Chapter 41
Previously, on Love bite.
Walking back into our room, I get on my side of the bed and lay down. I resist the urge to curl up and wrap my arms around him because of his remaining wounds. In the end, I decide to just snuggle in closer, resting my head on his shoulder.
Closing my eyes and slowly breathing in Luka's fresh honey scent, I welcome the darkness, Ace's parting words running over and over on replay in my mind.
"That's one powerful Alpha you have there, watch out for him."
"Maybe there's hope for this alliance yet.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Now Sophie's P.O.V
I'm stirred from my deep sleep, Luka's fresh scent still going in my nose as I wake. Opening my eyes, I can tell by the blue orange light streaming through our bedroom window that it is early evening. I am about to fall back to sleep, that is until I feel the empty pain as well as hear the growl of my stomach.
Giving up on the idea of getting more sleep, I quietly sit up, throwing my legs over the side of the bed. My feet touching the carpet, I stand up and speed walk over towards the doorway, taking one last look at Luka before going through.
Picking up speed, I sprint down the stairs, crossing through the living room, passing a few random Ruby Stone wolves just sitting around talking to one another. Noticing me, they each give me a nod, but I pay them no mind.
Arriving at the kitchen, I spot Greg at the sink washing and drying his hands with a dish towel. Hearing me pull out a chair at the table and sit down, Greg turns off the water and spins around to face me. He smiles warmly.
"Good evening, Alpha Sophie. What can I do for you?"
"Evening Greg. I'll just have a bowl of yogurt if you don't mind please," I reply.
"No trouble at all," he says, walking over to the fridge and opening it.
While Greg fixes my snack, I remember something I meant to do after I got done talking to Ace earlier today but forgot. I connect my mind link to Amanda, feeling her connect to my own.
"Yes, Alpha."
"Hi, Amanda. Listen, I'm just linking you to let you know the house is safe, you can bring Victoria over, Ace is no longer a threat."
"Sounds good Alpha, tell Greg we'll be there soon," she instructs, disconnecting her mind link.
Turning to Greg, I speak.
"Just got off the link with your mate, she and your step-daughter are on their way, they'll be here soon."
Turning around, Greg walks back towards me, carrying a bowl in one hand and a spoon in the other. Placing the bowl of vanilla yogurt down in front of me, Greg hands me the spoon and smiles.
"Sounds like a plan, Alpha Sophie."
Dipping the spoon into my snack, I put the end in my mouth. I smile, feeling the pains of hunger in my stomach slowly disappearing.
"Thanks, Greg."

Now sitting on the couch hours later, with dark twilight light dimly showing through the living room window, I feel so small sitting here in such a large group of wolves. In the time I've been here, I learned from Maloney when she got here that Luka did end up breaking Ace's shoulder earlier today. Luckily for him, it was a simple break, he should heal in a few days. To Shelby's relief.
Getting the urge, I look up at the staircase, my eyes landing at the very top. Just like the last two nights before, Luka's still in bed asleep. The only difference being his mind is more at ease., I can feel it through his connection. Looks Like I'll be bringing him dinner tonight, I mean if I have to.
Even Keith and Alex have dropped by, but Alex has stayed well clear of any Ruby Stone wolves that walk by, becoming best friends with the back of her mate's head or fallowing Elliot around from room to room like a lost puppy.
Out of nowhere, I'm snapped out of my thoughts by hearing my front door open. I look over. First, there's nothing, then a moment later, in walks Suzie carrying Asher in her arms, still not being able to move much.
Getting up, I walk over to her and give her a questioning look.
"What are you doing here, isn't he supposed to be at the Healing Hut recovering?"
She gives me a guilty look.
"Sorry Alpha, I tried to tell him, but he wanted and begged to come and check up on Ace, his brother, no matter how many times I insisted on him staying behind."
Hearing small footsteps approaching both of us, we both turn to see Chloe, Maloney's little tag along. Taking us by surprise, Chloe looks with a mix of sweetness and pain at the sight of Asher's bandages. With a look of confusion on her face, Suzie slowly brings Asher's form a bit more down to Chloe's level.
Getting as close as she can to Asher without actually being in Suzie's arms herself, Chloe puts her head down gently on his chest without hurting him, like what a young child would do with a parent. Looking up from watching both of them, I meet Suzie's gaze with one of my own.
The gears and cogs turning inside both our minds, it only takes a few seconds for us to come to the same conclusion about what is going on here.
Their Mates.
"Is he going to be okay?" Chloe asks, snapping us both out of our thoughts in the way only she can.
Smiling warmly,Suzie's the one who responds.
"He'll be fine sweetie, he just needs to heal up."
Chloe brings her head back up to stand upright, looking at the cast on Asher's arm.
"Suzie, go on and take Asher up to see Ace." Then looking down towards Chloe, I smile at her. "You can go too, Chloe. Make sure you tell Shelby what's going on when you get there, Suzie."
Looking down at Chloe, Suzie starts to head towards the elevator, the cute little toddler hot on her heels.
Hearing quickly approaching footsteps from the second floor, I look up and see Maloney looking down from the railing. Her face is partly confused, partly curious, though odds are she already knows what's happened. She watches as her little sister, Asher, and Suzie go up to the second floor. She then turns back to face me.
"Is it true? Did my baby Sis find her mate already?"
"Yes, it's true," I order "Maloney, you go and tell your parents about this. Don't worry, I'll look after her."
Nodding, she walks down the stairs and out the front door to carry out my instructions.
Looking around a sense of loneliness overcomes me, I see all the couples, laughing, smiling, holding hands, and just being together, and for some of them, being protected by their other halves or being forbidden to be together at all. In the sea of couples, I'm the odd one out.
Suddenly, from somewhere in my loneliness, I feel something stirring on the other end of my aunt's connection. Oddly enough though, she has a wall up so I can't figure out what it is.
Out of nowhere, everyone around me starts to raise their heads up in sync, for seemingly no reason. My head shoots up, taking only a second for the scent to reach my nose and register. A scent. The scent. Fresh honey. But that could only mean... I look towards the staircase, finally seeing what everyone else is looking at.
Walking arm in arm with my aunt, her arm intertwined with his is Luka himself, moving slowly coming down each step.
My heart now beaming, I rise from my seat, my legs and feet feeling a bit numb and walk over to join the two of them. Wrapping my arms around Luka's neck, being mindful of the silver burns still open on the front of his body, I then plant a gentle kiss on his lips. Sliding beside Luka, I look towards my aunt and speak.
"I'll take him from here."
Nodding, my aunt starts unwinding her arm, I myself intertwining my own arm where her arm had just been. Taking some of Luka's weight, I look towards him and smile, carefully and slowly guiding him to the couch where I had just been for the past two hours with my aunt's help.
Setting him down in the seat I was in, I sit down in the seat right next to him. No sooner do we sit down then Elliot catches sight of us and walks over. As carefully as he can, Elliot places a hand on Luka's shoulder, looking concerned for his brother.
"Hi bro. How are you feeling?"
"I finally got some sleep, but my remaining silver wounds on my body still hurt, hints why I'm moving so slow."
"And it's going to continue to hurt longer, now that you put Ace's shoulder in two pieces instead of one."
"Oops," Luka mocks. "Guess I should've thought of that beforehand."
"Wow Luka, at least you didn't lose your sense of humor," Elliot chuckles. "Good to see you're feeling better." Elliot then walks away, Alex following closely on his heals.
With Elliot gone, Luka starts to look around the room, specifically at what's on everyone's plates. watching him out from the corner of my eye, I smile slightly. An image of random pack members chewing and eating their food a moment later, a longing feeling following.
Just as I'm about to ask him the question I now know to be true, Luka beats me too it. He turns towards me, his mouth all but watering and speaks.
"Sophie, I'm hungry, could I please have something to eat?"
I turn towards him.
"Luka, of course, you can, you've been in and out of it for almost four days, you must be starving. What do you want?"
He looks around the room, glancing in between the plates for a moment.
"Turkey sandwiches, four of them."
"Really Luka, you want four of them. Are you sure your eyes are not trying to be bigger than your stomach?"
Luka nods.
From the kitchen, Greg's voice sounds.
"I can go ahead and get started on those if you want me to, Sophie."
"No, that's fine Greg, I'll fix Luka's dinner myself. Thank you though."
Getting up, I walk over into the kitchen and to the fridge. It only takes me a moment for me to place four folded pieces of turkey on the bread followed by one piece of cheese each.
Slicing the sandwiches just how Luka likes it and so that they fit on one plate, I carefully stack them in a neat little tower, one on top of the other, then I pick up the platter and carry it into the living room.
"Here you go, Sir."
Watching me approaching him, Luka holds out his arms and takes the plate and balances it on his knee. I sit down.
Picking up one-half of the four sandwiches, Luka places it in his mouth and begins to chew. A moment later though, he stops and looks towards me, concern growing on his face.
"Is Ace going to be okay, Sophie?" He asks his mouth still full.
"Yes, Maloney told me that he has a broken shoulder, but it was a simple break, only two places. He'll be healed and able to fix your burns in about a day."
Swallowing, Luka speaks, going in for another bite.
"Shelby must really hate me, huh."
"No," I reply, shaking my head. She just told me, she would do the same thing if she were in your shoes. However, she did want me to warn you and I quote, to never let it happen again."
"I'll Try," he replies, picking up another piece of his first sandwich...Wait a second.
"Dang Luka, you're already on to your second sandwich," I say, looking down at what remains on his plate.
"I told you, Sophie, I'm hungry."
"Yeah, but at the rate, you're eating you'll give yourself a stomach ache," I joke
From where we're sitting, I hear the front door open and smell my uncle walk in. He closes the door and comes walking in the rest of the way.
"Careful Little Sophie, the way he's eating, he might be about to hit another growth spurt," he says, walking into the living room and to the couch.
"Well, I'll be sure to keep the fridge stocked," I reply
"The last time your mate went through a growth spurt, I swear he almost wiped out an entire herd of dear in Bloodstone Canyon. Good luck," he chuckles. Turning towards Luka, my uncle places a hand on his shoulder. "Sherry told me what happened when Ace tried to heal your burns earlier today, good on you."
"Uncle."
"It's True Sophie, it's called payback. Anyway, I'll let y'all get back to your night."
With my uncle walking away, Luka looks down and starts to dig into his last two sandwiches on his plate.
***
Upon Luka finishing his dinner, I get up and take his plate into the kitchen, placing it into the sink to be cleaned. Opening the fridge again, I pull out a can of Pepsi, caffeine free and carry it to the living room.
Only a moment after I sit back down and hand Luka his drink, Keith comes over with Alex in his arms and sits down in the empty seat on the other side of us, carefully sitting his mate on his lap. He smiles.
"Hi lovebirds, how's it going?"
"Hi, Keith. Better now than we did when the day started. You?"
"Better than you two from what it sounds like. I've mostly been hanging out with Alex, my brother, his mate, and the babies."
Now curious, I turn towards Keith and ask the question I can't help but ask.
"So Keith, how has becoming an uncle been treating you?"
"Amazing."
"How does Alex feel about it?"
"For now, it's a bit much for her." Keith looks down at his lap, towards Alex. "In fact, when she got to hold Loka last night, she was driven to tears just sitting in the chair."
From all the way across the house but still in earshot, Elliot comes back into the living room again and comes over, looking at Keith. (As I said before, Elliot has the best hearing in the pack. No matter what he's doing or where he is, he can hear a pin drop.)
"Is it true, did the twins behave for you?"
"Like a dream, total putty in my hands," Keith replies, Giving Elliot a knowing smile.
"That's easy for you to say," Elliot continues. "You didn't have to pry one off your finger this afternoon."
Turning to face Keith, both mine and Luka's curiosity now peaked, I ask.
"What happened this afternoon?"
"This afternoon," Keith begins. "While you and Luka were taking your nap, Elliot and I were in Cody and Heather's room feeding the twins, Cody and Heather were really tired," he continues. "We were giving them their bottles, I had McKinley while Elliot here had Loka. He had already finished about half of the bottle, so he was starting to get less milk with each slurp. Well, Loka didn't appreciate the lack of food. When Elliot took the bottle for a moment in order to shift positions, Loka opened his mouth and bit down on Elliot's finger."
"It was more like a gumming than a bite, but it still hurt somewhat," Elliot interjects.
"Maybe he just thought you would taste good."
Elliot smiles at my remark.
"Yeah bro, who wouldn't take a bite out of you? After all, you are pretty sweet."
Elliot looks over towards Luka, his smile growing bigger.
"Aww thanks, Luka."
The light outside growing darker and darker with every moment. now with only a single dark shade of blue, Luka lets out a big yawn and looks at the clock on the kitchen wall. The clock reads eleven. He then turns towards me and stretches his arms up, his shoulders popping and snapping with the action.
"Alright Sophie, I think it's about time for me to go back upstairs and turn in."
"Alright Luka, I'll be right with you."
Luka nods and stands up, jostling his front wounds a bit as he does so.
"Ahh-siss"
Looking concerned, Both Elliot and I move quickly to support Luka, one on each side of him.
"Careful."
"Careful bro."
Getting his balance once again, Luka stands upright a bit. He gives us a look that says, "I've got this." Once he knows we got the message, he looks around at all the wolves in the room, Elliot removes his hand, but keeping mine close.
"Alright, well, I guess Sophie and I will see you guys in the morning."
Getting up myself, I hug Elliot goodnight. Slowly maneuvering over to Keith's seat Luka holds out his hand, body shaking a bit. Noticing this, Keith stands up, Alex back in his arm and takes Luka's hand. He smirks kindly.
"Goodnight runt, feel better and get plenty of rest."
"I will, thanks Keith," Luka nods, he then adds. "Oh, and be sure to give your brother and mate our love."
"I will, I'll be sure of that."
"Oh," Luka says, suddenly remembering something. "Keith, one more thing, be sure to keep an eye out for this one," he says, gesturing towards Alex.
"You know I will, it's the whole reason I was put on planet earth in the first place."
Releasing Keith's hand, Luka turns to face Elliot, his arms wrapping around the boys' neck a bit, before gently breaking apart and doing their secret handshake that they've had all this time. Once they're done, I speak.
"As you know Elliot, you can leave at any time. Just lock the house up when you head out."
"Yes Sophie," he nods and replies. "I'll be sure that everyone's in bed and I'm not needed before I leave and lock up."
He's so kind and generous, it's almost sickening. We definitely need more people like him in the world.
"Why thank you, I try to be."
Oh right, that whole, my packs now connected to Luka and I is still going to take some time getting used to.
"Hmm, have a good night, Elliot."
Then upon Luka and I walking towards the staircase, I hear Keith wish me a good night, looking after me. I look back at him over my shoulder.
"Good night, Keith, and you too Alex."
Turning my head back around, Luka and I climb the first step. Climbing up slowly, Luka and I make our way towards our room. However, making it around the banister. we spot Shelby walking towards us from her and Ace's room.
"Hey, you."
"Hey, you," I repeat.
"I thought I smelled you coming, so Ace told me to come out and greet you two," Shelby then turns her attention towards Luka and continues. "So how are you feeling Luka, feeling better?"
"A bit, Shelby, I'm doing fine," regret then spreads across Luka's face. "Listen, Shelby. About what I did to Ace earlier today, I'm really sorry..."
"It's okay Luka, no one was killed. Like I told you earlier, I would've done the same thing if I was in your shoes. Ace just has a broken shoulder, nothing more, nothing less," she then gives my mate a serious looking glare. "But like I also told Sophie to tell you, don't let it happen again."
"I'll try, Shelby. You have my word, " Luka informs Shelby, drawing her in for a hug, breaking away slightly and continuing. "Hey, tell Ace that I'm sorry for what I did. I would do it myself, but unfortunately, I'm still unsure of him. I may have forgiven him physically, but emotionally, I haven't yet. To be honest, I'm not sure those scars will ever heal."
"Sure Luka, you can count on me."
Shelby breaks away fully from Luka, being careful of his wounds and looking between the both of us. I speak up.
"It's getting late. You should be getting back to your room, Shelby. Otherwise, Ace is going to regret sending you out here. He's probably missing you now."
"Yes, he is," Shelby confirms with a nod. "Good night, Luka." "Night Sophie."
Then walking past us, Shelby goes slowly down the hall towards her room, without even looking back.
Taking my hand, I place it gently on Luka's shoulder and guide him towards our room. Once inside, I walk alongside Luka until we get to his side of our bed. Making sure he has his Balance, I speed walk to my side.
I slide on to my side just as my mate slides on to his and rolls over onto his side, Pulling the covers back slightly. I smile warmly and sweetly towards him.
"Goodnight, Luka, I'll see you in the morning. I love you."
"I love you too, Sophie Jane," Luka repeats, leaning in and giving me a small but powerful kiss, hot sparks shooting everywhere across my body. "Goodnight, Sophie, and thanks for helping me tonight."
"Anything for you, Luka Honey."
I then roll over on to my more comfortable side, in order to avoid knocking into Luka's front side and hurting him more. I hear Luka roll back, shifting the bed slightly. I am so glad Luka can now sleep on his back again instead of his stomach. Getting an idea, I begin to zone out for a moment.
When Ace is finally able to heal the rest of Luka's wounds, I think I'll give him a back rub. He's earned it, and it's long overdue.
Once again, I hear Luka shift over to my side, facing my back.
"Mmm, that would be nice."
I stifle a laugh and am about to take my pillow and hit him but decided against it. I sit up slightly, turning my head.
"Hey, Luka...?" I trail off, I was about to ask if he wanted me to apply the Stella Gel one more time for the night, but I gave up when I realized that he has already fallen asleep.
Letting out a sigh, I lay back down and start to feel my eyes get heavy.
As I start to let the darkness take over, one last thought enters my mind as I get into the comfy spot on my pillow.
The countdown to Luka's birthday has begun.

Why I haven't been writing? Well for three reasons. One, as always writer's block. Two, the Holidays. Three, the new fur baby of the family. He is a six-month-old lab mix, his name is Kairo, and as of now, he's the only unrelated man in my life.
In case you're wondering, this is him.
