Chapter Sixteen
Leo ran towards Davina with a wide grin, having changed out of his football jersey in less than twenty minutes after the game was over. She had a similar smile on her face.
Although she hadn't been able to hear throughout the match and hardly knew anything about football, she took great joy in seeing the numbers change in Leo's team's favor.
She sat in her position at the end of the bleacher row, waiting for the chairs to empty out. Unfortunately, the other spectators were moving out rather slowly, most of them lingering around Leo and Val.
But that wasn't her concern. Leo was coming to her.
His mouth moved, calling her name. She stood and climbed down the column over the chairs in front of her. When she got to Leo, he grabbed her waist and pulled her over the short railing.
When she dropped her headphones, a wide variety of voices and smells floated into her ears. She sagged against Leo trying to catch her breath. Leo pulled her headphones back on but adjusted the setting. "Davina," he called out again, his hands resting gently against her face. "Are you okay?"
She smiled. "I am alright," she muttered tiredly. "You guys won."
He frowned with worry. "You look exhausted. You don't have to come for any more matches."
"Yes. I am exhausted but I will come for more matches." She tapped her headphones. "I couldn't hear a thing though. I'm sure the commentary was great."
Leo blinked at her, remaining silent for a few seconds before bursting into laughter. "It was. I scored half of the goals."
She beamed. "I saw. How do you run so fast? You kept running and running without getting tired. I was imagining a white and gold penguin running as fast as you. That wouldn't be possible regardless; they have very short legs...why are you looking at me like that?"
His sparkling eyes flitted from her lips to her eyes. "Davina, will you be my girlfriend?" he asked.
She froze, her heart beating a million miles per hour. "What?"
"I really like you and I want to make us official."
Davina stared at him in concern, wondering if one of the opposing team members had tackled him too hard during the game. Why on earth would Leonardo Smith—the guy who could have any girl he wanted in the school—ask her out?
"I think about penguins half the time," she stated.
"You're passionate."
She tried again. "I have a low attention span."
"I'll have to work hard to keep your attention. We'll never have a boring relationship."
"I process stuff differently."
He shrugged. "A little uniqueness never killed anyone."
"Talk about seeing the bright side in everything," Jaiyana muttered behind Davina. Davina glanced at her best friend and saw an encouraging smile that had Davina's decision solidifying.
"You can't take it back," Davina said.
Leo hugged and spun her. "Wouldn't dream of it." When he stopped, her brought her closer and brushed his lips teasingly against hers.
She flinched and he pulled away. "It's itchy. Don't do that," she said. His expression fell and he nodded with a small smile. Davina shook her head. "No, I mean, don't kiss me like that."
His eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "What do you–"
Davina reaching up and kissing him deeply interrupted whatever he wanted to say. After a few seconds, she pulled away. "Like that. I prefer it like that."
Her voice snapped Leo out of his daze. He tugged her to himself and kissed her with so much passion that she began to bend over backwards. Davina tugged him by his T-shirt closer to her, ignoring the mesh of their bodies, concentrating on the fact that their hearts, although beating rapidly, were beating as one.
As his tongue clashed with hers, his hand trailed down her body to wrap one leg around his waist. A voice clearing snapped them both out of their daze. They pulled back for air.
Davina breathed slowly, staring in awe at Leo. How had he been able to make her feel so much pleasure? Was it because of a kiss or the fact that he was the one that kissed her? Did it make sense that–
"Sorry to interrupt but security needs us out of here soon," one of Leo's team members said while bouncing excitedly on his feet. Davina buried her head in Leo's neck, only just noticing that his whole team was standing around them.
Leo clicked his tongue and let go of Davina's leg. The annoyed sound snapped her attention back to Leo's irritated face. She held his face between her hands. "What's the problem?"
His gaze softened as he looked at her. "They interrupted our kiss."
She shrugged. "I can kiss you again. When we go outside, I will."
Leo looked at some of his teammates who had been snickering with a smirk.
"I suddenly wish I have a girlfriend," one of them muttered.
"Have you tried asking a girl you like out?" Davina asked.
The guy frowned and nodded slowly. "Yes. Why?"
Davina made a humming sound. "Maybe you are the problem." The whole team burst into laughter. Davina looked at Leo confused. "Did I say something wrong?"
"Honey, you were perfect," a taller girl standing there said, coming to stand beside her. Davina had noticed her, playing with the boys earlier. "Ryan needs to get it through his skull that he's nothing special."
"I liked your playing, especially the time that you tackled the guy who elbowed Leo in the face," Davina said with a semi grateful, semi proud smile.
She grinned. "Thank you. You have a good eye. I'm Rose. So glad you're not another airhead that we have to deal with because Leo's got pretty horrible taste in women. Take Kendall for example."
"I would rather not call a person horrible but I see your point, Rose" Davina replied, ignoring Leo's cry of protest. "That reminds me." Davina looked at Leo seriously. "You have to cut all ties with your harem of women. I'm not benevolent enough to share you."
The team burst into laughter again, half of them keeling over and rolling on the floor. Leo flushed. "Davina, what use do I have for a harem when I have you?"
Davina smiled shyly. "Okay. Just wanted to be sure."
"Harem alert," Rose suddenly said, looking behind Leo. Davina glanced at a group of girls standing there and her eyes narrowed. At that moment, she hoped Jaiyana was with her and not with Val, wherever they went to.
Leo tried to look behind him. "Do not turn around," Davina hissed between her teeth, feeling a fierce protectiveness come over her. Leo stilled. Her hands wrapped tighter around him as she glared at the girls standing there. They began to fidget under her gaze.
Rose clicked her tongue. "I'll handle this, shorty." Rose strutted to the girls like she owned the playing field and when she reached them, she struck a conversation. As Rose towered over most of them, it looked more like she was threatening them. After a minute or two of one-sided conversation, they scurried away, not glancing back at Leo for a moment.
"They're underclassmen, aren't they? They just don't know when to give up," Damian said, moving to stand beside Leo, his whole body facing them in an intimidating stance.
"Why're you so touchy? Leo isn't your boyfriend, is he?" a teammate said between laughs.
Damian rolled his eyes at his teammate's antics. "You don't know how much it took to get these two together and I'm not letting some little –"
"Damian!" someone yelled behind them. Everyone turned around. Tamara stood there panting in a restaurant worker T-shirt and jeans, looking like she had run all the way there. "I was afraid you'd left. How was it? Did you guys win?"
Damian looked flustered for a moment, his mouth flailing open and closed. "Ah...y-yes, we won. Y-You're here."
Tamara stopped right in front of Damian and smiled brightly, looking up at him with an expression Davina recognized all too well. That was the expression Leo gazed at Davina with in the last week. "I promised you I'd come. Better late than never, right?"
Damian's hands twitched up in the air and returned to his side almost immediately. Rose clamped her hand down on Damian's shoulder tightly. "So, who's this?"
Tamara stuck her hand in Rose's direction. "I'm Tamara. Damian's girlfriend."
