Chapter Thirteen and a half
“Are you sure you don't need help?” Davina asked Leo, her eyes flitting over the stack of objects in his arms.
He nodded. The movement caused one of the pillows at the top of the stack to fall to the ground. Davina picked it up and wrapped her hands around it, her smile widening at the playfully narrowed eyes Leo sent her way.
“Hand it over,” he said.
“I like hugging it.” She looked around her, bouncing on her feet as she walked. “Where are we going?”
He grinned at her barely concealed restlessness. “Just over that bridge.” Davina forced herself to keep a steady pace as she was mere seconds away from her ‘prize’. When they finally arrived, she stared at the private, empty field in satisfaction. “Here we are,” Leo said as he set his stuff down on the ground beside the shallow pond under the brown bridge. Immediately, Davina's eyes got drawn to the water and the little fish swimming inside. She ran and without warning, dipped her hand inside, turning over the shiny rocks at the bottom to play with the fishes. “Do you like it?”
She made a hum of agreement, her attention focused on the small animals that seemed to be running away from her the more she tried to go near them. Her smile dimmed by the minute. “They're leaving,” she muttered sorrowfully.
Leo left her side for a moment and returned with a small bottle. Handing it to her, he said, “This might help.”
She took it from him and read the body. “Oh, fish feed.” Without hesitation, she brought out her hand out of the water and poured a little of the bottle's content into her hand before dipping it into the water again. As the feed spread in the water, the fish began to swim in her direction and hover around her hand. She beamed. “If I had known this was here, I would have come out earlier.”
Leo sat on the laid blanket and opened a pack of Cheetos. “You like fishes just like you do penguins?”
Her earlier conversation with Damian and Tamara flashed in her mind. Since she had figured out her feelings, what was she to do? Should she tell him? Would be like her back? Her hand rolling in the water slowed as she thought. “Yeah, just like penguins.”
“Are you okay?” Leo asked, noticing the change of mood.
She nodded. “I am. I was thinking about penguins.”
“When we get back, I'll take you to a zoo.”
“You met Kendall at a zoo,” Davina muttered spitefully.
Leo heard her and winced. “That was completely unintentional. But I promise, no more meeting girls at the zoo…or anywhere else.” When she didn't respond, he leaned closer to her with a cheeky smile, his breath tickling her ear in a good way. “Am I forgiven?”
“No. You made me cry. Also, Jaiyana said you have to work for my forgiveness.”
“We spent fifteen days away from each other so how about I take you to fifteen different places you've never been to,” Leo said.
Davina pulled her hand out of the water and sat beside him, intrigued by his suggestion. “That would take a lot of time.”
He put a piece of his snack into her mouth, watching as she chewed slowly. His gaze them shifted to the beautiful sunset. Davina watched his side profile, thinking of how aesthetic he looked with his messy features. His eyes returned to her and upon seeing her staring, he grinned. “We have all the time in the world.”
