Chapter Sixteen
Logan pulled back from the kiss, searching the merman's eyes as they fluttered open. He noticed how, for just a moment, they seemed out of focus. He blinked several times before he smiled like he hadn't been able to see him properly before.
"Patton, may I ask about your eyesight?" he inquired.
The merman raised his eyebrows in surprise at the question. "Um, yeah? I can see underwater and in the dark because of adaptations-"
"No, no, you can inform me of all that later," Logan cut him off. "I mean just now, you had trouble seeing me when you opened your eyes, didn't you? Your pupils lost focus and you had to blink before you had a clear picture of me."
Patton flushed with embarrassment and began to fidget with his hands. "I m-mean... so what if I'm known for not having very good eyesight out of water? It's not like it matters cause I'm always swimming anyway," he rushed out. He seemed to be panicked over this minuscule flaw he had, rambling and defending himself when the man hadn't accused him of anything. "No one really knows why I've got eye trouble, I've just always had it, but like I said, it doesn't matter cause I've got perfect eyesight underwater. All merfolk do..."
His voice trailed off as he looked down at his hands sadly. "You think I'm not perfect anymore, don't you?"
"Whoa, whoa, Patton, I never said that," he said, grasping his hands in his own. He then raised one to cup his cheek and guide him to look up. "I don't care about any flaws you might have. Your flaws are what make you perfect."
"Really?" the merman asked, a shaky smile spreading across his lips.
Logan nodded and rubbed his cheek with his thumb. "I was just curious about your eyesight, I might have the trick for you," he said. He reached up to remove his glasses from his face and turned them toward him. "Try these."
He picked them up cautiously, curiously, eyeing the unusual object like it was some sort of alien life form. "What is this?" he asked before putting them on.
"They're called glasses, Patton," he explained. A smile spread across his lips as he slipped them onto the bridge of his nose and blinked rapidly. "Humans have developed a way of compensating for problems with our eyes. Some use them to see things far away, others use them to see things up close, and some of them are for all around use. I have no idea what your prescription would be, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to try mine-"
"I CAN SEE CLEARLY! THIS IS AMAZING!!" the merman exclaimed with a joyful clap of his hands. "I can't believe humans are so smart!! They're much more advanced than we thought! You fixed my eyes!"
Logan smiled a little at his enthusiasm, but hurried to correct him. "Hold on now, Pat," he said, touching his shoulder. "They only work while you're wearing them. When you take them off, things will go back to how you usually see them. If you wanted your eyes permanently fixed, you'd have to risk laser eye surgery and something tells me it would be very difficult to explain to the doctor why you have a fish tail."
"Oh! Easy, I just turn on my legs," he said, pulling himself completely out of the water before the human could stop him. There was a flash and then suddenly Patton had two human legs. "See?"
He just blinked, feeling so many questions forming in his head as he looked the merman- human up and down. "How are you able to do that?" he asked before stopping himself. "I assume that is some sort of merfolk magic, but why wouldn't you just do that whenever you want to go ashore?"
"Oh, we're not supposed to go near the shore and the humans, and this magic is extremely tiring to pull off for long amounts of time without access to water," Patton explained.
"That's so interesting," Logan said in awe, looking up to smile at him. "I can't wait to learn more."
