Chapter Twenty-three - A New Day
The morning was too quick to arrive. Sheila burrowed into the covers a little more and was surprised when two arms had wrapped around her waist and pulled her close to a rock hard body.
"I thought you were still asleep?" Sheila said snuggling in.
"I was until I thought you might be trying to escape?"
"Escape? You? Never," Sheila said and he kissed her nose. Sheila giggled. Hands down best birthday ever!
"We really do need to get a move on, however," Sheila said even though she didn't care for the idea.
"You don't have a job and I am currently on vacation. So, why do we have to leave this bed today?" Christian asked.
Sheila blushed at the implication. "We have a mutual friend who's life is falling apart. Remember?"
Christian groaned. "Ten more minutes."
Sheila frowned at him. "Okay, I'll settle for five but no more."
"As much I enjoyed last night and am looking forward to possible future nights, James is counting on us."
"Fine," Christian said grumpily, "but he owes me big time."
"He's partially responsible for getting us back together. I think that should give him a little leeway," Sheila reminded him.
"You're right, of course." But then he started to kiss her.
Sheila reveled in the attention but then quickly recognized his stall tactic and pushed him away.
He laughed. "Can't blame a guy for trying?" He could hardly believe it was true but here he was staring into her eyes. She was his, forevermore.
"Stop looking at me like that or we will never get out of here," Sheila said teasing him. It was difficult not to. Truthfully, there is nothing she would like to do more than to forget the rest of the world existed for a little while but she had made a promise.
There was a knock on the door and both Sheila and Christian looked at one another confused as to who it could be.
Sheila got up and donned her robe. She opened the door and there standing with some flowers and a package was Wes.
"Hey, baby girl. Happy Birthday!," he said handing her the package and flowers. He gave her a kiss on the cheek.
"Wes, uh... thank you!"
"You going to leave me standing out here, or am I allowed in?" Wes asked wondering why Sheila looked so surprised. It was her birthday after all. They always spent each other's birthday with one another, it was a tradition.
Shaking the clouds from her mind Sheila bid him enter. She glanced briefly at the bedroom and was at a complete loss as to what she should do next.
"So how was the rest of your night? Did you like our surprise?" Wes asked.
Sheila went to her kitchen and fetched a vase for the flowers setting the package momentarily on the countertop. "It certainly was surprising," Sheila said, not as surprising as to how things turned out but she wasn't quite sure how to bring that up.
The flowers were in their vase and she brought the package to where Wes was sitting. "You going to open that? I had it made especially for you."
"Sure," Sheila said awkwardly and began to open the box. Inside was a t-shirt with a picture of a unicorn and the saying "I believe in Good Men, Unicorns and Other Mythical Creatures."
Sheila laughed, "Wes, it's perfect!"
"I thought you would find the humor in it. Kyle told me it was in poor taste but I know my lil' sis. Wes laughed.
"Thank you!" She gave him a kiss on the cheek.
"So, details. How did your dinner date go?"
"It ah...well I guess you could say..."
"It went better than she expected," came the male voice from the other room.
Wes' head shot up when he heard Christian's voice. He nearly jumped up into a defensive position but was held in check when Sheila grabbed his arm.
"It's okay, Wes. It's just Christian."
Christian came into the room. He was dressed back into his clothes from the night before. Well, sort of... his shirt was missing a few buttons so he left it open.
Wes looked at Sheila for an explanation, "I thought you guys would work something out. Not just fall into bed together. He's still married isn't he?"
"Not since 8:30 pm last night," Christian said taking a seat among them.
This took Sheila by surprise too. She knew he was separated for a year, that he went to New York and had gotten his wife to sign the divorce papers so all was finial but not official. Knowing he was officially free when they made love somehow made the moment that much sweeter.
Seeing the look on Sheila's face, Christian said, "Got a text on my phone. Crystal had wanted to expedite the papers being filed with the courts and so took them there herself. I really do owe her something from Tiffany's this year."
"So then it's official you're free, as in no longer married?" Wes asked to clarify.
"That's correct," Christian replied.
"That's is NOT correct," Sheila said. "Well, not the 'you're free' part, at least."
Christian chuckled and pulled her into his lap. "You're right. You snapped me right up, didn't you? No grass growing under your feet." And then he kissed her and she totally gave in and kissed him back.
"Like Ewww! Get a room you two." And when Wes had seen how badly Sheila blushed his eyes widened. "Noooo! You...and... Really? Already? But that would make him...," Wes was too shocked to finish any of his sentences.
So, Christian proudly finished it for him. "The first guy she's ever slept with."
"Now, that's where you'd be wrong," Wes corrected. "We've slept together numerous times, you're just the first guy she's ever had sex with."
Sheila gave Wes, an "I'm going to kill you" look which just made Wes laugh out loud. "What? It's true!"
"I prefer the term made love to. And don't you dare try and cheapen this for me! You know nothing ever happened between you and me," Sheila stated, determined to clarify after feeling the way Christian had stiffened at Wes' words.
"Oh, yeah that's right, I'm gay," Wes said and was surprised when he didn't get a big reaction from the announcement. "You told him didn't you?"
"I'm sorry," Sheila said, "I didn't mean too it came out during our dinner conversation and I couldn't take it back. No matter how much I wanted to."
"Made her mad, did ya?" Wes asked Christian.
Thinking how she only said it in her defense of her best friend, Christian chuckled. "Yeah."
"Thought as much," Wes said. "He's got a lot to learn about you, Shelly. You sure he's up to the task?"
"I think he'll manage. And thanks for not being mad," Sheila said, she hated thinking she betrayed his trust somehow.
"Hey, if he's staying. He'd find out sooner or later. It's cool. Kinda like the fact that I don't have to be something I'm not when around you two," Wes admitted. "Although I will miss, needling this guy, he makes it so easy."
Christian frowned at him and Sheila said, "Knock it off you two."
"Wes, I'm on a mission to get Lanie and James back together," Sheila said.
"Good luck with that! It's all over the papers. The society pages especially are having a field day with it. Thankfully, you aren't mentioned. I was a little worried about that," Wes said.
Sheila jumped off Christian's lap and got the paper from her mailbox. Wes wasn't kidding. This is a way bigger mess then she realized. She was going to have to pull out all the stops to make this work.
And then something Wes had said earlier, began the start of the most brilliant plan, ever.
"Wes, can you take some time off?"
"What did you have in mind?"
"A trip to the Bahamas!"
"Sure, Kyle's been bugging me about getting away. When?"
"The day after tomorrow?"
"What?!" This was said in unison by both Christian and Wes.
"I've got a plan and it may require for you to play it straight but if I can make this happen, everybody gets their Happily Ever After."
