Chapter 27 - The visit with Petunia and Vermin

—James POV—

"Next Wednesday, we're going to see Petunia and her husband for dinner."

"What?" I said. Lily frowned at me. "Why?"

"Because my Mum insists that we have dinner, now that she's got a husband, and I've got a serious boyfriend."

"But why does she insist it? I don't plan on wanting to meet Vernon again. He acted like I wasn't even there when I went with you to their wedding."

"I don't like him either, but me and Petunia have to play nice in front of Mum. If she see's us not being totally kind and sisterly to each other, she'll burst into tears."

"Why?"

"Because . . . I didn't want to tell you, because I knew you'd make a big deal out of it, I knew you'd want to be more protective than usual, and I'm not saying I don't love it, I just —"

"Lily, spit it out. I need to know."

"Well — well my Dad's gotten rather sick, and — and they don't think he'll live to the end of the year, and Mum just wants me and Petunia to love each other for my Dad." Lily mumbled, staring at the ground. I folded Lily into my arms, and held her tight. We stayed like that for a minute, until Lily pulled away, her face red, and eyes slightly puffy.

"Where are we meeting them?" I asked, and she smiled.

"Some place in London. I know it's definitely a fancy place, so we'll have to dress up."

~Lily POV~

We appeared in a dark alley way that we usually apparated to when we went into London. We walked towards the sidewalk in the city, and drifted into the crowds of Muggles.

Snow fell down lightly into the streets, and I realized that it must be close to Winter by now. I hadn't been acknowledging that winter was coming.

"Did you know winter was here?" James asked me.

"No, I've been a bit too preoccupied with all the Order things we have to do. I can't believe it, Christmas must be coming soon." I replied.

"I think it's, like November 29th, so yeah, almost December."

"What a great way to start to holidays, meeting with Petunia and Vermin." I said darkly.

"I thought his name was Vernon." James said.

"It is, but I call him Vermin as a nick name."

"Nice nickname," James laughed.

"Yes, I called him that once on accident when they were still dating, and it kinda stuck."

"Wait, you called him Vermin on accident?"

"Yes! It's one of the million reasons why they hate me, but then again, it's one of my funniest memories, even if I was told off by my Mum." We talked all the way down the road, to where the fancy little shop was. We walked in, looking around, and a strict looking woman walked up to us, her lips pressed firmly together.

"Do you have a reservation?" The woman asked, looking us up and down.

"Yes, well, we're with the Dursleys." I said. The woman nodded, and motioned for us to follow as she strode off through the restaurant. She stopped in front of a very small table, where Petunia and Vernon sat.

Vernon was a portly man, with little to no neck, small, beady eyes, and a scowl.

"Hello," I said.

"Ah, Lily, darling, it's — it's been too long." Petunia said in an unusually high pitched voice. Her eyes darted around the restaurant, as if thinking that someone might see her with such people. Petunia sat back down, and motioned to the two seats. Me and James sat down.

"Well, how have you been?" Petunia asked, her eyes still skimming the room.

"I've been doing well. Um — Me and James moved in together a few months ago."

"Ah, how lovely."

"And what about you? What's up with you?"

"Oh, well, me and Vernon bought our house a year ago, but, of course you know that. And Vernon's sister, Marge, lovely woman, is visiting us next week,"

"Oh, very nice." Silence. The table went into an awkward silence, where we all stared down at the table.

"How's Dad?" I asked, glancing back up.

"He's well, he's been at the hospital for a couple months, though, the doctors are saying he's getting better."

"Really?" I smiled.

"Yes, at least a few more years,"

"Oh, that wonderful!" More silence. I was relieved that Dad might pull through with a couple more years.

"So, Vernon, where do you work?" James asked Vernon. Vernon glanced up at James, and looking around like Petunia had, answered.

"A company called 'Grunnings'," Vernon grunted.

"They make drills, and Vernon has just got a promotion!" Petunia raved.

"And where do you two work?" Vernon asked Me and James. I glanced at James. He shrugged.

"Well, we're not officially employed, because we work for a group that helps stop You-Know-Who," I said.

"Who is this, 'You-Know-Who'?" Vernon asked suspiciously.

"He's a dark wizard," James whispered. Vernon's eyes narrowed, and Petunia's lips pressed together.

"Well, can't someone apart of you lot throw this man in jail?" Vernon asked.

"Well, that's one of the problems, no one knows where he is. That's why we're apart of this group, to try to find and and take him out." I explained.

"So you're both unemployed?" Vernon asked angrily.

"Yes." Me and James said together.

"Well, makes sense." Vernon muttered.

"Excuse me?" I said.

"It's makes sense for people like you to be unemployed."

"How dare you!"

"Lily, please —" James started, but I held up a finger, and James went silent.

"Just because we're in a different world than you, doesn't mean that we don't work hard to things we need!"

"Petunia's always told me how freaky your lot is!"

"That's enough, both of you, Lily and Vermin —!" James stopped talking, and everyone stared at him is disbelief.

"Did you just call me Vermin?" Vernon growled.

"I'm sorry, I didn't —"

"Come, Vernon, we're leaving! I can't believe that Mother would ever think that this would work!" Petunia screeched, and pulled Vernon out  of his chair, towards the door, and out the door hanging open.

"Lily, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to, it just slipped — Wait, are you laughing?"

"Yes!" I laughed, falling back in my chair. James started to laugh, slowly, then laughing as hard as me. We laughed until tears streamed down our faces, and we left, stroll laughing at the look on Petunia's face.
