Chapter Twenty-Four

Virgil looked incredibly nervous as they swam closer to the shore. His friend had already broken the surface and was waving at the two humans that awaited his return. He bit his lip and slowed to a stop.

"Pathos- Patton, I mean, I don't know if I can do this," he said softly. "What if he's forgotten about me? Or remembers me differently and he's disappointed?"

The other merman same up to him and took his hand. "Hey, I can promise you he won't be disappointed. He's a very sweet guy and he really wants to see you again," Patton said. He smiled reassuringly. "He wears that amethyst you gave him every day! He has it on right now! Come on... you can do this."

He looked down and nodded, allowing his friend to pull him toward the shore. As the water became too shallow to swim in, they turned their tails to legs. Virgil was in ripped black pants and Patton was in white pants with some pink and blue designs. They walked out of the water with grace, making the heads of their human soulmates turn.

Logan's heart began to race. Sure, he was aware of Patton's beauty by now, but the way the two mermen were walking from the waves looked ethereal. The wind was blowing at his hair and the water on his skin made him swear he was sparkling. He looked toward Roman to see if he was seeing something similar, but the bartender was already running toward the merman beside his soulmate.

The new merman, Virgil, flinched upon his sudden approach, but seemed to relax when he reached out and took his hands. "It's you, it's really you!" Roman gasped, smiling so wide he looked as though he might cry. "I thought I might've been dreaming, but you're here, you're real."

"I..." he tried to reply, blushing and looking down at their hands.

"You just as beautiful as I remember," the bartender gushed. He reached up and brushed his cheek with his thumb. Virgil's cheeks were bright pink now with a blush as he looked up into Roman's eyes. "And your eyes, oh my goodness, they're purple! I remember that!"

Patton giggled as he made his way back over to his soulmate and laced their fingers together. "Aren't they just the cutest thing?" he asked in a whisper as he watched the two of them interact.

"No, they're not," Logan said simply. The merman looked at him in confusion so he smiled at him and squeezed his hand. "They're not the cutest thing, because you're the cutest thing, obviously."

He blushed and began giggling again at the compliment. He buried his face into his soulmate's shoulder, smiling as he breathed in his scent. Because merfolk had heightened senses, he could place the subtle smell of Logan's deodorant and cologne and his natural smell to be the scent of his soulmate and he loved it.

"Also, I didn't know you could give yourself clothes when you transformed your tail into legs," the intellectual young man said, looking down at the merman curiously. "Did you purposely not give yourself clothes when you were in my pool?"

Patton flushed with embarrassment and shook his head. "N-No, I just kinda... forgot?"

Logan rolled his eyes and chuckled, refocusing on the other two. The dark haired merman was shyly saying something as Roman held the side of his face. They seemed to be having a conversation and if he had to guess, it probably involved why Virgil had never come back to see him.

"I thought you wouldn't want to see me again," he was saying. "I'm not exactly what you would picture a perfect mermaid to be."

"I don't care, you're perfect to me," Roman replied. He then pulled him close and pressed a soft kiss to his lips. Virgil's eyes went wide for a moment before dropping close as he melted into it. Patton and Logan smiled at each other at the success of their plan. When they pulled away, the bartender smiled brightly and pressed their foreheads together. "Are we soulmates?"

The merman chuckled a little. "What do you think?"
