane tapping caught Hanna's attention, she quickly looked in the direction the noise was coming from and immediately her eyes went wide in shock, "Oh my god, she's back in school too?".

Aria looked at Jenna and after a moment of thinking stood up and walked over to her, "Jenna? Hey, it's Aria, do you wanna come sit with us?".

"Sure" Jenna said.

"Okay" Aria said, taking Jenna's lunch tray from her hands.

"Thank you" Jenna said, placing her hand on Aria's shoulder and letting her lead her over to the table the other three girls were sitting at.

"So you're gonna be between Hanna and Emily and Spencer's right across from you" Aria informed, as she placed Jenna's lunch on the table.

"Thank you" Jenna said.

"Yeah, and here's a chair" Aria said, pulling a chair from another table and placing it infront of Jenna.

"So, this would be Alison's chair, right?" Jenna asked, as she slowly took a seat.

"No, we're not even sitting at that table" Emily said.

"You know, she came to visit me in the hospital after the accident" Jenna informed.

"Alison did?" a shocked Spencer asked.

"Mm-hmm, both her and Lo did actually, thought it was at separate times" Jenna revealed, "Everyone misunderstood Alison, but I knew exactly who she was".

"Why did Lo visit you?" a curious Spencer asked.

"Why don't you ask him that question Spencer" Jenna retorted, "I'm sure he'd love to answer to you".

"What do you mean by that?" a confused Spencer asked.

"Oh come Spence, everyone in Rosewood knew that Lo never had feelings for Alison, he was only with her so he can be closer to you" Jenna said.

Hanna, Emily and Aria looked at Spencer in shock, none of the girls knew that, while Spencer glared at Jenna, "When did you get back, Jenna?" Spencer asked, hoping to change the subject, "We heard that you were in Philadelphia, a school for the visually impaired".

"You can say blind Spencer, it's okay" Jenna said, opening her bottle of orange juice, "It's not a dirty word", Jenna took a sip of her orange juice, "Wow, it's so quiet, you guys used to be the fun table, what happened to you girls?".

The five best friends were in Emily's room, listening to music and trying out clothes, Alison wore a top and looked at herself in the room when suddenly an angry expression formed on her face, "I can see you!" she suddenly yelled, rushing over to the window, "Oh my god! I can't believe it!".

"Who was it Ali, what did you see?" a confused Emily asked, as the music in her room turned off.

"He was in that tree spying on us!" Alison informed, "I am so creeped out".

"Who was it?" Spencer asked.

"It was the perv, Toby Cavanaugh" Alison revealed.

"Are you sure?" an unsure Aria asked.

"Yes, I'm sure!" Alison stated, "He was right there! I bet he saw us all naked".

"Should we tell someone?" Aria asked, not knowing what to do in this situation.

"I mean, we could, but I have a better idea" a smirking Alison informed.

"Are we sure he's not in there?" a worried Aria asked as the five girls walked towards the Cavanaugh's garage.

"He's not, okay?" Alison snapped, "You've got the lighter, right, Spencer?".

Emily grabbed Alison's arm, "Let's wait a second".

"What, Emily?" an annoyed Alison asked.

"I don't wanna do this" Emily stated.

"Fine, go back" Alison said, "You're on your own".

"Okay, maybe, Emily's right" Aria said, "We should just call the cops, they'll take him in, they'll take care of it".

"Where's the fun in that?" Alison asked, "Girls, Toby Cavanaugh is a freak and we need to teach him a lesson, if he thinks he can come and spy on us while we're in your bedroom Emily, he needs to know that his little domain is no longer a safe little hideout, I mean who knows what he does in there all day that little freak!".

"Are you sure that it was Toby?" Spencer asked, worried that Alison mistook someone else for Toby".

"Yes!" Alison replied, "And it's a stink bomb, for god's sakes! We're not nuking the place, now, let's do it", Alison walked over to the garage door and turned to Spencer, "Give me the lighter".

After a moment of hesitation, Spencer took the lighter out of her pocket, she walked over to Alison and handed the lighter over to her, Alison quickly lit the stink bomb, she opened the garage door and threw the stink bomb in, she then started looking inside and let out a shocked gasp once her eyes landed on something.

"Let's get out of here, run" a panicked Alison told her friends.

The five girls quickly started running away, they let out a scream once they hard a explosion coming from inside the Cavanaugh's garage, once they turned around they were shocked seeing the whole garage on fire.

"Ali, what did you do?!" a panicked Spencer asked.

"We have to get out of here" Aria said.

"Come on, let's go" Emily said, the five girls linking their hands and running away from the crime scene.

While the four girls were remembering the past, they were suddenly pulled out of their flashback mode when all four of their phones started ringing at the same time, immediately causing them to exchange worried look amongst them.

Jenna grabbed Spencer's phone that was infront of her and forwarded it towards the Hasting's girl, "Aren't you gonna get that?" she asked.

Spencer took her phone from Jenna's hand and her and the rest of the girls started reading the message they had just received.

If only she could see how

After school, Spencer sat across her father at the Grille, "I've decided on the class I wanna take at Hollis" she informed her dad, her dad gave her a small nod but didn't lift his head up from his phone, "But it's not for credit dad, it's for fun".

Peter Hastings let out a small chuckle, "What's the point of that? Hey, your mom's coming back a day early, she'll be home tomorrow".

A dejected Spencer gave her father a small nod, when her eyes landed on the entrance of the Grill where she saw Aria entering, she quickly excused herself from her father and walked over to Aria, "Hey" Aria greeted, once her eyes landed on Spencer.

"Hey" Spencer greeted back, "I was gonna e-mail you when I got home, how weird was that lunch?".

"I'd say on a scale from one to ten, eleven" Aria admitted.

Spencer nodded her head in agreement, "Yeah".

"Oh, is that the new fiance?" Aria asked, as Wren and Melissa walked past them, "Is he as uptight as Melissa?".

"No one's as uptight as Melissa" Spencer stated, making Aria chuckle, "I'd better get back".

"Alright, see ya" Aria said, grabbing her bag of food and walking out the Grille.

Once Aria left, Spencer turned to go back to her family, when suddenly a hand was clasped around her wrist, Spencer turned to see who had grabbed her wrist and her eyes went wide seeing Lo.

"Here" Lo said, handing Spencer a glass, "You're gonna need this if you're gonna survive that dinner".

"What is this?" a confused Spencer asked, looking at the glass in her hand in uncertainty.

"It's vodka soda" Lo informed.

"Lo!" Spencer scolded, looking around to make sure no one heard him, "How did you even manage to get this?".

"Ever heard of a fake ID?" Lo teased, "Now take it, you and me both know that dinner is gonna be hell for you, you need some liquid courage".

Spencer looked at the drink in her hand then at the boy infront of her, both of them knew Lo was right, "Thanks" she whispered.

"No problem, Hastings" Lo said, before finally letting go of Spencer's wrist and letting her walk over to her family.

"Hi-Low, anyone?" Melissa asked her family.

"Hi-Low?" a confused Wren asked, wondering what was Hi-Low.

"It's a game" Spencer informed, "You guys don't play it in bed?".

"Wren, you can play too" Peter said, after giving Spencer a warning look.

"I'm a bit lost" Wren admitted.

"You'll catch on" Peter assured.

"I'll go first" Melissa said, "We just started our first week of class and I've already been nominated to serve on the business school's leadership committee".

Peter laughed, "Melissa likes to play the game when she's fairly certain she'll win".

Melissa chuckled, "Well, guess who I learned that from?".

"Yes, but don't go tasting victory just yet cause the judge ruled on my brief today and the class action suit against Winslow has been dismissed" Peter informed, as both him and Melissa took sips of their drinks.

Spencer couldn't help but roll her eyes in annoyance, she looked at the drink infront of her and suddenly was so glad she took it from Lo, she grabbed the drink and took a massive sip out of it, before glancing at the table Lo was sitting at, only to realise he was already looking at her, with a smirk on his face, Lo lifted his glass of vodka soda in his hand before taking a sip out of it, Spencer doing the same and the whole time neither of their eyes leaving each others.

"If I don't play, do I still get another drink?" Wren asked Spencer, breaking Lo and Spencer's staring contest.

Before Spencer could reply, Peter spoke, "Spencer, you're up".

"Um" Spencer hesitated.

"I'll go" Wren suddenly said, "I got a brilliant parking spot today right in front of the chem lab".

Spencer looked at Wren and let out an amused laugh, completely missing the jealous look on Lo's face.

"He's just kidding" Melissa told her father, before giving her fiance her suspicious look.

After the dinner was over, Spencer laid in her bed, working on her laptop, when Wren walking by her room, he stopped by her door and took a moment to just stare at the youngest Hastings, "Having trouble with that bursa sac?" Wren asked, gaining Spencer's attention after seeing her rub her shoulder.

Spencer looked at Wren and let out a laugh, "I can't take you seriously when you say bursa sac".

"Shall I give you a rub?" Wren asked, placing his basket of laundry on the floor.

"No, that's okay" Spencer assured, there was only one person who she was comfortable getting a shoulder rub from and that person was definitely not Wren.

"Yeah, it's late" Wren realised.

"Well, it's early for me" Spencer informed, sitting up in her bed, "I have a history test on Monday and a paper due in Latin".

"Ascendo tuun" Wren suddenly said.

"Do you know what you just said to me?" an amused Spencer asked.

"Think so, uh, up yours?" Wren said.

Spencer let out a laugh, "Yeah, okay".

"Yeah, that's the only Latin I remember" Wren informed, "Can I help with anything?".

"Oh, what, with your extensive knowledge of the language?" Spencer teased as she got off her bed and walked over to her bookshelf.

"Yeah" Wren said, before walking over to Spencer, "You know, I didn't grow up in a family like yours so I don't know that kind of pressure but I can imagine it could be unbearable at times".

"Yeah, well, you're not exactly a slouch, Mr. Oxford" Spencer said, "I mean, that drive had to come from somewhere".

"Yeah, it came from me" Wren said, "My life has been my choice".

"Well, you're lucky" an emotional Spencer said.

"I'm sorry, I'm being intrusive" Wren realised after seeing the tears in Spencer's eyes.

"No, no, you're being nice" Spencer said, "Before you, there was only one other person who was this nice to me".

Wren walked closer to Spencer and grabbed the book placed behind her on her desk, "Gehry said that the hat trick chair was inspired by an apple crate".

"I didn't realise that you were into design" Spencer said.

"Yeah" Wren whispered, as he took a moment to stare at Spencer, "I appericate beauty", the moment Spencer looked up at him, Wren smashed his lips on to hers, the exact moment Melissa decided to walk down the corridor and see the two kissing and then walked away in anger.

A shocked Spencer stood there for a moment, before she started to push Wren away from her, "Stop, stop, we can't, you can't do this, it's not right".

Wren stared at Spencer for a moment before finally rushing out of her room.

***

Next morning, Spencer's sleep was broken when she heard the door slam outside, a confused Spencer slowly got out of bed and walked over to her window and looked outside where she saw Wren walking out the barn with his things.

***

Alison, Hanna, Aria, Spencer and Emily all sat together at the Grill, "I got you guys something" Alison informed her friends, before handing each of her friend a small bag.

"What's the occasion?" a slightly confused Spencer asked.

"You'll see, open them" Alison said, the five girls proceeded to open their gifts and each of them saw a bracelet with their respective names on it, "We'll be friends forever", Emily glanced at Alison before proceeding to put her bracelet on, "Can you put mine on for me, Em?", a smiling Emily leaned forward and gladly helped tie the bracelet around Alison's wrist.

***

With music playing loudly in her ears, a disturbed Spencer ran down the street, the moment she turned the corner, she suddenly stopped when her eyes landed on Jenna sitting on a bench, typing out messages on her phone, "Send text now" Jenna voice commanded her phone, before turning her head in the direction Spencer was standing
