Chapter 40
Previously, on Love bite.
Flipping the top open, I open the bottle, squeezing a little bit of the gel on my hand and gently put it on the first of Luka's wounds.
"Aah, Sophie," Luka moans, his body trembling again.
"Shh. It's okay Luka, I'm here. let me work.
Deep down, I know it's going to be another long night for me, but for my mate, I know it will be well worth it.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Now Sophie's P.O.V
Phew. Covering my mouth to stifle out a yawn, I let it rip. Taking a sip of my morning coffee a moment later, I look down at my near-empty breakfast plate.
As I predicted, last night was another bad one for the both of us. I ended up staying up all night, rubbing the Stella Gel on Luka's wounds, trying to get the redness to go down.
Last night was one of the only nights I bet Luka didn't want me to rub his back. His wounds being open like they are, I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest.
As I said before, I applied the Stella Gel to Luka's back all night. Unlike last time, however, the relief lasts for only half an hour or so. In the space between the relief and reapplication, Luka and I did get some sleep.
Around high noon, Luka finally fell back to sleep, allowing me to sneak down here for some breakfast.
Growing concerned, I asked Elliot to come over and watch after Luka while I'm down here eating. Assuring me, he'd let me know if Luka wakes again.
Being snapped out of my thoughts by the sound of rapid footsteps heading towards the staircase, I look up, just in time to spot Shelby.
She makes it about halfway down the steps before looking down towards me.
"Sophie! Please come to our room quickly and bring the Stella Gel with you."
Feeling my eyes pop out of my head, I stand up. I'm not tired anymore. Very quickly, I down my last sip of coffee and rush up the stairs after her.
Walking into mine and Luka's bedroom, being very careful not to wake Luka, still lying fast asleep on his side of the bed, I grab the bottle of gel from the foot.
Raising a questioning eyebrow, Elliot looks over towards the both of us and asks. "What's wrong, what's going on?"
I'm the one to respond.
"Something's come up with Ace I suppose."
"What's happened?"
"I don't know," I reply. "Shelby didn't tell me, but she needs the Stella Gel, so I know it's not good."
"May I come, you girls might need some help."
I nod in agreement.
"Yes, you can come with us. Under the condition, you keep an ear out for Luka."
Elliot nods understandingly.
"Alright let's go see what's wrong.
Very quietly but quickly, the three of us walk out of our room, leaving the door open just slightly, just in case Luka decides to get up.
***
Upon my eyes landing on Ace when we enter the room, I get why Shelby was so frantic and why she needed me to bring the Stella Gel.
Ace is laying on the bed, his shirt back rolled up. Located in the center of his back, looking red and inflamed, is a large round silver wound. My aunt's standing at the side of the bed, waiting for us.
Shelby walks in ahead of me and speaks.
"He's got a bad silver wound on his back."
I nod. Way to state the obvious, Shelby.
Walking over to the near side of the bed along with Shelby, I gently place a hand on his back, letting him know I'm there.
He first flinches at my touch but then relaxes after the pain subsides.
"Oh, hey Sophie, it's you."
Looking concerned and lovingly at her mate all at once, Shelby askes. "Ace, when? And where did this happen?"
He sighs in a reply.
"A few nights ago, my wolf couldn't stand it, he couldn't take the loneliness anymore. So after I put Asher to bed, I went to the torture house and stabbed myself in the back with a silver pipe. Luckily, a few of my pack members found me and got me to stop before it was too late."
"You couldn't take being alone anymore, so you tried to kill yourself," I interject.
Ace nods.
Shelby comes in close and gives Ace a gentle kiss behind his left ear, pulling back only moments later.
"Don't worry my mate, we'll make it better."
"Yeah Ace, it'll only take a moment."
Stepping to the side a bit, I open the bottle of Stella Gel and get a small amount in my hand. Gently rubbing the Gel on Ace's wound, I keep my eyes downcast.
After finishing the treatment, seeing the redness and swelling go down, I pull down his shirt gently.
Ace sits up on the side of the bed, still looking weak, but more or less acting like his old self
He looks over towards me and says kindly.
"Thanks for healing me, Sophie. Your mother was a medical genius for discovering and coming up with this stuff."
I feel my ears get warm from the kind words, but I choose to ignore it.
"So, I take that to mean you're feeling better?"
"Yep, I can barely feel the pain anymore."
Getting a joyful smile on her face. Shelby wraps her arms gently around his neck.
"Oh, it's so wonderful for me to hear that."
The two of them then lean forwards, kissing each other passionately on the lips.
Looking away for a moment, feeling my face heat up, I catch Elliott out of the corner of my eye making himself fake gag by putting his finger in his mouth.
I smile humorously at him, knowing we're both thinking the same thing. Kissing's pretty gross when you're not on the receiving end of it.
Shelby and Ace break it off a moment later
"Oh, one more thing, Sophie. I wanted to thank you for believing there was still some good in me, even after all I've done."
I shake my head.
"No, don't thank me, thank Elliot, he was the first. When he first heard you had mate madness and what it inquired, he wanted to rush over and warn you, even though you almost creamed him the night before. I stopped him before he could get himself killed."
Looking back over his shoulder, facing Elliot, Ace remarks.
"Well then, thank you very much for that Elliot," Ace says kindly. "I didn't hurt you on that night, did I?"
"No, you didn't hurt me at all, Alpha. Sir," Elliot replies, becoming confused. "Umm. Pardon me, I'm divided on what I should call you by, Alpha, Sir, or your name."
"I'm not your Alpha anymore, kid. Just call me Ace, okay?"
"Okay, Ace," Elliot replies.
Ace's conversation with Elliot is cut short, a pained cry sounding from somewhere in the house. The five of us turn our heads towards the noise's source, four of them wondering where it's coming from. Not me, I know where it's coming from, and who it's coming from.
Ace turns his head back around, facing me again.
"Geez, Sophie is that a pained cry or a dying whale?"
I give him a threatening look, turning frantic.
"You idiot, that's Luka." I look towards Elliot, "Elliot, go."
Nodding. Elliot all but runs out of the room, passing through the doorway in only a few strides.
My aunt now looking confused asks.
"Little Sophie, what's wrong with Luka?"
Ignoring her question for a moment, catching sight of Shelby's alarm clock, I let out a sigh.
Too long. During the time we've spent talking to Ace and my aunt, I lost track of time, and now Luka's last Stella Gel application has worn off.
"He's just hurting again," I reply.
Raising an eyebrow, my aunt then asks.
"Why would Luka be hurting Sophie? Is he alright?"
I take a step back, I had forgotten that I hadn't told her about Luka yet.
"Well, last night Luka and I got to have some alone time, and I finally found out what was wrong with him. It seems that yesterday morning all of Luka's old silver burn scars on his body have burst open, but we can't figure out why..."
At my last words, my aunt's face goes white. I don't mean pale, I mean sickly white.
"What is it, Aunt Sherry?"
"Sophie, old silver wounds can flare back up when the wolf comes back into contact with the object, person who inflicted the wounds. Now normally, the wounds only get a bit red and painful. Luka's wounds bursting open is unusual, but then again I..."
"To be clear, these are the same silver wounds I caused, right?"
It was Ace, I forgot we were standing within earshot of him. I turn towards him and nod.
"Ye...yes," I reply, my voice shaking slightly. "Why?"
Ace looks towards my aunt, his own face now in a panic.
"Doctor Sherry, Sophie. Help me up please, I can help him."
"Absolutely not," I reply adamantly. "Ace, a gentle reminder again, you're the one who gave Luka those wounds in the first place. If you come in there, you'll put him in more pain than you already have, I can't allow that."
"Don't remind me." Ace's tone turns serious. "Look, Sophie, I'm the only one who can heal him for good. If you don't let me do this, Sophie, Luka's going to be in pain till we leave in a few months. Please, you've got to trust me," he adds at the end determinedly. "I'll crawl to yawls room if I have to."
Ace's words take me by surprise. Not what he said and what they meant, but how they were said. When those words left Ace's mouth, they didn't sound like a mere request, instead, they sounded like an Alpha's order.
What does Ace know that I don't?
Reluctantly letting out another sigh, I give in and nod.
"Alright, I'll let you do what you have to do."
"What? Wait, Sophie..."
"Aunt Sherry, if he knows how to heal Luka and get him out of pain, I'll put my faith in him." Facing Ace, I warn. "But better not try anything Ace. If you do, I'll make you wish you were never born. Is there an understanding between us?"
"Yes, Sophie," Ace replies with a nod. "Wouldn't dream of trying anything. I have no reason to harm Luka anymore, I know you're not my mate."
Giving a nod, I face my aunt.
"Okay Aunt Sherry, you help Ace up and get to our room as soon as you can. I'm going to our room to be with Luka."
"I'll help your Aunt with Ace."
Shelby moves over to my aunt's other side, putting Ace's arm around her shoulder.
I nod,
"Good."
Turning to leave, I make it to the doorway. But as I pass through, a chilling thought crosses my mind.
You may not have any reason to harm Luka Ace, but Luka has plenty of reasons to harm you.
***
Slowing outside our bedroom door, I sigh in and then let it out, my eyes locking with my mate still lying in the bed.
This should be fun.
Hearing my sigh, Elliot looks up and locks eyes with mine
Starting to slowly walk in, I link up to Elliot. He connects the link immediately, happiness and kindness flooding over the connection like always.
"What's up?"
"I thought I'd give you a heads up on what's about to happen."
"Why, what's about to happen?"
"Look into my eyes."
Taking a deep breath, letting my eyes shift from green to yellow, I go through the events of a few moments ago. One after the other.
Thirty seconds later, my eyes turn back to normal and Elliot looks at me stunned or like I've gone crazy.
"Sophie, have you gone mad?"
"Just about."
"Sophie, you know what Ace has done to Luka in the past. How can you think of doing something like this?"
"The Stella Gel offers him temporary relief. If Ace knows of a way to solve this with no harm, then so be it. I would rather take this risk and it works, then Luka being in pain every day for the next three months."
"I don't..."
"I have faith in Ace, faith in him and whatever he has planned."
"Huh. Alright, Sophie, if you have faith in him, I do too, but I still don't like putting Luka through this. "
"And you think I do?"
Getting to the bed, I disconnect the link from Elliot. Looking, I bend down towards Luka, gently running my fingers through his hair, trying to comfort him as best I can.
Sensing me, Luka turns his head to the side, now looking at me out from the corner of his eye. Looking at him from here, it looks like Luka's giving me a slight smile,
Let's see how long that lasts.
"Hey, Sophie is it time for another application of Stella Gel?"
"I don't know, you tell me. Listen, Luka, we're going to try something different. "
"What?"
"I don't know what it is, but I do know one thing, you won't like what it entails."
"Why not?"
Pausing, I'm about to tell him then suddenly looking up to the doorway sensing Ace coming. It becomes clear within a second Luka senses this too, him letting out whimpers of pain and his body trembling in fear. His heart rate then picks up
Luka may be turning into an Alpha, but he's still afraid of Ace and what he might do.
Looking back down, I place my free hand as close to his mate mark as I can, trying to keep him calm and still.
"Luka it's okay, Luka it's okay. I'm right here."
Seeing Ace's feet walk into the room, I look up again, not moving my hands, giving him a pleading look.
By now, Luka's pushing against both my hands, struggling a bit trying to get away and hide.
Ace gets the message.
"Elliot, help Sophie to hold him down," Ace instructs, he then adds. "At least till I start, then he'll relax."
Nodding, Elliot gently places a hand on one of my own.
Slowly making his way over to the side of the bed that Elliot, Luka, and I are on, Ace looks towards my aunt and Shelby.
"I'm going to need you two to help me, could both of you brace me so that I can stand up while I do this?"
"Of course," they both reply
Getting his balance, Ace rolls up both his sleeves. His standing's a bit shaky but otherwise not bad.
"So what are you going to be doing Ace?"
Cuffing his sleeves, Ace replies simply.
"Something you've never seen me do before Sophie."
Readying his hands, Ace lets out a breath and places them gently on Luka's back. All of us in the room were expecting Luka to scream out as soon as his skin made contact with Ace's, to our surprise though, he doesn't. His body's still a bit tense but that's about it.
Watching in amazement, a brilliant white light begins to glow from Ace's palms, illuminating Luka's skin slightly.
Watching with wide eyes, I watch as Luka's wounds start to heal, the swelling starting to go down bit by bit and the once inflamed tissue becoming a shade of pink as if all the heat is being sucked in by the glow.
Amazed and with my jaw hanging out and, on the floor, I look up towards Ace. How incredible.
Ace has healing powers; how could I not have known? We dated for almost two years, he never showed any sign of this once...
Ace moves up Luka's back, getting the wounds that might not be getting as much of the healing light as the others, earning him a whimper of pain from Luka, and bringing me back down to earth.
This is remarkable, the powers of healing are rare to have to begin with, and even harder to master.
Feeling like he owes me an answer and finally putting my mouth where it belongs, I speak to him quietly.
"You have the powers of healing Ace Summers."
"Yes Sophie, I have the powers of healing, but It only works on those I've hurt and only injuries I've caused."
"Oh, that's what you meant by, you were the only one who could get Luka out of pain, you meant it literally."
"Yes, I did. The only one that I can't use this ability on, is me. Not even if I hurt myself, that's why I couldn't heal the silver wound on my back. But what does it matter, I've got my wolf to cover that."
"Why didn't you tell me about this ability of yours? Even while we were dating."
"I didn't want you to treat me like a freak. I didn't want you to discover what I could do and then turn around and look at me like a monster. Having healing powers like mine are rare to come by, you know."
"Ace, if I would've found out about this, I wouldn't have treated or thought of you as a monster. Now, after I saw what you did to Luka after you kidnapped him, I thought you were a monster back then, but I don't anymore."
"I know, that's why I'm trying to fix this."
Ace pauses for a moment, looking over the state of Luka's wounds.
"Geez, I really screwed him up."
The way Ace said those words, it sounded like he was choking on something that was hard to swallow. As if all the life was being squeezed out of his own body.
It hurts me to even hear him sound like that, I turn to face Shelby for help.
"Ace, this is amazing, I didn't even know you could do something like this."
"See Shelby, you're not the only one that's gifted. You have invulnerability to silver, and I have the power to heal. Speaking of which."
We turn our attention back towards Luka, his body now looking limp and relaxed. At the same time, the white light goes out from Ace's hands. Removing his hands slowly, Ace lets out another sigh.
"There we go, that should do it. His wounds should still heal by themselves now, I just had to jump start it by using my powers."
Nodding, I look back down at Luka, my voice soft.
"Luka, are you now okay?"
Getting no reply, I hold my breath.
Seeing a flash of red in my vision, I feel the rage bubbling up on Luka's connection. Within a fraction of a second, Ace is tossed from the side of the bed, knocking him into a wall on the other side of the room. Luckily my aunt and Shelby let go of Ace only a second before. If they hadn't, they would've been tossed too.
See, I told you this would be fun.
"Luka!"
Like a predator rounding on its downed prey, Luka rolls over onto his stomach, throwing off the covers, he jumps out of the bed
Watching in horror, Luka wraps his hands around Ace's throat, preceding to choke the life out of his pray. Ace both weak and in shock, doesn't even fight Luka off.
Both My aunt and Shelby shooting from the side of the bed, Shelby wanting to pull Luka off, or at the most kill him.
Feeling the pure rage on the end of Luka's connection and seeing the flashes of red in my vision, I realize something. Running around the other side of the bed, I make it to the other side of the room first.
"Move Sophie, I got to pull the two of them apart."
"No Shelby, you can't. Not unless you yourself want to be killed."
"Try to stop me, Sophie."
Going in to stop Luka, I stop Shelby by giving her a warning look. Reluctantly, Shelby submits by bowing her head.
Since Shelby's no longer a member of my pack, my orders don't affect her. However, since she's on my territory, she has no choice but to follow my orders.
Looking at the scene in front of us, my eyes land on Luka. His face contorted in anger, his eyes a solid shade of yellow, and his hands wrapped around Ace's neck so tight his fingers are of a shade of white.
Ace's face is pale, turning slightly purple. So weak, all he can do is struggle under Luka's tight hands.
"Luka's own wolf is in control."
"What can we do Sophie?"
Ignoring Shelby's question, I step forward, putting a gentle hand on Luka's quivering shoulder.
"Luka. Luka, I think you should calm down."
Shaking his head, Luka then says in a firmer voice than his own.
"No. You know what he did, he needs to die for it."
"I know Luka, but that happened over a year and a half ago. Ace didn't have any control of his actions back then, he has put it behind him, he even healed your wounds before all of this happened."
Shaking his head, Luka replies using the same tone.
"No Sophie, not that."
Before I can figure out what else it could be, Luka shows me by playing the scene from his mind. The scene that he's showing me is from the battle at the moment of how my Grandfather left us. The play by play is how I remember it but from a different angle.
"His pack members killed your Grandfather, now he has to pay for it."
At that, my face pales. I didn't tell Luka the truth about my Grandfather, and now Ace is paying for it, and he's going to pay for it if I don't tell him the truth. But, how could I? Where do I begin?
Loosening Luka's grip around his neck just long enough to get some air, Ace gasps.
"You didn't tell him, did you?"
Feeling my stomach knot, I reply simply.
"No, I didn't. I was going to, but with everything going on, it just got away from me."
Shelby turns to me, her eyes widened with urgency.
"Sophie, you're going to have to do something to stop this, otherwise Ace is going to bite the dust."
Not knowing what to do, I look back at Ace. His face already a slight shade of purple and getting deeper and deeper by the second.
"Just get it over with."
With regret consuming my thoughts as well as my connection, I sigh heavily. I make sure to speak firmly, in order to get through to Luka when his wolf is in control.
"Luka, Grandpa was suffering, he wanted to die in the battle."
Softening his grip on Ace's neck slightly, Luka looks back to face me. Ace taking a much-needed breath, his face turning pink again.
"What do you mean Sophie."
With my chest growing tight, almost feeling like it's going to explode, I speak.
"Look, Luka. A few weeks after you left for Alpha Training, Grandfather went to see Aunt Sherry for a simple cough. Long story Short, he had severe Lung cancer. Despite the worst, Grandpa didn't want to seek treatment..."
"Why not?"
With another heavy sigh, my voice grows somber.
"Because my Grandmother, his mate, died from cancer. Every morning he had to watch the love of his life suffering, those drugs making her worse off than she already was. At her funeral, Grandpa vowed to her, he wouldn't go down the same road if he were to meet the same fate. After his mate's death, Grandpa struggled in and out of depression..."
My aunt jumps in and continues.
"The only dregs he took were life extenders, he wanted to live long enough to be here when you got back. When that happened, and the news broke about the impending battle, he stopped taking his meds entirely."
"Luka, My Grandpa had to sacrifice himself, I never would've gotten out of that jam by myself and I... I wanted him to die so that he wouldn't have to face a slow and painful death."
Slowly, Luka's own eyes turn back from yellow to his human's dark brown. Letting go of Ace's neck, he falls back onto me, Shelby and my aunt rushing to check on Ace.
After checking to see if Luka's okay, I turn my attention towards Ace.
"Is he okay?"
"Hard to say from here Little Sophie."
Looking back down towards Luka, he says to me in his tired normal voice.
"I'm sorry I got angry and lost control, Sophie."
"No need to be sorry, you couldn't help what happened. I would've done the same thing If I found out my worst enemy was the only one who could heal my wounds," I add. "Listen Luka, Sorry about not telling you about Grandfather."
"We'll talk about this later Sophie," I then feel Luka's body flinch sharply, his face going pale. "But right now the room's spinning."
"The room is spinning. Alright, let's get you back to bed then." "Elliot, you help me while Aunt Sherry and Shelby help Ace up and back to his own room."
Getting Luka back up, Elliot and I help him take a few steps towards our bed. Looking back over my shoulder, I watch my Aunt, Shelby, and Ace.
Aunt Sherry and Shelby go to try to help Ace stand up, but he won't put any weight through his left Shoulder, Shelby ends up having to support Ace a bit further down, helping him to stand up.
Aside from that and a bit of redness around his neck, Ace looks to be okay, he just might have a broken shoulder.
From behind me, I hear my aunt say.
"Okay, Ace lets go.".
"No, wait a second." "Hey, Sophie...That's one powerful Alpha you have there, watch out for him... and if he's willing to let me, I'll come back and heal the wounds on his front side too in a few days."
"Sure, sounds good Ace."
Turning back around, Elliot and I get Luka on his side of the bed. We both help him gently onto the mattress, making sure he now lays on his back and not on his stomach.
Putting the cover softly back over him, I kiss my mate on the forehead.
"Don't get too comfortable Luka. You're not going to have this bed to yourself for very long."
Luka smiles sleepily at me.
"Elliot, While Luka and I are preoccupied with our doings up here, could you..."
"Say no more Sophie, I'll water the house plants, sort the mail, and feed the fish."
"Great, thanks." "Now Luka, you wait a moment while I go to check if my Aunt and Shelby got Ace back to his bed okay."
Darting into Shelby's room quickly, I arrive just as Ace is getting back into bed himself, still not baring any weight through his left shoulder.
"Did you guys have any trouble getting him back in here?"
"No Sophie, they got me in here just fine. I can't put weight through my shoulder though, your aunt's about to look me over."
"Alright. Well if anyone needs me for anything I'll be in our room, taking a nap with Luka."
"Okay Little Sophie, see you later."
Walking back into our room, I get on my side of the bed and lay down. I resist the urge to curl up and wrap my arms around him because of his remaining wounds. In the end, I decide to just snuggle in closer, resting my head on his shoulder.
Closing my eyes and slowly breathing in Luka's fresh honey scent, I welcome the darkness, Ace's parting words running over and over on replay in my mind.
"That's one powerful Alpha you have there, watch out for him."
"Maybe there's hope for this alliance yet.
