Chapter Fifteen
Leo had played a high-stakes game of chance about declaring his feelings when he kissed Davina. Although he had explained that he wanted to kiss only her, he never outrightly stated that he liked her and didn't expect Davina to understand.
After some brief counseling from his sister, he had thrown caution to the wind and given her his jersey to wear, something that everyone at school was an outright love declaration.
Leo had never given anyone his jersey because he had never dated and had never had any intention of doing so. This meant that as soon as Davina stepped into the bleachers, everyone was going to know he liked her. If she didn't figure it out by then, he planned on confessing to her immediately after the match.
What could go wrong?
Right. There was a possibility she wouldn't come.
Hence, Leo paced in his football gear in the locker room, thinking of what he would do if she didn't come. The rest of his teammates milled aimlessly, a few talking about game plays and rival team weaknesses, most were either on their phones or talking about girls. All remained unaware of his inner turmoil.
"Stop that. You're making me nervous," Val hissed, staring intently at his phone with a deep frown.
Leo stopped and sighed. "I can't help it. What if–"
"Yo, Val, I heard you gave out your jersey tonight. Who's the lucky girl?" Resse said.
"Yeah, you too, Smith. I saw you give the Aspie," Jonah said.
Leo's eye twitched. "Call her that again and I'll crack open your skull."
"Will she be here though?" Rose, the all 5 '9 terror of a female on the team, asked."I heard she doesn't come out for things like this because of the crowd."
Leo chuckled at Tessa's sympathetic gaze. Even if none of the male airheads in the room could tell, Leo figured that Tessa probably knew about his feelings—something his mother usually called female intuition. "I don't think so but I do hope she comes."
"She did come," Damian said, looking straight at the doorway.
As if summoned, Jaiyana and Davina stepped out slowly from behind the half-open door with small smiles on their faces. "Hi." His eyes immediately fixed on the white and gold jersey she wore.
"You wore it," he said, staring at the jersey in disbelief.
"You gave me to wear, did you not?"
"Yeah, but I didn't think you'd wear it." He approached her, his eyes slowly appraising her. "And you're wearing a skirt. Unusual but not unpleasant at all."
Davina twirled, her excitement contagious. "I find that I enjoy the freedom of movement, unlike trousers."
"So you'll wear more skirts going forward?"
Davina's eyes narrowed. "Yes. I want to," she said slowly.
Leo's eyes darted to her legs. He hadn't ever seen her legs above her knee. As he tried imagining what they would look like, she slapped his arm to jolt his attention back to her face. "You pervert."
He blinked as he snapped back to reality, his ears turning red. "I-I am not a pervert."
"You definitely are," Isaac said behind Leo. Davina let out a squeak and stood closer to Leo to make sure his body covered hers.
Leo pulled Davina into a loose embrace and glared at his teammates. "Look away."
"She's pretty and she's standing there. I can barely control my eyes," Ryan said.
"You wanna repeat that, Ryan?" Leo asked, his glare getting harsher by the second.
Ryan gulped and muttered, "No, sir."
Davina tugged at his shirt to grab his attention. When his attention returned to her, she whispered, "Leo, the match will be starting soon. I dropped by to show you my outfit. Also, I think my mom wants to meet you. Mother slipped that this was a date and my dad and brother weren't very pleased. I don't think you need to be worried about David. He's fourteen." Davina paused. "Right. Jaiyana and I need to go."
Leo blinked at Davina's rambling. When she was done talking, she began to fidget, glancing at Jaiyana who was sharing a hug with Val.
"Good luck," Jaiyana said and reached up to peck Val's cheek before scurrying out of the room, causing Leo's teammates to let out whoops and catcalls.
Leo watched Davina as she stared at the couple, curiosity swirling in her eyes. Slowly but surely, she grasped Leo's shoulder and leaned up to kiss him on the cheek. His grin threatened to split his face in two. "Good luck." Seeing his smile, hers widened. "Does that make you perform better?"
"Hell yeah," Leo whispered.
"Language," she said before turning around and waving. "I'll see you later."
"I didn't know you two were now a couple," Adam said with a teasing smile.
Leo glanced at him and then, at the rest of his team staring at him with wide eyes. "I want to ask her out after the game," he said, loud enough for everyone to hear. "When you see both of us together, get out."
"Come on."
"We can't even witness you asking someone out for the first time."
"Not cool. We're friends."
"I'm assuming we should keep Kendall away?" Rose said, picking at her nails.
Leo gave her a grateful smile. "I'd appreciate that, Rose."
Rose clicked her tongue. "It's my pleasure. I'd hate to see you dating that bitch anyway. I hope you've cut her off."
Val snorted. "Does she ever listen? You should have seen her following Leo all week."
Leo turned to Val with a confused expression. He hadn't heard about that one.
Damian patted Leo's shoulder. "You should be grateful for friends like us. We were keeping you two apart the whole time."
Leo facepalmed, his thoughts flashing to the bliss he'd had with Davina all week. To think if Damian and Val had not decided to help him. Perhaps Davina may have ignored him until graduation. "And here I was thinking she had given up."
"Do you need me to take care of her?" Rose said with an eerie grin that had half the guys including Leo shuddering.
"My mom is going to kill me if anything happens to Kendall."
Rose pouted. "We're only going to have a conversation."
"Rose, the last person you decided to 'take care of' ended up moving states," Ezra, an 11th-grade member of the team, stated.
"He was a bully and a jerk and you all knew it," Rose snapped.
Leo sighed. "Whatever you do, be gentle."
Ryan's eyes widened. "You're sicing Rose on Kendall. You really don't like her then."
Cody nodded in agreement. "I thought you two were just fighting. I mean, she's hot, your usual type."
Leo's left eye twitched. Before he could respond, Coach popped into the room. "You were supposed to be on the field minutes ago!" he yelled. The team grabbed their helmets and ran to the entrance of the field with Val in front of the line. From where Leo stood behind Val, he could hear music and screams that signified that the cheerleaders were performing. As the coach began his usual pep talk that Leo could quote word for word, his mind strayed to Davina and how out of place she would look in the crowd. Knowing her, she would probably sit at the very top of the bleachers so he would have to keep an eye out to find her.
"Focus," Damian hissed, reminding Leo of the game. "Coach is giving you a stink eye."
In the background, the MC dramatically announced their team and they jogged onto the field. The crowd went wild. The team huddled in the center of their half of the field. "No need for a boring pep talk. We all know what to do. Crush them," Val said and stuck his hand in the middle. Leo's team members piled their hands above their captain's. "One! Two! Three! Wildcats!" they yelled and dispersed to their positions on the field.
Leo stood and scanned the crowd for her. Besides the fact that Val was already staring at his girl who was waving frantically at him, the eyes of half of the school kept darting towards the two girls who wore the jerseys of the team captain and star player. Noticing the eyes, Davina lowered her baseball cap over her face with her trusty headphones in place. The bright smile on her face was all Leo needed to see. He raised his hand as if stuck in a trance. She copied his action with a bright smile.
The referee blew a whistle to grab the attention of all the players. Leo turned around and glanced at Val. "We have to win. Our girls are watching," Leo said and Val nodded with a grin.
And win, they did.
