Chapter Ten
Logan felt strange the next day, like he was being pulled toward something even though he obviously wasn't. He assumed he wasn't, unaware of Fate's guiding hand as he made his way down to the beach and toward the cavern he'd found a few days ago.
I wonder why I feel so connected to this place, he thought as he entered the cave. Perhaps it's just the beauty of it that keeps me entranced. It is magical in a way.
With a smile on his face, he sat down near the water's edge, leaning against the wall of the cavern and letting himself relax. He made the mistake of falling asleep, and the tide was coming in.
He was awakened to the water rising to his neck. It was to the point of needing to swim to move effectively. Logan coughed violently as he accidentally inhaled some of the burning saltwater, feeling it scrap the back of his throat like sandpaper. It was pushing him against the roof of the cavern at this point, and he was certain he was going to drown. He took a deep breath and dove underwater in a desperate last attempt to find the way out. He eventually ran out of breath, having failed to make it to the open water and the surface. The last thing he remembered was his vision fading to black as he passed out.
Logan did not drown; in fact, he woke up, coughing up water as he rolled onto his side. He blinked his stinging eyes open as he sputtered and gasped for breath, realizing he was still alive when he'd thought for sure he was going to die.
"'Aleiʻoe?"
He jumped, looking toward the voice. He was laying on the beach, and next to him there was seemingly a man propping himself up on his hands. He had wide eyes, bright blue and breathtaking. It wasn't until Logan looked past just his torso that he saw the shimmering blue fish tail in place of where the young man's legs should've been. He was a merman.
The young merman tilted his head curiously at him with wide shimmering blue eyes. "O wai 'oe?"
"I uh... I don't understand," Logan said, reaching up to rub the back of his head. It was throbbing as though he'd hit it on something. He blinked, looking surprised by the words coming from his mouth, reminding him of what Roman had said about the merman he'd met. "Oh, you can't understand me either can you?"
The merman bit down on his lip, looking comprehensive. "Name?" he tried, pointing to him. He looked confused, squinting, and the man tried to recall the little bit of Hawaiian he'd picked up on from locals. "ʻO wai?"
"Oh! Inoa!" he said, as if realizing what he was asking. "ʻO koʻu inoa he Pathos!"
"Pathos? Is that your name?" Logan asked again. "Your 'inoa' is Pathos?"
He nodded, looking overjoyed that he seemed to understand a least a little of what he was saying. "Pathos... that's not really a name... it sounds like Patton," he said, looking toward the merman. "How about I call you Patton?"
"Hmm?" he cooed in confusion, tilting his head again.
"Um, ʻO Patton kou inoa," Logan said, hoping that it was Hawaiian that the merman understood. "Understand? Your name, 'inoa' is Patton."
He looked a little confused, but opened his mouth to speak. "Pat-ton," the merman tried, giggling happily as the name came out of his mouth. He began to repeat it, and then began to ramble in his native language. "Pat-ton! ʻO koʻu inoaʻo Pat-ton! ʻOʻoe kuʻu pilikino! O wai kou inoa? Makemake au e honi iāʻoe i kēia manawa!"
"Whoa, whoa, slow down," the human said, quieting him with a gentle hand on his shoulder. "Your 'inoa', name, can you say name?"
Patton nodded determinedly. "Naymma!" he said, frowning at his accent on the word. He tried again, sounding out the actual word, dragging out the syllables to try and say it properly. "Naaaaymmm... naym, name! Name!"
"Good, good, can you say, 'My name is Patton'?" Logan asked, smiling encouragingly.
The merman frowned in concentration as he attempted the foreign sentence. "My name... my name is Pat-ton," he said quietly. "My. Name. Is. Pat-ton! My name is Patton!"
