Chapter 3 Safe at Home
Previously, on Love bite
"Understood Sophie" My aunt says in an understanding tone.
My ear than twitches again as the faint sound of trees and brushes rustling outside in the distance becomes even stronger and stronger by the second. "There isn't much time, you two need to hurry up and get going. Go! Go! Go!" I growl and my aunt and Shelby turn around and head back up the stairs.
As the sound of growling and snarling starts to become more and more recognizable from outside, I then walk back over towards the entrance that leads down into the bunker. Luka. Just get you and my uncle home in one piece, that's all I'm asking you for. I think to myself as I stand by the tunnel entrance, and wait for the situation at hand to unfold.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now Luka
We are now about halfway to the house. The trees and bushes snap, and crackle as we run by, I don't know whether our lead on the two unknown wolves remains the same or not. Liam does. He's focused on that, but I'm focused on another thing entirely. Sophie's, rich, fresh vanilla scent is so strong now that it's intoxicating, and making my head spin with happiness. I may not be able to see the house, but I can for sure smell it, even from here.
"Luka, connect your mind link to mine' Liam commands with a slight snarl, snapping me out of my thoughts. I turn towards him, nod, and do as I'm told.
Once I'm linked in Liam's voice speaks up. "Okay Sherry, go ahead, he's linked in."
"We've finished talking to Sophie, and explained our little situation to her" Sherry says.
"And what does she want as to do?" Liam asks her.
"Okay. Shelby and I will go around to the backyard, turn off the invisible fence, and open the doors to the escape hatch that leads to the bunker. So that way all Luka has to do is jump down into the tunnel, and into safety. Sophie said that should stop the unknown wolves in their tracks, and if it doesn't, she has said that and I quote 'it will not be pretty.'"
"Wait. Sophie's shifting in the bunker tonight, why?" Liam asks her.
This leaves me puzzled. Why would Sophie lock herself in the bunker on a full moon like to nights? She loved shifting outside and running around, did something happen to her to have her change that while I was away? I'll have to find out.
"I'll tell you tomorrow morning, now just come straight home" Aunt Sherry tells us, right before she cuts the link.
A few minutes later Liam and I come bolting out from the tree line and head towards the backyard just as fast as our paws can carry us. As we approach, I can see Aunt Sherry and Shelby standing by the escape hatch waiting for us, my breathing slows and my pace lessens feeling relieved that this life or death chase from Bloodstone Canyon is finally over. As I trot over I waste little time and head over to my destination, I don't even speak a word to Aunt Sherry or Shelby as I go by them, but I can see they have smiles on both their faces. I walk over to the bunker and stop. I turn and look towards aunt Sherry, she doesn't tell me anything but she mouths the words 'Go ahead, she's down there,' I nod and jump inside.
Once I'm inside the pitch black tunnel. I start to trot my way down, my legs just being happy for finally getting to rest after seven full days of non-stop motion. As I go down deeper into the tunnel, memories start to flood my mind. They're good memories, the only good memories I have of the bunker itself.
A woman, who I now know was Sophie's mother, giving me the key to the silver cuffs that held me, as a gift to me on my thirteenth birthday.
The same woman who treated, and cared for me as best she could, as if I was her own son.
My guardian angel who then carried me out of the bunker, that had been my prison for three years, through the very same tunnel I'm going back down, and on the way to my freedom.
From the other way coming towards me I can see a silhouette of someone coming towards me in the dim light glowing from the bunker itself, my heart leaps. Her sweet scent is as strong as it will ever be, and I can't see it but I can feel it, the heat radiating from her, like true power itself. As we almost go past each other, for a split second something warm and fuzzy rubs up against my tail. A warm heat first floods my chest, and then the rest of my body sending me slightly running towards the end of the tunnel. That was one jolt of electricity, one reignited spark of our love connection.
Everything is going to be alright now, Sophie's got this covered. I think to myself as I make it to the end of the tunnel and jump down.
Now Sophie
I can hear all the action going on from outside with my ears perked up on alert, the first thing I heard was the clang of the escape hatch doors as they were being reopened. Less than a few moments later I can hear the sound of what I thank are at least two wolves as they race towards the backyard, judging from the lack of screaming and shouting, I'd be willing to bet that it's probably Luka and my uncle. Then if it's not my aunt and best friend are already dead, then after a slight pause I hear someone jump down into the tunnel. I take in a sniff, it's Luka. He made it. I think to myself.
Then right after that, within a few seconds I can hear the sounds of two more wolves snarling as they slowly come towards the backyard, and then another wolf, my uncle starts to let out a warning growl, trying to protect Shelby and his mate. Now that Luka's safe for the time being, I have to step up to the plate and try to the save the rest of my family before they get ripped to shreds.
I take a few steps back. Okay Sophie, time to do your job, I tell myself as I go over and climb into the tunnels bunker entrance. Enforcing the most important law of my pack never hurt my family. I add as I start to head up the tunnel.
About half way up the tunnel I start to make out the shape of a wolf's face in the darkness, from the dim light of the bunker itself I can't see much, just the outline of its face, but through the darkness there's one thing I can see clearly even with the bad lighting, a pair of eyes. Rich honey golden in color, they just make my heart want to leap. He probably knows who I am to, he just can't see my eyes because they're so dark.
There's no doubt about it. This is Luka, it has to be, who else has honey colored eyes like that? I ask myself as I slowly approach. What I wouldn't give to walk over and say hi to him, just for a moment. I think to myself, then I shake my head. No. As much as I don't want it to, reuniting with Luka's going to have to wait, I've got to save the rest of my family from their fate. I think to myself as I walk past him, then Luka's strong honey scent fills my nose, causing me to reconsider my decision.
Then as I'm starting to think about turning around and going back to the bunker to be with my mate, a warm heat in my chest snaps me out of my thoughts. A spark of electricity courses throughout my body, as something warm and soft rubs against just the very tip of my tail. Was that Luka's tail? I ask myself as I run right passed him.
In that split second my body comes alive like it hasn't been in a few months. The heat in my chest rises, but this time it's not from Luka but from anger. I get into a run and I let out a slight snarl, causing the fur on the back of my neck to stand up on end. From the other end of the tunnel, I hear someone jump down into the bunker. He's safe, Luka is truly safe now. I think to myself as I approach the opening to the escape hatch.
"Get back!" I growl, as I leap out from the darkness with all of my teeth exposed and my ears slightly cocked back, making my face look bigger than it actually is. I step slowly forward, about a foot away from the hatch.
My surprise appearance has seem to have stopped everyone in their tracks because now everybody seems to be frozen in place, as if time has stopped. Even the two unknown wolves, who look like they were about to tackle my uncle are now too locked in their places.
My Uncle who standing in front of my aunt and Shelby in a protective stance trying to defend them relaxes his body slightly, and turns towards me. "Better late than never, right Sophie?" He grumbles.
"I know, sorry, I got sidetracked for a second" I slightly snarl as I turn my head towards him. I then turn my head back towards the unknown wolves, just by their coat colors and patterns, I know instantly who these intruders really are. They then come over to me on trembling legs and paws. "Misty! Go home and when you get there, tell Ace that he and his pack are not getting their paws on my Luka tonight, or any other night, you hear me" I growl deeply.
The smaller gray and white female, Misty nods with a worried sounding whimper, she then turns around with her tail tucked tightly in between her legs and then starts to slowly slink off towards the other direction. The larger dark gray wolf, Misty's mate with the light gray patches scattered all along his coat starts to follow behind her, I feel my wolf start to stir inside me again, like she doesn't want him to leave.
"Colt..." I snap my jaw, but I trail off, unable to finish.
Colt quickly turns back towards me, I clear my throat before speaking to him. "I need you to stay here for a while, don't worry, we'll let you enjoy tonight in your wolf form with my Uncle following you, then in the morning I'll have him take you to the cells" I snarl.
"But why?" He whimpers with ears flattened.
"Since you're Ace's new head Beta that means you took the second in command spot from Chris after he left to join us. I want to know what's going on. An Alpha wouldn't send a high ranking member of a pack, much less a Beta and his mate to chase a target from that far away, unless something bigger is at work" I slightly snarl.
"Understood, Alpha Sophie" Colt whimpers as he bows in respect, he then turns around and starts to walk the other way, but he stops and looks over his shoulder to make sure my uncle is following him. My Uncle steps away from my aunt and Shelby, like he's still afraid that Colt will still turn around and attack at any moment.
"Okay Sophie, question, what cells were you referring to?" He slightly snarls as he walks over towards me.
"The cells in the dungeons" I reply in a snarl as I look towards him.
"Wait what, when did we get dungeons?" My Uncle asks me with a confused yelp.
"Well umm...That's kind of a long story, I'll tell it to you and Luka tomorrow during breakfast" I tell him.
"Gotcha" He replies in a slight grumble himself.
"Come on elder, let's go" Colt snarls as he's looking back at the both of us.
"Hay kid. I may be an Elder, but that doesn't mean I can't still kick your butt if I want to!" My Uncle growls as he turns his head to look at Colt.
"Sorry Sir" He whimpers and flattens his ears once again.
My Uncle then turns his head back towards me. "Sophie, I have to go before mister eager mcbeaver over there loses it and goes completely bonkers" He grumbles from deep within his chest as he rubs his shoulder against mine.
"I understand perfectly. "Have a good night Uncle, and thanks for getting my Luka back home safely" I slightly whimper as I lean in to him.
"Don't thank me, Luka got us both back, I only kept him going" He grumbles a chuckle, he then clears is throat before he speaks to me again. "Anyways, you have a good night as well Little Sophie' He adds
My Uncle then slowly turns around so that he's now facing my aunt and Shelby. "I'll see you again tomorrow my love, sweet dreams" I hear him softly whimper as he gently licks her lips.
"I will and I'll be here, waiting, have fun out there" Her words hitching.
He then turns back around. "Have a good night Shelby, I would love to stay and chat but I've got to run" he says, right before he and Colt take off.
"I understand" I hear her say as I walk slowly over towards the both of them.
"Are you two okay?" I ask them in a concerned whimper.
"We're fine Sophie, how bout you?" My aunt asks.
"Same here, that was nothing this Alpha couldn't handle" I yelp.
"I know, now go have a good night with Luka. Free from any more nightmares, and we'll see you again when we open the bunker door in the morning" My aunt says as she and Shelby both gently throw their arms around my neck in an embrace, I lean in for a moment accepting the soft, warm comfort it brings. "Uh Sophie, you better get back down there before that mate of yours eats all your meat, and drinks all of your water" My aunt than mumbles in my ear.
I quickly shake out of the embrace and speed walk back over towards the escape hatch, then I stop and turn back towards the both of them. "When I get inside, please be sure to shut these doors again just to be safe" I snarl lightly, one last time.
"Understood, will do Sophie" My aunt says with a nod, I give her a slight nod back before I jump back into the darkness of the tunnel.
Once I'm back inside and I hear the doors close, for what I hope will be the final time tonight, I take off running back down the tunnel. As I do I start to hear the faint sound that a dog or wolf would make if it was lapping up the water from a bowl. I know what that is, or rather I know who it is, I think to myself as my legs pick up speed like my body already knows the same answer as I do.
It takes almost no time at all before I'm back at the other end of the tunnel, I quietly jump down into the bunker itself and look around, and then my eyes slowly start to scan the dimly lit room until they land on a figure across the room drinking my water. Broad shoulders are the first thing my eyes land on, he now looks strong enough to pull a million pounds. His coat. Sandy, russet-brown on top and white on the bottom looks like it's as soft as velvet, it looks so tempting to touch, but the one thing that amazes me about him, is his size. Is this really the same Luka that I saved from my two head Beta's, a little over two years ago? I ask myself. Then without thinking about it a slight whine escapes my lips.
Luka raises his head, away from the water bowl and his ears perk up at the sound, he then turns all the way around and looks towards me. His face is covered in red meat, but the thing I'm focused on, are his eyes. When Luka's rich honey golden eyes make contact with mine it's like I'm in heaven, the next thing I know my tail slowly starts to wag, and my heart starts racing as fast as a hummingbirds.
He then smiles at me with all of his top canines showing. "Hey SophieJane, long time no see" He whimpers. I just stand there with a look on my face like I've seen a ghost, and I have, a ghost from my past. I think to myself. "Sophie" Luka's voice snaps me out of my deep thoughts. "Please don't tell me I just ran all this way to just find out that you're not happy to see me" Luka grumbles. Overjoyed is more like it, I think to myself.
I slowly walk over towards him with my whole body and all four of my limbs shaking, right now I feel like jello, just to know that after all I've been through over almost two years all of that ends now. After what seems like hours I finally make it to the other side of the room, I come over to Luka and gently snuggle my head against his, Luka letting out a slight purr as I do so. "Of course I'm happy, how can I not be. A lot of things have been going on around here lately, some things that I've wished that I had you by my side to help me deal with" I whimper as I start to cry.
"Don't worry my love, I'm here now, I'm back" Luka whimpers, trying to sooth me, and it works, my heart rate slows and my shaking stops.
I then look over and see Luka's face is still stained with the red meat I sit down in front of him, he does the same, and bends down slightly. "Luka your wolf has grown so much" I whimper as I start to gently lick Luka's face off.
"Well, I guess I've gotten a little bigger since the last time you saw me" He slightly whimpers back.
"A little. Luka do you realize that now my wolf only comes up to your shoulder, last year it was barely the other way around" I slightly grumble.
Luka then turns his head slightly to the side so that I have better access to his mouth. "Sophiejane my dear. If you think my wolf form is impressive, then just wait till you see my human form" Luka whimpers.
"I can't wait" I whine back, I then look over and see Luka has practically licked my dinner bowl clean, Not even a crumb left in sight. I look back towards him. "Luka, did you eat all of my dinner?" I ask him in a grumble.
"I'm so sorry Sophie, but it had been a week since I had eaten anything" Luka whimpers.
"You didn't even share" I grumble jokingly as I look back at him, it was meant as a joke but Luka takes it harder than he was meant to, he whimpers once again and flattens his ears.
I'm about to speak up, tell him it was a joke, and that all is forgiven, that's when we hear the door to the bunker being flung open again. Now what. I think to myself, as me and Luka stand up. "No need to fret Luka, we have more" My aunt says, as she and Shelby come down the stairs with their hands full.
From the spot we're at I can see my aunt's carrying two new large bowls of red meat while Shelby is carrying another bowl of water in one hand, and a large picture filled with ice water in the other. When my aunt and Shelby get down to the bottom step Luka and I get out of their way so that way we wouldn't cause any trouble for them, since their hands are so full. My aunt moves the empty meat bowl out-of-the-way and slides the two new bowls into place, while Shelby refills my water bowl and then slides Luka's into place.
When they're done they stand up and look at us, my aunt now with the empty food bowl in her hand and Shelby with a now half empty water picture in her hands. "There you go you guys that should do it" My aunt sherry tells us.
"Thank you" Luka and I both yelp in sync. "Oh and Aunt Sherry, Shelby, sorry I couldn't say hello to you guys when I first got here" Luka whimpers.
"Oh Luka. There's no need to apologize, we understand, you were in a hurry" Replies my aunt. She then lets out a slight yawn. "Okay, it's now time for Shelby and me to hit the hay for the night" She then looks towards me. "So hopefully for the final time tonight, goodnight Sophie" Aunt Sherry says, throwing her arms around my large neck.
"Goodnight" I whimper, snuggling into her hug.
My aunt then let's go and Shelby does the same, but she doesn't say anything. My aunt then looks towards Luka. "And the same goes for you as well Luka, have a good rest of your night and we'll talk to you in the morning during breakfast" My aunt says as she throws her arms around Luka's neck.
"I..." Luka whimpers but my aunt cuts him off.
"Save it for tomorrow, okay. You need to spend the rest of tonight with Sophie, she's been through a lot in the past few months" I hear her whisper, but I pretend I didn't. I then back up from Luka a bit and then turn slightly, so that I'm now looking at his side.
"I will, thanks you guys" Luka slightly grumbles.
My aunt then pulls away from Luka and I watch as Shelby repeats what she did with me, and then we watch them go up the stairs for the last time tonight. When we hear the bunker door close, I speed walk over and gently tackle Luka to the ground. "I don't think I've told you yet, but I have recently found out I like playing before I eat my food" I grumble as I gently get on top of him.
I'm not going to mate with him I just want to wrestle and spend a little time with him, it's been ages since I've wrestled and roughhoused like this, at least since I was a pup myself. Luka then gently rolls over and gets me over onto my back, he then runs to the other side of the bunker. "Sophie, I'll bet you can't catch me" Luka slightly snarls at me.
I get up onto my feet and Luka takes off, running alongside the walls, I chase after him and quickly tackle him. However it doesn't take him long to overpower me and roll me back onto my back again. "So tell me SophieJane, how did you get the bleach smell out? I can barely smell it" Luka asks as he bends down and gently mouths my shoulder, it doesn't hurt he just lightly presses his teeth against my skin.
"Lots and lots of air freshener I grumble back at him as I push him off of me and start running again.
After a few more laps around the bunker we start to pant heavily, right now I'm still out in front with my mate hot on my heals. Then as we are coming to a spot that we have gone through a few times already, Luka suddenly stops, I put on my breaks and look back towards him. Luka's just frozen there, his posture low, and his legs shaking badly. "What, what is it?" I whimper as I slowly turn around and walk back over towards him. Luka doesn't say anything so I just follow his gaze to where he's looking. He's staring at a pair of ceiling hooks that hang up above, I haven't noticed them before, but I can tell just by looking at him Luka knows them all too well.
After a few moments Luka speaks up. "This is where your father had me hanging. I can't see it, but I can still smell it, I can feel it. The smell of blood, a slight tingling in my bones" He Whimpers slash grumbles as he flattens his ears slightly.
"Hey, it's in the past. Why don't we go over and eat our meat, before we bed down for the night" I grumble slightly, as I rub my shoulder up against his.
"Alright Sophie" Luka whimpers as he gets out of the crouch he was in and starts to follow me over to the bowl.
For the next hour Luka and I stuff our faces with the food my aunt and Shelby left out for us, since the pack and I went hunting yesterday evening, tonight's meal included everything, bones and all. As I'm finishing my dinner and heading over towards the blanket Luka starts to get a drink of water.
"You know you shouldn't do that" I snarl slightly, looking back over my shoulder towards him.
"Why?" He grumbles lifting his head and turning his head to look towards me.
"We don't have a bathroom in here, and I don't want you wetting the blanket in the middle of the night" I slightly grumble.
"Alright fine" Luka yelps as he slowly turns around away from the water bowl, and walks onto his blanket. "I didn't know you kept this, thank you" He then huffs as he then lays down.
"You're welcome, and I had to keep it, it was the only thing that kept my wolf sane" I whimper slightly.
Luka cocks his head over to the side slightly. "What do you mean by kept your wolf sane?" He asks me.
"It's a long story" I whimper at him.
"Oh, right" He huffs laying his chin down on the blanket.
As I'm about to lay down and join him my wolf self starts to stir inside of me again, as if she's telling me there's still something I have to do, but what? I ask myself. It only takes me a moment to solve it. Tell the pack the good news, the voice inside my head says. "Sophie, aren't you coming to bed?" Luka asks, looking up towards me and snapping me out of my thoughts.
"In a moment Luka, but first there's something I have to do" I yelp.
I then turn towards the opening of the tunnel and turn on the pack mind link. "The Alpha's back" I howl like I haven't howled in a long time.
When my howl fades I pant heavily, trying to catch my breath then a few seconds later I hear something from outside. First there's one, then four, then eight and then a whole chorus of howls from the forest beyond these walls joins in, all of them sounding overjoyed. Then at the very end of the chorus of howls my ears pick out a single one, this one is a bit more high-pitched then the others and the howls themselves are shorter as well. Like a pup's, and then there it is. I can feel it deep down in the pit of my chest, a new connection in the pack, then as soon as it started, the chorus of howls ends.
I then walk over and plop myself down beside Luka. "Goodnight."
"Goodnight" He says as we rub our noses against each other's, I then close my eyes.
This night has been the best night of my life so far, minus the fact that Luka and my uncle were running for their lives, and it was touch and go for a while whether we would see them alive again or not. On the plus side. I have Luka and my uncle back home safe and sound the two unknown wolves are taken care of, and to top it all off, we have a new pack member. I wonder who it could be. I ask myself before darkness takes its hold, and I fall asleep.
