What're Friends For?
"....should wake up soon....be fine...." You heard an unfamiliar voice fading and out like the person was talking to you a million miles away. You cracked your eyes open slightly, instantly regretting the decision when they were assaulted with a bright white light. "Mark?" Your voice sounded dry and scratchy as you spoke, struggling to sit up as your eyes fully opened, blinking a couple of times to get adjusted to the light. "He's not here." One of the doctors that was on the helicopter with you informed you solemnly, gaze sympathetic. You felt your heart sank in defeat. "So he's not in this room, but he's okay, right?" You swallowed hard already knowing the answer. "I'm sorry, but there were no survivors in the crash but you." The doctor shook his head sadly. You sat there stunned, wishing it was all an elaborate prank. But it wasn't. "Did you at least find the-the..." You trailed off, unable to finish the sentence. "We're assuming he drowned at sea, but we haven't found his body yet." He reported grimly. You closed your eyes and took a deep breath to fight off the tears that began to rapidly form in your eyes. You pictured the last time you saw Mark happy, which was on the ship. You were talking about going on a real date with him once you landed. He had wanted to go to a fancy five star restaurant when you wanted to go to a simple place like McDonalds. Now the conversation was pointless, considering that you'd never see him again. "I'm very sorry." The doctor offered a sincere apology, along with a box of tissues. You put a had to your cheek. They were wet with tears. You hadn't even realized that you were crying. You nodded in appreciation as you wiped away the remaining tears with the back of your hand with a sniff. "The papers for your release have already been signed, so you're free to go whenever you want." The doctor stated before leaving you alone in the room, listening to your heart monitor beep in a somewhat soothing rhythm. You sat in silence for a while before you mustered the strength both physically and mentally to leave the room. You paused in front of the door of the lobby before walking through to check out. Waiting for you was Ken, Felix and Jack. They all immediately stood up when they saw you walk in. "Ye doing okay?" Jack asked gently, placing a reassuring hand on your shoulder. "I'm not sure." You replied truthfully. "I think we can all agree with that." Ken muttered semi-bitterly. "So, guessing you heard about...." Felix trailed off. You nodded with a sigh. "Do you know what happened?" Ken asked quietly with hesitance, as if worried asking would make you burst into tears. "The ship came in too fast...it was only Mark and I, the others-" You choked off, your mind flashing back to Samantha's crimson red eyes and look of pure hatred. "The others never made it off the planet. Once the rocket crashed into the ocean, Mark was drowned in the tidal waves when he tried to rescue me." You said the last part in a rush, wanting to get it out before you began crying again. You melted into Jack's warm embrace as you sobbed uncontrollably, snot running down your face. You could feel his own cold tears trail down your back as he rested his head on your shoulder so you wouldn't see him cry. Ken took his finger and tried to wipe away some of the tears. "Ugh, snot!" He made a disgusted face, making you giggle a little. He then proceeded to wipe his finger on Felix's arm. "Fit tora!" Felix cursed in Swedish before chasing after Jack, who had pulled away from the embrace just in time to avoid Felix rubbing his arm on his face. You couldn't help but laugh with Ken as the two chased each other around the lobby, startling patients and causing several adults to glare at them as the passed, muttering about the younger generation. "Go away Felix you slimy!" Jack darted behind you, attempting to use you as a human shield. "Fine." Felix skidded to a halt in front of you and promptly rubbed his arm on your shirt. "You can have that back." Felix smirked smugly. You stuck you tongue out at him in response as you made a mental note to wash the shirt as soon as you got home. "You guys wanna come over and hang out?" You offered. They all three agreed to meet at your place to play games and maybe eat food, even though it was ten at night. Ken gave the three of you a ride there in his truck. "Shot gun!" Jack ran ahead of you and jumped into the passenger seat. You snorted in amusement as Felix and Jack argued about who got to ride up front. Ken broke it off with a threat to leave them both behind, making Felix meekly take the back seat with you. The drive there was filled with conversation about what had changed while you were gone. Jack now had fifteen million subscribers and was engaged to his girlfriend Signe, Ken had two million subscribers and was married to Mary, and unsurprisingly for Felix nothing really changed. It was about eleven when you finally got to your house. You barely withheld a yawn as you clambered out of the backseat with Felix. "Race ye!" Jack challenged you, running at full speed to your front door. Thanks to your training, you were easily able to pull ahead at a light jog, beating him to the door. "No...fair!" Jack panted as you opened the door with a smug grin. You took a step inside before you froze mouth agape in the middle of the doorway. Standing in the middle of the living room soaking wet, drops of water dripping onto the floor was Mark. "Hey (Y/N)." He waved feebly before collapsing to the floor.
