Chapter Fourteen

-Dick's POV-

Collapsing on the leather couch, I clicked on the television and dug my hand into the box of sugary cereal. There was a paused recording of some Justice League show. "Tim," I mumbled to myself, shaking my head. I hated shows like that because the way they portrayed the heros on the League was completely wrong. They made Superman into this loving character who excepted everyone, but where was he when his own son wanted a father? Flash was always this womanizer, when I had never actually seen him chat up a babe. That was more like Wally. Wonder Woman was always the girl who wanted to flaunt herself and have a life crisis about finding love, when she was the opposite. I wasn't really close to Wonder Woman, but since she had dated Bruce, I had a chance to get to know what she was like. She is a strong woman who knows her owns strengths and doesn't need anyone to take care of her. The only one that Tim's stupid little show actually got right was Batman. He was a character who never had time for fun. Spot on if you ask me.

I took another scoop of cereal and sighed to myself. Why was I being so grouchy? Was I letting this Nightingale get to me? I wasn't acting like myself. I wasn't making as many jokes as I usually did, instead I was growling at everything everyone else did. I scrubbed my face with my hands and changed the television to a sports channel. Metropolis Meteros going against the Gotham Wildcats. I laughed and sat up, watching as the teams flipped a coin for the first play. Football teams weren't the only people who flipped a coin in Gotham...

"...and so Batman and Superman were kicking Ivo's robots and fighting them off, while I hacked the main server and Ivo went back to Belle Reve," Tim's voice came from around the hall as he and Victoria walked in. She was about three inches taller than him and was watching him intently.

"Who is this Ivo? He seems like he just pretends to be smart even though he keeps getting sent back to that same cell," Victoria asked, glancing at me but looking away. I guess she decided to ignore me, I had done the same.

"He's smart, but I'm smarter," Tim smirked and took a seat at the bar at the back of the living room, "oh hey Dick! Did you hear about Vicky's training today? She beat all of yours, Jason's, and Barbara's records on the holographic courses!" A smile was growing on his face as he laughed beside Victoria. I slammed my cereal box on the coffee table and clenched my teeth together.

"Good for the rookie," I growled, standing up. She crossed her arms and mouthed 'fight me.' I squeezed my hand into a fist and got ready to pounce, but rethought the action as I realized Tim was right beside her. "I'm going to sleep. Tell me who wins," I nodded my head towards the huge flatscreen and walked down the hallway. I hid behind the corner and listened in on the two.

"Hey I beat your record too!" She joked. Tim made a laugh like he had been tickled. I rolled my eyes.

"Yeah, but he didn't need to know that. I don't know what his problem is. He's acting so...weird. Like he's jealous of you or something," Tim said. I wasn't jealous! I didn't want to be like her at all. I had to start acting like myself and stop letting this satan spawn get to me. I didn't want to be that guy who always makes everyone else feel like they had done something wrong. I would just ignore Victoria.

"He has nothing to be jealous of. Except for maybe that I am far past his simplistic training. You know, maybe I could teach you some things. The way I see it, Batman trains you guys from what he learned. But every retelling of the story will stretch his story more and more to the point where he is teaching a beginner's Karate class. The way I see it, you're the most badly trained Robin so far. Dick got the first retelling of the story, which even then wasn't that good. Then Todd get his training and-"

"How do you know that name?" Tim interrupted. My ears had perked up as well. My heart strings twisted a bit when I heard his name leave her lips. Jason Todd, the lost Robin. The dead brother.

"I hacked the Batcomputer. I know that he was beaten to a pulp by that clown and blown to bits," Victoria said without any traces of sympathy. When Tim didn't answer, she spoke again. "I'm sorry, I didn't know the wound was still fresh. Anyway, what I was saying, you got the short end of the stick. You are the best hacker out of the three and maybe in exchange for some software corrections on my computer, I'll teach you some better fighting skills."

"Well, I'll have to go to your house to help with your computer. We can train here tomorrow, same time. Maybe this time we can try the robots," Tim said, some happiness filling his voice again. "We'll talk tomorrow about that. Wanna watch one of my favorite shows? It's called the Justice League of America." Tim led Victoria to the couch and turned on his show. He asked Alfred for some dinner and clicked on the episode he showed me once.

"Why do you watch these shows? From what the computer said, you've already met everyone on the Justice League," Victoria asked, making Tim laugh.

"I like to watch these kid's shows sometimes. It makes me feel like a kid again, and I haven't felt like a kid in a while. Being Robin means you have to be serious and grow up a little faster. I thought Dick was the only one of us that understood that being serious wasn't always good. But now, he's kind of turning serious again. Anyway, let's watch!" Tim shouted, leaning back. I sighed and headed up to my bedroom. I began peeling off my suit, but stopped, and jumped out my open window. I was going to serve some justice to clear my head.

The streets were surprisingly quiet. I looked up at the sky and spotted the huge white Bat symbol that illuminated the rooftops. So that's why. The Batman was out. I didn't need to be in Gotham then, I needed to be in my city.

It took about twenty minutes to get to Blüdhaven via jet. I had Alfred pilot it from the cave. I dropped out of it and landed on top of a tall building. I always scoped out the city from there. About two minutes after watching the city, I picked up a mugging a few blocks away from me. I swung down and landed in front of the two guys along with a girl who all stood in front of a scared couple with their young daughter. "Mugging on the first date? Taking it a little fast, I see," I remarked, crossing my arms and looked at the three muggers. The guy shoved his girlfriend behind him as he charged towards me. I jumped up and landed in front of the female mugger. She pulled out a flip knife and jabbed forward. A streak of yellow flew past me and the girl fell back.

Batgirl looked up at me after taking down the female mugger. I smiled a dopey smile and looked at her. She kicked over my shoulder and knocked out the approaching male muggers. I turned around, shrugged it off, and turned back towards Barbara. "Hey Dick," she breathed out after the three victims ran off.

"You're back?" I exclaimed and stepped closer to her. Barbara pushed her red hair over her shoulder and chuckled.

"No, 'Babs it's good to see you!' huh?"

"Sorry, you're right. Babs, it's good to see you! You're back?"

"Yep," Barbara answered, climbing the fire escape on the side of the building and swung across to another building.

"So, how was the mission with the Flash?" The fire escape was a bit more loose than it usually was. I guess Batgirl was trying to pull a prank. I mentally filed away a thought to play a prank on her later.

"You mean the Flashes? Barry and Bart were there," my chest tightened again at the name missing in the list of Flashes. Wally was gone. "The mission wrapped up nicely, actually. We caught the Scarecrow and sent him to Arkham before his new pill could affect anyone else. There were only two civilian casualities," Barbara said, smiling to herself. The two would be missed, but it could've been worse. Only two casualities was a success.

"Jim said that you went to Central City for a funeral," I smirked, crossing my arms. Her smile vanished and she looked down at her feet.

"I told my dad the truth, I was at a funeral. The two that died were a guy who drove while high on the Scarecrow's drug. He killed himself and another passanger. But, the Scarecrow pumped the Central City Police Department force with a mix of Scare Toxin and Joker Gas," she sighed, "the officers' brains couldn't handle the mix. Most of them had a life-ending stroke or brain hemorrhage and died with smiles on their faces from the Joker Gas. I went to the funeral of the twelve brave officers who died." She looked up at me with a saddened expression. Her face screamed sadness but her eyes glinted with anger. After what the Joker did to her and he was now out there again.

"Barbara, protecting people from the villians is a dangerous job. Those cops signed their lives away to protect the people they care about and their city. They were brave, but they knew what they were getting into. Things happen, terrible things during our job. It's impossible for something bad not to happen," I placed my hand on her shoulder. She looked up at me with teary eyes.

"I know, but it's so sad to think about. What if my dad was one of those brave officers that died? I would be crushed," she whimpered. I looked at her and pulled her in for a hug. We were trying to be friends again since our break up.

"We all would. But that's a risk your dad is willing to take to keep Gotham a better place," I whispered into her hair and rubbed her back. She wiped her eyes and let go of me. I dropped my arms and let her wipe her tears away.

"You're right. Let's talk about something more upbeat. Like the fact that the Team really wants you back on the team," Barbara smiled, elbowing me. I rolled my eyes. I hadn't been back to the Team since Wally died. I didn't want to go back, really. I mean I loved working with the young heros, but I wanted to work alone so one of my closest friends wouldn't die again. Wally was my best friend, and he was gone. "I know it's been hard since Wally," Babs seemed to read my mind, "but even Artemis went back to crime fighting. It might help to be with all your other friends."

"I know, but I don't want any other people getting hurt."

"We all can take care of ourselves. The Light is gone, Dick. It's like what you said, everyone knows they are putting themselves in danger with this job," she smirked at me and tossed one of the Team ear coms at me. I looked up at her and raised an eyebrow. "Give Aqualad a call."

"Don't you need this?" I asked, flipping the tiny piece over in my hand.

"No, I have another mission I have to stop. Killer Frost escaped Belle Reve and someone has to track her down," Barbara chuckled, rolling her eyes.

"Have fun on Girl's Night." We shared a laugh and then awkwardly rubbed our necks.

"See you when I get back," Barbara looked up at me and winked, swinging away. I watched her until her body escaped my view. I held the tiny circle-shaped com between my index finer and thumb. I was gonna tuck it into my belt, but stuck it in my ear instead.

The same high pitched clearing-lines nose echoed in the com. "Aqualad to Batgirl. What is it?" It hadn't been that long since I saw Aqualad, but him talking to me through the com brought back a million memories.

"Hey Kaldur. Barbara gave me her chip," I said, laughing. Kaldur also chuckled.

"Well then, what is it Nightwing?" Kaldur's voice sounded worried, bringing back even more memories. He was always the protective leader.

"Uh..I was wondering, um, if you need anyone on a mission..." I rubbed my neck, stumbling on my words.

"Yes, Dick. You are always welcome back to the Team. We really need another original member on the Team again and you are the only one who left that we can actually get back," Kaldur choked a bit on the last sentence. Apparently, I wasn't the only one still sad about his death.

"I agree, it's about time I get back with you guys. I'll be there tomorrow morning." I hung up and went back to the plane to Gotham.

I awoke in my bed at the manor without Victoria standing in my room. I put on my uniform and zeta tubed to the Watch Tower, The Team's new headquarters. Something I hadn't done in almost seven months.

~~~~Sorry school is keeping me busy! So, it's been about eight months since the ending of the Young Justice show~~~~
