Chapter 13: A Thorn In The Side

"Guys give me the gun. This isn't the time to act stupid," Lauren warned Harry and I but I remained strangely stubborn despite the fact that there were two very scary looking vampires headed our away.

"Rosalie," Harry hesitated right after saying my name and then his eyes widened as he realized his mistake.

He had just uttered my real name and those officers had heard us.

I watched them mutter into their mouthpieces and the moment one of them neared our car, I pointed the gun their way and shot.

Everything was a blur of chaos as the glass window shattered, it's shards flying everywhere, scratching my arms with their sharp ends.

In a blink of an eye Lauren was out of the car, tackling the other vampire to the ground in a blurred mess of jumbled limbs.

The one I shot at didn't get hurt at all and he breezed towards Harry and I like the wind. I fired at him repeatedly, the silencer making sure no one else in the car park could hear someone shooting but the vampire dodged each bullet gracefully and he sneered at me before grabbing the door handle and ripping out the entire door.

I was too afraid to scream but Harry withdrew those silver spikes Kayla had made us practice with and flung it at the vampires chest with practiced ease. It lodged into his suit, right beneath his collar bone and the dark haired vampire sucked in a breath.

I snuck a glance at Harry, feeling awed but he looked just as surprised as I was. Harry grabbed my arm and kicked open his door.

"Come on!"

I followed him out but then something tugged me back by the shoulder, the force was so strong it felt like my shoulder had been ripped out of it's socket.

I bit down on my lip and the vampire who had grabbed my arm bared his fangs when he saw blood on my lips.

Just as I thought I was going to die, the vampire holding me screeched in pain and then fell to the floor. It was only then did I see Zayn get into the back seat.

"Hey, you okay?" He asked me as his dark brown eyes inspected my shoulder carefully.

"Yeah," I breathed out in relief. He was safe, he was here.

Harry pulled me out and Zayn followed suit and then we saw Lauren sitting over the vampire she had just tackled to unconsciousness.

"Zayn, thank God your here. These two are a handful," She gestured at Harry and I looking irritated.

"Where's the others?" Harry asked.

"I think Niall and Arlo have been caught. We've lost contact with them since they first got in. Kayla's gone to look for them," Zayn whispered.

All of us stared at him with worried expressions on our faces.

"We found your father," Zayn turned to Harry and I watched Harry's face light up with surprise and raw hope.

"Where is he?" I asked.

"Follow me," Zayn said and then he held my arm tightly and lead us back into the building.

None of us talked much after we walked into the hospital, all too afraid of being heard by vampires with super hearing.

We walked through the glass doors and into the madness of the emergency waiting area at the main wing of the Adelaide Hospital. There were patients scurrying to get registered, families crying in corners and people sleeping on the rows of benches provided for everyone who would have to wait hours till they got treated.

The hospital was as buzzing as I had hoped it would be. It made it all the more easier to move  through the throngs of people without drawing any attention to ourselves. There were a few desperate patients who stared at me as I passed and I was almost too nervous to realize that it was because I was in a nurses uniform.

I picked up the pace behind Zayn as he lead us to the back of the building to a set of lifts that looked like they were used for cargo. The doors to one of those huge lifts opened and we walked in.

"Where does this go?" Harry muttered and the lift opened a few doors down. My eyes narrowed at the dark gloomy atmosphere of this vast room and the smell of formalin made my nose scrunch up in distaste.

Zayn didn't wait for us to get accustomed to this place that looked like it belonged to a horror movie, instead he walked out swiftly, dragging me along with him. My eyes squinted at the rows of metal compartments that lined the walls on both sides.

I winced when my foot sunk into a puddle, the cold liquid seeped into my shoes and then into my socks, freezing me to the bone.

"Please don't tell me this place is what I think it is," I whispered to Zayn.

"I'm afraid it is."

I closed my eyes and prayed that the puddle I just stepped into was clean water and not formalin or some bodily fluid from a corpse.

We walked further into the morgue and Zayn stopped outside a row of metal drawers. He knocked on one of them and my heart jumped to my throat when the drawer slid outwards.

I stifled a scream, expecting to see a ghost and Harry cursed under his breath when a head popped out from the sliding metal compartment they use to keep a dead bodies.

Kayla looked amused as she climbed out of the drawer and landed on her feet silently. She then pulled out another person and my eyes widened when I realized that I was looking at Dr. Edward Styles, in the flesh. Finally.

He nodded his head, meeting our gazes one by one until he finally settled on Harry. I cast a wary glance at Harry and saw him look down at the floor after his eyes met his father's.

Kayla walked up to a trolley and then she began dragging it with her as we followed her to the same set of lifts. The soft squealing from the trolley's tyres was a great distraction as she spoke to us. I had to strain my ears as I listened even though I was right next to her.

"I've lost contact with Niall and Arlo is waiting for us, ready with our escape vehicle." Kayla doesn't say where Arlo is and for good reason. We have no choice but to trust her as she leads us up to the ground floor and down a weaving pathway of crowded corridors.

We finally reached an exit and I found myself almost running towards the harsh sunlight that shone through the glass doors.

All of us rushed out of the building, Kayla at the front, Zayn close behind with me, Dr. Edward behind us with Harry keeping an awkward but close distance to his father and Lauren at the back.

I saw a lone car parked by the driveway and my instincts told me it was Arlo. We were so close yet so far, with vampire speed we would be able to reach it in seconds but there were humans loitering around the exit, some sitting on park benches.

And if it's one thing I've learnt about this damn council and it's vampires it's that they value their secrecy above all else.

My nerves were a jumbled mess lodged in my throat, the moment Arlo pushed the front door open and Kayla got in I thought we had made it.

And that's when I heard it.

A smooth whizzing sound echoed through the air, so abrupt and deceitful that I almost missed it. But Zayn didn't and he swung me around just in time for the small bullet to lodge into his side instead of mine.

All of us heard the soft crunch of metal piercing skin and bone. I froze in place but Zayn pushed me inside the car with the speed of a vampire, not caring if anyone saw us. Lauren pushed Harry and his father inside too and all of us struggled to fit in the back seat as Arlo took off down the road.

I turned to Zayn who was holding on to his side, his gaze was expressionless but I could see the pain in his eyes. He was holding it in.

"Let me see," I begged as I grabbed his shirt and pulled up the side.

My eyes filled with tears when I saw the gaping bullet wound with dark blood seeping out from the edges.

"It's nothing," Zayn pushed my hand away and pressed down on the wound.

"We need to get the bullet out," Kayla stared at him in worry and then she looked at the rear view mirror. "It appears we've lost them."

I looked behind me and stared at the empty road behind us. It seemed too good to be true.

My attention quickly turned back to Zayn who looked like he was about to pass out. His skin was slowly becoming grey and his eyes rolled to the back of his head.

"Can bullets kill vampires?" I held onto Zayn to keep him steady and looked at Lauren who was staring at Zayn as well.

"It's unusual, unless they are laced with silver or poison."
