Crash Land

"Ugh, my head hurts." You complained as you scanned the rocket. The rocket had slid several yards across the rocky rusty red landscape before smashing headfirst into a canyon. The front of the rocket was caved in to the point where the tip was only a few inches from your face. You let out a scream as you saw Antonio's bloody body still buckled into his seat, his eyes still open although he saw nothing. His helmet was completely shattered, pieces of it lying around the confined space of the caved in cabin. You screamed again as you felt something touch your arm. "Hey, it's okay (Y/N), it's just me." Mark assured you calmly as he wrapped his arms around you in a comforting hug. He was wearing a spare helmet, but he had gotten a long gash that reached from under his left eye to his jaw. "Have you seen Cassie, Antonio or Samantha?" You asked as you reluctantly retracted from his embrace. He shook his head, confirming your fears. They were either dead or....you weren't sure what else could've happened to them. "I'll search for them, you stay here." He put a bulky black gloved hand on your shoulder, then walked out of the door. "No, we need to stick together." You insisted defiantly. Mark sighed in exasperation, then motioned for you to follow him. Smugly, you gathered what supplies you could find, including your duffel and pursued after Mark, who was waiting impatiently outside of the door.

The two of you had barely moved a mile north away from the rocket when you spotted Caleb. He was lying on the dusty ground, helmet surprisingly intact. You gingerly checked him for any signs of injury. Other than a broken right leg, he was fine. "Caleb?" You carefully shook his shoulder to wake him up. "(Y/N)?" He muttered weakly. "We need to fix that leg." You stated worriedly. "I have an idea." With that, Mark scooped the now unconscious Caleb up and bounded across the ground. You chased after him until you reached the rocket. "Can you get my tools?" Mark inquired as he set Caleb down on the floor. You nodded, went to the back, grabbed his tool kit and brought it to him. You watched as Mark used his blow torch, tore his bed off of the wall, carved off a strip of metal from the back of his bed, welded the metal in a tight cylinder shape, duck taped his bed sheets to the inside, then took off Caleb's suit and slid the makeshift cast over his leg. "How did you know that would work?" You queried incredulously as he tightened the makeshift cast a bit more. "I didn't." Mark shrugged as he helped Caleb back into his suit. Thankfully the suit was baggy enough that the cast still fit. "Well, thanks." Caleb gave us a smirk, but you could see in his eyes that his leg still hurt badly. "Where's Antonio?" He asked as he looked around hopefully. His eyes immediately stopped on Antonio's lifeless body. "O-Oh." He stuttered, his lower lip trembling. Tears welled up in his eyes, but they didn't fall. Unsure of what to say, you watched as Caleb slowly unfastened Antonio and delicately laid him down on what remained of the bed that Mark had left in the middle of the floor. He fell onto his knees by Antonio's head. "Why couldn't it have been me?" He sniffed. "I know." You knelt down by Caleb, followed by Mark, who put an arm around your back as the tears you tried so hard to hold in streamed down your face like a waterfall. Even Mark's eyes glittered with unshed tears as he rocked you back and forth. "You need a hug too Caleb? 'Cause I'm all about bromance." He offered teasingly as he opened up his arms wider. Silently, Caleb scooted over next to you and let Mark engulf him and you with his arms. "I'm glad you guys are safe." He whispered to both of you.

The three of you stayed like that for a long time, relishing in each other's company. Your rumbling stomach interrupted the comfortable silence that had ensued. "Watch out Caleb, (Y/N) might eat you." Mark joked as he let the two of you go so he could scavenge in the back for food. He came back with three bags of water, three packages of ice cream and several scrawny potatoes. Gratefully, you took two potatoes and bit into one of them, then washed the dry potato down with a gulp of water. You were amazed at how well Mark was handling the whole situation, especially since this was his first mission. "I think tomorrow we should head out with as much supplies as we can carry and try to find Cassie and Samantha." Caleb suggested as he took off his helmet and tore into his package of vanilla ice cream. You frowned at the package, unconvinced it was good. "C'mon, food is food." Mark reminded you. You sighed, then opened your package as well. Hesitantly, you took a small bite out of the hard block ice cream. It tasted like old dry styrofoam that had a hint of vanilla flavoring. You ignored the taste since you weren't sure when you'd be able to eat next and finished off the block of dehydrated ice cream. Mark was savoring his ice cream like it would be his last meal. Caleb was already done and moving everyone's helmets off of the floor to one of the storage shelves in the back. "How do we even measure time out here? We're on Mars, not Earth." You emphasized. "Fine, I'll peek my head out and look." Caleb rolled his eyes dramatically and poked his head out the door after we had our helmets on as well. "Since the sun is closer to us, it should be close to night time on Earth. As far as here, I can't even guess." Caleb shook his head as he closed the door and removed his helmet. "Whatever time it is, I'm tired." Mark yawned. You were feeling exhausted as well. "I'll take one of the seats out here, you two can have your own bed." Mark sat down in his seat and reclined back. You knew he wouldn't take no for an answer, so you fastened yourself into your bed that was suspended on the wall by Cassie's abandoned bed. "Goodnight!" Caleb climbed into his own bed that was two beds away from you on your right after he stripped the suit off and donned a white t-shirt and blue silk pj pants. "Goodnight!" You called back. You then turned your head to look at Cassie, Samantha and Antonio's empty beds. "Goodnight guys. Don't worry guys, I'll find you." You whispered, mainly to assure yourself as you closed your eyes and drifted off to sleep.
