Chapter 31
Hey guys, if your reading this, it means I've survived writing chapter 30 through 40. I wrote this chapter after getting over a three month battle with writer's block, in which I was the victor, hopefully. I couldn't have done this without my friend and fellow writer @FallingMagician. We've been throwing ideas around, and I ended up using hers as a blueprint.
===
Previously, on Love bite.
We're ready.
In a flash, the Valley comes alive with the sounds of ferocious growls and blood thirsty snapping jaws, as Ace and his pack come rushing towards us, their paws rapidly thudding against the ground.
Within a second of Ace making his first move, we make our advance, running flat out to meet in the middle of the Valley in a bloodbath just as the rain starts coming down.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Now Sophie's P.O.V
The sound that follows is deafening, the sound of jaws clashing and snapping all at once at such a volume, about the only sound the others and I can hear is the quickly melting snow as it makes one more crunch under our feet. Wolves are fighting all around me, trying to get the upper hand. and not just werewolves, but the Human's and Hybrid's too. It might seem a bit overwhelming to some, but too us it sends Ace a powerful message, we came to fight.
As I come into the thick of it I try to keep an eye on Ace and for a moment, I have him in my sights, but then a force blindside me and I lose my target amongst the other wolves. I look up to see what struck me, turns out it wasn't a what, it was a who. A Ruby Stone wolf, a female. She's pure gray, and her eyes are rich blue.
When I hit the ground, the other wolf on top of me, but I knock her off, before she can make her next move.
"Sophie, like it or not, you're coming home with, Alpha Ace," the she wolf says, baring her teeth and snarling at me.
She only gets a threatening glare in response.
"No, I'm not," I retort, baring my own teeth and attacking her.
I end up getting a mouth full of the wolf's fur and skin on her neck. She lets out a sharp yawl but shakes loose of my grip. The wolf then tries to do the same and go in for my neck, but I stop her, clashing my teeth with hers. The wolf then backs up and then has a go for my face. I move, but not before one of her mini dagger-like teeth finds a bit of skin on my head.
Ouch.
I let out a tiny whimper.
"Sophie, are you alright?" ask a few worried voices over the pack, mind link.
Dread and worry then flood over the connection.
I knock the she-wolf off me, our jaws clashing again.
"Yes everybody, I'm alright."
"Do you need help, Alpha?" a few of the voices ask in sync.
"No guys, I've got this," I say, the sound of our snapping jaws growing louder and louder by the second.
We snap jaws, once, twice more.
Suddenly, I stumble back. The she-wolf ceases her chance and goes in for the tackle. I must move quickly, I think back to our training.
"Think about it this way, Sophie," the she-wolf slightly growls at me, going in for the tackle. "If you come with us now, you won't have to watch the rest of your little pack get ripped apart."
That did it.
I roll over onto my back, my teeth connecting with her neck, this time on the bottom. The move startles the wolf, causing her to look up and try to pull away. I let go, only a moment later to aim my powerful hind legs and send them into the wolf's gray stomach. The move knocks most of the wind out of the wolf, sending her flying off me with one sharper yawl.
I get back to my feet and shake myself off.
I hear the other wolf land with a thud somewhere on the battlefield some distance away from me. Along with the initial impact, I hear a slight crack. maybe I broke something, I think to myself. My kick wasn't strong enough to kill her, it least, I don't think it was. But I'm not standing here to find out.
I take off running.
I start blitz attacking any Ruby Stone wolf in my sight, no matter who it is. The metallic taste of blood enters my mouth as I do so. Each one of my attacks lasting only a second or two, maybe three if they're being tricky. It's not because I want to shed the most blood, it's because there're simply too many wolves to attack one on one. You must get your attack in quickly before they have a chance to strike back.
"How're we doing guys?" I ask, checking in as I continue to fiercely attack.
"We're doing great Sophie," three voices reply in sync. Then, I feel the feeling of strong sorrow come over the connection.
"Unfortunately, Sophie, we have already lost two members of our own pack" Art informs, his voice coming over the link, sounding louder than the others.
Dread and gilt then flood my own body for a moment.
Already, in the mere minutes since this battle began, we've lost two of our members. Then, the million-dollar question enters my mind. How many more members of my family will I lose by the time this day is up and this bloody battle is over?
"I don't know Sophie" Art admits, uncertainty in his tone.
Then after I finish attacking one more Ruby Stone wolf, I stop for just a moment, I shake my head to clear my mind before I start my attacks again. It happens during these times, just suck it up and keep fighting. After all, it could be worse. All of us would've been killed by now, and I would be on my way to Ruby Stone.
Art stops talking to me, now fighting a one on one battle with a Ruby Stone wolf I don't recognize.
Letting Art do his thing, I try to focus on the most important member of the pack. Well, for me at least.
"Luka. Luka, you there?"
"Yes, Sophie, it's so good to hear your voice again" Replies Luka, his spirit uplifting a bit.
When Luka now talks to me with this new connection, it's like there're no other voices clouding my mind. His voice is as clear as it always has been.
"How are you doing?"
"I'm doing great" he replies sarcastically. Luka then pauses, blitz attacking a Ruby stone wolf that was coming after him. "Hah, feels good to stretch my muscles." Then worry comes over his connection. "What about you, Sophie?" I heard you got hung up with one of Ace's wolves. Are you okay?"
"Yes, Luka. I'm alright. She gave me a cut, but it's okay" I reply to him, the worry inside Luka growing.
"Oh, Sophie."
This is followed by another quick pause.
"It's alright. It's just a small one, it's already begun to heal." Trust me, Luka, if I would've been killed you would've known it."
We both go quiet then, each of us wanting to focus on the fight.
I look to my left, then to my right. Suddenly out of the corner of my eye, I spot my Aunt Sherry facing off with a good-sized male Ruby Stone wolf. I slow down and make a turn.
I want to keep an eye on this.
As I pass them the first time, I notice the wolf and my Aunt are circling each other in a kind of deadly dance.
Abruptly, the circling stops. My Aunt readies herself with her knife, the wolf prepares himself, his fur standing on end as they look at each other eye to eye. The wolf lunges for her. Being quick afoot, my Aunt steps aside, dodging the bullet. My Aunt then whips around, grasping the knife firmly, preparing to sink it into the wolf's chest.
I then get a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach, I stop running for a moment.
And then, just as my Aunt Sherry's about to go in for the kill, it happens. Another Ruby Stone wolf comes barreling towards her, successfully knocking Aunt Sherry off her feet, pinning her down and knocking her weapon out of her hands. The wolf has a rabid look in its eye as it snaps its jaws, saliva flying with every snap.
My Aunt's hands are now the only thing holding back the wolf's mouth, trying to Keep it from killing her. Without warning, her hands slip. The wolf licks its teeth before placing one of its large paws firmly on Aunt Sherry's chest, forcing her to expose her throat.
My stomach drops. I start running towards them.
A picture of my mother's face quickly flashes through my mind. This can't be happening. I've already lost my mother and my brothers, I can't lose my Aunt Sherry to.
A whimper bubbles from my throat as the wolf opened its jaws, Aunt Sherry squirming beneath the weight of the wolf., as the wolf descended its open jaws.
"No!" I growl deeply.
Just as I'm about to jump into the fray, another growl, a much louder one can be heard. Out of no where, my Uncle Liam jumps out, tackling the wolf to the ground, growling a and snapping his jaws loudly before ending the wolf's life with the help of his powerful canines. I change targets, going after the first wolf, making quick work of him with my own canines
Once all's said and done, my Uncle and I look at each other for a moment before looking over towards Aunt Sherry, she looks like she's in shock. After she catches her breath for another moment, Aunt Sherry gets back to her feet. My Uncle walks over and licks his mate's cheek, looking her over and checking to see if she's okay.
"I'm okay, Liam, thanks to you," she tells him, just below a whisper.
After a moment more of this, my Aunt then turns towards me.
"Thank you Sophie" she says to me in the same tone of voice she gave my Uncle.
I give her a nod.
I then connect a mind link to her, my mind focused on the battle once again.
"Take care of the wounded. You and Shelby start carrying the injured back behind the tree line to get them into the hands of the medical teams," I instruct with another nod.
"Understood Sophie," she replies.
I disconnect the link.
Aunt Sherry quickly picks up her knife before she and my uncle both run off and continue to join in the battle.
***
As time passes the sprinkle of raindrops that we had earlier has turned into a full-blown downpour, the water droplets visible on my back and dripping down my body.
I've just done in my second Ruby Stone wolf; poor guy didn't even know what hit him. I continue to run, looking for any more Ruby Stone wolves that I can start blitz attacking, wanting to even the odds a bit more. Suddenly, I can feel that Jayson Bay is being overpowered by a wolf that I can see is too big for even him. The feeling of dread washes over me once again. There's nothing I can do to help him, he's all the way across the Meeting Valley.
Suddenly, I see somebody come to Jayson's defense, knocking the wolf off him. At the same time, I hear the thoughts and can feel the emotions of the wolf in question. It's Art, tackling the wolf from Jayson, coming to the rescue of his best friend. The two wolves roll over each other, growling snapping, trying to gain the upper hand. By the time the dust settles, the Ruby Stone wolf has the advantage. He stands over Art, mouth open and teeth exposed like he's about to go in for the kill. Art lays there on his back, snapping at his enemy's neck, struggling to get back to his feet, but to no avail.
Wow, this wolf must be strong. Not even Art can fight him off, and he's one of the best fighters there is...
My thoughts are interrupted abruptly when I feel a stir come over Jayson's connection and anger bubble up from deep within him.
Not to be outdone by his best friend, Jayson quickly gets to his feet and rushes over, giving the Ruby Stone wolf a hard fist to the nose. The wolf lets out a loud whimper as he's sent flying off Art from the force of the punch, landing a few feet away. Seizing his chance, Art quickly gets back to his feet, snarling as he tackles the Ruby stone wolf for the second time, getting on top of him. The wolf struggles, trying to throw Art off him, but stops when Jayson stabs the knife deep into the wolf's chest. At the same time, Art bends down and snaps the wolf's neck.
The wolf's body stops shaking a few moments later, but only after his eyes close does' art get off. Jayson and art then take a few steps away, turning to look at each other in acknowledgment. the two of them then nod to each other in a silent thank you.
Not bad for teamwork, especially since Art usually fights alone.
I check in with them at the same time Dylan does.
"Jayson, Art, you guys okay?" "You okay little bro?"
On the connection, Dylan's thoughts are filled with worry and concern for his brother. while on the other end, Arts are now filled with annoyance.
Same as always.
"Yes, Dylan, I'm fine" "Yes Alpha, we're all fine."
Art and Jayson then run off, but something's still bothering Dylan, his thoughts are still filled with worry and concern. I connect with him.
"What's up?"
With a slight sigh, Dylan speaks. "I've just got a lot on my shoulders in this battle" he replies the worry bubbling up a bit.
"Worried about Art? Don't worry, he's one of the best fighters in the pack."
"I just-I just don't want him doing anything stupid that might get him killed."
"Don't worry Dylan your brother has a good head on his shoulders." I then pause to think about out it. "I'm not sure if he uses it at the right time sometimes, but trust me, Dylan, he'll do fine"
"It's not just that Alpha." Dylan then pauses for a second and then continues. "I'm not only having to look out for Art but for Angie as well."
My attention then turns to Angie for a moment at the mention of her name.
"How's she doing?" I ask.
"She's holding her own, surprisingly, I've got her in my sight."
"You need to stop worrying about Art so much, he'll be fine. Instead, you need to worry about Angie and keep her safe" I tell him.
Dylan then disconnects the link, charging after a Ruby Stone wolf that's attempting to go after Angie.
I start running again. As I do, I start to pick up emotions coming over Elliot's connection. Unlike the ones I'm used to, these are foreign for someone like him. Searing rage and anger than bubble up from within him. Through his eyes, I can see it's directed at one wolf in particular, not only that I can see red. Suddenly, Elliot charges at the large Ruby Stone wolf responsible for his anger. It's not Ace, but to my surprise, it's the head Warrior of Ruby Stone.
Confusion then crosses over my mind for a second. Why would Elliot go after a target like that? The kid may be a little boneheaded at times, but even he's not that foolish. Then another thought comes to mind. Elliot wouldn't think of pulling a stunt like this, unless... Unless he has a good reason to. And then I see it, the reason for the risky move. The Ruby stone wolf is the same one I saw beating up on Alex the day Keith first found her.
Figures.
The great solid brown wolf is at first taken by surprise. Elliot comes in, his jaws snapping and growling, trying to make him pay for what he's done. But this doesn't last long, however, and because of the size difference between the two of them, the other wolf is quickly able to get the upper hand and overpower Elliot, biting him in the face a few times. Elliot whimpers sharply and the wolf growls loudly, baring his sharp teeth.
"Big mistake kid."
I see a flash of gray. Suddenly out of nowhere, the Head Warrior flies off of Elliot, and then lands with a heavy sounding thud. A dazed Elliot quickly gets back to his feet and turns to see who's saved him from certain death. At first, the picture's fuzzy, but soon, the image becomes as crystal clear in his mind as it does in mine. The wolf that came to Elliot's rescue, was none other than Keith Grim.
Keith tackled the wolf off Elliot and is now fighting the large wolf off single-handedly. At the start, Keith does manage to get a few bites in here and there, but it soon becomes clear to Elliot and me that this wolf is even too strong for even a head Beta like Keith. Keith then whimpers, his strength draining fast, he looks at Elliot, though Elliot can't see his face.
"Take care of Alex for me," Keith says in a somber tone.
From deep inside Elliot, the deepest part of him I've ever been to before, I feel something come undone. All the hate, resentment, and fear for both what he's done in his past to Luka and what he might do to Alex quickly dissipates at the very moment Keith's words tickle his ear.
"Hey!" Elliot growls, baring his teeth.
Elliot then comes barreling in, attacking the wolf on his blind side and getting back into the fight. The wolf then turns his head, giving Keith time to get back to his feet. Keith then attacks the wolf from the front, while Elliot still attacks from the side. I pick up speed, wanting to focus on my own battle situation. As I do, I pick up some chatter on Keith and Elliot's connections.
"Why did you join back in the fight to help me, Elliot?"
"I didn't want to leave Alex without a mate. her heart's been broken so many times, I couldn't stand to see it broken another. And because it was the right thing to do." Elliot's curiosity then peaks. "Why did you come in to save me, Keith?"
"Because I didn't want my mate or my future Alpha to go on without their big brother." Keith then thinks about it for a moment. "Besides, I think those little ankle biters at Den House would kill me if I would've let their favorite playmate die, they'd tear me limb from limb."
Now that's something I'd pay to see.
I've run now for about five minutes. I must slow down, the muddy slush thrown up by both sides making it hard to see. I look around, seeing a shape out in front of me, I approach it with caution. When I get up close, my heart then sinks. It's a young wolf, newly shifted, laying hurt. As I get up even closer, I can smell that he's a Ruby Stone wolf, but Ruby Stone or not, he still needs looking after. The open wound on his side and paw requiring immediate medical attention.
Feeling my breath fanning his face, the young wolf's eyes open. He lets out a small whimper of fear, I try to take on the tone my mother used to use when dealing with scared pups.
"It's okay, I'm not going to attack you. Just play dead like you were and you won't get picked off by one of the other wolves" I tell him quietly.
I know some might think it's wrong of me to do so, but I've got to get this juvenile wolf a Pack Doctor. I get on the link to my Aunt, she picks up right away. I don't let her answer though, I just start speaking.
"Aunt Sherry you're needed, there's a young wounded Ruby Stone wolf at my location, he needs care asap."
"Sophie, I don't think...
"Alpha's orders Aunt Sherry. Now, he needs help, and I'm going to help him... Sneak over here if you and a medical team have to, just get here as soon as you can."
My Aunt Sherry then lets out a sigh. "Alright Sophie, we'll do what we can, just let us get over there."
"Okay, thank you."
I then feel Aunt Sherry smile. "You know, you're just like your mother."
I disconnect the link and then look out ahead of me at the muddied-up battleground, wanting to take note of how the pack's doing. My eyes land on a small silver-gray wolf, it's one of ours. Eden. He's just standing out in the open, his body frozen, like if he were stuck in glue. Eden's eyes are wide and full of pity. I then look to see what he's up against. Not one but two wolves stand before him, both of them also gray.
I turn back towards Eden. I link into him to find out what's happening. Is he scared? No matter, Eden shouldn't be standing there like a sitting duck, he's going to get himself killed.
Suddenly, a new emotion comes over his link, but it's not one I was expecting. It's not one of fear or dread, it's love. The love on his connection quickly turns to pity, pity for what he might have to do. I look back at the two wolves standing before Eden, I can now see that one is bigger and darker than the other, they both have blue eyes. the two bigger wolves look like they could attack at any moment, but if that's the case, why haven't they? Why hasn't Eden?
I then look closer at the legs of the two wolves, both pairs are shaking like leaves in the wind, almost like they're afraid to make the first move. I then look over at Eden's legs, only to find them shaking as well, but his are shaking twice as bad. It's almost like the three wolves don't even want to fight each other. But why would that be so? Unless. As the thought crosses my mind it then clicks into place.
They're Eden's parents.
I keep calm. I must think fast, I need to do something before someone comes along and knocks all three of them out. I then look down at the Ruby Stone wolf pup, now with his eyes closed. I don't want to leave him exposed like this, but I have no choice, I must do this. For Eden's sake. As carefully as I can, I jump over the pup's body and then turn back towards him for a moment.
Hang tight young one.
I start running towards them, my fur standing up on end, barreling past Eden and bumping into his parents. I then link up to Eden. "Eden get your head back in the game" I growl at him. Shaking his head and realizing what has happened, Eden quickly gets the memo and sends me a silent thank you as he runs off to battle other wolves. My work here being done, I take off running, Eden's parents hot on my heels, but they're quickly distracted by other members of my pack who come charging at them.
"Thanks for the help you guys," I tell them over the connection.
I then look back at the spot where the Ruby Stone pup was laying, only to find my Aunt scooping him up in her arms. At least I know he'll be safe for the time being.
I let out a huff. Sending a pup into battle, what has Ace Summers come to?
***
I continue to run, still blitz attacking any Ruby Stone wolf I come across. The rain now pours from the sky, turning the meeting Valley into a giant mud pit. My paws no longer make thuds when they hit the earth, but rather, a slight splash. The situation is made worse by the fact that the ground itself is wet with a slick mixture of plain water and mud, which creates a slipping hazard. A few of my pack members have already died from this very reason. Since the wolves couldn't get a grip quickly, the Ruby Stone wolves were able to get the upper hand and kill them.
Suddenly I'm snapped out of my thoughts by a feeling like I'm being followed, I turn around. Sure enough, a Ruby Stone wolf is not far behind. I think about just turning around and ending it right there, but then something else crosses my mind. Just like with pretty much everything in life, where there's one, there's probably more. I look to my left, then look to my right. Just as I thought, there're two more on each side of me, they're going to try to corner me, or at least cut me off.
Very clever.
I turn my head around when I hear paw thuds ahead and closing in. Suddenly, out of seemingly nowhere. A Ruby Stone wolf jumps out in front of me, baring its teeth, forcing me to stop. The four wolves start to circle around me, cutting off my escape. There's no way I'll be able to fight my way out of this. First off, all four of them are bigger and stronger than I am, not to mention, they're all males. Secondly, it'd be four on one, the odds of me coming out of a fight like that alive are slim.
Of the four wolves now circling me, three of them are light brown and dark brown, while the other one is silver. The silver wolf in question then speaks. He's smaller than the other three, about Luka's size.
"Sophie, I think it would be easier on you if you just stop running from the inevitable, and just come quietly. If you don't come with us willingly, Alpha Ace has already given members of our pack permission to wound you slightly to make you more cooperative."
It's when the wolf says this, that I remember something. Ace wants to kill Luka and the rest of the pack, but he wants to bring me back alive so that I can become his Luna, and to cure his mate madness. He isn't dumb enough to risk my safety because of this. Maybe I do have a shot of coming out of this little pickle alive.
I then bare my teeth at the wolves, pinning my ears back. "Then you and Ace will have to take me back as a wounded corpse because I'm not going anywhere."
Even though the odds are slim, I've got to try to get out of this. Luka's my true mate, and mate madness or not, even Ace Summers can't change that. Not now, not ever. I can't give up now, I owe it to Luka, and if I die trying, then at least I'll die fighting for what I believe in.
I hear a slight huff. "Then I'm sorry Sophie, you leave us no other choice" the gray Ruby Stone wolf growls.
The four wolves start closing in, two from the front, and two the back. The two in front of me then start to hover over me, casting dark shadows over my fur. I crouch down, coiling my body and readying to spring, aiming for the first wolf's neck. Even though I'm confident in my abilities, the odds are still against me.
Well, wish me luck Luka. If I don't make it out of this alive, you were a good friend, but an even better mate.
These are the last thoughts to go through my mind as I wait for someone to make the first move.
It doesn't come.
Suddenly I hear foot thuds rushing towards us. Did someone call in reinforcements? The foot thuds get louder and closer. I see a flash of gray as the wolf of my Grandfather comes to my aid. The other wolves are confused by the turn of events, stepping back slightly. My grandfather didn't waste any time, mouth open, he then clamped his jaws around the neck of the first wolf, the one who was going to attack me first.
I then get uncoiled to help him, however seeing the first wolf had dropped his guard and allowed an opening to form, my grandfather looks at me out from the corner of his eye.
"Sophie, go now, it's your only chance" he barks.
"I'm not leaving you to face them on your own."
"Sophie, just go, I'll be right behind you" he half demands, half pleads.
I don't want to, I want to stay and help him, but then a thought crosses my mind. If you want to make it out of this alive and get to be with Luka, you better listen to what he's telling you. I look back at my grandfather, who's still holding the large wolf at bay, tell myself he's going to be fine, and then go for it.
I take off running out the opening, feeling my paws contact the ground, but it's what I'm not hearing behind me that has me the most worried, I don't hear my grandfather. The more I run, the more I realize he wasn't following me. I turn around, trying to find him. Was he just having trouble catching up with me? No, he wasn't having trouble catching up.
I'm quick to find him, my eyes land on him, standing where I was only moments ago. Our eyes connect and I get it, this wasn't a rescue, this was a sacrifice. Deep down, my grandfather knew that I wouldn't be able to make it out of there with my life, even though I would've tried my best or died trying. So, grandfather decided to distract the other wolves, so that I could try to escape.
As I continue to look into his eyes, my grandfather looks towards me and gives me a sorrow filled look with one last small wolfish smile. All too soon the moment is cut short by the three other wolves pouncing on top of him, the old wolf form of my grandfather disappearing under the onslaught of Ruby Stone wolves.
My grandfather connects the mind link as it happens. I pick it up, not knowing what I'm going to hear on the other end.
"Take care, Sophie, and watch after Luka for me. Tell your Aunt Sherry I love her."
The line then goes dead with the snap of my grandfather's neck, and the connection leaves us forever.
My Grandfather's now dead.
My Grandfather Had Helped Luka back when he was an Omega, and now he sacrificed himself for me, so I wouldn't die and leave Luka alone. My Grandfather was a teacher for the pack, a great friend to all, and A fighter till the end. He will be missed. But knowing what was ahead of him if he hid survive this battle, I wouldn't have wanted his life to end any other way.
Take care grandfather and say hi to mom and my brothers for me when you get to the other side.
As I let it sink in about what happened and what I just saw go down, I soon realize that Luka saw it too, for he was just standing a few yards away. When Luka felt grandpa's connection fade from the rest of the pack, he turns towards him and whimpers
Luka then lets out a painful sounding howl, one of those howls you hear, and you think the wolf itself is dying.
For a moment, I feel sadness coming from Luka, but then he eyes the group of wolves that ended my grandfather's life. Luka's sadness quickly turns to anger and thoughts of revenge, he then lets out a loud snarl as he tears after the wolves, flying by me in the process.
In that moment, I feel something in his wolf change as his rage begins to take over. through the connection, I feel his remaining omega side slip away from his wolf, vanishing, almost like it was never even there to begin with. It's then I realize that after all this time, my mate was no longer and omega.
He was finally an Alpha, both inside, and out.
