Chapter Two
Logan didn't stay at the bar for very long, deciding to go explore his new home for the rest of the year. Perhaps he could find a nice restaurant to eat at considering the sun was going down.
While he wasn't sure where he was wandering to, he found himself okay with that. With nothing in particular to do while he was here, it wasn't a problem to him if walked around the small Hawaiian island. He'd have to get to know the place eventually; he wished there was more to explore though. Every direction appeared to lead to a beach, somewhere he didn't particularly want to go if he could help it. However, with the sunset on the horizon, and the gentle sea breeze gracing his skin, he felt it would be a waste not to enjoy it.
The intellectual young man wondered onto the sand, pushing his thoughts of the nuisance of the substance in order to enjoy the pleasant weather and view. The air was warm, but not overly so. It was extraordinarily pleasant.
Perhaps I could enjoy this vacation, he thought to himself as he blinked slowly at the setting sun on the horizon. This is a very beautiful island. I do need some time to discover myself and my aspirations. Do I truly want to be the CEO of some company? It's a remarkable position, and a well-off one, but is it truly what I want?
Logan looked out at the faded orange and purple sky and the stripe of golden that shone in between from the sun, as if he was expecting an answer to his silent questions. Of course there was none, but he couldn't help but feel as though this place was going to teach him new things about himself that he'd never stopped to consider before. Being a skeptic and a very rational human being, he didn't like not having an explanation for the feeling.
He sighed, letting his thoughts wander back to what the bartender had to say on the rumors of merfolk in the waters around the island. He knew they were fictional creatures and that there was no real proof of their existence, but then again, a small voice in the back of his mind was whispering to him that there had been no proof of many species on the planet years ago.
I wonder if they're out there, the intellectual young man thought. Perhaps they are real, and they've just been very careful about hiding their existence from us. They may be an intelligent species that has existed for hundreds of years and has remained untouched by humanity.
Logan rolled his eyes at his own thought. There was a difference between species of animals and literal creatures of fantasy. Merfolk weren't biologically possible.
He shook out his head, not wanting to think about it anymore. It was just making him upset, and he wanted to enjoy the sunset. He looked back out the shimmering waters, aglow with the setting sun's golden rays. It was practically magical.
That's when he saw it: a flicker of movement off the shore. The intellectual young man narrowed his eyes, blinking rapidly as he tried to figure out what the movement was. It seemed to be an animal's tail of some kind, but it seemed to be covered in reflective blue scales, so it couldn't belong to a dolphin or shark.
Logan took a few more steps closer to the water as he tried to get a better look, eyes widening as he realized what it looked like. It looked like a mermaid's tail. When he shook his head, it was gone.
