Chapter 10: A Guilty Request

The end of Zuri's night shift was a mixed blessing. She was tired to the bone, but the thought of stepping out into the cold, unwelcoming air was less than appealing. She changed into her casual clothes, a soft sigh escaping her lips. It had been four days since Jamal's passing, and the grief was still a raw, open wound. The upcoming funeral on Saturday loomed in her mind like a storm cloud.

As she stepped outside, the rain greeted her, a gentle but persistent drizzle that she hadn't prepared for. "Great," she muttered to herself, resigning to the inevitable soaking.

Just as she began to walk, she heard the sound of an umbrella flapping open. Turning, she saw the 'Train man,' the same stranger whose path seemed to intersect with hers more often than she could attribute to mere coincidence.

"Hey!" he called out, offering a small, tentative smile.

They stood there, awkwardly at first, initiating a conversation that revolved around the mundane topic of hospitals. "I didn't know you worked at the hospital," Suho remarked, genuine surprise in his voice.

Zuri shrugged, a half-smile playing on her lips. "Well, we barely know each other," she pointed out, her voice tinged with amusement.

Suho visibly blushed, a charming vulnerability that Zuri hadn't expected from him. He laughed, a self-deprecating sound, and rubbed the back of his neck. "Well, I'm Suho Kim," he introduced himself.

"Zuri Davis," she replied, extending her hand.

"Nice to finally meet you," Suho said, shaking her hand. He took a few steps away before suddenly spinning around on his heel, an incredulous look on his face. "Will you pretend to be my girlfriend?"

The question hung in the air, unexpected and absurd. Yet, as Zuri considered it, the idea took root in her mind. Pretending to be Suho's girlfriend could offer a reprieve from her mother's constant worries about her grieving. It would also provide an escape from the dreaded blind date with Melinda's son.

She weighed the proposition, the bizarre nature of the request oddly appealing in its audacity. Suho's expression was one of hope mixed with a hint of desperation, and Zuri found herself empathizing with his situation.

After a moment of contemplation, she answered, "Okay, I'll do it." A small smile crept onto her face at the absurdity of the situation. "But we're going to need to set some ground rules."

Suho's relief was palpable, his smile broadening. "Absolutely, anything you say," he agreed eagerly.

As they walked together under the shared umbrella, Zuri couldn't help but wonder at the strange twists of fate that had brought them to this moment. Two strangers on a train, now embarking on a faux relationship, each seeking solace from their respective pressures.

The rain continued to fall around them, but under the canopy of the umbrella, a new chapter was beginning, one filled with unexpected possibilities and the curious dance of two lives intertwining in the most unusual of ways.

Currently, Suho found himself at Brett's house, where his friend was fully engrossed in a Minecraft game. Suho felt the need to confess his bizarre proposition to someone, and Brett was the closest person at hand. However, he couldn't shake the guilt he was feeling about involving Zuri in his tangled web of lies.

As Suho hesitated, Brett finally tore his eyes away from the game and glanced at his friend. "What's eating you, man?" he asked, noticing the troubled expression on Suho's face.

Suho sighed, rubbing his temples as he contemplated how to explain the situation. "I...I just did something really weird," he admitted. "I asked a woman I barely know to pretend to be my girlfriend."

Brett raised an eyebrow, momentarily distracted from his game. "You did what now?"

Suho winced at his friend's incredulous tone. "I know, it sounds insane, but I was desperate to get out of an awkward conversation," he confessed.

Just then, Briley entered the room, holding a couple of beers. He overheard their conversation and chimed in with curiosity. "How'd the date go, Suho?"

Suho took a sip of his beer and sighed, feeling the weight of his strange predicament. "It was horrible," he mumbled, regret gnawing at him.

Brett, still focused on the game, casually remarked, "He's dating a black girl."

Briley's eyes widened in surprise. "A black girl?" he said, raising an eyebrow. "Wait, do you know how hard it is to get with a black girl? That's like a level 8."

Suho rolled his eyes, both annoyed by the simplification of his situation and the fact that he had created this unnecessary mess. Guilt continued to eat at him as he wondered how Zuri would react to his bizarre proposition and whether he would be able to explain himself.

Brett's house was far from the epitome of cleanliness, and Briley didn't hesitate to voice his opinion. "Brett, your house stinks," he remarked, taking another swig of his beer. "So how'd you end up with a Black Girl?"

Suho let out a weary sigh, his mind still racing as he tried to make sense of the strange predicament he had created. "It's a long story," he began, knowing that explaining the whole situation would take some time.

Briley leaned back in his chair, seemingly unfazed by the prospect of a lengthy narrative. "I've got time," he said with a casual wave of his hand.

Suho started, "Well, for the past three months, this...goddess of a woman, that I now know as Zuri, and I have seen each other on—"

Briley cut him off, clearly impatient. "Cut to the chase, bucko."

Suho chuckled, realizing that he should get to the point. "Anyways, my mom said that if I don't get a girlfriend, then she's going to give my part of the inheritance to my brother."

Brett, who had been quietly listening, winced sympathetically. "Ouch, brutal," he commented. "All my mom is leaving me is her cats."

Suho couldn't help but feel a mixture of frustration and guilt. He had gotten himself into this situation because of family pressure and his own desire to avoid awkward conversations. Now, he had to figure out how to navigate the tangled web of lies he had spun, all while coming to terms with the fact that he had asked a stranger to pretend to be his girlfriend.
