Chapter 32
Previously, on Love bite.
For a moment, I feel sadness coming from Luka, but then he eyes the group of wolves that ended my grandfather's life. Luka's sadness quickly turns to anger and thoughts of revenge, he then lets out a loud snarl as he tears after the wolves, flying by me in the process.
In that moment, I feel something in his wolf change as his rage begins to take over. through the connection, I feel his remaining omega side slip away from his wolf, vanishing, almost like it was never even there to begin with. It's then I realize that after all this time, my mate was no longer and omega.
He is finally an Alpha, both inside, and out.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Now Sophie's P.O.V
The battle rages on, the monsoon of rain falling upon us turning the Meeting Valley into a giant mud pit. for a few hours now, we've done this. Battling it out, going toe to toe. With no end in sight and with neither side wanting to give way.
Luka and I never giving up or losing a step. in fact, the two of us are in the thick of it. So much so, the last time I saw my mate, was when he ran past me in pursuit of the group of the three Ruby Stone wolves that ended my Grandpa's life, he took all three of those wolves out soon after.
Luka, still feeling the pain of my Grandfather's death is now cutting down every Ruby Stone wolf in sight, his rage and anger making him fight like a wild animal.
Maybe I should've told him what was wrong with my Grandfather, he would be able to understand and be able to let it go.
I focus on the battle. I then search through the pack connections to find members of the pack that could use my help. Through the connections, far to my right, I see all three Omega brothers fighting against a large wolf. All three of the brothers are in the thick of it, they've got the wolf on the ground. I can see that each of the brothers is fighting a section of the wolf, Kevin has the front half, Kyle has the mid-section, and most surprisingly of all, Karl the youngest of the brothers has the very end.
With the wolf struggling underneath them, not wanting to give them an opening, the brothers are in for a long fight. Kyle and Karl are responsible for making sure the wolf doesn't get up and gain the upper hand. It warms my heart to see, if the wolf does try to make a move, it's Karl who quickly puts a stop to it
Looks like those training sessions with Luka have really started to pay off.
Suddenly a Ruby Stone wolf comes charging up to help his fallen pack member, aiming right for Karl. A whimper escapes my mouth.
With the two older brothers focused on ending the life of the first wolf, they can't defend their little brother from the attack of the second.
Within an instant, Andrew my head Warrior comes attacking the wolf from the side, knocking him to the ground before he even takes another step towards his target. The three brothers are too focused on the wolf they're attacking to react, but they can hear everything going on behind them. The two wolves down try to struggle for a moment, trying to avoid their fate, but soon, our boys get the upper hand and end it quickly.
As the four of them start to run off, Karl turns towards Andrew. "thanks for your help, Warrior Andrew."
"You're welcome, Karl, anytime kid."
The four of them then take off running their separate directions, Karl and his brothers going one way, and Andrew going in another.
I pipe in through the connection. "Well done you four."
I then look to my left, all the way across the Meeting Valley, I can see Michelle. the leader of the Hybrids slowly being overpowered by a large wolf. The wolf has its front paws on her shoulders, and it looks like he's trying to pull her down. Michelle struggles to stay on her feet but she's fighting a losing battle, the wolf's body pressed up against her back, making it impossible for her to turn around and use her knife.
I stop to think of what I could do. It's pointless, even if I were running at top speed, I wouldn't make it over there in time, but...I then get on the connection.
"Chris." "Quinn." They both connect right away. I then show them the situation at hand. A feeling of understanding washes over the two connections.
"We're on it Sophie," both father and son say in sync.
I turn my attention back to watching Michelle's battle as I start running again. Just when it looks like Michelle's legs are about to give out from under her, Chris and Quinn come charging in, attacking the wolf from the back, knocking Michelle to the ground. From the corner of my view, Maple comes rushing up and helps Michelle back to her feet.
Chris and Quinn tear into the wolf, growling and biting it as they do so. Chris does the most tearing, while Quinn does the snapping and growling. Not to be outdone by the fighting wolves, Michelle and Maple take up their knives, turnaround from where they're standing, and plunge them deep into the Ruby Stone wolf's chest. Chris and Quin are both a bit taken by surprise at the sight of the blades, but they're alright, taking a step back just as the blades come down. The Ruby Stone wolf's body stops struggling a few moments later.
That was close, we almost lost another pack member, which I don't want to happen, we've already lost enough for one day. I picture of my grandpa then flashes through my mind. I focus on Luka's link, still feeling his anger and rage bubbling up from within him. Through his eyes, all I can see is a haze of dark red.
Hearing whimpering and struggling up ahead of me, I snap out of my thoughts and start searching for the connection to find the source. Cody stands just a few feet in front of me, still on his feet but being attacked by a wolf. Cody's thoughts filling with worry for heather as he begins to tire, allowing the Ruby Stone wolf to get the upper hand.
My heart racing, I rush over before it's too late. I make it in time and plow into the side of the wolf, knocking him off Cody.
I then turn towards him.
"Cody!" I say, my voice booming in my own thoughts. "Get your head out of the clouds and get it back in the battle."
Cody whimpers and flattens his ears slightly. "Sorry Alpha, I'm just worried about Heather and the baby. I don't know what's wrong with me, I've just got a bad feeling about today."
"Because of your thoughts being clouded like that, you could've gotten yourself killed just now. If I wouldn't have been nearby to hear you, your baby wouldn't have a father to meet anymore" I tell him straight up. Seeing the look on Cody's face, I then lower my tone. "She's safe. Trust me, Cody, she'll be fine."
Cody nods and tears off after the wolf that almost killed him. This time, it's Cody who has the upper hand.
I then search the link again. Instantly, I wish I hadn't. Watching as Amanda gets into the fight of her life with a large Ruby Stone wolf, my heart then sinks.
The thought of little Victoria growing up without her mom or Greg growing old without his mate is enough to make me break down right there, but I stay strong.
Then it happens the battle reaches its climax, all the wolves in the Meeting Valley ganging up on each other, sending bloodshed everywhere. it's so loud now, I can't even hear my own thoughts.
Looks like the battle has come to ahead, and not in a good way. My own pack now overrun by the Ruby Stone forces.
I try to figure out what to do, one answer pops back into my mind.
kill Ace, it's the only way to end this on a good note for you and your pack.
I wish I knew where he was so that I don't have to waste time searching. It's then I have an idea of how to find him, but I've never tried using it like this before. I get a picture of Ace from my memory and place it in my mind, and just focus on it.
My Alpha senses kicking in, activating immediately. My eyes blazing past the raging fight, trying to find their target. Within a few seconds, I have him in my sights again. Turns out, he's all the way across the Meeting Valley behind me, battling with one of my wolves. A few seconds later, Ace takes his jaws and crushes the wolf's throat, killing him instantly.
That's the last wolf he'll ever kill.
I turn on my heels and start to run towards him, my paws sinking into the muddy abyss beneath me. Ace spots me, turning to the right and trying to lose me. that won't work, I have my enemy in my site, and this time I'm not letting him escape
I get to the spot where I saw him, jumping over the body of my own fallen pack member. Ace's scent fills my nose. He's Just in front of me, becoming a little dot in my vision. I run faster, my heart pounding against my rib cage, my inner wolf egging me on and wanting to take control. I give in slightly, letting her power fuel through me as I run.
Ace runs into the hoard of raging wolves, zigging and zagging, trying to get away. A few Ruby Stone wolves block my path. I blitz attack them, harder and faster this time, my legs are on fire. Little by little, the small dot of Ace Summers becomes a black figure in my field of vision.
That's it, tire yourself out. Less work for me.
Little by little, I close in on Ace. He's so close to me now, I can hear his breath as he runs. Realizing he won't be able to outrun me, he turns around and growls, baring his teeth at me. Ace must know what's about to happen, and he knows it's not going to be pretty. I come barring towards him at the speed of a fired gun, my eyes full of rage.
When we clash, I attack him with everything I've got. I fight with all the rage I have inside of me, not just for the pack members I've lost, but also for all the members of Ruby Stone that have lost their lives. I have seen enough bloodshed in one day, then any other person would've seen in their lifetime.
As we're fighting, I notice that something's wrong with Ace, he's not giving it his all. Is it possible that he's just trying to get me to let my guard down so that he can spring something on me? No, that's not it, he's just been weakened even more by the mate madness. taking my chance, I go for Ace's face. Ace lets out a sharp whimper of pain, my mouth once again filling with the taste of blood, it's a taste you'll never get used to.
"That's for what you did to Luka" I growl, our jaws clashing.
Ace tries to get one or two bites in on me, but I stop him as soon as he moves in. Instead, this little move ends up backfiring on him because every time he misses with a bite, I'm able to come in with two of my own and hit the target.
"And this one's for all my pack members you've killed today." '"And this one's for all of your pack members who you've hurt or killed."
This is not like Ace Summers, not the one that I know anyway. To miss on an attack, even a few simple bites, it almost seems taboo for him. I look up and take a good look at him, a really good look.
Empty, his eyes are empty. They're nothing but black pits, no signs of life.
Seeing my chance when Ace misses a step, I take it, flipping him onto his back. Me getting on top of him, I quickly make sure to pin his back legs down with my own. I learned that lesson the hard way, both from Shelby and from Ace Summers himself during the fight when I was trying to save Luka.
Speaking of which.
Searching the connection, I find Shelby helping my Aunt take care of the wounded, the little Ruby Stone wolf I found safely with them.
Snapping out of my thoughts, I look at Ace, his soulless eyes looking back at me.
"Well here we are again, but this time you won't be able to kick me off, no matter how hard you try." I feel Ace struggling against my back legs. I push harder and Ace stops struggling.
"I'm sorry it has to end this way. I would've liked to help you, and it isn't like I didn't try a few times. I truly believe that you would've been a great friend to Luka and me if things would've turned out differently. But now I've got to protect my true mate and my pack. Any last words?"
Ace then looks deeper into my eyes, his eyes still dark and cold pits as I look into them. As I'm watching, however, something strange starts to happen. Within a second after Ace looked into my eyes, his own eyes start to soften. They appear to have a bit of color in them when a moment before there wasn't any, it's as if life itself has been poured back into them. Ace then relaxes, his body going limp.
From somewhere deep within my mind, a rush of thoughts come rushing in, as if an invisible wall has come down. I search their connections, trying to determine who these strangers are. Stunned I realize they're not from my own pack, but rather they're the wolves of Ruby Stone, the wolves we were just fighting with only a moment before. At the same time, I notice something else, both sides have stopped fighting altogether. Taken aback, all the wolves are shocked at how and why they're able to hear each other.
"Sophie," Ace says. "Get off me."
Ace's response takes me by surprise., does he actually think I'm going to fall for that?
"Not a chance" I growl.
I then go in to end it, placing my front paw on his chest, exposing Ace's throat. Ace then starts to struggle again, this time shaking his head.
"No, Sophie, I'm being serious." He takes in a breath. "I've finally found my mate, she's a member of your pack, that's why both packs can hear each other now." He takes in another breath. "You were right."
Those last few words get my attention, Ace would never admit to something like that, let alone to my face. I look into his eyes, this time full of their brown color. There's no deception in them, he's being truthfully honest.
"Yeah, for maybe once in his life."
"Art, Shut up for a second."
"is there anything you'd like to add Ace?" I ask, looking at him patiently waiting.
With a slight huff, Ace looks up at me. "Fine, I give Sophie, you and your pack win."
"Anything else, hmm?" I ask him, taking my paw off Ace's chest.
With a deeper huff, Ace speaks again. "You and Luka make a beautiful couple." "Anything else your highness?"
"Nope, that's all I wanted to hear you say."
Getting off Ace and allowing him to sit up, I let out a howl of victory, declaring us the winners. All Emerald Stone Pack wolves howl with me in sync, sending a loud song up to the storm clouds.
Suddenly everything's cut short when out of the corner of my eye, I see Keith charge at and tackle the large brown wolf, the Head Warrior that he and Elliot fought together earlier. The wolf's caught off guard.
Ace, who's just got back to his feet watches the situation at hand in front of us, not knowing what's going on, but I can feel it clearly.
"Lorenzo." Ace growls. "Hold on, I'm coming to Help you."
Before running off, I hold him back. "Don't Ace, Keith's got a good reason" I tell him.
Keith attacks with all his anger, growling, biting, and snapping at his target. The wolf known as Lorenzo not even attempting to fight back, in fact, he's got his tail tuck between his legs in submission to Keith. It's only when Lorenzo's on the ground and screaming in pain does Keith finally stop with his attack. Keith then shifts back, his eyes full of rage.
"Don't you ever hurt her again!" he yells in a tone I haven't heard him use before.
Lorenzo looks up at Keith, his face bleeding. "I won't, I swear."
Just when it looks like Keith's about to go in for round two, Elliot shifts back to his human form and comes to break it up. Ignoring Ace and me, Elliot walks over to Keith and places a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"Leave him, man, he's gotten the memo."
Keith then huffs, turning around and walking away. Lorenzo shifts back, his face wounded and red from the pooling blood. Stepping a bit closer, Elliot holds out a gentle hand to Lorenzo, pulling him up. Giving Elliot a nod, Lorenzo walks slowly back to rejoin his friends.
Elliot turns towards me and gives me a nod but ignoring Ace once again.
Cody's the next one to shift back. He sprints over towards me, his face filled with worry.
"Sophie, I need to go check on Heather, she needs me."
I nod.
"Understood." "Cody, Keith, go back to the house, check on your mates, make sure they're okay."
Wasting no time at all. The two brothers turn around and tear back towards the house, without ever looking back.
I turn towards Chris and Quinn.
"You two." "Go tell Debby and them at Den House that they can end their lockdown."
"Yes, Ma'am Alpha" the two of them grumble in sync before running off.
Turning back to who's left of my pack, my attention turns to the question at hand. Which one of my girls has become the new Luna of the Ruby Stone Pack?
Turning back to Ace, I then ask him. "Do you know your mate's name?"
Shaking his head, Ace replies. "No, I'm afraid not Sophie, I only got an image from your mind right before you were going to end me, right before the wall between our packs came down."
"Well, how can I help you find her if you don't even know her first name?"
Ace thinks about it for a moment and then says. "Think about the first time we met Sophie."
At that moment, I flash back to the dream I had on the morning of the last full moon. Ace said the same thing right before my dream ended, it can't be just a coincidence. I zone out, trying to find the clue to solving this mystery.
I start searching through the memories of that day, trying to find what I'm supposed to be looking for. At the same time, I start looking back through my thoughts, leading back to when I tracked and fought Ace, trying to figure out who I might have thought about.
Who did I think about?
At first, nothing comes to mind. There was nothing special about the day Ace and I met, nothing was out of the ordinary. It was just a normal day. These are my feelings at first, then I take a closer look.
It's then that something clicks, and everything comes together all at once.
There was one thing that was off about that day or missing from it rather. There was a reason I had to meet Ace at the pack Hospital after he got bit by that snake, it was because aunt Sherry's head nurse was still in shock that I had the Alpha gene and took the day off, I was filling in for her. The same nurse I thought was doing such a good job helping my aunt take care of the wounded only a few seconds before I found Ace.
I remember that day, I couldn't stop thinking about the person in question. Not only was she my Aunt Sherry's head nurse, she was also my best friend. I must've let one of my thoughts slip Ace catching a glimpse and forming a connection. But instead of forming it with the other girl, he formed it to me by mistake.
As soon as I find the last piece, the whole puzzle fits together.
Excited about my discovery, I turn back towards Ace.
"I think I might know who it is."
Ace's ears perk up. "Well then, lead the way." Ace then gets to his feet, starting to follow.
"Let's go," I tell him starting to walk myself.
I only get one step in before I'm snapped out of my actions by a noise that sounds like a groan of pain. I turn. There I see Ace, he's standing there in human form, gritting his teeth and gripping at his chest. I can see that he's fighting to stay up, his face looking pale. Suddenly, Ace's legs give out from under him and he falls to his knees.
I shift back, running back over towards him.
I kneel beside him, Ace now rolled over onto his back
"Ace, what's wrong?"
Looking into my eyes, Ace speaks with another pain filled groan. "Chest hurts."
I try to think of why this may be. Earlier in the battle, did he get hit in the chest hard? No. When Ace and I fought, I didn't hit him in the chest, did I? No that's not it either.
Looking down at Ace, something dawns on me. I remember today's date on the kitchen calendar as I walked in this morning. March 29th. My stomach then drops, this is no normal chest pain. Today is Ace's twentieth birthday, he's slowly starting to die.
The Ruby Stone pack wolves start to worry, their connections flooding with concern.
There isn't much time.
I reach out, gently taking Ace's hand in my own. From the other end of Luka's connection, I can feel him struggling to hold back a growl.
"Easy Luka."
"Hold on Ace," I tell him reassuringly, looking over my shoulder for a moment. "Everything's going to be okay."
Ace's grip then tightens around my hand like a vise. Turning back to look at him, he speaks,
"Sophie. whatever you do, don't leave me alone, I'm begging you."
I look down at him, this time looking into his eyes. "I won't leave Ace, I promise."
I link up to my aunt Sherry, she picks up only a second later.
"Aunt Sherry, Ace needs help, it's an emergency. It's his twentieth birthday, the mate madness is taking him."
I want my Aunt to come over to help me, but also to test my theory as well.
A few moments later my aunt comes rushing over, kneeling on Ace's other side she then starts looking Ace over, careful not to move him too much.
I'm a bit confused.
"Where's Shelby, where's Shelby?" I ask her frantically.
"She's a few moments behind me, why?"
I can't find the words, I don't have time. I look up just in time to see the top of Shelby's red hair, I then hear the sounds of her feet rushing towards us.
As Shelby comes closer, her face coming into view, I hold my breath. Shelby stops, her eyes landing on Ace's. Shelby's legs go weak, sinking her to her feet. Ace shifting slightly on to his stomach, still grimacing slightly as he reaches out and strokes the side of Shelby's face.
Taken aback by the new sensation I can feel from inside of her, Shelby pulls back from Ace's touch, not knowing what to do. Shelby's now at a loss for words. She turns towards me for the answer.
I get it. When you've been alone for a long time, only to then find love, it can be a scary thing.
I let out my breath, I was right
"That's what the Mate connection feels like."
Shelby doesn't say anything, still looking at Ace in shock. My Aunt looks at me from the other side of Ace.
"Are you serious Sophie?"
Nodding, I let go of Ace's hand.
Aunt Sherry, looking over towards me, calls out. "Hey, we need a stretcher over here!" She then looks down at Ace, now in full medical mode. "Ace, you need to roll back on to your back."
Ace does what he's told, rolling back over, still groaning but making it.
My aunt then turns towards Shelby, who still hasn't moved. "Shelby, snap out of it and help us, my aunt orders.
Shaking her head and clearing her mind, Shelby gets back on her feet, Joining my aunt at her side. Though she may now seem calmer on the outside, on the inside, I can feel she's still in shock over what has happened.
Seeing the medical team coming out of the trees, we prepare for what comes next. No sooner does the medical team show up, then does Elliot. He comes over, kneeling down at my side.
"What can I do to help Sophie?' he asks.
"Carry the stretcher after we get Ace in." "We're going to need a lot of wolves."
"Will do Sophie." Elliot then gets closer to my ear. "Real quickly Sophie, how's Shelby taking it?"
"Umm, I don't know yet."
The medical team puts the stretcher on the ground flat then, the four of us prepare ourselves one last time, my aunt then taking control.
"Alright Ace, stay as still as you can for us. We don't want to drop you." "Okay, Elliot, Shelby, ready your hands."
Very gently, we slide our hands under Ace's body, Shelby hesitating slightly. Once we all nod, aunt Sherry speaks again.
"Okay, are we ready to lift and transfer?"
All three of us give another nod.
"Alright, I'm going to start counting. On three, we all lift. Ready? One, two, three. Lift."
working as a team, the four of us manage to lift Ace up and start moving him over to the stretcher. Realizing something scary, I take note. I'm not saying Ace isn't heavy by any means, but he is a lot lighter than I thought. Ace really has lost a lot of weight, just like Misty told us.
Getting to the stretcher, we lower Ace gently down. Getting Ace into place, my aunt then calling for the others. Surprisingly, Luka and some of the other members of our pack come over, even some of the Ruby Stone wolves take part.
Moving to the side, Luka takes the spot beside me, being joined by a Ruby Stone wolf only a moment later. I look towards Luka. Just by looking at his face, I can tell that he doesn't want to do this, but he doesn't have much of a choice.
After being joined by a few more people, aunt Sherry speaks up. "Alright, ready?" "One, two, three, lift,"
Pulling up on all sides, we all get the stretcher off the ground, Ace along with it.
One by one, moving in sync walking through the mud and the slush, we start to move ace out of the Meeting Valley. The Ruby Stone wolves make a whole for us when we have to cut through, all of them with concerned looks on their faces.
I look up at them and speak.
"Meet us back at our house later on today."
They all nod understandingly.
Looking up at the sky, I see more storm clouds gathering, the sky getting even darker. hopefully, that's not a sign of what's to come. I now look around the Meeting Valley and seeing all the downed wolves scattered. Spotting my Grandfather's body lying amongst them, the feeling of dread washes over me one last time. I can't just leave them here
Connecting the link, Maloney speaks up. "Don't worry Alpha, she says reassuring. "You do what you have to do with Ace. Suzie and I will round up the wounded and the dead, you can count on us."
Smiling, I respond with. "I know I always can, thanks, girls."
Looking out from the corner of my eye, I can see Ace struggling to look up at me, I make it easier and look down towards him.
"I just want-wanted to say I'm sorry, Sophie, for everything I've put you and Luka through."
Smiling at him, I just say. "Don't worry about it, our packs are united now, we help each other out, it's what we do."
No matter what has happened or what will happen with our packs in the near future, two things are clear. I'm glad this little feud between Ace, Luka, and I is finally over. I'm also glad that this battle didn't end like I thought it would.
Only now, I just hope we're not too late.
==========================================
Finn. There you have it guys, the battle is finally over. How did I do? Did it all turn out like you thought it would? I'm sorry for all the Ace Haters who wanted him to die, that's not how I roll. The cat's out of the bag about Shelby's fate, I am so relieved I can finally let y'all in on it. Ever since Shelby came out and told me her story, I knew I wanted to pair her with Ace. I've been chomping at the bit to share this bit of information with my readers, and now it's finally known.
How do you feel about the battles end, did you all see it coming?
What do you think the now holds for the two packs?
How do you feel about what has fallen on Shelby?
I would like to dedicate this chapter to @SpaceWolf21. Even though you're not going to be happy with it, you're the first one to guess who Shelby's mate was going to be, congrats.
