Chapter 7: Up In The Air

We walked out swiftly and I didn't dare to turn around and look back at the diner. I was sure that by now the entire restaurant would be aware that a so called murderer/criminally insane person had been in their midst and if I wasn't so afraid I would have laughed at how wrong they were.

I watched Zayn's shiny new blonde head disappear as he ducked into the car swiftly and turned on the engine.

I rushed in after him not feeling at ease at how he was so obviously rushing because that could only mean one thing.

That the vampires hunting us weren't far away and I wondered how much time that gave us.

I buckled my seat belt quickly and Zayn sighed in frustration as Harry stumbled in clumsily whilst juggling all our packed food in his hands.

"Do you know how near they are?" I whispered fearfully as Zayn pulled out of the diner's driveway and sped onto the narrow open road.

"I can't really tell. But I can hear bits of their conversations. That would be less than a mile radius," Zayn whispered as he clutched the steering wheel like his life depended on it.

Seeing him like this made me feel sick to my stomach. Aside from the encounter in the mental facility I was placed in, I have never seen Zayn this afraid. I was too used to his smug, over confident expressions that he always wore with ease.

I used to want to slap those off his face whenever he teased and taunted me, making me wonder if he was real or a hallucination.

Now I hated to admit but I actually missed that face of his.

"I think we'd better not speak for now," He said in a low voice.

I bit my lip and stared out at the open road before us. As far as I knew we were heading south towards the state border. That would be hours away and between then and now we were stuck between large open fields and the occasional small towns between.

It barely felt like we left Riverton. We couldn't be anywhere near the more southern towns like Mandurah or Busselton.

I mentally prayed that we would reach a small town soon. It would be much easier to hide there than here on an empty road between two vast pieces of land.

A loud chewing sound caused me to jump in my seat and both Zayn and I turned around to look at Harry who had a bundle of fries stuffed in his mouth.

He stared at us with wide eyes and held the carton of chips out for me to take.

"For the love of God could you be any louder?" Zayn sighed.

"What?? I know you may not realize this but we still need to eat. Unlike you, bloodsucker," Harry scoffed as he scarfed down half of his burger.

Zayn shot Harry a deathly look from the rear view mirror. "Rosalie, you should eat a bit too, before he finishes everything."

"Excuse me, you're one to talk about self-control," Harry shot back angrily.

"Guys be quiet," I nagged suddenly feeling irritated with the both of them.

I took the carton of chips and placed a few into my mouth. I chewed them slowly, trying to keep everything down. I couldn't help the fear induced nausea that made my stomach feel like a churning bowl of acid.

"Fuck," Zayn muttered so silently, I almost missed it.

My stomach lurched and I looked around to see no one behind us but Zayn picked up speed immediately.

Harry stopped eating and we both began to look around us but I couldn't see anything.

Zayn practically flew across the highway at a speed that was unnatural for the car we were in. It rattled and I shook in my seat, wondering what was going to happen next.

I cast a nervous glance at him as my teeth chattered loudly and then I saw it.

A small black dot in the rear view mirror that grew larger by the second. I bit the inside of my cheek so hard that the taste of iron coated my tongue.

There was no mistaking that black jeep. It was the same one I saw chasing us from the hospital, nearly driving us into a wall to kill us.

My vision blurred with hopeless tears as I realized there was no escape for us this time.

"That doesn't look like the police," Harry squinted at the rear view mirror, looking at the black jeep that was fast approaching us.

"Harry, wear your seatbelt. And don't utter a word," Zayn commanded at a stubborn looking Harry.

Harry frowned at his authoritative tone but when he saw the obvious fear on both our faces he leaned back and did as he was told.

Out of instinct, I glanced at Zayn for some form of reassurance and my mouth fell open in horror when I saw another black dot approaching from his side, just a couple of hundred metres away.

My head whipped to the window next to me and my worst fears were confirmed when I saw another black jeep headed our way as well.

We had three of them on our tail this time, and they were approaching from all corners.

My heart sunk into the pit of my stomach as I wondered if Zayn would be able to outsmart his way out of this.

"Shit," I heard Harry mumble and I looked up in the mirror to see his face glistening in nervous sweat.

He caught me looking and we held each other's stare. His green eyes looked as panicked as I felt but I still felt the same warmth in his gaze as I did in his embrace.

I refused to break eye contact as we stared at each other hopelessly. I saw Harry's eyes widen in horror and felt Zayn's hand rip open my seat belt and pull me towards him aggressively before a loud clang of metal erupted in my ears.

The car jerked violently to the right, almost throwing me on to Zayn. He stepped on the gas and we jerked forward again.

As I fell back into my seat, I could feel metal pressing into my ribs and that's when I realized we had been knocked by the jeep on my left.

I gasped in horror wondering what would have happened to me if Zayn hadn't pulled me away.

"Rosalie, take the wheel," Zayn said in a steady voice.

Before I had time to react, Zayn placed my shaking fingers around the steering wheel and began digging around in his pockets.

He cursed at himself while I struggled to keep us from hurtling off the road and onto one of the jeeps surrounding us.

I screamed when the jeep from behind hit the bumper causing my chest to slam into the wheel painfully.

It took me awhile to regain my bearings as I pressed my hands firmly on the steering wheel to keep us going straight.

"Zayn, I need some help here," I gritted my teeth.

"Got it," Zayn said as he dug out a small hand gun from one of the many pockets in his jacket.

"You're doing great, Rosalie," He cast me a quick smile before slamming his elbow into the cracked window of my seat. He aimed his gun at the jeep next to us and fired at the driver's seat.

The jeep screeched to a halt and toppled forward in its own momentum. I imagined the way the bullet pierced into Charlie's skin and cursed myself for the unnecessary imagination.

It was them or us. I shouldn't feel bad about a dead evil vampire.

"Zayn, behind you," Harry cried in a panicked voice and I heard him unbuckle his seatbelt.

I glanced behind and almost wished that I didn't. Propped outside Harry's window seat was a dark haired vampire in a black suit holding on to the side of our car like freaking spiderman.

He grabbed the door handle and broke it open but Zayn was quick to put a bullet in his head. He flew off the car as soon as the bullet hit him but a spray of red coated Harry's window which he was now holding tightly to keep it from flying open.

At seeing this the jeep next to us and the one behind fell back and began trailing us instead.

"They're calling for back up," Zayn muttered angrily. "They didn't think I still had the gun."

My hands tightened around the wheel in reflex and Zayn had to pry them open so that he could take over again.

I leaned back in my seat, avoiding the bulge of metal pressing into me as much as I could.

My heart almost soared with happiness when I saw the sign Mandurah and I knew we were approaching the familiar bridge that lead into the small town.

I saw it up ahead as Zayn took no time in reaching it at a frantic speed.

Beyond the bridge was an empty two lane road with a thicket of forest on its left and an empty field on its right.

I knew there were shop lots up ahead which meant there would be people and the vampires were not going to make a scene there. At least I hoped they wouldn't.

I gripped the edge of my seat tightly as we sped across the narrow bridge but my breath caught in my throat when I saw another black jeep approach the other end of the bridge.

No, no, no this couldn't be happening. I gripped my hair in frustration and stared at a hopeless looking Zayn.

He slammed is foot on the brake pedal and the car lurched forward. Both Harry and I flew forwards. Zayn pulled me back before I hit the dashboard and I felt Harry's body slam into my seat from behind.

We sat in silence as the doors of the jeep at the end of the bridge opened and four mean looking vampires stepped out and looked at us.

I felt Zayn's hand curl around mine as he looked like he was ready to pounce out of the car.

I wanted to ask him what he planned to do since we were literally sitting ducks here but I dared not speak, knowing the vampires would be able to hear us as well.

Thankfully Harry remained silent as well.

The vampires clad in black smiled at Zayn baring their fangs for us to see and I nearly screamed at the sight. Behind me Harry gasped in shock and I realized this was the first time he was seeing them for what they were.

Zayn held my wrist painfully and gestured for Harry to inch to the seat to his right. He kicked open his door and the vampires in front of us took a step forward and disappeared into a blur of motion.

Those next few moments turned into pure chaos as numerous eruptions echoed around us and suddenly we were surrounded by smoke. I could hear voices outside, some screaming, some yelling and then I heard the sound of metal digging into the hood of our car.

My eyes watered and I looked up to see a large hook buried into the hood of our car. I shrieked as I felt the car shake and we were lifted up into the air.

What the hell was going on?

I could hear gun shots around me but I couldn't see anything and I couldn't tell if it was really guns being fired or just more smoke bombs.

"Zayn, what's happening?" I cried.

"I have no idea," Zayn said in disbelief as he held my hand tightly. "Just don't let go, Rosalie."

I could feel us being lifted higher up into the air and the wind whipped around the car violently.

Harry's door gave way as the car tilted to its side and I saw him scuttle to the other end as he held the back of Zayn's seat, literally hanging for his life.

Is this how they were going to kill us?

Zayn peered out the window and then stared back at me with wide eyes. I didn't understand his expression until I saw the white surface of a large plane.

Before I knew it we were pulled into a large hangar with large white walls around us. I looked at the large containers that lined the walls and then at Zayn and he looked just as bewildered as I was.

Harry was the only one who voiced all our thoughts at once.

"What the hell just happened?"
