Chapter Twenty-One

When Patton came out of the bathroom, he was grinning from ear to ear. He twirled in his new human outfit as a giggle escaped his mouth. "I love this, Logan!" he exclaimed, hugging him tightly.

The intellectual young man smiled down at him and nodded. "I'm glad you do, now let's get you some shoes so that you can meet my friend," he said as he gently pulled his arms away. He made his way back over to the closet, retrieving a pair of black and white converse and grabbing a pair of socks. He handed them to the merman, who just stared at them in complete confusion. "You don't know how shoes work, do you?"

"I mean, I know how they work and what they do, but I don't know how to wear them," Patton admitted, blushing a little. "You can help me, right?"

Logan smiled and nodded. He guided him over to the bed, having him sit down as he knelt on one knee. He rolled each sock over the merman's feet, earning little giggles from him that told him that the motion tickled a little. "These are so the shoes don't chafe your feet," he explained as he reached for the left converse. "Now let's get your shoes on."

He guided Patton's feet into the respective shoes. The merman watched his motions in awe and intrigue as he began to tie the laces. "Wow! That's so cool!" he exclaimed once he had finished. He bounced his feet, finding that the shoes wouldn't come loose. "Humans are smart!"

"Well, some of us aren't," the man admitted, chuckling a little. "Now come on, Roman's dying to meet you."

At the mention of the bartender, he stopped and looked at him curiously. "Um, is Roman a common human name?" he asked, earning a confused look from Logan. "It's just... my best friend... he sneaks out to try and meet a human named Roman all the time. I think they're soulmates."

"What's your friend's name?" he questioned as his heart rate accelerated.

"Virgil," Patton said. "His name's Virgil."

A smile spread across Logan's lips as realization dawned on him. "Roman is the human your friend was sneaking out to meet," he explained. "Virgil, he was saved from a net by this human, right?"

The merman nodded. "Oh wow! I get to meet Virgil's soulmate!" he gasped, clapping his hands with excitement. "Come on! Let's go!"

He grabbed the intellectual young man's hand and dragged him toward the front door. Logan chuckled under his breath as he explained to him how a car worked and that it wasn't going to eat him as they climbed inside and began the drive to the hotel. Patton asked all sorts of questions about how they knew when to go and stop and how they didn't crash; he was happy to explain that humans were in fact smart enough to come up with rules and guidelines for such things to prevent accidents.

All the buildings, vehicles, and people made the merman gradually more and more excited. He was practically vibrating in his seat by the time they pulled into the parking lot of the hotel. "Come on, let's go introduce you," Logan said, offering his hand to hold.

Patton looked a little surprised, but took it almost instantly. They walked through the doors together and headed for the lobby level restaurant and bar the giant hotel had. A smile spread across his lips as his gaze landed on the bartender. "That's him."

"Oh my gosh! He's so much more handsome than Virgil described him! Not as handsome as you, but wow!" he gushed, pulling him toward the bar by the hand. "HI ROMAN!"

He looked up in shock at the loud voice saying his name. As his eyes fell on Patton and then Logan beside him, a smile spread across his lips and his gaze lit up. He stood up and stuck his hand out toward the merman. "You must be Patton."
